F‘Dead City’ finds new life ‘TWD’ spinoff welcomes new showrunner for Season 3

rom the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s roughly 37 completed films and 17 television series (as of writing) to popular crime drama procedurals belonging to the Law & Order, CSI and One Chicago worlds, on-screen franchises are getting difficult to stay on top of. Although each series typically averages one or fewer seasons each year, sequels, prequels and spinoffs make for lots of content to keep viewers not just interested but immersed.

Amid all the available options across cable and streaming, AMC is home to a franchise that has been particularly hard to keep up with — which is especially surprising given that it is walking.

“The Walking Dead: Dead City,” the fifth series in the Walking Dead franchise created by Frank Darabont (“The Mist,” 2007) from source material by graphic novelist Robert Kirkman (“Invincible”) and artists Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard, premieres its third season Sunday, July 26, on AMC and AMC+.

As a graphic novel series, The Walking Dead franchise lived its first life from October 2003 to July 2019. Its second life, meanwhile, began a decade before its source material concluded when AMC acquired television adaptation rights directly from Kirkman in 2009. By 2010, “The Walking Dead” show was off and running (so to speak); its premiere raking in a then AMC-record-breaking 5.3 million viewers for the pilot.

“It’s a good day to be dead,” AMC president Charlie Collier said at the time of the premiere. “We are so proud of this series, its depth of storytelling and the remarkable talent attached.”

Even with the overwhelming feedback, it would have been hard to tell just how far AMC’s dead would go on to walk over the next couple decades.

“The Walking Dead: Dead City” follows other spinoff series “Fear the Walking Dead,” “The Walking Dead: World Beyond” and the 2022 anthology series “Tales of the Walking Dead.”

Launched by series creator Eli Jorne (“Wilfred”) mid-June 2023, “Dead City” is the first sequel, chronologically, to the original AMC “Walking Dead” series.

Beginning five or six years after the events of “The Walking Dead,” “Dead City” follows Maggie (Lauren Cohan, “The Boy,” 2016) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, “Supernatural”) as they venture onto New York’s Manhattan island to rescue Maggie’s son (Logan Kim, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” 2021), who was kidnapped and presumed taken into the heart of the once-thriving city. Still surrounded by the undead, however, the pair must repeatedly put aside their differences to conquer the Walkers and survive in a dangerous changing world.

In Season 3, AMC reports that Maggie and Negan “finally put aside their differences to build the first thriving community in Manhattan since the apocalypse, but when chaos in the city begins to arise, they are forced to question: have they learned from their old wounds or will their dark past spell doom for the entire city?”

“I think we played as much hate as we could over the last 10 years,” Morgan told Deadline following “Dead City” Season 3’s Monte Carlo premiere. “[W]e’ve now known each other longer than probably anyone else alive in this world, and for these characters to realize that to survive they need each other was a big revelation, and then [we get] to do that with a bit of a sense of humor at times as well.”

It is possible that the moderate tonal shift is due to Seth Hoffman (“Prison Break”) taking on the showrunner duties previously ascribed to series creator Jorne, but Hoffman is the first to recognize that the show — and Season 3, in particular — is bigger than any one person or single idea.

“This is a season that is about immigration,” Hoffman told Deadline when questioned about the series’ relevance to the world as we know it today. “This is a world where people are afraid of other people, and in this season, we absolutely are asking the question: ‘Do you need to be afraid of other people?’ As the season progresses, people will have different opinions on that, as people in the world have different opinions. I think it’s important to give voice to different people feeling different things.”

He continued: “[T]his is a show that, even though it’s not set in present day, wants you after watching it to consider the present-day world.”

AMC has remained fairly tight-lipped about which actors/characters would be returning alongside Cohan and Morgan this season, but Hoffman told Radio Times that a major part to his approach was considering that “one thing that fans would want to see in this spinoff is characters that maybe we haven’t seen for a long time.”

Although the showrunner stated he is “not at liberty to confirm or deny” who from the past is returning, he did acknowledge that “there are probably some super fans who have some ideas” about it.

A few faces fans can expect to see, however, are those of Jimmi Simpson (“Westworld”), Aimee Garcia (“Lucifer”), Raúl Castillo (“Smile 2,” 2024) and Michael Emery (“Sebastian,” 2025).

