‘Med,’ ‘Fire’ and ‘P.D.’ return to cable this fall
ith approximately 2.6 million Americans calling Chicago home, it makes sense that many a television series would decide to place their focus on the home of the Bears, the Cubs and the White Sox. Some of the most popular television to capture the essence of the Windy City, though, must be Dick Wolf’s (“Law & Order”) iconic One Chicago franchise.
Now several years into each of Wolf’s established series, One Chicago returns to NBC as a whole Wednesday, Oct. 1, as “Chicago Med,” “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.” make their Season 11, Season 14 and Season 13 premieres, respectively.
The franchise, “which spans 36 seasons and 728 episodes ahead of the fall 2025 premieres” (per ScreenRant), first marks its return with the Season 11 premiere of “Chicago Med,” the last series to join the One Chicago franchise (of those still airing). Having first premiered in 2015, the medical drama currently boasts 201 episodes across its 10 seasons and will be adding an additional 21 episodes to its total count this season, albeit without a few fan-favorite characters.
According to series showrunner Allen MacDonald (“Body of Proof”), Season 11 of “Chicago Med” will include plenty of intrigue, much of which will stem from the intricacy of the medical cases themselves, in addition to the staff’s personal dramas, which have always been a source of drama and curiosity for fans of the show.
With regard to Season 11, MacDonald says he plans “to take everything a step further but still be on the same path,” as reported by Parade. “I told the writers that in every episode [of Season 10], I want everyone to cry in every episode, and I want everybody to laugh in every episode. I want to continue that emotional torture for the audience as much as I possibly can, but take the characters in different directions.”
A few characters will be missing from the plot, however, as Marlyne Barrett (“The Wire”), who played Maggie Lockwood; John Earl Jelks (“New Amsterdam”), who played Dr. Dennis Washington; and Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut (“Star Trek: Picard”), who played Dr. Naomi Howard, are confirmed to be written out of the show. While Lockwood reportedly left the series due to “personal reasons,” very little has been reported as to the reason behind the fictional doctors’ departures. In addition to the staffing changes at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, it appears much of the character development in Season 11 will fall upon the shoulders of actress Sarah Ramos (“The Bear”), whose character must now parse with the knowledge that she carries the gene for GSS Prion, the degenerative disease that killed her mother.
“She’s still going to be the Caitlin Lenox you know and love or don’t love, depending on who you are,” MacDonald said of Ramos’ character, “but she has new information now. We’re trying to have the characters experience things that will set them on a new trajectory.”
Another One Chicago series featuring a major life change is “Chicago Fire,” the franchise’s flagship series starring longest-running cast members Taylor Kinney (“The Forest,” 2016) and Christian Stolte (“Law Abiding Citizen,” 2009), airing immediately following “Chicago Med.”
Kinney’s character, Lt. Kelly Severide, is often a main focus of “Chicago Fire,” but last season’s attention was largely due to his evolving relationship with Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo, “Blood & Oil”), who (spoilers for the Season 13 finale) announced her pregnancy at the end of last season. Although the couple, known to superfans as “Stellaride,” had been planning to adopt, their plans changed when Stella became pregnant.
“I think there’s something that happened there that gave Kidd a little more faith in herself
and in this couple to maybe take that leap,” “Chicago Fire” showrunner Andrea Newman (“Private Practice”) shared with NBC at the end of Season 13. “It’s obviously a big surprise for Severide, but she, at a certain point, decided, ‘OK, I’m just going to let the sort of fates take over because I can manage it, whatever it is.’ And that is something she learned, I think, over the course of the season.”
Otherwise, Station 51 continues to change headed into Season 14 as its mysterious new chief, Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney, “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” 1997), settles into his role as beloved Boden’s (Eamonn Walker, “Oz”) replacement. And just one year after that devastating casting loss, “Chicago Fire” loses three more cast members in Jake Lockett (“The Big Leap”) as Sam Carver, Michael Bradway (“Marked Men,” 2025) as Jack Damon and Daniel Kyri (“The T”) as Darren Ritter, the latter of whom will return for a few new episodes before taking his leave.
