Emergency at the Opry

Three chords and the truth can’t heal every wound. A new spinoff series follows Music City’s emergencies from dispatch to the scene. “9-1-1: Nashville” premieres Thursday, Oct. 9, on ABC. The procedural sees first responders attend to urgent crises that could only happen in a place like Nashville. Chris O’Donnell (“NCIS: Los Angeles”) stars as fire captain and rodeo rider Don Hart. Music City heats up in ‘9-1-1: Nashville’ premiere

Three chords and the truth can’t heal every wound. A new spinoff series follows Music City’s emergencies from dispatch to the scene, as “9-1-1: Nashville” premieres Thursday, Oct. 9, on ABC. The procedural sees Tennessee first responders attend to urgent crises that could only happen in a place like Nashville.

Per ABC, “9-1-1: Nashville” is “a high-octane procedural about heroic first responders, as well as their family saga of power and glamour set in one of America’s most diverse and dynamic cities.” It seems that the fire house is the center of the glamour and family drama in the upcoming series. Full of multitalented firefighters and a common last name, there is sure to be lively action between some big personalities in their down time.

The upcoming series cast some real Nashville stars, with Grammy-winning country artist LeAnn Rimes (“It’s Christmas, Eve,” 2018) in a main role. Rimes is Dixie Bennings, a mother of one of the series’ firefighters. Kimberly Williams-Paisley (“Nashville”) stars as Cammie Raleigh, the dispatch call center operator. Williams-Paisley calls Nashville home, where she lives with her husband, “Whiskey Lullaby” singer Brad Paisley and their sons.

Guest starring in the series premiere is CMT Music Award winner Kane Brown (“Fire Country”). Brown held down co-hosting duties for four successive CMT Music Awards ceremonies from 2020 to 2023 and made a splash in his first dramatic TV performance when he appeared in an episode of the CBS series “Fire Country” in 2023. ABC revealed that Brown “proves heroic in a major storyline” in the premiere, with a scene set at a concert.

Filling out the main cast are Chris O’Donnell (“NCIS: Los Angeles”) as fire captain and rodeo rider Don Hart; Jessica Capshaw (“Grey’s Anatomy”) as Blythe Hart, Don’s wife; Hailey Kilgore (“Power Book III: Raising Kanan”) as firefighter and singer Taylor Thompson; Michael Provost (“The Holdovers,” 2023) as firefighter and cowboy Ryan Hart; Juani Feliz (“Harlem”) as firefighter and former surgeon Roxie Alba; and newcomer Hunter McVey as bad-boy firefighter Blue Bennings, Dixie’s son. Recurring cast members include Gregory Alan Williams (“The Righteous Gemstones”) as Harold Foster, MacKenzie Porter (“The Runarounds”) as Samantha Hart and Tim Matheson (“Virgin River”) as Edward.

As far as what fans can anticipate from the new series, showrunner Rashad Raisani (“Burn Notice”) told The Wrap in an interview, “We’re going to do what Nashville is known

for, among many things, country music and honky-tonks and tornadoes. We’ll probably have all three in our first few episodes.”

Every first responder in “9-1-1: Nashville” seems to have their own passion outside of saving lives that embraces a facet of Tennessee tradition. Where fellow franchise spinoff “9-1-1: Lone Star” followed a fish out of water fire captain who’d made the move from New York City to Austin, Texas, this new series is packed with characters that live like pictureperfect Nashville natives or transplants there to keep the dream alive.

Don may have passed down his affinity for the rodeo along with the family business of fighting fires to his son, Ryan, who sports the title of modern-day cowboy. On the more glamorous end of what Nashville is known for is Taylor, who moonlights as a singer. Details about Dixie are being kept under wraps for now, but viewers will certainly be anticipating a character played by a real-life country diva to take to the stage at some point. One thing

is confirmed, and that is that Dixie’s son Blue’s wild tendencies led him to a career as a stripper before he moved into the firehouse.

