Henry Lloyd Hughes and Helen Mirren star in “The Thursday Murder Club”

BEccentric extracurriculars Osman’s ‘Thursday Murder Club’ meets on Netflix

eginning in the 1970s, “Quincy” ruled investigative television for the older adult demographic. By 1984, Agatha Christie’s titular British amateur detective Miss Marple took up the mantle on BBC. These days, there is a new detective collective coming to the small screen. This time, however, it comes in film form.

Starring Helen Mirren (“The Queen,” 2006), Pierce Brosnan (“The Thomas Crown Affair,” 1999), Celia Imrie (“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” 2011) and Ben Kingsley (“Gandhi,” 1982) in co-leading roles, “The Thursday Murder Club” premieres Thursday, Aug. 28, on Netflix.

Based on the 2020 novel of the same name by English novelist and television presenter Richard Osman, “The Thursday Murder Club” is described by Netflix Tudum as “a whodunit with teeth — false ones, of course.” Set in a retirement community in a fictional town in Kent, England, four friends — ex-intelligence agent Elizabeth (Mirren), former union activist Ron (Brosnan), former psychiatrist Ibrahim (Kingsley) and retired nurse Joyce (Imrie) — would prefer to keep their minds active by solving murders rather than playing bridge like the other residents. But when the group finds themselves face-to-face with a real murder, the stakes are raised and solving the crime becomes much more for the friends than a clever and entertaining way to pass the time.

The novel initially found success among avid readers during the COVID-19 pandemic and its various worldwide lockdowns. As people became tethered to their homes out of safety and necessity, many found themselves — like the Thursday Murder Club itself — looking for clever ways to pass the time in relative solitude. With its whodunnit spirit and geriatric twist on the traditional crime thriller, Osman’s “Thursday Murder Club” grew in popularity until several influential parties became interested in adapting the project from page to screen.

Directed by filmmaker Chris Columbus of “Home Alone” (1990), “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993) and Harry Potter franchise fame, the new film straddles the line between the comedic and the macabre, placing death squarely at the center of the conversation.

“There’s a wonderful mystery at its core, so mystery fans will be very happy,” Columbus told Tudum regarding the film, adding that “thematically, it’s interesting that we’ve got four elderly people who are living in a retirement community and who are fascinated by death and murder. They are facing their own demise, yet at the same time they are obsessed with studying cold cases. I fell in love thematically with that. It’s comedic, but it’s also very emotional.”

While Columbus serves as the film’s sole director, another well-known director is closely attached to the project. Steven Spielberg, the mind behind such films as “Jaws” (1975), “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” (1984) and “Jurassic Park” (1993) among many others, founded Amblin Entertainment, the film company co-producing “The Thursday Murder Club” in conjunction with Netflix. And much like Spielberg with his seven-timeOscar-nominated “The Fabelmans” (2022), author Osman found the basis for his tale lurking in the beauty and absurdity of real life.

“You just sit and chat with these people and they’ve lived these extraordinary lives,” Osman said of the retirees living in his mother’s community — one not dissimilar to the village in “The Thursday Murder Club.” “You hear these amazing stories and gossip and wisdom, [and] you think, ‘These people are so overlooked.’”

“The idea that these people with their wisdom and their invisibility would be the perfect people to solve [a crime] is exactly where ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ comes from,” Osman elaborated, adding, “put them together, and they can achieve anything.”

Given that the trailer for the film reads as a sort of “Knives Out” (2019) meets “Coronation Street” hybrid and that Osman has already penned three more books in his Murder Club book series, it is likely that Netflix subscribers will see a sequel or two should the film’s August premiere be well received. And with such wellversed actors at the helm as Mirren, Brosnan, Kingsley and Imrie, the chances of a positive reception are high.

“This is the finest cast I’ve worked with since ‘Potter,’” Columbus told Netflix at press time, making reference to his work directing the first three Harry Potter films between 2001 and 2004. “They’re just so incredibly well-prepared, and it’s because they do everything. They do theater, they do television, they do film, and they’ve developed those sorts of muscles.”

In addition to his directing duties, Columbus produces “The Thursday Murder Club” alongside Spielberg (who owns the rights to Osman’s book series) and “Across the Universe” (2007) producer Jennifer Todd. On the executive production side, Osman is joined by Jo Burn (“Annihilation,” 2019), Jeb Brody (“The Last Voyage of the Deme-

ter,” 2023), Holly Bario (“The Girl on the Train,” 2016) and Eleanor Columbus (“Nosferatu,” 2024), daughter of the director and actress/producer in her own right.