Finally, “Chicago P.D.” returns to NBC with perhaps more peril than the rest of Chicago’s first
responders. (Season 13 spoilers ahead.)
After Sgt. Voight (Jason Beghe, “Monkey Shines,” 1988) orchestrated an assassination against corrupt deputy chief Reid (Shawn Hatosy, “Animal Kingdom”), the entire Intelligence Unit is in danger of retaliation and professional reprimand. As the situation gets increasingly dire for Voight himself, rumors have been flying about a possible replacement — perhaps one in the form of Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer, “As the World Turns”), who is reportedly returning this season for a “redemption” (per ScreenRant).
Don’t miss a three-hour trip through Chicago when NBC’s One Chicago franchise returns Wednesday, Oct. 1.

Shocking mysteries are often hiding in the coziest, most cordial villages in England, if the long history of British TV crime dramas is to be believed. In the new streaming series “Murder Before Evensong,” premiering Monday, Sept. 29, on Acorn TV, when a dead body is discovered in a church between services, members of the Champton parish become suspects in the suspicious death.
“Murder Before Evensong” is based on the novel of the same name by British author, personality and priest Richard Coles, the first in his series of Canon Clement mystery novels. “All Creatures Great & Small” and Harry Potter franchise actor Matthew Lewis stars in the new series as Canon Daniel Clement, the Rector of Champton, whose little life as the charge of the parish gets turned upside down when he is brought in to help the murder investigation.
It is 1988 in rural England, and before whatever events led to the discovery of the body in the church, Daniel’s parish is divided. Every night on the news, reports of activists pushing the nation forward flood the national coverage. Meanwhile, in his town, Daniel shares with his congregation that he has got plans to modernize the church on a much smaller scale. Whether the attempt at progression is part of the motivation behind the crime or not, Daniel could not be closer to the action.
A cousin of one of Daniel’s parishioners is the dead man at the center of the series. Brutally killed by a pair of garden shears to the neck, the vicious crime was perpetrated at the foot of the church’s pulpit. Such a dramatic scene must have been set intentionally, but the person behind the devastating attack proves more elusive to the detectives than the scene of the crime suggests.
Tension escalates as the village quickly becomes a dangerous place to be, putting a target on seemingly everyone’s back, including Daniel’s. Per Acorn TV, “as the police move in and the bodies start piling up, Daniel is the only one who can try and keep his fractured community together ... and catch a killer.” The rector knows his people better than anyone, but sniffing out a murderer among his flock is a tall ask, even with the help of his two dachshunds, Cosmo and Hilda.
While Daniel holds healthy skepticism that he will be the one to crack the case, someone very close to him is a bit more eager to dive into the investigation. Daniel lives in the rectory with his mother, Audrey (Amanda Redman, “Scoop,” 2024), a widow who is decidedly tuned in to local goings-on. “A world of secrets, lies and murder under the veneer of middle-class respectability. Just my cup of tea,” Audrey enthusiastically shares in the official trailer for the upcoming series.
Also starring in “Murder Before Evensong” are Amit Shah (“Mr Bates vs. The Post Office”) as DS Neil Vanloo; Adam James (“The Buccaneers”) as Bernard De Floures; Meghan Treadway (“Flack”) as Honor De Floures; Marion Bailey (“All the Light We Cannot See”) as Kath; Amanda Hadingue (“Kaos”) as Dora; Tamzin Outhwaite (“EastEnders”) as Stella Harper; Francis Magee (“The Tourist”) as Edgy; Nina Toussaint-White (“Shetland”) as Jane Thwaite; and newcomer Alexander Delamain as Alex De Floures.
