Southwestern dust covers a lot of truths behind mysterious tales in Oklahoma. One perhaps foolishly fearless citizen journalist, however, is dead set on sweeping his way to the bottom of things in the new FX series “The Lowdown,” premiering Tuesday, Sept. 23 on the network, and streaming the next day on Hulu. Ethan Hawke (“Moon Knight”) stars as Lee Raybon, a self-taught reporter with an obsessive interest in skeletons hiding in a powerful Tulsa, Oklahoma, family’s closet.

Devoted to his truth-finding mission, Lee gets beat up, knocked out, taken hostage and threatened in the official trailer for the upcoming series. Hawke is perfectly sleazy as Lee, who lives in the rare bookstore he operates when he isn’t following the trail of one of his conspiracies. As described by FX, “while Lee’s no idealist, he’s fiercely committed to exposing corruption and unearthing the city’s hidden rot, even when it puts him at risk.”

However, Lee’s commitment to the greater good leaves him lacking in other areas of his life. His 14-year-old daughter Francis, portrayed by “Skeleton Crew” actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong, is often the one left behind when truth comes calling. Despite her father’s proclivity for absenteeism, Francis longs to follow in his footsteps and go where her curiosity leads her.

The case that starts this particular one of Lee’s spirals centers around the Washberg family. Following the publication of Lee’s exposé on the local bigwigs, one unsavory member of the family meets an unfortunate, suspicious end. Dale Washberg’s (Tim Blake Nelson, “Poker Face”) alleged suicide doesn’t sit right with Lee, who starts following a trail of breadcrumbs left by the dead man that points in a different direction than the official story.

Dale’s widow, Betty Jo (Jeanne Tripplehorn, “The Gilded Age”), piques Lee’s interest when her grief over her late husband quickly sends her closer to her brother-in-law, whose local political profile is heating up. Gubernatorial candidate Donald Washberg (Kyle MacLachlan, “Overcompensating”) is paid a visit by Lee in a public urinal of all places in the series trailer. In another scene, the two exchange pointed words, both onto each other.

Up against a family with all the resources in the world to take him down and keep Lee from reaching the ultimate truth that they want to stay hidden, one mysterious man has got the unorthodox journalist’s back. Marty, portrayed by seasoned scene stealer Keith David (“Duster”), pops up at random to encourage Lee in his Washberg investigation.

Also starring in “The Lowdown” are Kaniehtiio

Horn (“Letterkenny”), Siena East (“The Sex Lives of College Girls”), Scott Shepherd (“True Detective”), Tracy Letts (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”), Macon Blair (“Oppenheimer,” 2023), Killer Mike (“Billions”), Cody Lightning (“Echo”), Michael Hitchcock (“Black Monday”) and Peter Dinklage (“Dexter: Resurrection”).

The new series even had a festival premiere at TIFF. The festival’s Primetime program celebrated 10 years of featuring series from around the world, with “The Lowdown” opening this year’s installment alongside five other world premieres.

“The Lowdown” comes from the creator of the Peabody Award-winning FX dramedy “Reservation Dogs,” Sterlin Harjo, who wrote, directed and executive produced the new series. Bringing another story of Oklahoma to FX, Harjo was inspired by a real person, very close to home, when writing Lee.

Harjo told the Los Angeles Times in an interview in August, “the story is fictional, but the character was inspired by someone I worked with named Lee Roy Chapman at This Land Press magazine. He was very much a soldier for truth and I would ride shotgun and make these videos

about the underground, unknown histories of Tulsa.”

Chapman founded the Center for Public Secrets to house neglected stories of Oklahoma’s history, including the video series he and Harjo worked on, appropriately named “Public Secrets.” About the series, Harjo said, “it was about a pent-up need for truth in this city. That push to tell the truth and find truth and tell our story and create a narrative around us. It gave us and the city an identity, something to hold on to.”

“The Lowdown” joins a few mighty recent projects that have brought aspects of Oklahoma’s hidden history to light across genres and formats. The crime drama, of course, joins Harjo’s last series with FX, “Reservation Dogs,” which offered a grounded portrayal of life on a rural Oklahoma reservation through the eyes of a group of teens. The incredible cast of newcomers and veteran actors and writing that leaned into humor and away from melodrama made for a moving watch.

The 2023 Martin Scorsese-directed Apple TV+ film “Killers of the Flower Moon” received

10 Academy Award nominations and helped make Lily Gladstone (“The Wedding Banquet,” 2025) a household name. Inspired by the 2017 non-fiction book of the same name, the drama told the story of the systemic killing of Osage people in 1920s Oklahoma after oil was discovered on their land.

