Diamond Dog days are back again with new ‘Ted Lasso’

Just when he thought he was out, they pulled him back in. After more than three years since its last season, “Ted Lasso” returns Wednesday, Aug. 5, to Apple TV for its fourth season. The first installment of the 10-episode season drops on premiere day with new episodes available to stream weekly.

The titular coach, portrayed by “Saturday Night Live” alum Jason Sudeikis, whose contagious eternal optimism forever changed the fictional English Premier League team AFC Richmond before he headed back home to Kansas City, Missouri, in last season’s finale, dusts off his “believe” poster for a different coaching gig.

Ted is back in Richmond upon Thames and in the AFC Richmond facilities, but he’s not coaching the team audiences have grown to love throughout the show’s first three seasons. With the “Richmond Way” chapter now closed, the show was due for a twist. The series gives Ted a new opportunity this season with the club’s fledgling Division 2 women’s team. Club owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham, “Sex Education”) is in need of a coach for her latest expansion of the Greyhounds, and Ted is just the man for the job.

Per Apple TV, “in Season 4, Ted returns to Richmond, taking on his biggest challenge yet: coaching a second division women’s football team. Throughout the course of the season, Ted and the team learn to leap before they look, taking chances they never thought they would.”

By Ted’s side as always is Coach Willis Beard (Brendan Hunt, “Bless This Mess”) and a new, as-yet-unnamed addition to the coaching staff, portrayed by “The Other Bennet Sister” star Tanya Reynolds. Other returning cast members include Juno Temple (“Fargo”) as PR wiz Keeley Jones; Brett Goldstein (“Shrinking”) as gruff retired footballer Roy Kent; Jeremy Swift (“All Creatures Great & Small”) as the nervous but lovable director of operations Leslie Higgins; and Annette Badland (“Run Away”) as stern pub landlady Mae Green.

There has been a considerable amount of time between the third season of “Ted Lasso” and the upcoming new episodes. However, not much time has passed in the show since we saw the characters last. Understandably, there’s been a recast of Ted’s son Henry, now portrayed by Grant Feely (“Obi-Wan Kenobi”). “Lord of the Flies” actor Gus Turner previously portrayed the role of Henry.

Other new series regulars in the upcoming season include Jude Mack (“Such Brave Girls”), Faye Marsay (“Andor”), Rex Hayes

(“The Pact”), Aisling Sharkey (“Jurassic World: Dominion,” 2022) and Abbie Hern (“My Lady Jane”). Tracey Ullman (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and Charlotte Riley (“Trying”) can also be seen in the teaser trailer.

Character details are under wraps for now, but an official teaser trailer for the new season offers up a peek into what is in store. Keeley and Roy lock eyes in the halls of the club facility while Higgins stands between them clutching his diary, making the scene look uncannily like a bride, groom and officiant standing at the altar. Love is in the air but are those also wedding bells ringing?

Short clips of the upcoming season speed by, set to “Rubber Band Man” by Mumford & Sons, including some eager potential footballers sprinting onto the pitch, a warm and insulting welcome back to Ted from a local, Rebecca living the good life with her new beau and a performance art piece by Coach Beard’s wife, Jane (Phoebe Walsh, “Stath Lets Flats”).

The teaser wraps up with a new Lasso-ism, as he explains that the meaning behind his update to the club execs, “FYI the ETA is ASAP, PP,” is, “as soon as possible, pretty please.”

In February, Waddingham spoke to Deadline about the new season focusing on “our Lady Greyhounds,” expressing her admiration of the show, saying, “I love it. I love Rebecca Welton, my character, and the writing is so magnificent. Jason Sudeikis and the writers room, it’s like a finely tuned machine. And the life lessons that you realize that they’re just tipping in here and there, it’s brilliant.”

That writing team has been nominated for four Emmys and this season includes Goldstein and Walsh alongside Julia Lindon (“Survival of the Thickest”). “Ted Lasso” is executive produced by Sudeikis, Hunt, Jack Burditt (“30 Rock”), Joe Kelly (“Detroiters”), Jane Becker (“Nobody Wants This”), Jamie Lee (“Crashing”) and Bill Wrubel (“Modern Family”).

Though he is not returning this season, one

of the stars of the first three seasons of “Ted Lasso” took a leap of his own, from on-screen footballer to professional player. Cristo Fernández (“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” 2023), who portrayed AFC Richmond forward Dani Rojas, recently made his debut in the United Soccer League as forward for the El Paso Locomotive FC in their USL Cup match against New Mexico United.

rom Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster, “Panic Room,” 2002) in “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991), to Jessica Chastain’s (“Molly’s Game,” 2017) portrayal of Maya in “Zero Dark Thirty” (2012), to Kate Winslet’s (“Titanic,” 1997) titular character in “Mare of Easttown,” strong women in law enforcement roles have become pretty par for the course in the world of entertainment — and rightfully so, given that the first women in American law enforcement were hired some 130 years ago, in the 1890s (per Police1.com).

