Your Weekly Guide to TV Entertainment March 8 - 14, 2026

Steve Carell (“The Office”) stars as Greg “Rooster” Russo, an author who accepts a job at the college where his daughter, Katie (Charly Clive, “The Lazarus Project”) works, in “Rooster,” premiering Sunday, March 8, on HBO and HBO Max. “Scrubs” alums Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses collaborate behind the screen once again, this time to bring the fictional Ludlow College to life. Danielle Deadwyler (“Till,” 2022), John C. McGinley (“Scrubs”) and Phil Dunster (“Ted Lasso”) co-star.

The nuances of father-daughter relationships are hardly uncharted territory, especially in film and television. Films such as “Commando” (1985), “Taken” (2008) and “One Battle After Another” (2025) are all powered by a father’s primal urge to protect his daughter from harm.
Meanwhile, television series such as “Full House” and “Veronica Mars” have captured the barrier felt by a father while raising a daughter without a feminine influence.
“Rooster” is the newest of these series, hailing from “Scrubs” and “Shrinking” creator Bill Lawrence and his producing partner Matt Tarses (“Bad Monkey”), both of whom have daughters of their own.
Premiering on HBO and HBO Max Sunday, March 8, “Rooster” centers around an esteemed author who has been offered a speaking engagement at the college where his daughter works, all while she is experiencing the worst (and most public) breakup of her life to date.
Steve Carell, star of the American comedy series “The Office” and, more recently, the Netflix miniseries “The Four Seasons,” stars as Greg Russo. Greg is the well-known author of a novel series led by a rough-and-tumble protagonist named Rooster, and he has been offered a speaking engagement at Ludlow College, a local liberal arts school. Although flattered to be asked on his own merits, Greg looks upon this opportunity more as a way of reconnecting with his adult daughter, Katie (Charly Clive, “The Lazarus Project”), a professor who recently became the talk of the campus when her marriage quite literally went up in flames.
After discovering that her husband Archie (Phil Dunster, “Ted Lasso”), a fellow professor at the college, was openly cheating on her with a grad student named Sunny (Lauren Tsai, “Legion”), Katie shows her pain and disapproval by burning down his faculty house. Additionally, as the college dean (played by John C. McGinley, “Scrubs”) reminds Greg in the official trailer, “she also assaulted a professor” (you guessed it: Archie). Needless to say, Katie is in quite a bit of trouble and at risk of losing her job. Enter Rooster. Greg offers to stay on as a guest lecturer for the college on the condition that Katie also be allowed to stay as she works through her anger, but what begins as a simple deal to save his daughter’s job becomes a tale of boundary-setting, personal reflection and light, comical role play. Frequently referred to as Rooster by his students, due to his physical

likeness to his main character on the book jacket, Greg decides to adopt some of his leading man’s more spontaneous traits to help smooth things over; it turns out he’ll get somewhat of a new lease on life in the process.
“The show itself is at least loosely based on the fact that Matt [Tarses], Steve [Carell] and I all have very tight relationships with our daughters who are young adults,” Lawrence said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “That relationship’s complicated because you want to protect them, when the truth is that you’re just kind of protecting yourself. We wanted to imagine what it would be like to drop a man-of-the-people author into his daughter’s claustrophobic life at a small liberal arts college in the East.”
One of the least expected outcomes of Greg’s journey at Ludlow is his friendship with poetry professor Dylan, played by “The Harder They Fall” (2021) and “Till” (2022) actress Danielle Deadwyler. Traditionally known
for her more dramatic roles, Deadwyler’s interest in comedy shines through in the most honest way in “Rooster.”
“That is an actor who can do anything,” Carell said of Deadwyler to THR. “She brings such a different energy to the show, a gravitas almost, while at the same time crushing every comedic moment she has. It’s pretty amazing.”
Other players in the 10-episode series include Connie Britton (“Nashville”), Annie Mumolo (“Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” 2021), Scott MacArthur (“The Mick”), Alan Ruck (“Succession”), Brenda Strong (“Desperate Housewives”) and Robby Hoffman (“Hacks”). Maximo Salas (“Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies”), Evan Jachelski (“Dave”), Xavier Beloved (“Boneyard,” 2024), Sophia Macy (“The Chair”), Jonah Beckett (“The Sex Lives of College Girls”) and Cece Abbey (“Wyrm,” 2017) star as Ludlow College students.
As for the show’s writing, fans of “Scrubs,”
“Shrinking” and “Ted Lasso” will likely already be convinced of its quality. For those who need a little more of a push, however, know that Carell told THR, “I read the script and it was one of the best comedy pilots I’ve read — period.”
For Lawrence and Tarses’ sake, we are hoping Carell is right, as, per Lawrence: “We’re all doing this about our relationship with our daughters — and so if it sucked, on some level it might mean I’m a bad dad.”
Head back to school (with your dad, maybe?) and learn the power of family ties when “Rooster” premieres Sunday, March 8, on HBO and HBO Max.