“Watchmen,” the 2019 HBO limited series that served as a sequel to the 1986 comic book of the same name, was set in an alternate universe’s present-day Tulsa. The series, which won several Emmy awards at the 2020 ceremony, highlighted the 1921 Tulsa race massacre.

Don’t miss the premiere of “The Lowdown,” Tuesday, Sept. 23, on FX, and streaming the next day on Hulu.

Brewing up drama

‘House of Guinness’ unveils history of ‘Black Gold’

Nestled snugly in the heart of Dublin’s Liberties neighborhood lies St. James’s Gate, an area of town that served as the city’s western entrance during the Middle Ages. Now a relatively unassuming access to the country’s most popular brewery-cum-tourist attraction, St. James’s Gate could, in some ways, be considered Ireland’s gateway to the rest of the world. For what represents Ireland better than a Guinness?

“House of Guinness,” premiering Thursday, Sept. 25, on Netflix, takes viewers beyond the storied gate and into the family drama, socioeconomic and religious politics and entrepreneurial schemes of Ireland’s most esteemed brewing dynasty.

Best characterized as a family-succession period drama, “House of Guinness” comes from film and television triple threat Steven Knight, who also created the award-winning English gangster drama “Peaky Blinders,” starring Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer,” 2023) and Paul Anderson (“Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” 2011).

“’House of Guinness’ explores an epic story inspired by one of Europe’s most famous and enduring dynasties — the Guinness family,” reads the official description, as reported by Netflix’s press site, Tudum. “Set in 19th-century Dublin and New York, the story begins immediately after the death of Sir Benjamin Guinness, the man responsible for the extraordinary success of the Guinness brewery, and the far-reaching impact of his will on the fate of his four adult children, Arthur, Edward, Anne and Ben, as well as on a group of Dublin characters who work and interact with the phenomenon that is Guinness.”

As divulged by the trailer, upon Sir Benjamin’s death, the patriarch split his “brewery concerns” between his eldest son, Arthur, played in the Netflix series by “Masters of the Air” star Anthony Boyle, and his third child and youngest son, Edward, who is portrayed on screen by “Enola Holmes” (2020) and “Disclaimer’s” Louis Partridge. This decision ultimately excluded the remaining two Guinness children, second-born son Benjamin (Fionn O’Shea, “Normal People”) and sole daughter Anne (Emily Fairn, “The Responder”), which caused its own unique brand of chaos within the family.

“Here’s a deceased father deciding the fate of his children,” Knight told Tudum during a promotional interview for the show. “The will determines the trajectory of each of those siblings. What’s a better place to start a drama than that? They all receive whatever they receive. None of them are happy.”

But, of course, it isn’t just the surviving Guinnesses’ fates that are about to change with the 1868 death of their father, but Ireland’s fate as a

whole, given that political unrest continues to grow in the face of ongoing British control over Irish affairs. And while the Home Rule campaign to build a Dublin-based Irish Parliament is gaining traction across the country at this time, there is still plenty left to get done leading up to the big rebellion on Easter 1916.

“The decisions these characters make about personal issues will have consequences for the future of Ireland, which is quite a burden,” Knight explained to Tudum. “The pressure adds fuel and energy to all of those relationships.”

As the Guinness brewing company finds a path without its long-term guide at the helm — Sir Benjamin led the company to success following his grandfather, Arthur Guinness’, decision to sign a 9,000-year lease on St. James’s Gate Brewery in 1759 — brothers Arthur and Edward face struggles of their own while trying to expand the family brand into the United States with the help of allies from all walks of life. As always, however, not all who offer help are friendly, so the Guinness family must remain discerning amid rife tensions and never-ending periods of rapid social change.

Told across eight hour-long episodes, “House of Guinness” also stars James Norton (“Grantchester”) as Sean Rafferty, a character whose posh Protestantism echoes that of the Guinnesses, threatening to further expose the class disparity between religious sects; Niamh McCormack (“Everything Now”) and Seamus O’Hara (“The Northman,” 2022) as Ellen and Patrick Cochrane, working-class Dubliners whose livelihood, like that of many around them, depends upon Guinness’ success; Danielle Galligan (“Shadow and Bone”) as the seductive and possibly manipulative Lady Olivia Hedges; and Jack Gleeson (“Game of Thrones”) as unpredictable cog in the wheel Byron Hedges, whose privilege pairs with ignorance in such a way that could prove detrimental to him and anyone caught in the crossfire.

Dervla Kirwan (“Ondine,” 2009), Michael McElhatton (“Game of Thrones”), David Wilmot (“Calvary,” 2014), Jean-Pascal Heynemand (“All Creatures Great & Small”) and Hilda Fay (“The Woman in the Wall”) also star, while Tom Shankland (“The Serpent”) and Mounia Akl (“Costa Brava, Lebanon,” 2021) split directorial duties.