Don’t walk, run to your TV set! It’s time to reveal what Maggie and Negan have created in Manhattan when all hope seemed to be lost. Season 3 of “The Walking Dead: Dead City” premieres Sunday, July 26, on AMC and AMC+.

Disgraced boxer comes for what is his in ‘Fightland’

There are few things more human than hand-to-hand combat. We have been settling grievances and making entertainment from fight sport for as long as our species has walked upright. Boxing in one form or another has evolved throughout human history in every corner of the world, sometimes in especially dangerous ways. In a brand-new drama, one enterprising man running a crime syndicate in London, England, ruins the life of a boxing champion, the star of his promotional firm, just as he reaches the peak of his career in the ring.

In “Fightland,” premiering Friday, July 31, on Starz, Maduka “Duke” Kilroy (Howard Charles, “The Red Line”) is released from prison and sets off on a risky path of vengeance that leads to his former promoter, Kingsley Marshall (Nicholas Pinnock, “For Life”). After eight years behind bars, Duke gambles his newfound freedom in order to avenge the death of his brother. Working with a power-hungry cartel in order to get close to Kingsley’s operation, Duke hunts down the man who pulled the rug out from under him almost a decade ago.

There is one problem, though, aside from Duke jumping headfirst into criminal activity straight after his release. No one has seen Kingsley in months. He is in the wind and has left the operation of his empire to his family. Like any good drama, the lives of the characters in “Fightland” weave a complicated web. Joy Marshall (Deborah Ayorinde, “Them”), Kinglsey’s wife, is the love of Duke’s life. Now that she, along with Kingsley’s grown children Cebella “Cece” Marshall (AnitaJoy Uwajeh, “Vampire Academy”) and Ezekiel “Zeek” Marshall (Charles Babalola, “The Outlaws”), are running Kingsley’s boxing, gambling and drug enterprises, every facet of Duke’s emotional core is tied up in his revenge plot.

Also starring in “Fightland” are Tahirah Sharif (“The Tower”) as Kim Harper, a ring girl for Marshall Productions who befriends Duke; Tyler Conti (“Hollyoaks”) as Justin “Jay” Hall, Duke’s childhood friend; and Richard Pepple (“Beasts of No Nation,” 2015) as Gary “Gazzer” Kilroy, Duke’s father, a former fighter who now runs a gym.

The upcoming eight-episode series is the latest show to come out of the collaboration between Starz and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s (“Get Rich or Die Tryin’,” 2005) G-Unit Films and Television Inc. Set and filmed in England, this series is a coproduction with British broadcaster Sky Atlantic. Jackson also serves as executive producer for the series. “Fightland” was created by Daniel Fajemisin-Duncan (“Save Me”), Marlon Smith (“New Blood”), Damione Macedon (“Power”) and Raphael Jackson Jr. (“Survivor’s Remorse”).

The long road to the top of the boxing world suddenly ended for Duke the night he was

crowned world heavyweight champion. When he witnesses his brother’s fatal assault that same night, Duke loses his way. As a result, the Britishborn boxer spends eight years in a Nevada prison. Duke’s time inside passes slowly while the lives of everyone he knows continue thousands of miles away. Before his release, he learns a devastating truth that sets him off on a warpath as soon as he sets foot on the other side of the prison gates.

In order to get to Kingsley, Duke starts up with a rival cartel that is clawing its way to the top of London’s illegal drug market. That role will inevitably put Duke face-to-face with Cece and Zeek, who are already at the top of the food chain that’s the city’s drug trade. If he must knock down the rest of Kingsley’s family, Duke is prepared to do it if it means he can finally face the kingpin who derailed his life.

Trying to fill their father’s shoes, Cece and Zeek think they know who they must trust. In the official trailer for the series, Cece very earnestly tells her brother, “with Dad gone, we’re all we’ve got.” United they may be, they are not expecting what is coming when Duke returns to London. The trailer highlights a montage of Duke setting up a job that seems to result in a massive loss for the Marshalls — a £3.5 million loss, to be exact.

Jackson spoke to Deadline last June about his connection to London, saying, “You know, everybody loves London. If you’re from New York, or you’re a recording artist from America in general, the first stop and your first dose of international love is London.”