The novel that the six-episode drama is based on is the first in Coles’ bestselling series with five installments to date — potentially good news for anyone already praying for more seasons of “Murder Before Evensong.” The author has lived a storied life beyond writing and serving his own parishioners, having achieved a No. 1 U.K. singles chart hit with “Don’t Leave Me This Way” in 1986 as a member of The Communards, appearing on U.K. panel shows such as “QI” and “Would I Lie To You?,” and coming in third in a recent season of “I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!”
No stranger to the small screen, Coles said in a statement announcing the series, “I am beyond excited that Conan Clement and his flock are to be turned into television by the brilliant team at The Lighthouse and I’m already planning my cameo appearance ... look out for a sinister archdeacon on a sit up and beg bicycle.”
ITV, the network behind the long-running vicar-inspector buddy crime drama and PBS Masterpiece Mystery staple “Grantchester,” announced in June that the period drama would be coming to an end with its 11th season, but that doesn’t mean the faith leader-turned-investigator character is any less interesting to viewers.
The latest film in the Benoit Blanc mystery franchise from writer and director Rian Johnson (“Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi,” 2017), “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” (2025) follows private detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig, “Queer,” 2024) as he unravels the conundrum of a dead body discovered in a church with the help of Rev. Jud Duplenticy (Josh O’Connor, “Challengers,” 2024). Something must be in the air.
Don’t miss the premiere of “Murder Before Evensong,” streaming Monday, Sept. 29, on Acorn TV.

“Steve” (2025)
Cillian Murphy (“Small Things Like These,” 2024) stars in “Steve,” a raw and haunting reimagining of Max Porter’s acclaimed novel “Shy.” Coming to Netflix Friday, Oct. 3, the film is set in the mid-’90s, where over the course of a single day, head teacher Steve (Murphy) struggles to save his reform school from closure while confronting his own mental health challenges. As a documentary crew shadows the institution, Steve’s fight for its survival collides with the personal battles of his students. Among them is Shy (Jay Lycurgo, “Titans”), a troubled teen torn between his past and what lies ahead. Also starring Tracey Ullman (“The Tracey Ullman Show”), Douggie McMeekin (“The Beast Must Die”), Shelley Longworth (“Rules of the Game”) and Youssef Kerkour (“We Might Regret This”), “Steve” is directed by Tim Mielants (“Small Things Like These,” 2024) and produced by Murphy, Porter, Tina Pawlik (“Ted Lasso”) and Alan Moloney (“The Man Who Invented Christmas,” 2017).
“Chad Powers” - Season 1
A brash quarterback gets a second shot at glory in Hulu’s new comedy series “Chad Powers,” premiering on the streamer Tuesday, Sept. 30, with the first two episodes. From co-creators Glen Powell (“Anyone But You,” 2023) and Michael Waldron (“Rick and Morty”), this series follows hotshot quarterback Russ Holliday (Powell), whose bad behavior nukes his college career. Hoping for a shot at redemption, he uses heavy makeup and prosthetics to disguise himself as Chad Powers before joining a struggling Southern football team to revive his football career. The series stars Perry Mattfeld (“In
the Dark”), Quentin Plair (“Tiny Beautiful Things”), Wynn Everett (“This Is Us”), Frankie A. Rodriguez (“High School Musical: The Musical — The Series”) and Steve Zahn (“War for the Planet of the Apes,” 2017). Directed by Payman Benz (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”) and Tony Yacenda (“American Vandal”), Season 1 of “Chad Powers” is executive produced by Powell, Waldron, Ben Brown (“Underground”) and Adam Fasullo (“The Haunting of Hill House”).
