The world’s best athletes head to Italy for the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games. As is tradition, the Winter Olympic Games begin with the opening ceremony, which airs Friday, Feb. 6, on NBC and streams on Peacock. Featuring a tribute to late Milanese designer Giorgio Armani, who collaborated with the Olympic committee for this year’s Italian uniforms, the opening ceremony showcases the musical talents of Italian singer-songwriter Laura Pausini and glitzy American icon Mariah Carey.

Afour-year wait can feel like a lifetime when something anticipated is on the horizon. For Winter Olympics spectators, the wait is over. For the athletes, however, the anticipation has only just begun. After four years of mental preparation and a lifetime of physical training and conditioning, Olympians from around the world gather in Milan, Italy, to kick off the 25th quadrennial Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Don’t miss the opening ceremony for the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games when it airs Friday, Feb. 6, on NBC. The ceremony — and the several sporting events that follow — can also be streamed on Peacock.

Seventy years after Italy’s Cortina d’Ampezzo held the seventh iteration of the Winter Olympics, a new set of contenders arrives to seek athletic success. But, as always, before (most of) the games begin, there must be a welcoming celebration.

This year’s opening ceremony is held inside Milan’s San Siro Stadium, which is also known as the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium after the 1930s and ‘40s-era Italian footballer who became a manager in 1946 and throughout the ‘50s. The stadium boasts 75,817 seats, making it “the largest capacity stadium in Italy” (per sansirostadium.com) and the perfect venue for the inaugural event.

The Feb. 6 opening ceremony continues its proud introductory tradition, which first began in Athens during the 1896 Olympic Games. Likewise, the procession of athletes — which first occurred in 1908 — will once again introduce spectators to the approximately 2,900 hopeful contenders representing 90 countries across 116 different events.

“The parade of delegations and the lighting of the Olympic cauldron will remain the highlights,” reads the description of the opening ceremony on Olympics.com, “complemented by new initiatives promoting inclusivity and participation across the competition venues.”

While athletes and spectators generally gather for the love of sport and support of their country, the 2026 Milano Cortina opening ceremony crew, led by the event management team at Balich Wonder Studio, has announced that their goal extends beyond simple support for friendly nation-based competition: “The aim is clear: to take the Olympic spirit beyond the stadium, engaging the public, athletes and communities in this major celebration.”

To help with this goal, Balich Wonder has called in the big guns and asked R&B/pop icon Mariah Carey (“Emotions”) to perform at the opening ceremony, which has been subtitled “Ar-

monia” (meaning “Harmony,” in Italian). Fresh off her Dec. 31 performance for “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” in New York and her Nov. 28 “Christmastime in Las Vegas” show at the Park MGM Grand, Carey continues to promote celebration of all kinds through her masterful vocals, glittery style and uplifting energy.

“Mariah Carey fully represents the emotional atmosphere that accompanies the run-up to the Games,” the Olympic committee wrote in a statement. “Music is a universal language that attracts different stories and sensibilities, and intertwines with the opening ceremony’s theme of harmony.”

Italian singer-songwriter Laura Pausini (“En Cambio No”) is also set to perform during the opening ceremony, plus a tribute to late Milanese designer Giorgio Armani has also been announced.

Armani, who died Sept. 4, 2025, at 91, is affiliated with the Olympics not just because of the Games’ current ties to his home city of Milan, but also because the esteemed couturier designed the outfits that will be worn by Team Italy throughout the Winter Games. Armani also de-

signed the Italian Olympic uniforms for London 2012 and the Italian flag bearer outfit for Turin 2006.

Known for his timeless and tailored take on functional fashions, Armani’s legacy continues to be honored even after his death.

“I couldn’t imagine a more inspiring collaborative project, one that features the city that gave me so much,” Armani said of his Olympic project last May. “Working for and with Italian athletes is always a pleasure and a source of great pride.”

For this year’s Italian team uniforms, Armani sought out nature as an inspiration, stating, “I chose a single color, white, to suggest harmony with the snow-capped peaks.”