A second look
Virginia medical examiner returns to her post in ‘Scarpetta’
By Sarah Passingham TV Media
From the explosive boom of true crime podcasts and documentaries to the prevalence of cold case internet sleuths, it is safe to say that we all know that the suspect often returns to the scene of the crime. But what does it mean if the one returning is part of the investigation? Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman (“Nine Perfect Strangers”) stars in the new crime drama “Scarpetta,” premiering on Prime Video Wednesday, March 11.
Kidman portrays the titular Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a former Virginia medical examiner who returns to her post decades after her first appointment. From the official description of the series from Prime Video, “with skilled hands and an unnerving eye, this unrelenting medical examiner is determined to serve as the voice of the victims, unmask a serial killer and prove that her careermaking case from 28 years prior isn’t also her undoing.”
In the official trailer for the upcoming series, Kay recites the oath, becoming the medical examiner for Virginia once again, stating, “second time’s the charm.” During her first investigation in 1998, Kay used crime scene evidence and autopsies to tie several disturbing murders in the state to one serial killer. In present-day Virginia, what comes across Kay’s desk but another set of murders that not only seem to be the work of the same perpetrator, but also appear to hint at that first case.
“There are too many commonalities for them not to be connected,” Kay muses in the trailer. A web of connections tie the medical examiner looking to make something more of her second chance at the position with the perpetrators of the crimes she is tasked with investigating. The pursuit of justice puts the tireless examiner eyeto-eye with a serial murderer again to explore “the psychological complexities of both perpetrators and investigators,” per Prime Video.
“Scarpetta” also stars two recent best supporting actress Academy Award winners. Jamie Lee Curtis (“The Bear”) portrays Dorothy Scarpetta, Kay’s older sister, and Ariana DeBose (“Love Hurts,” 2025) is Dorothy’s tech-savvy daughter, Lucy Farinelli-Watson. Bobby Cannavale (“Blue Moon,” 2025) and Simon Baker (“The Narrow Road to the Deep North”) round out the main cast as former detective Pete Marino and FBI profiler Benton Wesley, respectively.
The series utilizes frequent flashbacks to Kay’s 1998 case, with young actors portraying the characters involved with the historic investigation. Rosy McEwen (“Apartment 7A,” 2024) is young Kay, Amanda Righetti (“Colony”) is young Dorothy, Jake Cannavale (“American Sports Story”) is young Pete and Hunter Parrish (“The Other Black Girl”) is young Benton.