The frequent collaborators behind longrunning hits such as anthology series “American Horror Story,” Ryan Murphy and Tim Minear teamed up with “9-1-1: Lone Star” writer and producer Raisani to co-create the new spinoff series. Brad Falchuk (“American Crime Story”) executive produces the series alongside the creators, “9-1-1” star Angela Bassett, O’Donnell and Bradleu Buecker (“Scream Queens”).

The third installment in the “9-1-1” franchise, “9-1-1: Nashville” has arrived just as “9-1-1: Lone Star” completed its five-season run on Fox. Set in the same universe, “Doctor Odyssey” was canceled this summer at ABC after just one season, despite a passionate fan base. It has been an eventful year for the franchise with some unexpected shake-ups that really got viewers talking. “9-1-1” fans will know that a major character death last season

shocked viewers who thought if anyone was safe, it was fire captain Bobby Nash (Peter Krause, “Parenthood”) who was exposed and succumbed to a lethal virus.

With “9-1-1: Nashville” premiering immediately after the originating series’ ninth-season return, it begs the question of crossover possibilities. Entertainment Weekly posed that question to Minear during an interview about the landscape of the franchise, with the creator giving a cheeky non-answer of, “I think the network would love that.”

Remain calm and tune in to the disasterfilled series premiere of “9-1-1: Nashville,” airing Thursday, Oct. 9, on ABC.

Remaking ‘Maigret’ Simenon’s top detective returns on Masterpiece

There is nothing meager about Maigret. First introduced to the public by author Georges Simenon in his 1931 novel “Pietr the Latvian,” French police detective Jules Maigret — thanks to his Belgian creator — paved the way for a new literary genre: detective fiction. Now, after 75 novels, 28 short stories and more than 30 actors having portrayed the detailoriented, street-wise policeman on screen, Maigret is finding a new home on PBS.

“Maigret,” the six-episode first season, premieres Sunday, Oct. 5, on Masterpiece. Check your local PBS listings for details.

The series, reimagined for modern audiences, stars Benjamin Wainwright (“Belgravia: The Next Chapter”) as the titular Parisian chief inspector, who, per the official PBS description, “heads the elite police unit known as La Crim, responsible for investigating all serious crime in and around Paris.

“Maigret is an unconventional young detective with something to prove, relentless in his investigations,” the description continues, “with an uncanny ability to get under the skin of the criminals he is chasing and a matchless knowledge of Paris and its inhabitants.”

Largely filmed in Budapest, Hungary, in order to evoke the look and feel of Paris without the luxury price tag, this newest iteration of the beloved character’s story is the first adaptation to be set against a contemporary backdrop, thus bringing cases and character quirks to the forefront in a more relatable way for modern audiences. And with just three main cases spanning all six episodes of the series’ first season, modern audiences may also appreciate this departure from the neatly arranged one-case-per-episode model that has become standard issue for the traditional onehour procedural.

“‘Maigret’ will be a perfect addition to Masterpiece’s lineup of Mystery! shows,” Susanne Simpson, executive producer and head of scripted content for Masterpiece, said in a PBS press release. “Our partners at Playground have assembled an incredible cast and creative team, and our audience is going to love Insp. Maigret and his unique style of crime solving.”

In preparation for the new series, which is produced for Masterpiece by Playground and distributed by way of Banijay Rights, PBS announced last September that Maigret would return rather differently than the way the many longtime readers may remember him. Although the character’s humanity and investigative penchant remain intact, the television network recognizes that this new take on the age-old crime solver is likely to be more inclu-

sive for a new generation of content consumers.

Likewise, audiences are sure to get an updated view of France’s capital city — from the Ritz to the riff-raff — rather than the oft-idealized, romantic take on the city that is so often portrayed on both screen and page.