Stateside, NBCUniversal is your home for all things Olympics, with 82 commentators covering events spanning Feb. 6-22 across NBC, NBCSN, Peacock, USA Network, CNBC and NBCUniversal’s various digital platforms. Mike Tirico (“NBC Sunday Night Football”) leads the charge as host of NBC’s “Primetime in Milan,” while Rebecca Lowe (“Barclays Premier League on NBC”) hosts daytime programming on NBC and Peacock.

As is tradition, the network also welcomes former USA Olympians to provide commentary,

which this year includes (but is not limited to) figure skaters Tara Lipinski, Ashley Wagner, Adam Rippon and Scott Hamilton; snowboarders Shaun White and Todd Richards; skiers Picabo Street and Ted Ligety; curler Tyler George; speed skater Joey Cheek; and four-time U.S. medalist Angela Ruggiero.

All in all, Olympics event coordinators are proud to provide viewers and participants alike with “a collective embrace weaving together Italian spirit, innovation, emotion and performances by world-renowned artists.” Described as “a one-of-a-kind event designed to surprise, unite and leave an enduring memory for audiences across the globe,” the 2026 Milano Cortina opening ceremony is not one to be missed. Tune in to NBC Friday, Feb. 6, to get in on the action. You can also stream it live or later on Peacock.

‘Interwoven’ roots

New docuseries explores the connected histories of two American communities

Stitching new squares into the American quilt is an ongoing project for historians, making connections between communities’ stories that help tell the whole tale. A new docuseries, executive produced, written and hosted by “Finding Your Roots” host Henry Louis Gates, Jr., delves into the shared history of Black and Jewish Americans.

“Black and Jewish America: An Interwoven History” premieres the first of four episodes Tuesday, Feb. 3, on PBS. Check your local listings for your affiliate’s premiere date.

To explore the two groups’ shared experiences in America, Gates included perspectives from scholars, activists, religious leaders and writers.

Multi-hyphenate actor Billy Crystal (“Before”); Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, screenwriter and author Tony Kushner (“Angels in America,” 2021); playwright, professor and “Nurse Jackie” actress Anna Deavere Smith; civil rights activist and political analyst of “PoliticsNation” on MS NOW Al Sharpton; and writer David Remnick, who recently appeared in the Netflix documentary “The New Yorker at 100,” are all participants in the series.

Children of civil rights figures Rev. Ralph Abernathy, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, Rabbi Israel Dresner and more also appear in the docuseries, sharing the legacies left behind by their relatives’ work.

The realities of race in America have both united and divided Black and Jewish Americans throughout history. The two groups’ beginnings in the country are very different, but the social climate of the early 20th century created bonds between Black and Jewish Americans brought together by shared struggles.

Not only were long-lasting civic partnerships forged during that time, but art influenced by the creative bonds between them flourished, influencing artists for generations. Music and movies that shaped art forms were produced during this time, while activists from both groups fought for workers’ rights.

With World War II, these cultural and political bonds were deepened when reporting of the atrocities of the Holocaust made it to America. The two communities, both impacted by the consequences of hate, came together for what is now considered the “golden age” of their alliance during the civil rights era, when community leaders collaborated to dismantle Jim Crow segregation.

As history has surged forward, divisions between the borders of all kinds of communities calcified and Black and Jewish Americans each prioritized their own issues, fragmenting the once more unified alliance. “Black and Jewish America” is a hopeful exploration of the rich connected

Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. hosts “Black and Jewish America: An Interwoven History”

history of activism and art between the two groups of Americans that could still see another golden age.

Gates shared in a statement that “this is a deeply personal subject” for the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard University. “It’s connected to my own coming of age during the heroic days of the civil rights struggle and is an urgent response to the violent forces I’ve seen reawakened in our society over the last decade.”

The docuseries highlights the kinship, solidarity and shared ideals of justice that knit the two communities together in past moments of social upheaval in America. Gates further explained the objective of the series, saying, “By tracing the long arc of Black and Jewish history in America, I hope we can see each other more clearly, more honestly and find hope in our mutual stories of survival, resilience and solidarity. But this series is not only about the past. It is about us — and how, together, we can prevail over the forces of hatred that seek to divide us.”