But even when pairing the standouts cited above with all the women in long-standing franchises such as CSI and Law & Order, much of these female characters’ stories centre on the individual worker (and often her fight against prejudice) rather than following groups of women working together on the front lines.

In 2023, Paramount+ launched “Lioness,” a Taylor Sheridan (“Sicario,” 2015) series that made big strides toward changing the existing narrative of women as a supporting role in law enforcement. But all good things must come to an end, as they say, and it appears “Lioness’s” new season could well be its last.

Season 3 of “Lioness” premieres Sunday, Aug. 2, on Paramount+.

Although no official news has broken announcing the series’ cancelation, Collider.com reporter Adam Blevins illustrates the reason for the speculation, writing, “leading star Zoe Saldaña [“Colombiana,” 2011] originally signed a threeseason contract for the show, and there has been no indication that Paramount has re-upped her deal.”

“Lioness” is named after the show’s central CIA Special Operations program, which exclusively recruits and employs women to fight the “War on Terror,” often from the inside out. Although the program and its operations, as shown in the series, are fictional, Paramount has openly stated that the show’s premise is “inspired by a real-life U.S. military program” of the same name, launched by the Marine Corps in 2003 to gain intel amid the Global War on Terrorism following the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the Twin Towers and around the U.S.

“Both the Lioness and Female Engagement Team programs have proven to be a beneficial capability delivering huge gains by interacting with a portion of the population that the male Marines could not engage,” reads a segment from USMC Maj. Ginger E. Beals’ April 5, 2010, report titled “Woman Marines in Counterinsurgency Operations: Lioness and Female-Engagement Teams” for her Masters in Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico, Virginia.

As a television series, Paramount notes, “‘Lioness’ is a show that demands to be watched from the beginning.

“The first season introduces fans to the Lioness program as led by the CIA’s Joe McNamara [Saldaña],” the updated November 2025 article reads. “In it, a young Marine, Cruz Manuelos [Laysla De Oliveira, “Locke & Key”], is recruited to go undercover and infiltrate a dangerous terrorist organization. As the story unfolds, the team tackles risky missions, unforeseen accidents, emotional attachments and explosive reveals.”

In Season 3, “Joe must walk the line between duty and her home life, as hidden networks, foreign operatives and personal betrayals collide,” reads the Entertainment Weekly-provided logline. “Aided by CIA Deputy Director Westfield [Michael Kelly, “Jack Ryan”] and her boss and mentor Kaitlyn [Nicole Kidman, “Nine Perfect Strangers”], Joe confronts enemies operating in the shadows, forcing her to reckon with a war that now reaches into every part of her life.”

And although the details for the Lionesses’ next mission are being kept mum to avoid spoilers, Saldaña told EW during an exclusive interview this past June that the requirements for filming this season were “very demanding.”

“I didn’t even know if I was gonna be able to pull it off,” the Oscar winner added with a laugh.

But indeed she did pull it off, as did Saldaña’s fellow returning cast members Kidman, Kelly, De Oliveira and Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman (“The Shawshank Redemption,” 1994), who returns as U.S. Secretary of State Edwin Mullins.

Additionally, the returning cast includes Dave Annable (“Brothers & Sisters”) as Joe’s husband, Neal; LaMonica Garrett (“Designated Survivor”) as Tucker, a mechanically minded Marine on the Quick Reaction Force; James Jordan (“Landman”) as Two Cups; and Jill Wagner (“Teen Wolf”) as Bobby.

Genesis Rodriguez (“The Umbrella Academy”), Austin Hebert (“Unbelievable”), Jonah Wharton (“The Rookie”), Thad Luckinbill (“The Young and the Restless”), Hannah Love Lanier (“Road House,” 2024) and Celestina Harris (“Dr. Death”) also reappear this season, while “Yellowstone” actor Ian Bohen joins the cast as Grady, a “by-the-book Delta Force operator and primary K-9 handler, skilled in battlefield tactics.”

Fans of “Undercover Boss” and service industry shows such as “Bar Rescue” and “Kitchen Takeover” will delight in Food Network’s newest series, “Kitchen Undercover,” which launched Tuesday, July 28.

Airing its second episode Tuesday, Aug. 4 (and streaming next day on HBO Max), “Kitchen Undercover” follows chef Nestor Milian across each episode as he is hired by a failing California restaurant. Weaving his way into the fabric of the team over four days, he makes note of every detail that could be contributing to the eatery’s worsening reputation. Meanwhile, Antonia Lofaso (“Guy’s Grocery Games”) watches the drama unfold

from a nearby van via hidden cameras, waiting for her chance to teach the owners how to turn the failing establishment into a newfound success.

“From toxic team dynamics to tragic food, nothing stays hidden for long,” the Food Network series description reads. “When the truth about why customers aren’t coming back is exposed, Antonia steps in to shake things up, calling out the chaos and whipping these teams into shape. With the clock ticking and closure looming, only time will tell if Antonia can turn these hot messes into hot spots.”