The “Power Book II: Ghost” star also explained the reasoning behind his expanding television ventures, saying, “my audience, my core audience — the people that were enjoying my music in the very beginning — is at home,” he said. “They’re older. They’ll understand the entertainment choices that I make creatively. I’ve used music to merge with entertainment.”

Q: I saw a movie a long time ago with Jeff Goldblum and Emma Thompson as the romantic leads. I loved it at the time but haven’t been able to find it since. Can you help?

A: Quirky but not enough to be considered a cult classic and star-studded but not with typical headliners, “The Tall Guy” (1989) probably deserves more love than it ever really got.

Dating all the way back to 1989, the British comedy film featured, as you say, Jeff Goldblum (“The Fly,” 1986) as an American actor working in England as a sidekick to an awful but successful British stage comedian (played by another notable name, Rowan Atkinson, “Johnny English,” 2003).

Goldblum’s character eventually falls for a nurse (Emma Thompson, “Sense and Sensibility,” 1995) he meets shortly before landing his big break: the lead role in a stage-musical adaptation of “The Elephant Man.” (Like I said, quirky.)

Even with all that on-screen talent, it’s perhaps more notable for the star who wrote the script: Richard Curtis, who at the time was still a TV guy, best known for writing the “Blackadder” series with Atkinson in the lead.

“The Tall Guy” came just a couple of years before Curtis and Atkinson would team up again, with even greater success, for the “Mr. Bean” series. And it was Curtis’s first big-screen film — his second, 1994’s “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” would establish him as a romantic-comedy icon.

Knowing the name of “The Tall Guy” is one

thing, but finding it isn’t so easy. None of the major streaming or video-on-demand services are carrying it at the moment, and the DVD (if you even still have a player) seems to be out of print. Used copies are available if you’re desperate, or you could wait to see if it shows up on streaming. It’s apparently available on Amazon Prime in Italy and Spain, so perhaps it’s just a matter of time.

Q: Is Christopher Lambert still making movies?

A: Christopher Lambert (“Highlander,” 1986) is still making movies but not really for us. But to

be fair, North America was only ever really borrowing him.

Most of his work has been in Europe, where he hails from (though, interestingly, he was actually born in the U.S. — his father was a French diplomat). That was true even during the mid’80s and early ‘90s, when he was also doing American films, starting with “Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes” (1984) and then his real breakout role in 1986’s “Highlander” and its sequels, “The Quickening” (1991), “The Gathering” (1993) and “The Final Dimension” (1994).

It was during all that American activity that he also did his best-known French film, the deeply odd thriller “Subway” (1985), about a thief who hides out among a subculture of weirdos who live in Paris’s subway tunnels.

He’s continued that pattern since, peppering American gigs in between Euro ones.

His most recent project you might have seen (assuming you’re not French yourself) was a brief arc in the sixth season of the NBC drama “The Blacklist” in 2019, playing a top-notch international assassin. Before that, he had a small part in the big-screen ensemble comedy “Hail, Caesar” in 2016.

His upcoming projects are all very European: his next is the Croatian crime-thriller “A Man Worth Killing,” due out later this year. He’s also attached to a French noir thriller, titled “Red Gecko,” but that’s still in the early stages of development and may not actually happen.

Q: What has Corey Stoll been doing since “Billions”?

A: Corey Stoll’s (“Ant-Man,” 2015) post“Billions” strategy seems to be to specialize — namely, in female-led murder miniseries.

The financial thriller series “Billions” ran from 2020 to 2023 on Showtime. Since then, his two notable roles were chief supports in a couple of eight-episode miniseries released on streaming services.

In Amazon Prime Video’s “The Better Sister,” released in 2025, he played the victim of the murder that the show is built around but nonetheless managed to appear in every episode.

In Apple TV’s “Imperfect Women,” released earlier this year, he played a more mysterious character who still figured heavily in the bloody proceedings.

He has another, similarly paranoid thriller miniseries in the pipe: he’ll star along with Julia Stiles (“10 Things I Hate About You,” 1999) in the indie series “Recap,” which is in post-production now without either a release date or even a broadcaster lined up.

Meanwhile, for variety, he also has a role in the action-comedy “Matchbox: The Movie,” a film based on the Matchbox toy cars (there’s also a CIA angle in there somewhere, because why not). It’s due out in October.
