A supe-r ending

When several of Homelander’s (Antony Starr, “Outrageous Fortune”) desenters are locked in Freedom Camps, Butcher (Karl Urban, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” 2003) and team intervene to change the world in the fifth and final season of “The Boys,” premiering with a two-episode drop Wednesday, April 8, on Prime Video. Subsequent episodes will air weekly until the series finale Wednesday, May 30. Jack Quaid (“Companion,” 2025) also stars.

JBye-bye, ‘Boys’ Prime Video superheroes bid farewell in Season 5

ust as there comes a time when we all need a hero, there also comes a time when our heroes must bid us adieu. After seven years and what will be 40 episodes throughout its run, Prime Video’s “The Boys” is going out with a bang.

Join the action when the fifth and final season of “The Boys” premieres with a two-episode drop Wednesday, April 8, on Prime Video. Subsequent episodes will air weekly until the series finale Wednesday, May 30.

According to the official description offered by Prime, “’The Boys’ is an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as gods, abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about ‘The Seven’ and their formidable Vought backing.”

At its core, “The Boys” is a vigilante story that tackles themes of corporate greed, misplaced power and the weaponization of human beings, while posing the question of where one’s civic responsibility begins and ends in the face of largescale corruption. Headed toward its culmination point, the action series — which is also not without its share of comedic moments — gets darker as Homelander (Antony Starr, “Outrageous Fortune”) controls America through fascist terror, imprisoning dissenters in Freedom Camps.

“It’s Homelander’s world, completely subject to his erratic, egomaniacal whims,” reads the Season 5 description on Prime’s press site.

“Hughie [Jack Quaid, “Companion,” 2025], Mother’s Milk [Laz Alonso, “My Dad the Bounty Hunter”] and Frenchie [Tomer Capone, “Fauda”] are imprisoned in a Freedom Camp. Annie [Erin Moriarty, “Jessica Jones”] struggles to mount a resistance against the overwhelming Supe force. Kimiko [Karen Fukuhara, “The Boy and the Heron,” 2023] is nowhere to be found.

“But when Butcher [Karl Urban, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” 2003] reappears, ready and willing to use a virus that will wipe all Supes off the map,” the description continues, “he sets in motion a chain of events that will forever change the world and everyone in it.”

Homelander has been the villain throughout the entire series thus far, but online discussion per ComicBook.com suggests that perhaps things aren’t all they appear to be as the series comes to a close, especially when considering how closely the television adaptation has kept to the comic book storyline.

Without sharing the potential spoilers discussed in the ComicBook.com article (curious individuals can seek out Clay Pitman’s March 15

piece online), it remains entirely likely that a more diabolical villain than even Homelander could materialize during these last eight episodes.

“One popular ‘The Boys’ Season 5 theory is that the show will do a fairly accurate adaptation of the comic book series’ ending,” reads Pitman’s piece. “In the comics, [one of their own] becomes the main villain of the show.

“Although ‘The Boys’ has been building up to a final confrontation with Homelander this entire time, this theory states that it will pull the rug out from under fans by switching things up [from the expected] and [conclude] with a final confrontation with [redacted].”

Regardless of the direction writers go with the series’ ending, there is always the possibility that the story will continue by way of a prequel series, sequel series, spinoff or film franchise; indeed, the Supes-in-training series “Gen V” is awaiting Season 3 confirmation at Prime Video and a brandnew production is “confirmed to be in development,” per Collider.com.

Collider has also reported that a new project

has been announced and is expected to release before Season 5 hits the streamer. (If all goes according to plan, that timeline means that the project is already out.)

“Arvore Immersive has teamed up with ‘The Boys’ for a new VR game, titled The Boys: Trigger Warning, which will be released on March 26,” reads the March 11 Collider piece. “The series follows Lucas, a new hero in The Boys universe, who is pulled into a violent fight with Vought while working alongside Butcher and Mother’s Milk.”

In addition to the returning main cast, the final season of “The Boys” includes “Supernatural” stars Jensen Ackles (returning as Soldier Boy), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (returning as Joe Kessler), Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins, alongside “Breaking Bad’s” Giancarlo Esposito (returning as Stan Edgar) and series newcomer Daveed Diggs (“Hamilton,” 2020).

“It’s been an incredible [expletive] journey, best job of my life,” wrote showrunner and producer Eric Kripke (“Supernatural”) in a post on Instagram, adding that “the best part of filmmak-

ing isn’t the film, it’s the making. ... Solving problems together and laughing a lot. I’ll miss the show, but far more, I’ll miss the people I made the show with.

“You guys have my love and gratitude forever,” Kripke concluded. “[I] can’t wait for everyone to see what we cooked up.”

Kripke returns to helm the series, which is based on the comics of the same name by Garth Ennis (“Constantine,” 2005) and Darick Robertson (“Gen V”), who also serve as executive producers alongside Seth Rogen (“The Studio”), Evan Goldberg (“Superbad,” 2007) and James Weaver (“This Is the End,” 2013), to name a few of many.

