Donal Finn and Hero Fiennes Tiffin star in “Young Sherlock”
By Dana Simpson TV Media
From Mel Brooks’ 1974 cult classic
“Young Frankenstein” to CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” spinoff “Young Sheldon,” audiences have time and time again proven their love for character origin stories. When a captivating character is created, fans often scramble to learn anything they can about their new media companion, be it in book, movie or television format.
One particular character, famed detective Sherlock Holmes, has stood the test of time better than most. Although the clever Englishman was brought to life 139 years ago by Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, fans of the fictional investigator are still clawing at page and screen for more. Luckily for them, the adaptations just keep coming.
“Young Sherlock,” a new Sherlock Holmes prequel series from grungy British filmmaker Guy Ritchie (“Snatch,” 2000), premieres Wednesday, March 4, on Prime Video.
Split into eight episodes, all of which are to be released at once, “Young Sherlock” stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin (“The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” 2024) as the titular budding brainiac. Nephew to actors Ralph Fiennes (“28 Years Later,” 2025) and Joseph Fiennes (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Fiennes Tiffin’s breakout role came in 2009 when he was cast as the 11-year-old version of Tom Riddle in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” the sixth film in the eight-film series. Now, he stars as another young icon — albeit one much more benevolent despite his earmark troublemaking and audacity.
“Sherlock Holmes is a disgraced young man — raw and unfiltered — when he finds himself wrapped up in a murder case that threatens his liberty,” reads the official series description, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. “His first ever case unravels a globetrotting conspiracy that changes his life forever. Unfolding in 1870s Oxford and adventuring abroad, the series will expose the early antics of the anarchic adolescent who is yet to evolve into Baker Street’s most renowned resident.”
Although this will be Fiennes Tiffin’s first time portraying Holmes, series director Ritchie is hardly new to the detective’s world. Having previously helmed the 2009 movie “Sherlock Holmes” and its 2011 sequel, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” both of which starred recovering bad boys Robert Downey Jr. (“Iron Man,” 2008) and Jude Law (“The Talented Mr. Ripley,” 1999), the series’ trailer illustrates that Ritchie plans to bring the same signature grit to “Young Sherlock” as the leading man works to solve an on-campus
Before Baker St.
New series follows a ‘Young Sherlock’
murder whilst trying to pass classes despite his penchant for questioning authority.
“He’s so decisive and so good at what he does,” Fiennes Tiffin said of Ritchie, with whom he also previously worked on “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” in an interview with Collider. “It’s easy to trust him. From Day 1, he’d be saying, ‘Do it like this,’ or ‘do it like that.’ He could be quite direct with his direction, which I really like.”
The series is created by Matthew Parkhill (“Rogue”) and follows several key points from author Andrew Lane’s “Young Sherlock Holmes” young adult books, although Fiennes Tiffin told Collider that some liberties were taken with respect to that source material as well.
“What we’re doing is recreating this character, but before we initially meet him, so it’s about getting the measurements right on how much of Sherlock to put in there and how many glimpses to put in of who Sherlock is going to become, because you want to see him,”
said Fiennes Tiffin. “In any origin story, you want to see how they got to where they are.”
In the official trailer, for instance, would-be viewers are introduced to the series’ leading man within the first four seconds, with Holmes cheekily commenting that he’s “always been more of a thinker than a fighter” as several clips of sucker punches and headbutts follow as punctuation. While the elder iteration of Holmes isn’t necessarily known to be a brute, his arrogance and emotional detachment could signal a latent dangerous edge, one which may have been curbed during his youth or young adult years.
By the looks of it, Holmes’ university friend — and future nemesis — James Moriarty (Donal Finn, “The Wheel of Time”) also plays a big part in his personal development. From uncovering secret passageways and detecting bombs together to commandeering carriages and attending lavish parties at each other’s side, Holmes and Moriarty appear inseparable at Oxford. Whether their relationship-defining
rift happens at school or significantly later in life, audiences do not yet know, but either way, their friendship is ripe for drama and action.
“Young Sherlock” co-stars Colin Firth (“The King’s Speech,” 2010) as Sir Bucephalus Hodge; Max Irons (“Condor”) as Mycroft Holmes; Natascha McElhone (“Californication”) as Cordelia Holmes; Ravi Aujla (“Slow Horses”) as Kishore Malik; and new talent Zine Tseng as Princess Gulun Shou’an. Joseph Fiennes and Holly Cattle (“Cobra”) also star. Don’t miss your chance to travel back in time to witness the birth of a brilliant mind when “Young Sherlock” drops all eight episodes Wednesday, March 4, on Prime Video.