The series is directed by Phil Bertelsen (“Who Killed Malcolm X?”), Sara Wolitzky (“Makers: Women Who Make America,” 2013) and Julia Marchesi (“Great Migrations: A People on the Move”). The directors collectively shared in a statement: “The Black-Jewish connection is complicated and was never inevitable. Our struggles overlap, but our experiences in America are distinct. And yet, the times these communities have come together, however imperfectly, produced defining art and civil rights gains in America. We are determined to tell the unvarnished story, in all its glory and messiness/complication.”

“Black and Jewish America” is a production of McGee Media and Inkwell Media, in association with WETA Washington, D.C. Dyllan McGee (“Frederick Douglass: In Five Speeches,” 2022) serves as executive producer. Directors Bertelsen and Wolitzky are co-executive producers, and Marchesi also serves as a producer.

Overflowing with sugar, spice and everything nice, “Is It Cake?” returns once again, with an all-new seasonal special — “Is It Cake? Valentines” — making its debut Wednesday, Feb. 4, on Netflix.

Mikey Day (“Saturday Night Live”) returns as the series’ charming host, this time inviting three couples — all masters of baking in their own right — to appear in the “Is It Cake?” kitchen, where they’ll take on a myriad of seasonal challenges. As always, the couples’ main goal will be to create cakes that are nearly indistinguishable from their real-life counterparts, replicating common, everyday items out of simple

ingredients like sugar, flour and eggs. This time around, however, the couples in question will be asked to emulate items commonly associated with Valentine’s Day, including heart-shaped chocolate boxes, flickering candles, romance novels, cherub statues and more — all seen in a brief trailer shared for the upcoming special.

Called a “special baking celebration packed with firsts” by Day himself, this return to “Is It Cake?” will also see the introduction of games designed specifically with the cultural holiday in mind, including a segment called “The Sweetheart Showdown.”

“With hearts pounding and money on the line,” a synopsis teases, “these couples are in for the sweetest date night of their lives!”

Additionally, for the first time in the series’ history, the special event will also feature games that the viewers can participate in from the comfort of their own homes. While details remain secret, excited fans can expect to hem and haw alongside judges as they try to decipher the show’s titular question: is it cake?

With time running out and public pressure mounting, Mickey and his team race to dismantle Sam’s final scam and expose the truth. Their pursuit pits them against the district attorney’s office, federal agents and unresolved shadows from Mickey’s past that threaten to undermine his defense. “The Lincoln Lawyer” is created for television by David E. Kelley (“The Practice”), with Neve Campbell (“Scream,” 1996), Becki Newton (“Ugly Betty”), Jazz Raycole (“Jericho”) and Angus Sampson (“Insidious,” 2010) starring this season.

“Rise of the 49ers”

From underdogs to icons, the San Francisco 49ers take the field again as “Rise of the 49ers” kicks off Sunday, Feb. 1, on AMC+ with its first two episodes. This four-part sports docuseries charts the 49ers’ meteoric rise during the franchise’s “Gold Rush” era from 1981 to 1995 — a 14-year stretch that delivered five Super Bowl titles and reshaped pro football, both on and off the field. Through rare NFL Films footage, including locker-room speeches and never-before-seen photos of head coach Bill Walsh, the series “chronicles the rise of the team from underdogs into pro football’s most glamorous franchise and offers a compelling look at the

personalities that helped shape the sport” (per AMC+). Featuring exclusive interviews with Joe Montana (“ESPN Speedworld”), Jerry Rice (“One Tree Hill”), Steve Young (“Beverly Hills, 90210”), Ronnie Lott (“Hawkeye,” 1988) and former owner Eddie DeBartolo, Jr. (“Blue Eyes,” 1996), along with Tom Brady (“Ted 2,” 2015) — a San Mateo, California, native and lifelong 49ers fan — “Rise of the 49ers” is directed by Ryan Kelly (“The Great Brady Heist,” 2020) and Nick Mascolo (“30 for 30: The Tuck Rule”).