Recurring cast includes Sosie Bacon (“Smile,” 2022) as reporter Abby Turnball; Charlie B. Foster (“The Garcias”) as Kay’s morgue assistant Wingo; Janet Montgomery (“New Amsterdam”) as Lucy’s wife, Janet; Stephanie Faracy (“Nobody Wants This”) as Kay’s assistant Maggie Cutbush; Georgia King (“Vice Principals”) as young Maggie; Mike Vogel (“Sex/Life”) as city attorney Bill Boltz; Tiya Sircar (“The Afterparty”) as police officer Blaise Fruge; Anna Diop (“Bosch”) as FBI cyber investigator Sierra “Tron” Patron; Anson Mount (“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”) as Matt Petersen; and Graham Phillips (“Riverdale”) as young Matt.
The new series is inspired by the popular “Scarpetta” crime novel series by author Patricia Cornwell, which in turn was inspired by a real-life investigator, former Virginia chief medical examiner Marcella Farinelli Fierro. The much-anticipated adaptation is safe on Prime Video for any fans worried about flighty series cancelations — two seasons of “Scarpetta” were promised when the series was announced by the streamer. Cornwell’s work has been adapted before for TV movies, but “Scarpetta” marks the first time her most famous protagonist has appeared on screen. Cornwell herself makes an appearance in the trailer at Scarpetta’s swearing in, wishing Kay good luck in her role.
The drama was developed by Liz Sarnoff, who last executive produced the very dark HBO comedy “Barry,” and serves as writer, executive producer and showrunner for “Scarpetta.” Kidman and Per Saari (“The Perfect Couple”) also executive produce, alongside Curtis and Jason Blum (“Black Phone 2,” 2025), Jeremy Gold (“The Sticky”), Chris Dickie (“The Bondsman”) and Chris McCumber (“Worst Roommate Ever”) for Blumhouse Television. The Emmy, James Beard and Critics Choice award-winning culinary competition series “Top Chef” returns for the premiere of its 23rd season Monday, March 9, on Bravo — kicking off a super-sized season full of 75-minute episodes.
Seeing the return of host Kristen Kish (“Fast Foodies”) and judges Tom Colicchio (“Tom Colicchio’s the Pantry”) and Gail Simmons (“Star Plates”), this upcoming season will introduce 15 brandnew “cheftestants,” including, according to Bravo, “life partners who co-own and operate a restaurant, as well as a pair of highly competitive identical twin brothers” — two firsts for the long-running series.
The chefs in question will be
competing in the diverse culinary hub of Charlotte, North Carolina, with plenty of excursions to Greenville, South Carolina, also planned throughout the season.
“This season will showcase the finest in southern hospitality, embracing the rich history, agriculture and outdoors, as a new batch of accomplished and renowned chefs vie for the ultimate ‘Top Chef’ title,” reads the announcement for Season 23.
“With the region’s freshest ingredients at their fingertips and high stakes on the line, the chefs will have to cook their best as they battle through Quickfire and Elimination challenges designed to put their skills, creativity and knowledge to the test.”
While cooking their way through the aforementioned challenges, the chefs will also

have the opportunity to earn advantages through immunity wins and cash prizes, with more than $150,000 up for grabs throughout the competition. When all is said and done, the winner of Season 23 will earn a $250,000 grand prize, a feature in Food & Wine magazine and an appearance at the annual Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado, alongside perks like hosting a dinner at the historic James Beard House and presenting at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards in Chicago.

“Virgin River” - Season 7
Love, change and new beginnings await when “Virgin River” premieres its seventh season Thursday, March 12, on Netflix. This season, Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge, “This Is Us”) and Jack’s (Martin Henderson, “Grey’s Anatomy”) relationship faces new paths forward as they grapple with what they want for their future. “There’s a lot more to go here with these characters,” showrunner Patrick Sean Smith (“Greek”) told Tudum following the couple’s longawaited wedding in the Season 6 finale. Season 7, according to Tudum, will “welcome a few new faces in the upcoming episodes, including characters who could shake up ‘Virgin River’ in a major way”; one of them being Victoria (Sara Canning, “The Vampire Diaries”), an investigator who’s been tasked with looking into Doc’s (Tim Matheson, “9-1-1: Nashville”) practice. Cody Kearsley (“Riverdale”) steps into the role of Clay, a drifter shaped by foster homes and a childhood torn in two. Separated from his younger sister many years ago, he’s been looking for her ever since — and still has hope that she’s out there somewhere. “One Tree Hill’s” Austin Nichols also joins the “Virgin River” cast this season as a figure from Mel’s past, while Annette O’Toole (“Smallville”), Colin Lawrence (“Riverdale”) and Benjamin Hollingsworth (“Code Black”) return to their roles. “Devil in Ohio’s” Ian Hay is among the show’s producers.
“Sesame Street” - Season 2
From toy swaps to cookie towers, “Sesame Street” returns in full swing as Season 2 premieres Monday, March 9, on Netflix. This season, a toy swap frustrates Elmo (Ryan Dillon, “Little Children, Big Challenges”) when his old favorites are played with in ways he never imagined, reminding him that imagi-