“‘Maigret’ inhabits a vividly realized Paris not often seen on camera,” reads PBS’s September 2024 adaptation announcement, “[one] that takes us from the glitzy upper-class world of luxury hotels and mansions to local bourgeois bistros and bars and the underground haunts of the professionally criminal.”

But, as many fans of Simenon’s work or adaptations will already be aware, Paris is frequently positioned as a central character within Simenon’s works. In fact, this focus on a location and the social fabric therein is key to Simenon’s oeuvre, meaning that — even with the updated take on its main character — “Maigret” manages to channel the spirit of its author 36 years after his death at home in Lausanne, Switzerland.

“Simenon crisply encapsulates that Paris of neighborhood bars and bistros, of payphones and platform buses, sparing us neither the gloom of November nor the heat of August,” France Today reporter Thirza Vallois writes in her 2016 article titled “Georges Simenon’s Paris: Following in the Footsteps of his Fictional Sleuth, Jules Maigret,” continuing, “He even takes us past the loge of the concierge into private homes and gratifies us with the smell of floor polish or the cooking smells of ragout de mouton, blanquette de veau or tripes à la mode de Caen.”

Joining Wainwright in bringing “Maigret’s” characters to life are Stefanie Martini (“The Last Kingdom”) as Mme. Louise Maigret, wife of the leading man, while Blake Harrison (“The Inbetweeners”), Reda Elazouar (“Sex Education”), Shaniqua Okwok (“The Flatshare”), Kerrie Hayes (“Tin Star”) and Rob Kazinsky (“EastEnders”) portray Maigret’s fellow Paris-based detectives, who together make up the chief inspector’s own unofficial task force known as “Les Maigrets.”

After making a lasting impression on shows such as “Beat Bobby Flay,” “Supermarket Stakeout,” “Tournament of Champions” and more, Alex Guarnaschelli knows she’s got what it takes to be a winning chef. But can she beat the best of the best? “Alex vs America” returns Tuesday, Oct. 7, for a fifth season on Food Network, hoping to answer exactly that. This season — tantalizingly themed as “Alex’s Nightmares” — will see Alex joined by host Eric Adjepong (“Wildcard Kitchen”), who raises the stakes by bringing in some of the most celebrated chefs and “winningest champions” as Alex’s opponents, each dead set on taking Alex down once and for all.

As Food Network describes: “In each episode, Alex will go up against three expert chefs in two cooking rounds where anyone can be sent home, including Alex. With ultimate bragging rights and $15,000 on the line, the chefs will battle to see if they have what it takes to beat Alex. With surprising all-star chefs around every turn, minds will be blown, friendships will be tested and challenges will be won and lost.”

The competition starts off strong, as three former “Tournament of Champions” winners — who have gone on to become Food Network stars in their own right — arrive in Alex’s kitchen for an explosive season premiere. Antonia Lofaso (“BBQ Brawl: Flay V. Symon”), Tiffani Faison (“Best Bite in Town”) and Mei Lin (“Guy’s Grocery Games: All-

Star Invitational”) believe they have what it takes to beat Alex at her own game, acting as some of Alex’s most formidable competitors yet. Chefs Cat Cora (“Iron Chef America: The Series”) and Susan Feniger (“Susan Feniger: Forked,” 2023) stand by, waiting to share their expert opinion as judges, sending some on to victory while others are eliminated from the game.

WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX

“The Woman in Cabin 10” (2025)

A luxury cruise turns into a nightmare at sea in “The Woman in Cabin 10,” premiering Friday, Oct. 10, on Netflix. Based on the bestselling novel by Ruth Ware, Keira Knightley (“Pride and Prejudice,” 2005) stars as Lo Blacklock, a travel journalist looking to regain her footing after a recent trauma. When Lo’s assigned to cover the maiden voyage of an exclusive luxury cruise through the fjords of Norway, it seems like the perfect work trip — until late one night when Lo is jolted awake by a scream and the unmistakable sight of a woman being thrown overboard from the cabin next door. But when she raises the alarm, every passenger is accounted for and the crew insists nothing is wrong. As Lo finds herself trapped at sea with a ship full of strangers — some of whom may be hiding dark secrets — she conducts her own frantic search for the truth before she becomes the next to vanish. Starring Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”), Guy Pearce (“Neighbours”) and Kaya Scodelario (“The Maze Runner,” 2014), “The Woman in Cabin 10” is directed by Simon Stone (“The Daughter,” 2015), with Richard Hewitt (“Bohemian Rhapsody,” 2018) serving as the film’s executive producer.

