Dragons on parade

Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy, “Truth Seekers”) returns to the Seven Kingdoms’ capital in “House of the Dragon” Season 3, premiering on HBO and HBO Max Sunday, June 21. Following plenty of scheming among rival factions in Season 2, series writers have promised “all-out war” as Rhaenyra arrives in King’s Landing with a hunger for iron and a thirst for blood. Early this year, American author and worldbuilder extraordinaire George R.R. Martin met with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss his eternally popular Game of Thrones empire, a creation which cemented the author’s transformation from “son of a New Jersey longshoreman who got his start by selling monster stories to schoolmates for a dime apiece” to “the country’s most recognizable author aside from Stephen King.”

Martin has been a recurring topic of discussion in the entertainment industry since the April 2011 premiere of “Game of Thrones” on HBO, an adaptation of his beloved A Song of Fire and Ice literary series which released its first installment (the similarly titled “A Game of Thrones”) in 1996. But in recent years — and as fans of the author’s work will know — Martin has become a rather more contentious figure in the pop culture sphere, particularly due to the perpetually pending arrival of A Song of Ice and Fire’s final two novels; novels that have been promised since the 2011 publication of the series’ most recent novel, “A Dance with Dragons.”

And while a decade ago Martin told The Hollywood Reporter “I have to finish the next book ... I’m trying to cut back on anything that I can to clear my decks and get this done,” his new approach is a softer one: “I want to finish,” he told THR interviewer James Hibberd in January, while reaffirming that he is very much not ready to give up on the writing process just yet.

“I would hate that,” Martin told Hibberd. “[Giving up] would feel like a total failure to me.”

So, while Martin sits at his keyboard, his fans must keep their eyes affixed to their television sets where, mercifully, another season of “House of the Dragon” is about to begin.

“House of the Dragon” Season 3 premieres Sunday, June 21, on HBO and the HBO Max streaming service.

“House of the Dragon” is Martin’s second series with HBO, having premiered its freshman season a little more than three years after “Game of Thrones” ended and shy of four years before the universe’s newest installment, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” premiered. The series follows the silvery-blond Targaryen clan as they battle for succession 172 years before the birth of “GOT” tragic heroine Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke, “Ponies”).

The series’ first season boasts a 90% approval rating from critics (and 82% from viewers) on RottenTomatoes.com, with reviewers praising the show’s world-building, political intrigue and acting. Season 2’s approval, however, fell to 84% and 72% among critics and audiences, respectively, as the pace slowed and the drama became

more character driven. Never fear, though, because Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy, “Truth Seekers”) is back in King’s Landing this season — and she comes bearing dragons.

No official HBO season description exists as of writing, but according to Entertainment Weekly, who released an exclusive “HOTD” story titled “Burn, Baby, Burn” on May 26, the Season 3 premiere “brings us the Battle of the Gullet, one of the most violent sea battles in the history of this fantasy world.

“The scarring aftermath of this moment will carry both the Greens (supporters of King Aegon’s [Tom Glynn-Carney, ‘Dunkirk,’ 2017] claim to the Iron Throne) and the Blacks (supporters of Queen Rhaenyra) through to the inevitable conclusion,” continues the synopsis.

“It’s all-out war,” said actor Ewan Mitchell (“Wuthering Heights,” 2026), who plays Prince Aemond Targaryen, in an interview with EW. “It’s just a blitz straight out of the gate.”

From a logistical perspective, showrunner and Martin’s “HOTD” co-creator Ryan J. Condal

(“Colony”) told EW that the Season 3 premiere is “arguably the craziest episode of television ever made.”

This commitment to action (and dragons!) is a huge relief for the many fans who were disappointed by Season 2’s lackluster conclusion in August 2024. But with nearly two years to ruminate, Martin’s mid-January exit due to creative differences and Condal’s HBO deal extended into 2029, “House of the Dragon” now has plenty of wind under its scaled and leathery wings.

“When you’re a showrunner, you’re always in the position of having to balance storytelling and the resources that you have available to tell that story,” Condal said, per The Hollywood Reporter. “We are trying to give the Gullet — which is arguably the second most anticipated action event of ‘Fire & Blood’ — the time and the space that it deserves.

“We also wanted to build some anticipation toward it,” the showrunner added, “so I apologize for the wait.”

tains eight episodes and stars Matt Smith (“Doctor Who”), Fabien Frankel (“The Serpent”), Olivia Cooke (“Bates Motel”), Steve Toussaint (“Before We Die”), Sonoya Mizuno (“Maniac”), Kurt Egyiawan (“Beasts of No Nation,” 2015), Rhys Ifans (“Notting Hill,” 1999), Matthew Needham (“Napoleon,” 2023) and Jefferson Hall (“Oppenheimer,” 2023), alongside Glynn-Carney, Mitchell and D’Arcy.