Montana’s ‘Marshals’ gain a new recruit
By Sarah Passingham TV Media
Yeehaw! The Duttonverse has expanded its boundaries yet again with another spinoff of Paramount+’s wildly successful cable western “Yellowstone,” but this time with a broadcast debut. “Marshals” premieres Sunday, March 1, on CBS. The new neowestern follows Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes, “Eddington,” 2025) as he accepts an offer to join a group of U.S. Marshals keeping watch over growing violent crime in Montana.
If you haven’t caught up on the fifth and final season of “Yellowstone,” fair warning that there are spoilers ahead. Now living — but not thriving — on the piece of land that was once Yellowstone Ranch and mourning the loss of a life that was once promised to him, Kayce is waiting for purpose to find him.
That purpose arrives in the form of a job offer from U.S. Marshal Pete Calvin (Logan MarshallGreen, “And Just Like That...”), who tells Kayce in the official trailer that his stop by the ranch isn’t just a wellness check, but “a no man left behind kind of thing.”
The two have a shared history in the military, so the former Navy SEAL members join up again, dust off their tactical skills and put them to use. The Marshals and their new recruit “must balance the high psychological cost of serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence with their duty to their families,” explains CBS.
Reprising their roles from “Yellowstone” to help complete Kayce’s family are Brecken Merrill (“This Is Us”) as his son, Tate, Gil Birmingham (“Under the Banner of Heaven”) as Chief Thomas Rainwater and Mo Brings Plenty (“The Good Lord Bird”) as Mo.
The other members of the Marshals team, Kayce’s new family, include Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel, “Rescue: HI-Surf”), Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos, “Pulse”) and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” 2023). Brett Cullen (“Ransom Canyon”) stars in a recurring role as Harry Gifford, head of the U.S. Marshals in Montana.
In the series trailer, Harry confronts Kayce about his motivations for joining the Marshal unit, getting back as an answer: “Yellowstone’s gone. Same for most of my family. And as for vengeance, the day’s still young.”
There might not be time to psychoanalyze everyone’s reasons for joining the unit, as they get down to business quickly in the trailer. A violent criminal network has arrived in Montana and the situation couldn’t sound more daunting. Where is the unit headed to confront the danger? “Just over the Wyoming border, place called the Zone of Death,” Belle explains. “This job always takes us to the best places,” she adds with a bit of gal-
Luke Grimes and Logan Marshall-Green in “Marshals”
lows humor.
Still a cowboy at heart, Kayce helps the unit patrol the plains on horseback and uses his roping skills to impress his new team members. Unmistakable in a Stetson and tactical vest, the new role seems to suit Kayce well.
“Marshals” is a first for the “Yellowstone” universe, not only for premiering on network TV (“Yellowstone” brought in big ratings for Paramount Network and its two prequel series — “1883” and “1923” — are both Paramount+ shows), but also being the first foray in the franchise to not have Taylor Sheridan (“Sicario,” 2015) at the helm as series creator.
Spencer Hudnut, who was showrunner and executive producer for the long-running CBS/Paramount+ military drama “SEAL Team,” created “Marshals,” his first credit as creator after “SEAL Team” wrapped up in 2024. He also serves as the writer of the series premiere, titled “Piya Wiconi,” which was directed by Greg Yaitanes (“Presumed Innocent”).
Perhaps as a reward to loyal viewers for being such dedicated fans of the originating series, CBS has been generous with a look into the inciting action of the premiere episode.
According to the network’s episode description, Kayce joins a Marshal unit that is “hunting down a bomber targeting Broken Rock Reservation.” The team steps into action when “the trail leads to a dangerous encounter with an armed anti-government militia.”
Whether Kayce wanted to join the fight, the fight for peace and order in Montana was coming to him either way. After having sold the land that made up Yellowstone Ranch back to Thomas and the Broken Rock Reservation for a symbolic amount of cash at the conclusion of “Yellowstone,” Kayce was given a portion of the land to live on and operate as a ranch.
The new series was first announced with the originating series tie-in name of “Y: Marshals,” referring to the brand bore by all who were willing to make the lifelong commitment to Yellowstone Ranch before simplifying the show title.
Don’t miss the premiere of the brand-new drama “Marshals,” Sunday, March 1, on CBS.

“The biggest prize in culinary television history” (per Paramount+) will be awarded during Season 1 of the all-new “America’s Culinary Cup,” premiering Wednesday, March 4, on CBS with a supersized 90-minute episode and streaming the next day on Paramount+.