Frosting frights and candy nightmares come alive when “Halloween Wars” returns for Season 15, bringing a spellbinding mix of hauntingly sweet and wickedly creative treats to Food Network this Sunday, Sept. 21, to kick off the spooky holiday season.

Actor Jonathan Bennett, best known for his role in the 2004 hit film “Mean Girls,” is back as a host this season as seven teams — each a trio of cake sculptors, sugar alchemists and pumpkin carvers — face off in a series of eerie challenges that demand both artistry and precision in order to turn their visions into edible masterpieces that both scare and impress. As the

competition escalates week by week, viewers can look forward to a season packed with unexpected twists and a festive dose of Halloween spirit.

From childhood monsters to sinister spins on the Boogeyman, this season’s displays are guaranteed to be both spine-tingling and scrumptiously impressive. But, only one team will impress judges Shinmin Li (“Holiday Wars”) and Aarti Sequeira (“Mira, Royal Detective”), who decide which teams move on and which team is eliminated. In the end, one team will walk away with the Halloween Wars championship title and the grand prize of $25,000.

And “Halloween Wars” doesn’t stand alone in the seasonal fun. It anchors Food Network’s annual Halloween

lineup alongside “Halloween Baking Championship” and “Road to Halloween Wars,” making for a frightfully fun tradition for viewers ready to indulge in seasonal thrills and chills.

Before long, Alex is led to the school’s mysterious leader, Evelyn (Toni Collette, “Hereditary,” 2018), who might just be the answer to all his pressing questions. Q: I see a lot of Agatha Christie remakes happening, but what about my favorite cozy mystery, “Murder, She Wrote”? Are they ever going to remake that?

A: “Oh, it’s happening,” said none other than screen megastar Jamie Lee Curtis, who will apparently be this generation’s Jessica Fletcher. Deadline.com kicked off the rumors in December, when it said it “heard” Curtis (“Halloween,” 1978) would play nosy novelist Fletcher in a reboot of beloved ‘80s mystery show “Murder, She Wrote.”

Curtis seems to have confirmed the rumors in July, when Entertainment Tonight cornered her at a red-carpet event to ask about it.

“Oh, it’s happening. We’re a minute away, but yeah, very excited. Very excited. But I’m tamping down my enthusiasm until we start shooting.”

Allow me to tamp down your enthusiasm a little further and point out that we won’t be getting hours upon hours of it the way we did for the original, which ran for 12 seasons on CBS. The reboot is planned as a feature film. And as Curtis said, they haven’t even started shooting yet, so it’s unknown when this will reach the screen.

As Deadline points out (and you allude to in your question), doing it as a movie squares it with the larger cozy-mystery trend happening at the moment.

“Whodunits are hot,” Deadline’s Matt Grobar wrote back in December, citing the new Agatha Christie films made by Kenneth Branagh (starting with “Murder on the Orient Express,” 2017), as

well as the “Knives Out” films (the third installment of which, titled “Wake Up Dead Man,” just debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival).

Q: I just heard that “Family Matters” was a “Perfect Strangers” spinoff. Now I’m wondering, did the actress do any of those other shows? Is she still working?

A: No, Jo Marie Payton, who played Harriette Winslow on “Perfect Strangers” and then “Family Matters,” didn’t do any of the other ABC TGIF shows. But she is still working, so there are plenty of chances to see her in other stuff.

For anyone who didn’t spend most of the 1990s in front of the TV, that all may need to be untangled a little. Payton’s character, Harriette, was introduced first as an elevator operator at the Chicago office building where the two central characters on “Perfect Strangers” — Larry,

played by Mark Linn-Baker (“My Favorite Year,” 1982) and his cousin Balki (Bronson Pinchot, “Beverly Hills Cop,” 1984) — worked.

Her character proved popular enough that ABC built a whole new show, “Family Matters,” around her and her family. It was added to the network’s Friday night sitcom block, dubbed ABC TGIF. But of the many different sitcoms that composed the TGIF block over the decade, Payton only appeared in those two.

She has, however, done plenty of other things since.

For example, she voiced the character Suga Mama on the kids’ sitcom “The Proud Family” in the early 2000s, and is now doing so again on its

spinoff, “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.” She also has a supporting role right now in the Netflix sitcom “Miss Governor.”

If you’re really aching to relive some “Family Matters” vibes, you can check out the 2015 Lifetime movie “The Flight Before Christmas,” which she appeared in along with Reginald VelJohnson (“Die Hard,” 1988), who played her husband on “Family Matters” and actually showed up in an episode of “Perfect Strangers” as well.