‘The Bear’ concludes with one more sizzling season

If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen. A certain acclaimed Chicago restaurateur really took that idiom to heart and now, after a yearlong wait, viewers are about to witness the fallout of that monumental decision.

The FX-produced series “The Bear” returns for its fifth and final season Thursday, June 25, on Hulu and Disney+. All eight episodes of the Emmy-winning comedy’s upcoming season will be available to stream on premiere day.

The last season of “The Bear” saw Carmy Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White, “Shameless”) reach his limit after the weight of four seasons of mounting stress from the restaurant opening, trauma from the exacting demands of his past in haute cuisine and strained, grief-laden relationships with his family finally broke his passion and drive to keep The Bear afloat.

Now the fate of the restaurant rests on the shoulders of Carmy’s partners. Sydney Adamu (Ayo Edebiri, “After the Hunt,” 2025) ultimately accepted a change to the partnership agreement that freed Carmy from his responsibilities and included Richie Jerimovich (Ebon Moss-Bachrach, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” 2025), along with Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto (Abby Elliott, “All Her Fault”), as a literal ticking clock counted down the seconds they had left to become profitable or close their doors. After everything the two chefs had gone through to open The Bear and bring their vision to life, Carmy has stepped away the moment his and Sydney’s project passed the proof test.

The new season picks the story back up the morning after last season’s finale and, per FX, “with no money, the threat of a sale and a torrential storm in their way, the new partners must band together with the rest of the team to achieve one last service, hoping they’ll finally earn a Michelin star.” Ultimately, they learn that what makes a restaurant “perfect” might not be the food, but the people.

Also starring this season are Lionel Boyce (“Project Hail Mary,” 2026) as pastry chef Marcus Brooks; Liza Colon-Zayas (“In Treatment”) as sous chef Tina Marrero; Matty Matheson (“Born to Lose,” 2026) and Ricky Staffieri (“This Is Us”) as brothers Neil and Ted Fak, employees of The Bear; Oliver Platt (“Chicago Med”) as Uncle Jimmy, the main financial backer of The Bear; Will Poulter (“Dopesick”) as Marcus’ mentor, chef Luca; and Jamie Lee Curtis (“Scarpetta”) as Carmy’s estranged mother, Donna.

While doing press for his portrayal of music legend Bruce Springsteen in the 2025 biopic “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,” White spoke to Variety about the show last November, shortly before Season 5 started production. White reflected on the connection he feels to Carmy

and the story of “The Bear,” having a different relationship to the show than he had experienced in previous ensemble work.

“There were some years on ‘Shameless’ where I felt more connected to Phillip Gallagher and there were some years I didn’t. I feel really connected to Carmy and I feel really connected to [’The Bear’ creator] Christopher Storer [‘Ramy’] in a way that probably just due to my age I didn’t feel with [‘Shameless’ showrunner] John Wells always,” White explained.

“Those were very separate things, kind of the story coming at me as an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old, versus the story coming at me from Chris, who I really consider a friend and a peer.”

Storer created “The Bear” and serves as executive producer of the series alongside Josh Senior (“Small Town, Big Story”), Cooper Wehde (“Bo Burnham: Inside,” 2021), Tyson Bidner (“Best Medicine”), Hiro Murai (“Widow’s Bay”), Rene Gube (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) and Matheson. Culinary producer for the show is Courtney Storer (sister to Christopher), owner of the catering company Coco’s To Go.

For those who haven’t gotten caught up in the whirlwind of “The Bear” and missed out on tuning in so far, it is a satisfyingly stressful watch that highlights the passion of people who aspire to careers in restaurants from fine dining to humble diners. The series begins as, following the death of his older brother Mikey Berzatto (Jon Bernthal, “His & Hers”), Carmy inherits his Italian beef sandwich shop and he uses his experience in Michelin-starred restaurants to bring his own vision to life.

A surprise drop of a special episode in May broadened the understanding of Mikey’s character, whose death touched everyone in “The Bear,” directly or indirectly. The episode, titled “Gary,” is a flashback to a work trip that Mikey and Richie take to Indiana.

“Intimate and revealing, it illuminates the two friends’ complicated relationship, uncovering new layers of Mikey’s mental state while offering crucial insight into the man Richie is when audiences first meet him in Season 1 — adding emotional context that reframes their story from the very beginning,” says FX.