Supporting the film’s four leads are Jonathan Pryce (“The Two Popes,” 2019), David Tennant (“Doctor Who”), Richard E. Grant (“Gosford Park,” 2001), Tom Ellis (“Lucifer”), Paul Freeman (“Raiders of the Lost Ark,” 1981), Naomi Ackie (“Blink Twice,” 2024), Daniel Mays (“The Bank Job,” 2008), Henry Lloyd-Hughes (“We Were the Luck Ones”) and Geoff Bell (“Kingsman: The Secret Service,” 2017).

Don’t miss the chance to join the “The Thursday Murder Club” when it premieres Thursday, Aug. 28, on Netflix.

‘Upload’ finale event sails toward the Horizen

Death comes for us all, but in the near future world of one sitcom, there are more choices of afterlife than you would expect. The fourth and final season of “Upload” premieres Monday, Aug. 25, on Prime Video. The four-part finale event will be available in its entirety exclusively on the streamer.

Robbie Amell (“EXmas,” 2023) returns as Nathan Brown, who has been through the virtual wringer for three seasons, starting with a lifethreatening car accident and a choice between surgery or being uploaded to the digital afterlife where he will be able to continue to participate in relationships with his loved ones via virtual reality headsets. Choosing the latter, Nathan begins life after death in the digital world of Lakeview, which quickly reveals the inequities of uploaded life.

Rife with hidden expenses and cheaper, lower tiers of digital afterlife akin to purgatory, the actual experience of living forever in a virtual realm is not as advertised. Disillusioned, Nathan leaned on his afterlife handler Nora Antony (Andy Allo, “Chicago Fire”), a living woman who works for Horizen, the tech company that runs Lakeview, and away from his wealthy girlfriend Ingrid Kannerman (Allegra Edwards, “Briarpatch”).

In the upcoming season, per Prime Video, an evil AI threatens to eliminate the digital afterlife, and, “on top of greedy executives, lingering mysteries, plus heartbreak in VR and IRL, our characters are tested like never before.” The only thing that can save humanity from being wiped out at the hands of this AI is teamwork.

Also starring in this season are Kevin Bigley (“Animal Control”) as Luke, Zainab Johnson (“First Time Female Director,” 2023) as Aleesha and Owen Daniels (“Space Force”) as A.I. Guy. “Upload” was created by television legend Greg Daniels, known for “King of the Hill” — which was recently rebooted on Disney+ — the American version of “The Office” and upcoming spinoff mockumentary “The Paper.” Daniels executive produces “Upload” alongside Howard Klein (“Running Point”) and Maxwell Vivian (“American Auto”).

Before entering the digital afterlife, Nathan was a computer programmer on the cusp of making a deal to bring his free Lakeview alternative to life. Those with a financial interest in keeping premium virtual experiences expensive may have had a hand in Nathan’s death, but that is only a small part of the conspiracy that’s unraveled throughout “Upload.”

Nathan and Nora, together with help from Aleesha in the real world and Luke and A.I. Guy in Lakeview, exposed a diabolical political scheme to entice Americans in swing states to upload and lose their right to vote. Later, the two took

Horizen to court with the hope of establishing human rights for uploads.

While they managed to win compensation for families of uploads, the settlement details were sealed, no rights were obtained and Horizen started operating under new branding, calling itself Betta. As Betta, under the guise of accountability, Horizen had Nathan detained for threatening to leak their dirty laundry — and that is where last season’s finale episode left off.

Though Nathan made the choice to upload in part to be with Ingrid, her lies and ulterior motives drove a wedge between them, ending their relationship. While things were complicated with Ingrid, Nathan grew closer to Nora, who was reluctant to share her own feelings for Nathan and jeopardize her career with Horizen and, subsequently, her access to Lakeview, where they were able to spend time together.

The will-they-won’t-they finally came to a head when Ingrid’s secret Nathan clone was discovered, which he downloaded into to better help Nora take down Horizen in the real world and be with her. Nathan stepped out of the virtual world and back into real life but was mistakenly duplicated in error in Lakeview. Two Nathans lived simultaneously: virtual Nathan in love with a changed Ingrid and clone Nathan with Nora.

The Nathan duplicate went under the radar with Horizen until the trial, where he was caught physically by authorities and virtually in Lakeview. In a video call with his loved ones, all he is able to tell them is that there is only one Nathan now. Which one it is still remains a mystery.

In a teaser clip of the upcoming season released at San Diego Comic Con, Aleesha is in training. To prepare for a spy mission to transfer shady files in the virtual world, she reluctantly faces off against a martial arts master, who asks, “If Horizen security sees you and tries to kill you, how will you escape?” Thrown into action, Aleesha slips on her headset, raises her bastons and gets ready for a real battle this season.

Don’t miss the finale of “Upload,” premiering Monday, Aug. 25, on Prime Video. All four parts of the finale event drop on premiere day.

Welcome to sweet treat galore! “The Great American Baking Show: Celebrity Summer” returns with sugar, spice and plenty of frosting in a one-episode special, available now on The Roku Channel.