“Play Dirty” (2025)
An expert thief rolls out the biggest heist of his life in the action-packed thriller “Play Dirty,” premiering Wednesday, Oct. 1, on Prime Video. Master thief Parker (Mark Wahlberg, “The Fighter,” 2010) and his carefully selected crew — Grofield (LaKeith Stanfield, “Knives Out,” 2019), Zen (Rosa Salazar, “Maze Runner: The Death Cure,” 2018) and a ragtag group of specialists — plan the boldest heist of their lives: to steal a multibillion dollar treasure raised from a sunken ship. What begins as a cunning caper quickly spirals into a deadly game when their target draws the attention of the New York mob, a South Ameri-
can dictator and the world’s wealthiest man, each with their own power and perilous ambitions. Based on the “Parker” book series by Donald E. Westlake, “Play Dirty” also stars Keegan-Michael Key (“Let’s Be Cops,” 2014) as Ed; Chukwudi Iwuji (“John Wick: Chapter 2,” 2017) as Phineas; Nat Wolff (“The Fault in Our Stars,” 2014) as Kincaid; Thomas Jane (“Murder at Yellowstone City,” 2022) as Philly; and Tony Shalhoub (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” 2014) as Lozini. The film is written and directed by Shane Black (“The Nice Guys,” 2016), with Robert Downey Jr. (“Iron Man,” 2008) serving as executive producer.
“The Lost Bus” (2025)
From Academy Award-nominated director Paul Greengrass (“United 93,” 2006) comes “The Lost Bus,” an edge-of-your-seat thriller inspired by true events. Premiering Friday, Oct. 3, on Apple TV+, the film follows a wayward bus driver (Matthew McConaughey, “The Wedding Planner,” 2001) and a determined school teacher (America Ferrera, “Barbie,” 2023) as they make a desperate bid to rescue 22 children trapped in the path of one of America’s
deadliest wildfires. With roads cut off, flames closing in and time running out, the pair must summon their courage as they lead their young passengers through a nightmare of smoke and fire. As the inferno rages, the bus becomes both a prison and a lifeline, forcing impossible choices in the fight for survival. Also starring Yul Vazquez (“Severance”), Ashlie Atkinson (“The Gilded Age”) and Kimberli Flores (“Chicago P.D.”), Jamie Lee Curtis (“Freaky Friday,” 2003), Brad Ingelsby (“Mare of Easttown”), Jason Blum (“Get Out,” 2017) and Gregory Goodman (“Fantastic Four,” 2015) server as producers.
Get into the spooky holiday spirit as the cult horror anthology returns with “V/H/S/HALLOWEEN,” streaming Friday, Oct. 3, on Shudder. A sinister stash of videotapes unleashes six heart-pounding tales, each one unspooling a fresh nightmare drenched in blood, terror and wicked fun. From haunted houses that bite back to costumed killers who prowl in the shadows, every story plunges deeper into the dark heart of the holiday, where nothing — and no one — is what it seems. Tied together by the crackle of static and the hiss of old VHS tapes, these twisted shorts summon the holiday’s most primal fears and unleash them in shocking, unforgettable bursts. The anthology features six chilling short films, including: “Diet Phantasma” (directed by Bryan M. Ferguson, “Bloody Bites”), “Fun Size” (from director Casper Kelly, “Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell”), “Home Haunt” (co-directed by Micheline Pitt-Norman and R.H. Norman, “Grummy,” 2021), “Kidprint” (Alex Ross Perry of “Cinema Toast” directs), “Ut Supra Sic Infra” (“Stories Not to Sleep’s” Paco Plaza serves as director) and “Coochie Coochie Coo” (Anna Zlokovic of “Bite Size Halloween” directs). “V/H/S/HALLOWEEN” is the eighth installment in the V/H/S franchise and the sequel to “V/H/S/Beyond” (2024).

Q: Is this new “Conjuring” movie, “Last Rites,” really the last one? Or is that just the title?
A: Alas, it’s not just an appropriately creepy title — “The Conjuring: Last Rites” (2025), the latest installment in the long-running horror franchise, really seems to be the last one.
You can never say never, of course, especially when talking about hugely successful film franchises. But the studio seems to think so: the official description of the film says it brings together real-life paranormal investigators Lorraine Warren (played by Vera Farmiga, “The Departed,” 2006) and her husband, Ed (Patrick Wilson, “The Phantom of the Opera,” 2004), for “one last case.”