“Boots” - Season 1

A bold new dramedy about finding yourself in the unlikeliest of places, Season 1 of “Boots” premieres Thursday, Oct. 9, on Netflix. “Boots” puts an irreverent spin on the classic coming-of-age story, set in the gritty, unpredictable world of the 1990s U.S. Marine Corps — when being openly gay in the military was still illegal. The series follows Cameron Cope (Miles Heizer, “Love, Simon,” 2018), a closeted young man searching for purpose, and his lifelong friend Ray McAffey (Liam Oh, “The Thing About Harry,” 2020), the son of a decorated Marine determined to prove himself. Thrown together with a diverse group of recruits, they discover their true selves in an environment designed to push them to their limits. The series also stars Vera Farmiga

(“Orphan,” 2009), Nicholas Logan (“Dark Winds”), Max Parker (“Emmerdale”), Brandon Tyler Moore (“English Teacher”) and Kieron Moore (“Vampire Academy”). Written for television by Greg Cope White (“Holiday Rush,” 2019), Andy Parker (“Tales of the City”) acts as the series’ executive producer.

WHAT’S NEW ON PRIME VIDEO

“Maintenance Required” (2025)

Love and rivalry collide in “Maintenance Required,” premiering Wednesday, Oct. 8, on Prime Video. Charlie (played by “Riverdale” star Madelaine Petsch, who also serves as an executive producer), a fiercely independent owner of an all-female mechanic shop, finds herself at a crossroads when she’s forced to rethink the future of her business. Seeking advice, she turns to an anonymous online confidant known only as Beau (Jacob Scipio, “Bad Boys for Life,” 2020), whose insight and empathy become an unexpected lifeline. What Charlie doesn’t realize is that Beau is actually her real-life rival — the head of a competing garage just down the street. With the shop’s survival now in question, Charlie must navigate the delicate and undeniable pull of a budding romance. From writer-director Lacey Uhlemeyer (“The Dancer,” 2025), “Maintenance Required” also stars Madison Bailey (“Outer Banks”), Naomi J. Ogawa (“Wednesday”), Katy O’Brian (“Twisters,” 2024), Jim Gaffigan (“Peter Pan & Wendy,” 2023) and Inanna Sarkis (“After,” 2019).

“Saquon”(2025)

Taking viewers inside Saquon Barkley’s remarkable journey, “Saquon” premieres Thursday, Oct. 9, on Prime Video. When Barkley hoisted the Lombardi Trophy in Philadelphia Eagles green, it marked the perfect culmination of a journey defined by unwavering self-belief. This feature-length documentary gives viewers a firsthand account of Barkley’s journey by utilizing five years of video diaries recorded by Saquon as he navigated his career’s most challenging chapters: methodically battling back from ACL surgery with the same explosive power that defines his playing style, while enduring tense contract negotiations with the team that drafted him, ultimately leading him to a bitter division rival. Directed by Alexander Pappas (“Portland Is the New Portland,” 2024), “Saquon” is executive produced by Jon Weinbach (“The Last Dance”), Jason Reed (“Mulan,” 2020), Martin Scorsese (“Boardwalk Empire”) and Jesse Sisgold (“Kelce,” 2023).

Q: Help me out here. I remember watching a comedic remake of “The Maltese Falcon” from the ‘70s, I think, but I can’t remember what it was called.