Led by hosts Casey Wilson (“Gone Girl,” 2014) and Zach Cherry (“You”), celebrity guests Jesse Tyler Ferguson (“Modern Family”), Yara Shahidi (“Black-ish”), June Diane Raphael (“Grace and Frankie”) and Andrew Rannells (“Trolls Band Together,” 2023) step into the sunfilled baking tent, ready to whip up some sweet summer treats — with plenty of laughs and mishaps along the way.

Guiding them are none other than judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, the beloved duo best known for their roles in “The Great British Bake Off.” Throughout the special — which premiered Aug. 16 — the stars face off in three baking challenges designed to test their skills, creativity and ability to keep cool under pressure. But as these stars are put to the test, only one will rise to the occasion and claim the coveted Star Baker title.

The special also marks another step in Roku’s ongoing efforts to expand “The Great American Baking Show” and deepen fan engagement through year-round content.

“We can have the main series where amateur American bakers are competing for an opportunity of a lifetime to become star baker in the tent, and then in other moments —

summer, Super Bowl, holidays — we have the opportunity to use star power to have a bit more fun,” Roku Media head of originals Brian Tannenbaum told Variety.

He continued: “What you see with something like ‘Baking Show’ is it’s one of our top performers on the originals side, particularly in the food space, and there’s also this unique opportunity to tie the franchise to moments that matter.”

WHAT’S NEW ON DISNEY+

“The Last Rhinos: A New Hope”

From the brink of extinction to the edge of a breakthrough, “The Last Rhinos: A New Hope” premieres Sunday, Aug. 24, on National Geographic and streams the following day on Disney+ and Hulu. “The Last Rhinos: A New Hope” is a powerful 44-minute documentary that follows renowned photographer Ami Vitale as she captures the emotional and groundbreaking global effort to save the northern white rhinoceros. With only two females remaining, the species teeters on the edge of extinction. But in a final attempt to reverse their fate, scientists and conservationists from around the world unite in an ambitious mission to create the first surrogate rhinoceros pregnancy — a bold move that could save the species. Told with urgency and compassion, this documentary highlights the innovation, determination and hope driving one of the most extraordinary rescue efforts in wildlife history.

WHAT’S NEW ON HULU

“Ruby Red Handed: Stealing America’s Most Famous Pair of Shoes”

A pair of ruby red slippers, mysterious thieves and a trail of clues down the yellow brick road, “Ruby Red Handed: Stealing America’s Most Famous Pair of Shoes” premieres Tuesday, Aug. 26, on Hulu. This captivating documentary unravels the real-life mystery behind the 2005 disappearance of the world’s most iconic ruby slippers, worn by Judy Garland in “The Wizard of Oz.” Stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, the shoes vanished without a trace for over a decade, sparking countless theories and speculation. With exclusive access to the Grand Rapids Police Department and

interviews with those closest to the case — from museum staff to the FBI — the documentary traces the bizarre case, from unlikely suspects to unexpected breakthroughs, offering viewers an inside look at the strange and often unbelievable investigation that finally led to their recovery. Eamon McNiff (“The Informant: Fear and Faith in the Heartland,” 2021), David Sloan (“Patrice: The Movie,” 2024) Maria Awes (“True Monsters”) and Andy Awes (“Her Last Broadcast: The Abduction of Jodi Huisentruit”) serve as executive producers.

“Love Thy Nader” – Season 1

What does it truly mean to “make it” in Manhattan? Find out when Season 1 of “Love Thy Naders” premieres with all episodes Wednesday, Aug. 27, on Hulu. This coming-of-age reality series follows the lives of four sisters — Brooks, Sarah Jane, Grace Ann and Mary Holland Nader — as they leave their Louisiana bayou roots behind to pursue modeling careers and carve out lives within New York City’s elite fashion and social scenes. As Brooks’ breakout success puts them into the spotlight, they navigate the glittering highs of Manhattan life and stir up plenty of drama in their love lives along the way.

According to Disney+, the series “explores the ultimate question of what it really means to ‘make it.’ In a city where one can burn bright or go up in flames, sometimes the only thing truly needed is a sister who has your back.” “Love Thy Nader” is executive produced by Jimmy Kimmel (“Jimmy Kimmel Live!”), James Dixon (“The Daily Show”) and Brandon Panaligan (“The Real Housewives of Dubai”), with Rachel Tung (“Deliciousness”) as showrunner.

WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX

“Fantasy Football Ruined Our Lives”

A “perfect watch to welcome the return of football season” (per Netflix), sports-comedy film “Fantasy Football Ruined Our Lives” makes its debut Wednesday, Aug. 27, on Netflix. Written by Giulio Carrieri (“The Man Without Gravity,” 2019) and Michele Bertini Malgarini (“Romolo + Giuly: la guerra mondiale italiana”) and with Alessio Maria Federici (“Bambini,” 2006) acting as director, this featurelength flick sees a group of friends thrown into uncertainty when one of their members, Gianni (Enrico Borello, “Forbidden City,” 2025), doesn’t show up to his own wedding. As the reigning champion of their football fantasy league, “Mai una gioia,” Gianni

confuses his friends even further when he never submits a final lineup for their upcoming season. As they search for answers, the friends find themselves overwhelmed by secrets, accusations, death threats and explosive group chats brought to light, leading them to wonder if something bad really did happen to Gianni — because, as the film’s synopsis reads, “sometimes, fantasy football isn’t just a game. It’s a matter of life, bonus points … and revenge.” Giacomo Ferrara (“Suburra,” 2015), Francesco Russo (“A Classic Horror Story,” 2021), Antonio Banno (“Tigers,” 2020), Caterina Guzzanti (“Tutta la vita davanti,” 2008), Diletta Leotta (“Chi ha incastrato Babbo Natale?,” 2021) and Pierluigi Pardo (“Mariottide”) also star.

WHATS NEW ON PRIME VIDEO

“The Terminal List: Dark Wolf” – Season 1 Based on characters from “The Terminal List,” a novel by Jack Carr, this brand-new spy thriller acts as a prequel to the similarly named 2022 television series. Coming to Prime Video, “The Terminal List: Dark Wolf” premieres Wednesday, Aug. 27. While the 2022 iteration of “The Terminal List” saw Navy SEAL James Reece (Chris Pratt, “Parks and Recreation”) unraveling a conspiracy affecting his entire platoon, this latest endeavor joins yet another Navy man in action as Ben Edwards (Taylor Kitsch, X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” 2009) trades in his uniform for the opportunity to work as a CIA agent. Set seven years before the events of “The Terminal List,” this followup series proves itself to be darker, grittier and more heartfelt than its predecessor, with Edwards getting a first-hand look at the “darker side of warfare and its human cost” (per Amazon). Making its debut with a three-episode drop, Season 1 of “The Terminal List: Dark Wolf” also sees appearances from Tom Hopper (“Black Sails”), Rona-Lee Shimon (“Fauda”), Luke Hemsworth (“Gunner,” 2024), Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones & The Six”), Patrick Schwarzenegger (“The White Lotus”) and Constance Wu (“Hustlers,” 2019).

Q: When is “House of the Dragon” coming back?

A: Not for a while, unfortunately. It seems like two-year waits between seasons are just the norm for this show.

HBO’s buzzy “Game of Thrones” spinoff went nearly two years between its first and second seasons (the first debuted in August 2022, and the second in June 2024). At the time, fans hoped that the long break was due to all the disruptions hitting the film business — namely a series of talent strikes during a global pandemic.

But with Season 3 just starting production in the spring, it seems like we’re still another year away from seeing it on screen. It’ll likely debut next summer.

The news gets worse from there, because once that season debuts, there’s only one more to come. Series producer Ryan Condal (“Colony”) has officially stated that “House of the Dragon” will end after Season 4.

Of course, that’s probably not a huge surprise for many fans — at least not for fans of the source material.

Like “Game of Thrones,” “House of the Dragon” is based on the writings of fantasy author George R.R. Martin — specifically his book “Fire & Blood.” And there’s only so much more of that story to tell.

There’s some good news to report, though: a third entry in the franchise will debut in the meantime. “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” another series based on another Martin book,

will debut in “early 2026,” according to HBO.

This one takes place in the same setting, the fictional land of Westeros, but time-wise it comes right in between “Thrones” and “Dragon.”

Q: Is John Landis still directing? His movies always had such a distinctive feel to them.

A: He’s not as prolific behind the camera as he was in his ‘80s heyday, but hitmaker John Landis

(“The Blues Brothers,” 1980) is, in fact, still working.

His most recent screen project is a surprising one: he directed all 26 episodes of “Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten,” a children’s series on Amazon Prime starring Arnold Schwarzenegger (“The Terminator,” 1984). It was released in 2021 and only lasted a season.

The last film he directed was 2010’s “Burke and Hare,” a historical horror comedy about an actual pair of 19th-century grave robbers.

As I said, that’s certainly not a full schedule, but Landis says that’s not entirely his fault. In 2023, he lamented the fact that the pandemic, the Hollywood strikes and the shift from theatri-

cal movies to streaming were all preventing him from working more. He told an audience at the Taormina Film Festival that he was working on a Broadway play while those challenges played out, though he said he was also working on “two features and a television show” at the same time. At least one of those features seems to have been a remake of his 1981 classic “An American Werewolf in London.” It was in development at the time, but nothing’s been done with it since, so it might not happen after all.