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” - Season 2

The war against the Fire Nation is far from over as Season 2 of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” arrives Thursday, June 25, on Netflix. After a bittersweet victory saving the Northern Water Tribe from the invading Fire Nation, Avatar Aang (Gordon Cormier, “Lost in Space”), Katara (Kiawentiio, “It: Welcome to Derry”) and Sokka’s (Ian Ousley, “13 Reasons Why”) next mission takes them deep into Earth Kingdom territory, where they must persuade a reclusive Earth King (Justin Chien, “The Season”) to join the fight against the fearsome Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim, “Hawaii Five-0”).

“But the most dangerous enemies of all may be those unseen, for soon Avatar and his friends will learn that nothing is as it seems in a city of walls and secrets” (per Netflix). Based on the animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” the new season of this live-action adaptation sees the return of showrunner Albert Kim (“Percy Jackson and the Olympians”), writer Audrey Wong Kennedy (“Amazing Stories”) and director Jabbar Raisani (“Iron Man,” 2008).

“Little Brother” (2026)

John Cena (“The Suicide Squad,” 2021) and Eric Andre (“The Eric Andre Show”) learn the true meaning of family in “Little Brother,” streaming Friday, June 26, on Netflix. Directed by Matt Spicer (“Ingrid Goes West,” 2017), with a screenplay by Andrew Mogel (“Huge in France”) and Jarrad Paul (“Yes Man,” 2008), “Little Brother” follows Rudd (Cena), a thriving real estate agent whose world is upended when he receives a phone call that his brother is in the hospital after a car accident. But when he arrives to find Marcus (Andre) — a childhood friend he met through a charity program — instead of his actual brother, he brings him home at the insistence of his wife, played by “The White Lotus” star Michelle Monaghan. As Marcus makes himself at home, Rudd plots to get him out of his house.

An adaptation of the hit Kakao Webtoon, the Korean limited series “See You at Work Tomorrow!” is set to arrive Monday, June 22, on Prime Video. From “The Sound of Your Heart” producer Hyunwoo Thomas Kim, this series stars Seo In-guk (“The Master’s Sun”) and Park Ji-hyun (“Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum,” 2018) as colleagues whose lives slowly collide inside a demanding corporate world. “Where Pretty Girls Die” (2025)

A group of college students find out “Where Pretty Girls Die” when director Christine Conradt’s (“As Luck Would Have It,” 2021) 2025 crime thriller lands Thursday, June 25, on Hulu. When a criminology student (Kim Sandwich, “Arca,” 2021) and her true-crime club investigate a four-year-old disappearance in rural Georgia, they discover it’s tied to a string of disappearances that are the work of a sadistic serial killer who has been hiding in plain sight.

But after being lured into a deadly trap, they must outwit a predator before becoming his next victims. Written by Margaret Cole (“The Past Is Never Buried,” 2026), the film also stars Dillon Peyerk (“Euphoria”), Kylie Delre (“Here’s the Thing”) and Ben VanderMey (“Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist”).

“Baylen Out Loud” - Season 2

With her new apartment and a wedding to plan, Baylen’s just getting started as Season 2 of “Baylen Out Loud” premieres Saturday, June 27, on Hulu. This new season continues to follow Baylen Dupree (“Dr. Phil”), a young woman living with an extreme case of Tourette syndrome. As Baylen works toward becoming more independent, she begins relying less on her family while taking bigger steps out into the world on her own. “Avatar: Fire and Ash” (2025)

Return to the breathtaking world of Pandora when “Avatar: Fire and Ash” begins streaming Wednesday, June 24, on Disney+. This third chapter follows Marine-turned-Na’vi leader Jake Sully (Sam Worthington, “Clash of the Titans,” 2010) as he and his wife, Neytiri (Zoe Saldana, “Guardians of the Galaxy,” 2014), grieve the death of their eldest son, Neteyam (James Flatters, “Black Dog,” 2023), after he was shot and killed by Lyle Wainfleet (Matt Gerald, “Yellowstone”) in 2022’s “Avatar: The Way of Water.” Now, “Fire and Ash” follows the Sullys as they set out to prevent another death from occurring, this time aided by the Wind Traders. “The Agency” - Season 2

The highly anticipated sophomore season of “The Agency” premieres Sunday, June 21, on Paramount+, with all 10 episodes dropping at once. Michael Fassbender (“X-Men: First Class,” 2011) returns as Martian, a covert CIA agent caught between his hazardous undercover assignments and a dangerous international conspiracy. This season will continue following Martian as Samia (Jodie Turner-Smith, “Anne Boleyn”), his lover, is held captive in Sudan. Martian will do anything to try to save her — even things past the point of treachery. “The only way out is deeper in, which is a knife-edge Martian must walk if he is to save love, life and his mission” (per Deadline). Q: Will “Murder in a Small Town” be coming back? If so, when?