In last week’s episode, Milian and Lofaso paid a visit to Los Angeles diner Gritz N’ Wafflez, owned and operated by Texas native Jurni Rayne. Inspired by her upbringing on Southern soul food, Rayne cooks to honor her great-

grandmother, Mama Zula, whose “spirit is the heart of our kitchen,” noting on the Gritz N’ Wafflez website that “her legacy lives on in every bite.”

Unfortunately, “despite widespread praise for its Southern comfort cuisine,” reads the Food Network pilot description, “owner Jurni has faced mounting financial pressure and an operation on the brink of collapse,” leading to an intervention led by the “Kitchen Undercover” team.

“My Life With the Walter Boys” – Season 3 One confession, one heartbreak and one summer to fix it all, Season 3 of “My Life With the Walter Boys” premieres Thursday, Aug. 6, on Netflix. The last time we saw the Walters, Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez, “On My Block”) and Cole (Noah LaLonde, “Criminal Minds: Evolution”) finally confessed their love for each other, but the moment was interrupted when Jackie’s boyfriend — and Cole’s own brother, Alex (Ashby Gentry, “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”) — shows up, heartbroken after overhearing every word. Season 3 picks up once the dust settles, with Jackie and Cole figuring out how to mend their bond with Alex after betraying him. Q: Is there any chance that Netflix will again show “Still Game”? We miss it!

A: It’s quite likely just a matter of time, but how much is anyone’s guess.

That’s because, essentially, beloved old shows like the Scottish sitcom “Still Game” cycle between the various streaming services. Presumably, this is so that each service can be seen to have content appealing to, for example, Scotophiles (I learned a new word today!) like yourself.

“Still Game,” which originally aired in the U.K. from 2002 to 2019 (though with a nine-year break between Seasons 6 and 7), has now moved from Netflix to Amazon Prime Video. So for you, the solution — the one that Amazon would like you to follow, anyway — would be to subscribe to Prime Video to get access to it again.

But given that it debuted in the 2000s, there’s another option: full seasons of “Still Game” were released on DVD, as was the norm back then, so you could track those down (assuming you have a player) and not have to worry about your access being revoked again.

This is all starting to sound like a plot from “Still Game,” which was all about finding fault with the modern while perhaps overcelebrating what came before.

But if, out of the thousands of shows and films on Netflix, this is the one you’re missing, perhaps that parallel won’t bother you much.

Q: I haven’t seen Brooke Shields in a while. Is she still acting?

A: Brooke Shields (“The Blue Lagoon,” 1980) seems to now be enjoying the fruits of being one of the great modern screen stars. That’s the best explanation for her resume over the past five years, which includes: toplining her own detective show (“You’re Killing Me”), doing a brief pop-in in a cult-favorite TV show (“When Calls the Heart”) and also doing a voice for a Batman podcast (“Batman: The Audio Adventures”).

It’s the resume of an actor who can just take whatever role tickles her fancy.

If you’re really wanting a Shields fix, “You’re Killing Me,” which debuted this year, is your best bet. She plays the lead character on the show, a

bestselling novelist trying to solve her friend’s murder.

It’s produced by the Acorn TV streaming service and has already been renewed for a second season — like the first, it’ll be six hour-long episodes. But given that the first season just finished airing in June, it’ll likely be a while before we see it.

Meanwhile, as I said, she’s also been filling her time with a truly random assortment of guest spots.

The most notable of these has been recurring character Charlotte Thornton in the moderncowboy romance series “When Calls the Heart.” She showed up for three episodes earlier this year (the show’s impressive 13th season), but she actually launched the role back in the third season in 2016.

Will she return again? Hard to say. “Heart” has shown no signs of slowing down, at least. The Hallmark series has already been renewed for a 14th round.

Q: Is William Fichtner coming back for the second season of “Talamasca: The Secret Order”? I was pleased to see him on TV again.

A: The news is worse than you fear: not only is William Fichtner (“Prison Break”) not coming back, neither is “Talamasca: The Secret Order.”

The series, part of the sprawling supernatural universe of author Anne Rice of “Interview With the Vampire” fame, premiered on AMC in 2025,

but it’s already been canceled after just one season.

But I might actually be a bit premature in reading the eulogy for Fichtner’s character. In announcing the cancelation, AMC offered a glimmer of hope, suggesting some of the characters could return — along with the shady Talamasca organization — in one of the network’s other two Rice shows: “Interview With the Vampire” or “Mayfair Witches.”

“We are proud of the series and grateful for the efforts of everyone involved,” the network said in a release. “The Talamasca has a storied place within the Anne Rice Immortal Universe, and we expect to see at least some of these characters, and the organization itself, in future expressions of the franchise.”

Meanwhile, there’s no shortage of other places to catch longstanding character actor Fichtner. He guest starred earlier this year in the buzzy dramedy “Beef” and just co-starred in the bigscreen indie sci-fi thriller “The Outer Threat,” released in July.

More excitingly (for a certain set of fans, anyway), he has a central role in the upcoming MGM+ series “Bosch: Start of Watch,” a prequel series to the beloved cop show “Bosch.” No release date has been announced for that one.