nation has no rules — especially when Miley Cyrus (“Flowers”) drops by to join the fun. Across the street, Abby (Leslie Carrara-Rudolph, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” 2008) “beastie-sits” three musical dragons, but when she makes a bedtime routine mistake that awakens the dragons, she learns that magic works best with a helping hand and a lullaby. And later, a cookie-tower challenge tests Elmo’s patience when he accidentally knocks it down. Rounding out the voice cast are Eric Jacobson (“The Muppets,” 2011) as Bert and Grover, Peter Linz (“The Muppets,” 2011) as Ernie, David Rudman (“Donkey Hodie”) as Cookie Monster and Matt Vogel (“The Masked Singer”) as Big Bird. Sal Perez (“Mexico’s Got Talent”) and Kay Wilson Stallings (“Helpsters Help You”) serve as executive producers, with Halcyon Person (“Blaze and the Monster Machines”) as head writer and co-executive producer.
WHAT’S NEW ON HULU
“Sunny Nights” - Season 1
A chance at a new life turns into a desperate fight for survival when Season 1 of “Sunny Nights” premieres Wednesday, March 11, on Hulu. When American siblings Martin (Will Forte, “The Last Man

on Earth”) and Vicki (D’Arcy Carden, “The Good Place”) move to Sydney, they’re convinced their mobile spray-tan startup, Tansform, will make them rich. At first, the hustle feels harmless — pop-up appointments, flashy branding and big promises. But a run-in with the wrong people soon pulls them deep into the city’s criminal underworld, where easy money comes with dangerous strings attached. As debts mount and threats close in, the pair must figure out how to stay alive, out of prison and in the black. Alongside Forte and Carden, the ensemble cast includes Rachel House (“Moana,” 2016), Jessica De Gouw (“Underground”) and Ra Chapman (“White Fever”), with Chris Davis (“The Great”) executive producing the series.
“The Madison” - Season 1
The next drama set in the world shaped by “Yellowstone” — following “1883” and “1923” — is “The Madison,” which makes its Paramount+ debut Saturday, March 14. Starring Michelle Pfeiffer (“Hairspray,” 2007) and Kurt Russell (“Escape from New York,” 1981), this intimate series follows the Clyburn family, who leave New York City for the
Madison River valley in Montana after a life-altering tragedy, as shifting relationships and unresolved grief shape their new lives. From series creator Taylor Sheridan (“Yellowstone”), “The Madison” explores family bonds and human connection across generations. Also starring Patrick J. Adams (“Suits”) as Russell McIntosh, Matthew Fox (“Lost”) as Paul Clyburn, Beau Garrett (“Knight of Cups,” 2015) as Abigail Reese, Elle Chapman (“A Man Called Otto,” 2022) as Paige McIntosh and Amiah Miller (“War for the Planet of the Apes,” 2017) as Bridgette Reese, Season 1 is directed by Christina Alexandra Voros (“Yellowstone”) and executive produced by Sheridan, David C. Glasser (“1883”) and John Linson (“Yellowstone”).
“Wild Rose” - Season 1
Secrets, lies and deadly double lives collide when Season 1 of “Wild Rose” premieres Thursday, March 12, on ALLBLK. The eight-episode series follows Roosevelt (played by singer, songwriter, author and actor Omarion, “The 40 Year Old Virgin,” 2005) — also known as “Rose” — a hitman raised in a family of assassins operating under the cover of a charitable non-profit, but behind the organization’s facade is an elite agency known for taking down high-profile targets. Trained from childhood to follow orders without question, Rose’s world is shattered when his wife and daughter mysteriously vanish. As a man who trusts no one, he suspects foul play and begins uncovering secrets that challenge everything he thought he knew about his family — and himself. Meanwhile, a high-stakes assignment places him close to a famous singer marked for death, drawing him into a dangerous web of fame, power and betrayal. Also starring Vanessa Williams (“Murder One”), Casey Gardner (“The Missing,” 2022) and Keraun Harris (“Black-ish”), the series is executive produced by Omarion alongside creator Deji LaRay (“Bosch”), with Dale S. Lewis (“Johnson”) and Erik White (“Tales”) directing.