Hosted and produced by former “Top Chef” host Padma Lakshmi, this all-star competition offers a $1 million prize to its winner, testing 16 of the nation’s most talented chefs on the series’ designated “10 culinary commandments”: meat, vegetables, sauces, dessert, innovation, flavors, sustainability, world cuisine, consistency, culinary science and technology. The chef’s creations will be
judged by Michelin-starred chefs Michael Cimarusti and Wylie Dufresne, who evaluate taste, creativity, presentation and technique to determine who advances in the competition and who will be eliminated from the game.
In this first season of competition, the contestants in question include six Michelinstarred chefs — an honor held by fewer than one percent of restaurants worldwide. The season also features two Bocuse d’Or medalists, two James Beard Award winners, 14 James Beard Award nominees and recipients of numerous other top-tier culinary honors, according to Paramount, with each chef “bringing their unique flair and signature dishes to the table.”
Speaking to press at CBS’s presentation at the Television Critics Association Winter Tour,
Lakshmi explained why she was drawn back into the world of culinary competitions after leaving “Top Chef” in 2023.
“I’ve obviously had almost two decades of experience in the genre, and I thought the genre was ready for a shakeup, for a refresh and for something new and different. And I wanted to be the one who did it,” she said.
Michael Cimarusti, Padma Lakshmi and Wylie Dufresne feature in “America’s Culinary Cup”

WHAT’S NEW ON MGM+
“American Classic” - Season 1
One actor’s fall from Broadway fame sparks a complicated homecoming in Season 1 of “American Classic,” premiering Sunday, March 1, on MGM+.
Kevin Kline (“Wild Wild West,” 1999) stars as Richard Bean, a self-absorbed stage performer whose very public meltdown sends him retreating to the hometown theater where his dreams first began. Hoping to restore both his reputation and his family’s struggling theater, he directs a play and casts himself as the lead. But his return stirs old tensions with his brother (Jon Tenney, “Scandal”) and ex-girlfriend (Laura Linney, “Love Actually,” 2003) — who is now married to his brother and serving as the town’s mayor. “As old loves resurface and buried secrets emerge, Richard must confront the consequences of his past actions and the family and town he left behind for fame and glamour” (per MGM+). Through rehearsals, setbacks and moments of hardwon clarity, Richard begins to rediscover what truly matters to him in life. From series creators Bob Martin (“Michael: Every Day”) and Michael Hoffman (“The Last Station,” 2009) — who directs episodes alongside Tricia Brock (“The Witcher”) — the series also stars Len Cariou (“Blue Bloods”), Nell Verlaque (“Overcompensating”) and Michael Townsend Wright (“The Rat Pack,” 1998).
WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX
“Vladimir”
Based on the novel by Julia May Jonas, passion ignites where reason falters in “Vladimir,” premiering Thursday, March 5, on Netflix. When a passionate but reckless professor’s (Rachel Weisz, “The Mummy,” 1999) world begins to unravel, she becomes intensely fixated on her magnetic, young new col-
league (Leo Woodall, “The White Lotus”). As tension builds and secrets simmer, her growing obsession pulls her further from the life she knows. Caught between desire, ambition and impulse, she starts to risk everything to bring her most scandalous fantasies to life. With episodes directed by “Killing Eve’s” Francesca Gregorini, “Vladimir” also stars Kayli Carter (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Elisa Moolecherry (“Molly’s Game,” 2017), John Slattery (“Ant-Man,” 2015), Jessica Henwick (“Love and Monsters,” 2020) and Matt Walsh (“Ted,” 2012). Additionally “The Firm’s” Chris Pavoni produces the series.

“DTF St. Louis”
A twisted love affair, a dating app and one shocking death set the stage for “DTF St. Louis.” Premiering Sunday, March 1, on HBO Max, this limited series follows the love triangle among three adults grappling with middle-age malaise — a situation that quickly escalates when Floyd (David Harbour, “Stranger Things”) is found dead, raising questions about whether love escalated to murder. After his death, Clark (Jason Bateman, “Arrested Develop-
ment”) continues his affair with Floyd’s wife, Carol (Linda Cardellini, “ER”), while investigators — “Monster’s” Richard Jenkins and Joy Sunday, from Netflix’s hit series “Wednesday” — begin piecing together the events leading up to the tragedy. Also starring Wynn Everett (“The Newsroom”), Asher Miles Fallica (“Ozark”) and Chastity Dotson (“Veronica Mars”), “DTF St. Louis” is written and directed by showrunner Steve Conrad (“Patriot”), with Todd Black (“Seven Pounds,” 2008) executive producing the series.