A: It wasn’t quite a remake, but you’re probably thinking of 1975’s “The Black Bird.”

It starred George Segal (“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” 1966) as Sam Spade Jr., son of the great detective played to great acclaim by Humphrey Bogart in “The Maltese Falcon” (1941).

The premise is that Sam Jr. inherits his father’s San Francisco detective agency and soon also finds himself in possession of a supposedly fake version of the priceless falcon statue that Sam Sr. once chased. But once a lot of familiarly shady characters start expressing an interest, it starts to seem like maybe he has the real thing after all.

Unfortunately, “The Black Bird” is pretty tough to find these days. It seems to have never gotten a DVD release, and none of the streaming services seem to offer it.

That could have something to do with the fact that critics and audiences both seemed to reject it. It was considered a flop at the time, with New Yorker reviewer Pauline Kael calling it “a dumb comedy, with an insecure tone and some good ideas mixed with some terrible ones.”

Q: What’s Ray Romano been up to? The last thing I saw him in was the “Get Shorty” series.

A: Ray Romano (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) seems to have reached the “oh-that-

sounds-interesting” stage of his career. Having conquered stand-up comedy in the ‘90s and then sitcoms in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s with “Everybody Loves Raymond,” he now seems to just be taking roles for the sake of variety.

If you last saw him on his crime-comedy series “Get Shorty,” a remake of the film of the same name that ran for three seasons on Epix until 2019, the biggest thing you missed is “The Irishman.” Romano played against type as a member of a powerful mafia family in the award-winning, star-studded 2019 Netflix drama.

In 2022, he directed, produced, wrote and appeared (but just in a supporting role) in another

feature film, the lighter and more personal “Somewhere in Queens,” a story of a dad wrapped up in his son’s would-be basketball career. Romano told Screen Rant that, “I wanted to make it about an Italian family from Queens. I wanted to write what I know.”

But he’s also found ways to keep small-screen comedy feeling fresh as well. He’s appeared in a number of prestige sitcoms, such as Peacock’s “Bupkis” in 2023, and the HBO Max series “Made for Love” and “Bookie,” which finished airing its second, and final, season earlier this year.

Most recently, he was back on the big screen, with a role in the star-studded indie comedy “The Best You Can,” which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in July and is looking for distribution. In between all this, of course, has been a healthy amount of hanging-out-with-his-buddies work, such as an appearance on “Celebrity Family Feud,” going up against his old “Everybody Loves Raymond” castmate Brad Garrett. He also did a few episodes of the Netflix food/travel series “Somebody Feed Phil,” created by and starring Phil Rosenthal, who was the brain behind “Everybody Loves Raymond.”

Q: With Noah Hawley now doing that “Alien” show, does that mean “Fargo” is finished?

A: “Fargo” isn’t finished, but it seems to be sitting on the back burner for creator Noah Hawley (“Legion”).

“Fargo,” the series adaptation of the hit 1996 film of the same name, has been airing sporadically on FX since 2014. Years have often passed between its five seasons, the most recent of which finished airing in January 2024.

Earlier this year, Hawley pulled the same trick: he debuted a hit series adaptation of a film (a series of films, actually) with “Alien: Earth,” a continuation/prequel of the Alien film franchise, also on the FX network.

He hasn’t given up on “Fargo” — at least, not according to the network — however, both he and FX are prioritizing the new show at the moment.

“We’re pretty bullish on ‘Alien: Earth,’” FX boss John Landgraf said in an interview with Variety magazine last year. “And we’ve told [Hawley] that assuming, as we hope, ‘Alien: Earth’ is a returning television series, we want him to focus on at least writing two seasons of it before returning to a possible sixth season of ‘Fargo.’” Hawley said about the same thing in an interview with Deadline.com last year, but also said that his attention span is a factor, too. “I think their hope is to keep my focus on ‘Alien’ at the moment. Right now, that’s where my focus is, but if there’s too much downtime, I can get restless.”