A: I have half a glass of water for you, and you can decide if it’s half-full or half-empty: “Murder in a Small Town” has been renewed for a third season, but it’s been delayed until the winter (likely January).

The first two seasons of the mystery drama aired as part of Fox’s fall schedule, but the network announced last month that it was moving it to the midseason schedule for Season 3.

They made that decision in order to turn fall Tuesdays into a “night of medical marvels,” according to Fox executive vice-president Dan Harrison.

Last season, “Murder in a Small Town” served as lead-in to the medical drama “Doc.” This fall it will be replaced in the slot by “Best Medicine,” a freshman hit that aired midseason last year.

To be fair to Fox’s programmers, perhaps the dead of winter is a better place for “Murder in a Small Town, which another Fox executive vicepresident, Brooke Bowman, called “cozy and delightful” in her renewal statement.

One other piece of unequivocally good news: the show has added TV vet Peter Gallagher (“The O.C.”) to its cast for Season 3. He’ll play a charismatic man who sails into the marina of Gibsons, British Columbia, Canada, and disrupts the lives of everyone in town before (presumably, based on Gallagher’s contract) sailing away again.

This seems to be part of an ongoing strategy for the show: to bring in a different, beloved TV

face for a season-long arc each year as it did with Marcia Gay Harden (“How to Get Away With Murder”) in Season 2.

Q: Is Vince Vaughn coming back with more “Bad Monkey”?

A: Vince Vaughn (“The Break-Up,” 2006) is on board for a lot more “Bad Monkey,” if it’s up to him.

Season 1 of the Apple TV series was based on the novel of the same name by Carl Hiaasen (“Striptease,” 1996). It was a hit, and has been renewed for a second. The assumption was that Season 2 would be based on the followup book, “Razor Girl.”

However, in an interview with Deadline.com, Vaughn said that wouldn’t be the case. But don’t fret. Instead, Season 2 will tell an “interim” story,

set in the time between the two novels, saving “Razor Girl” for Season 3.

“That would be the plan,” he said. However, it’s not totally his decision. It’s more up to the show’s creative mind — creator and writer Bill Lawrence (“Scrubs”). The problem there is that Lawrence is one of the busiest people in TV at the moment.

At the same time he’s making “Bad Monkey,” Lawrence is also doing new seasons of a pair of other Apple TV hits, “Ted Lasso” and “Shrinking,” as well as his HBO show “Rooster” and the reboot of “Scrubs” on ABC.

So the timeline of future “Bad Monkey” seasons could depend on finding space in his packed schedule.

But Season 2, at least, is a lock.

Vaughn said (in the same Deadline interview, back in March) that principal filming was finished. There’s no release date set yet, but the rumored target is “late 2026.”

Q: What’s going on with the guy who played Hawk in “Spenser Confidential”? That movie didn’t get enough love.

A: Whether 2020’s “Spenser Confidential” got the attention it deserved, Winston Duke (“Us” 2019) is doing all right for himself. In fact, “Spenser” was squeezed into his schedule between a string of enormous hits.

Two years before he took on the role of Hawk — a friend, assistant and hired-muscle to private detective Spenser (played by Mark Wahlberg,

“The Fighter,” 2010) — Duke became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However big a hit “Spenser” became (and it’s not clear how successful it was because Netflix doesn’t always share these things), it was never going to be as big as an Avengers movie.

In 2018’s “Black Panther,” Duke plays M’Baku, a rival-turned-ally of the titular superhero Black Panther (played by Chadwick Boseman, “Get On Up,” 2014). Duke has reprised the role three times so far, and will do so again in “Avengers: Doomsday” later this year.

In between all this, he also had a role in 2024’s “The Fall Guy,” the cinematic reboot of the ‘80s action-comedy series. It grossed nearly $200 million in theaters.

Among all this, Duke is currently working on “Slime,” a kid-focused animated feature about a young woman (Willow Smith, “I Am Legend,” 2007) who is injected with alien DNA — “slime,” in the film’s parlance — and gains special powers.

Unfortunately for fans, one thing not on Duke’s schedule is another Spenser movie. The 2020 film seemed to be intended to launch a franchise — based as it was on a long-running book series by Robert B. Parker — but that clearly didn’t pan out.