navigates his senior year alongside best friend John Bennett (Max Burkholder, “Daddy Day Care,” 2003). With John’s parents, Matty (Scott Grimes, “American Dad!”) and Susan (Alanna Ubach, “Euphoria”), and cousin Blaire (Giorgia Whigham, “Sierra Burgess Is a Loser,” 2018) around, mischief and family clashes are never far away. Season 2 follows John as he worries he might graduate from high school without having his first girlfriend, while Ted’s attempts at playing matchmaker only make things worse. MacFarlane serves as writer, director and co-showrunner alongside Paul Corrigan (“Modern Family”) and Brad Walsh (“King of the Hill”).

Q: Who does the voice of Ernesto de la Cruz in “Coco”? My husband is convinced it’s John Leguizamo, but I don’t think it’s him.
A: You’re right, but your husband can be forgiven for the mistake — the Disney-Pixar animated film “Coco” (2017) is packed with bigname Latino stars, so it’s actually surprising John Leguizamo (“Romeo + Juliet,” 1996) didn’t appear in one of the roles.
Rather, the film’s fictional musical idol Ernesto de la Cruz was voiced by top film and TV star Benjamin Bratt (“Law & Order”).
“Coco,” about a young aspiring musician who enters the Land of the Dead to find out why his family refuses to let him be a singer, is a film steeped in Mexican culture.
Bratt said that cultural link is a big part of what drew him to the project — along with being a longtime Pixar head.
“What it will do, with all the power they have in their storytelling, is reintroducing in a way this beautiful culture to a global community,” he told ScreenRant ahead of the film’s release. “And it will not only underscore that beauty but also share the connective tissue, really, that, at the end of the day, we’re all human beings. We all kind of traffic in the same wishes and desires.”
Bratt starred in the film along with fellow screen heavyweights Gael Garcia Bernal (“Mozart in the Jungle”), Gabriel Iglesias (beloved stand-up comedian and star of the 2017 film
“Ferdinand”), Edward James Olmos (“Miami Vice”) and more.
It could be that Leguizamo didn’t take a role because he was too busy with one of the four projects he released in 2017 — including, most notably, the action smash “John Wick: Chapter 2.”
Q: Is Hugh Dillon coming back for more “Mayor of Kingstown”?
A: Yes, but just one more time — and he may or may not be happy about that.
Paramount+ announced in January that the upcoming fifth season will be its last. Given that the fourth just ended, we don’t have a release date for the fifth yet (the previous four have aired all over the calendar, so it would be hard to even guess), but it is coming.
The way this has played out, combined with things co-star Hugh Dillon (“Flashpoint”) has said about the show’s future, has actually
launched a bit of a debate about the definition of “canceled” in the TV context.
Is a show “canceled” if the producers are given time to write a proper ending to the show? What if the writer-producers had a much longer plan in mind?
In case you haven’t guessed, that’s the story here. Dillon, who stars as Ian Ferguson and is also co-creator and showrunner alongside Taylor Sheridan (“Yellowstone”), has said in interviews that the show’s larger story was always plotted out over seven seasons.
Ending at five was definitely not the plan, so the producers would likely consider it a cancelation. But fans at least will get some closure at the end instead of an unresolved cliffhanger, which is definitely how most shows used to end in the broadcast era.
“Mayor of Kingstown” stars Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker,” 2008) as the titular mayor of the fictional town and Dillon as a senior detective in the police department, working in their different ways to keep the conflict-ridden city together.
Q: Is Mark Wahlberg going to do any more of the Parker stories? I loved him in “Play Dirty.”
A: In-demand actor and producer Mark Wahlberg (“The Fighter,” 2010) has 26 different projects in some stage of development, according to IMDb.com, but not one of them is a Parker story.
The career criminal Parker is the most famous creation of prolific crime novelist Donald E. West-
lake and has been played on screen by numerous tough-guy stars, most recently Wahlberg in last year’s Amazon Prime Video film “Play Dirty.”
But Wahlberg has no plans to continue the series, even though there’s plenty — Parker was the central character in 24 novels Westlake wrote (if you’re looking for them, he published them under the pseudonym Richard Stark).
But he has plenty of fan-pleasing stuff on his plate.
Fans of gritty crime thrillers in general will get to see him in “By Any Means,” an upcoming movie about a mafia hitman and a Black FBI agent teaming up to investigate the murders of civil rights leaders in 1966 Mississippi. He also has a couple of sports comedies coming — the raunchy, booze-fueled “Balls Up” and the more heartwarming “Weekend Warriors.”
All three of these are either in post-production or completed, but there’s no word on release dates yet.
In terms of other established intellectual property, he’s reportedly in pre-production on “The Six Billion Dollar Man,” a feature-film adaptation of the classic action TV series “The Six Million Dollar Man” (adjusted for inflation, apparently). But that’s been in pre-production for more than a year now, so it may never see the light of day.