New world war A British perspective on American independence

What is now the United States of America was once the Thirteen Colonies, a group of settlements along the coast of the Atlantic that fought and won independence from British rule in 1776. The story of the battle for liberty fought on American soil has been told many times, but in “Lucy Worsley Investigates: The American Revolution,” the treasured British historian (“Agatha Christie: Lucy Worsley on the Mystery Queen”) looks at the time with a wider scope from across the pond and asks whether things could have been different.

The two-part investigative special premieres Tuesday, April 7, on PBS, part of the PBS America @ 250, a schedule of programming highlighting the history and art that define the nation to celebrate the country’s semiquincentennial year. An examination of the violent founding of America is essential during a time when political tensions are high, both internationally and at home.

Worsley, whose previous subjects in the “Lucy Worsley Investigates” series include the Black Death, Jack the Ripper and Bloody Mary, has flipped the conventional perspective for the latest installment.

“Digging into the past is a true joy for me, so often history gets written by the winners. Lots of people know the U.S. side of the American Revolution, but much fewer the British one,” Worsley said, per PBS.

The author and curator continued: “Interrogating amazing sources and meeting people who can shine a light on this hidden history, I can’t wait to share the forgotten and surprising story of how losing America affected Britain and beyond.”

To kick off the inquiry, Worsley travels to New York’s City Hall Park, where George Washington’s troops heard the Declaration of Independence read aloud in July 1776, just days after it was approved by Congress and then quickly published and distributed among the colonies on broadsheet and by orators. Inspired by the call for freedom, rebels took aim at representations of British authority — a statue of King George III in New York City was repatriated into musket balls.

Worsley visits Boston to examine how events such as the Boston Massacre, where British troops killed five colonists, and the Boston Tea Party, a demonstration against Britain’s punitive taxes, contributed to the eventual American Revolution.

Building friction between Britain and America was exacerbated by the Stamp Act of 1765, which ordered all kinds of paper documents be produced only on official stamped paper from London, paid for in British currency — remittance for British troops stationed in the colonies. Wors-

ley looks at the tension caused by British taxes and their impact on rebels in the colony and those close to home.

The special’s first episode explores the words of two British-born revolutionaries who raised their voices in service of liberty, Founding Father Thomas Paine and politician John Wilkes. Back in Britain, Worsley examines King George’s maps and visits the London home of Founding Father, scientist and revolutionary publisher Benjamin Franklin.

In the second episode, airing Tuesday, April 14, Worsley examines the web of connected conflicts stemming from the Revolutionary War. France, Spain and Ireland all rallied behind America’s fight for independence, weakening the reach of the British empire.

To wrap up the special, Worsley takes the show to the site of the very first American embassy in London at Grosvenor Square. John Adams was on site to open the embassy there in 1785 when Britain had finally formally acknowledged the independence of the Thirteen Colonies, two years after the conclusion of the Revolutionary War.

“Lucy Worsley Investigates: The American Revolution” was made by BBC Studios Specialist Factual Production for BBC Two, iPlayer and PBS, and is executive produced by Amanda Lyon (“Tucci in Italy”). Lyon said in a statement from BBC: “I’m delighted to be working with Lucy again, to look at a moment in history which is seen in very different ways on different sides of the Atlantic. It feels like the ideal subject for ‘Lucy Worsley Investigates.’”

Also on the slate of PBS’s celebratory programming marking the 250th year of American independence is six-part documentary series “The American Revolution,” another in-depth, well-researched collection from Ken Burns (“Country Music”) that aired on the broadcaster late last year. That series is available to stream with PBS Passport now.

PBS America @ 250 is a multi-year project that extends beyond this year’s Fourth of July celebration of independence. From the two-part “Handwork: A Craft in America 250 Special” to the civics-themed special episodes of PBS Kids series

“Rosie’s Rules” and “Alma’s Way,” the network soldiers on, highlighting the milestone year in the country’s history while simultaneously losing support from the current administration.

With the release of 2026’s Hot List — featuring 11 impressive chefs — foodies can get to know the next generation of Gordon Ramsays and Guy Fieris, through series such as “Guy’s Grocery Games,” “MasterChef” and more.

“This year’s lineup features a bold mix of rising talent whose viral content is captivating fans across social platforms everywhere,” reads the Food Network press release. “Each honoree brings a unique culinary point of view and a passion for inspiring

food lovers. With a combined fan base of more than 90 million, these Hot Listers are making an impact far beyond the food they create — from fighting childhood hunger to uplifting audiences with inspiring messages, they are driving meaningful change for the better.”

One of those chefs, Alessandra Ciuffo, has dedicated her life to the art of cooking, with her first appearance on the Food Network occurring when she was only 12 years old. At 15, young Alessandra then went on to compete on “Guy’s Grocery Games,” where she became one of Food Network’s youngest winners. Alessandra’s episode of “Guy’s Grocery Games” — Season 10, Episode 3 — can be streamed on Discovery+, alongside the rest of the season.