In an interview with JoBlo.com, Farmiga was understandably wistful in saying goodbye to the role. “It’s like the curtains dropped and I’m just standing there, staring into the dark, in kind of the echo of what we’ve done together.”
The emotion is understandable because she’s been playing the role since 2013, across four official “Conjuring” films and three spinoffs (“The Nun,” 2018; “The Nun II,” 2023; and “Annabelle Comes Home,” 2019).
They’ve all been absolute smashes, including “Last Rites,” which was just released in theaters a couple of weeks ago.
Q: I just started watching “The Rainmaker” on TV. Will John Grisham be turning any of his other books into TV shows?
A: It certainly seems likely that legal-drama writer extraordinaire John Grisham will do another TV adaptation, maybe regardless of how well the new “Rainmaker” series does.
Grisham currently has multiple projects at some stage of development, as has always been the case since he exploded on the movie scene in 1993 with the hit adaptation of his book “The Firm.”
Several of these potential projects are TV adaptations. For example, he was recently pitched on a series version of his novel “The Boys From Biloxi,” and as recently as 2021, he was working with HBO on a miniseries adaptation of “A Time for Mercy” (his literary follow-up to “A Time to Kill,” which was made into a hit film in 1996).
If and when any of these projects will hit the screen is unknown, but the Grisham brand is certainly hot.
Early indications say “The Rainmaker,” a new TV adaptation of Grisham’s bestselling novel, is a
hit. Indeed, it may end up being more popular than the 1997 film version starring Matt Damon (“Good Will Hunting,” also 1997), which barely earned more than its budget at the box office. That’s, at least, a little surprising, because historically, Grisham has been less of a success on the small screen. Several TV versions of his books (including ones that were previously hit movies) got early cancelations over the years, including a version of “The Client” that ran for a season on CBS in 1995 before getting axed and a 2012 series based on “The Firm,” which was similarly only given a season, this time on NBC.
But those were made before the streaming era, and streaming has been a big part of “The Rainmaker’s” success. Episodes air first on broadcast TV, on the USA Network, but are re-released a week later on the Peacock streaming service. They’ve proved very popular there — “The Rainmaker” is reportedly the fourth most popular show on Peacock.
Q: I know about some of the show’s other stars, but is the woman who played Sally on “3rd Rock From the Sun” still acting?
A: NBC’s late-’90s sitcom “3rd Rock From the Sun” is, of course, the show that launched the career of film star Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“Inception,” 2010) and was another entry in the long resume of stage-and-screen great John Lithgow (“The World According to Garp,” 1982). But it was an ensemble show, and Kristen Johnston (“The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas,” 2000) was
an equally large part of it as security officer Sally. Unlike her co-stars, she remains a sitcom force to this day, most recently appearing on the Netflix series “Leanne” earlier this year.
And news just broke a few weeks ago that she’ll be joining the cast of the Fox sitcom “Going Dutch” in a “heavily recurring role,” according to Deadline.com. She’ll play a high-ranking NATO general on the show — an echo of her “3rd Rock” character’s military roots.
After “3rd Rock’s” demise in 2001, Johnston initially tried her hand on the big screen, with supporting roles in comedies such as “Strangers With Candy” (2005) and “Music and Lyrics” (2007).
But by the ‘10s, she was very much back on TV, starting with a lead role on another ensemble sitcom, TV Land’s “The Exes,” which ran from 2011 to 2015. A few years later, she joined the cast of already-established CBS sitcom “Mom” and stayed there until its end in 2021.
Throughout, she’s been popping up in extended arcs on hit shows, such as a six-episode run on “ER’s” 12th season in 2005 and, more recently, a nine-episode gig on “The Righteous Gemstones” (playing the delightfully named May-May Montgomery in the HBO comedy’s third season in 2023).