Q: What happened to “S.W.A.T.”? Will it be back?
A: CBS canceled “S.W.A.T.” after its eighth season, which finished airing back in May. Unfortunately, this time the network seems to mean it.
You may remember that it canceled the series twice before only to cave to fan pressure and bring it back. But not this time.
A number of the central stars — most notably lead Shemar Moore (“Criminal Minds”) — have moved on. But the good news is, what they’ve moved on to is a spinoff called “S.W.A.T. Exiles,” in which Moore’s character, Hondo, is put in charge of a team of new recruits.
Hondo will be joined on the show by old “S.W.A.T.” pals Victor Tan (played by David Lim, “Quantico”), Deacon Kay (Jay Harrington, “Better Off Ted”) and Bob Hicks (Patrick St. Esprit, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” 2013).
Unfortunately, even though a whole first season of “S.W.A.T.: Exiles” has already been filmed, the show doesn’t have a broadcaster yet. Producers are reportedly shopping it around now.
But that’s not as worrying as it might sound. Pundits are comparing it to “Heated Rivalry” and “The Hunting Wives,” a couple of recent mega-hits that had full seasons in the can before finding their homes on HBO Max and Netflix, respectively (though in “Heated Rivalry’s” case, it already had a platform in Canada on the streaming service Crave).
Q: What’s next for Diego Calva? More “Night Manager”?
A: More “Night Manager” is unlikely (though not impossible), but Diego Calva (“Babylon,” 2022) can console himself with the knowledge that his next part will be one of the most enviable roles imaginable, as he will be acting along with one of our greatest living stars.
Calva will appear as Bolivian revolutionary Che Guevara, a divisive historical figure who has nonetheless become an icon (literally — a stylized version of his face graces T-shirts around the world), in the upcoming historical drama “Killing Castro.”
It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last summer and is now awaiting distribution. But given that it also stars Hollywood legend Al Pacino (“Serpico,” 1973), it shouldn’t have

much trouble finding its way to your screen.
Calva himself carries some star power of his own now, after his hit role in the second season of BBC/Amazon Prime Video drama “The Night Manager,” which released earlier this year. He played mysterious, compelling Colombian arms dealer Teddy Dos Santos, who goes up against lead character Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston, “The Avengers,” 2012).
Spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen the season finale: things don’t end well for his character, but Calva is fine with that. “I think Teddy’s journey should end the way it ends because Teddy is the soul of this season,” he told The Hollywood Reporter after the season finale. “And if we kept him alive, the season and the journey of all the other characters will lose strength.”
He says “I think” because there’s always a
new American movie “Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.” Is he going to do more stuff over here?
A: A full American transition isn’t really the plan for England-born comedian Asim Chaudhry, who came to fame on the British sitcom “People Just Do Nothing” that he created and starred in. But these days, it might not be necessary.
Indeed, his new movie — “Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die,” which released in February — was actually a U.S.-Germany co-production, and one of its other chief stars, Juno Temple (“Ted Lasso”), is also from England.
So it’s hard to say if Chaudhry’s next project, “The Siege,” will fit your criteria.
It promises to be a big, splashy action drama — the true story of a hostage crisis at the Iranian embassy in London. That all sounds very English,

NBC broadcast network. But it seems likely to