The story of Gilead continues when the first season of “The Testaments” premieres Wednesday, April 8, on Hulu. Based on Margaret Atwood’s sequel to “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the series shifts the story forward to a new generation coming of age inside Gilead. At the center are two teenage girls whose

Both soon find themselves within the gilded yet brutal halls of Aunt Lydia’s (Ann Dowd, “The Handmaid’s Tale”) elite school for future wives. As their unlikely bond deepens, the girls begin to uncover the truth about the system that has shaped their lives — a discovery that threatens Gilead’s carefully controlled future. Written for television by “The Handmaid’s Tale” creator Bruce Miller, “The Testaments” stars Hattie Kragten (“The Snoopy Show”) as Constance, Zarrin Darnell-Martin (“Ginny & Georgia”) as Aunt Gabbana, Blessing Adedijo (“Humane,” 2024) as Zilla and Brad Alexander (“You”) as Garth.

Q: Has Leonardo DiCaprio ever been on “Saturday Night Live”?

A: I’ll answer your question exactly as you wrote it and say yes, silver-screen megastar Leonardo DiCaprio (“Inception,” 2010) has “been on” the landmark sketch show “Saturday Night Live.” But not in the way that might imply, because, at the same time, DiCaprio regularly features on lists of the (few) celebrities who’ve never hosted the show.

It was that longstanding absence that made his cameo appearance in 2014 such a thrilling surprise for fans.

His buddy Jonah Hill (“Moneyball,” 2013) was hosting in January 2014, just after getting an Oscar nomination for the movie they did together, “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013). During his monologue, DiCaprio jumped on stage and suddenly the two of them were recreating the famous scene at the bow of the boat from DiCaprio’s 1997 star-making hit “Titanic” (it made sense in context).

It was just a brief moment during the monologue, so DiCaprio didn’t get a credit or anything. That means it also didn’t break his streak of decades of stardom without ever hosting the show. That streak is certainly notable, but it’s actually not all that strange. While it does seem like everyone who’s anyone has hosted the show at some point, in fact those lists mentioned earlier are pretty lengthy. And they include some comedians you’d imagine would be natural choices — folks like Sacha Baron Cohen (“Borat,” 2006) and Whoopi Goldberg (“Ghost,” 1990).

The lists also include some more of the most celebrated actors of our time — such as Sandra Bullock (“The Proposal,” 2009) and Denzel Washington (“Training Day,” 2001).

Q: Where else can I see the actor who plays Cate Randa on “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”? She’s doing a great job on that show.

A: You aren’t the only one impressed by Anna Sawai’s (“F9: The Fast Saga,” 2021) work. She also has Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes (“1917,” 2019) in her fan club — he recently cast her in one of the central roles in his sprawling

quadrilogy of biopics about the members of The Beatles.

Sawai will play controversial art-scene icon Yoko Ono (“Isle of Dogs,” 2018), who married Beatles singer-songwriter John Lennon (played by “A Murder at the End of the World” star Harris Dickinson), turning the two into an early example of a celebrity power couple.

That’s the next big role in a pretty impressive run for Sawai. It includes her current role as thirdgeneration monster tracker Cate Randa on the Apple TV series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” which debuted its second season in February.

She landed that role on the heels of a couple of other hits. First, she starred in the Apple TV family drama “Pachinko” from 2022-24. But more notably, she starred in the first season of the multiaward-winning smash “Shogun” — and got a bunch of those awards herself, including the big one: the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

Prior to all that, her most notable role was much earlier — as Kiriko in the 2009 sleeper-hit action movie “Ninja Assassin.”

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she said that she’s managed to keep her head (so far) in the midst of all this success — partly because it all came pretty quickly.

“I knew that a lot was going to happen before things would calm down, so I wasn’t getting myself too excited about everything. I was just going to each event, doing all the interviews and trying to keep myself grounded. So I don’t know if [life] is that different.”

We’ll see if that changes once she’s appeared in the highly anticipated Beatles movies, due out in 2028.

Q: Is Mark Harmon going to come back for more “NCIS: Origins”?

A: It seems likely. There will definitely be more of the show, and Mark Harmon (“Freaky Friday,” 2003) is a critical part of it, one way or another. Harmon, who starred as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the original CBS hit “NCIS,” is an executive producer of “NCIS: Origins,” the prequel spinoff that chronicles his character’s younger years. He also narrates the new show as the older version of the Gibbs character; his younger self is played by Austin Stowell (“Bridge of Spies,” 2015).

We have no reason to believe that Harmon’s involvement will change for the show’s third season, which has already been greenlit, and will likely debut in the fall like the previous two.

It’s the only role on his plate right now — he’s still an executive producer on the original series but doesn’t have an on-screen presence. To be fair, Harmon has earned some downtime. He’s been a household name since his ‘80s heartthrob days, coming to fame on the TV classic “St. Elsewhere” and in films such as “Summer School” (1987) and “The Presidio” (1988).