“Relationship Goals” (2025)

Ambition and unresolved romance collide in a newsroom love story when 2025’s “Relationship Goals” premieres Wednesday, Feb. 4, on Prime Video. Leah Caldwell (Kelly Rowland, “About Time,” 2013) is a brilliant TV producer on the verge of making history as the first woman to run New York’s top morning show when her carefully built world is thrown off course by an unexpected rival: her ex-boyfriend Jarrett Roy (Clifford “Method Man” Smith, “Soul Plane,” 2004), who insists he’s a changed man after reading the New York Times bestseller “Relationship Goals.” Once lovers and now professional competitors, Leah and Jarrett grapple with old wounds and lingering chemistry while vying for the same position. Meanwhile, as Leah and her close friends explore the book for themselves, they begin to rediscover what they want from love and relationships. Directed by Linda Mendoza (“Scrubs”), “Relationship Goals” is written by Michael Elliot (“Like Mike,” 2002), with Rowland serving as the film’s executive producer.

“Finding Harmony: A King’s Vision”

A lifelong mission to reconnect humanity with nature comes to light when “Finding Harmony: A King’s Vision” premieres Friday, Feb. 6, on Prime Video. “Finding Harmony: A King’s Vision” is a landmark documentary that traces King Charles III’s decades-long commitment to the philosophy of “Harmony,” a belief that humans are part of nature rather than separate from it, and that this perspective is vital to safeguarding the planet’s future. Through stunning cinematography, personal reflections and unique interviews, the film explores the origins, evolution and scientific foundations of harmony, highlighting global environmental initiatives inspired by this vision — from sustainable communities to heritage conservation and regeneration projects at Dumfries House in Scotland and Highgrove Gardens in England. Narrated by Academy Award winner Kate Winslet (“Titanic,” 1997), the documentary is directed by Nicolas Brown (“Human Planet”) and produced by Passion Planet in collaboration with The King’s Foundation for Amazon MGM Studios.

Q: Stephen Colbert spoke in an interview about going to the Olympics with the speed skating team. Was he a skater?

A: Not even close. In fact, as is his way, he made that part of the joke.

Back in 2009, when he was still hosting his plucky Comedy Central show “The Colbert Report,” Stephen Colbert (“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”) and his rabid fan base sped in to rescue the U.S. Olympic speed skating team.

It had lost its sponsor, threatening the team’s ability to travel and compete in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Colbert heard about this (his show was focused on current events, so he seemingly heard about everything) and acted.

He signed a sponsorship agreement on screen and then turned his show into a fundraising event for the team, with multiple segments devoted to the sport.

One particularly hilarious extended bit involved the host swapping his dress shoes for real speed skates — first to learn how to skate and eventually to race U.S. Olympian Shani Davis.

Of course, Colbert’s on-ice ineptitude was part of the gag — he lost to Davis by more than 13 minutes — but his struggles to learn the sport seemed real.

Ultimately, his audience did manage to fill the team’s funding gap. And Colbert really did join the team in Vancouver — as an “assistant sports psychologist.”

The speed skating team went on to win four medals, no doubt thanks to Colbert’s psychological support (but especially to his fundraising).

Q: What’s the guy who played Mike been doing since “Better Call Saul”?

A: The fact that Jonathan Banks (“Gremlins,” 1984) hasn’t had another role as big as copturned-criminal Mike Ehrmantraut in “Breaking Bad” and its spinoff, “Better Call Saul,” goes without saying. Roles like that, which he played for 13 years until “Saul’s” end in 2022, come around once in a lifetime (if that) for most actors.

So instead, let’s say that his post-Mike career has been thriving but a little more quietly. He’s had two major roles in the three-plus years since then: the short-lived Apple TV sci-fi series “Constellation” in 2024 and, most recently, the Netflix miniseries “The Beast in Me.” He was a chief support in both. Unfortunately, neither one is likely to return — though there’s a sliver of hope for “The Beast in Me,” which, though billed as a miniseries was a big award-nominated hit. So it’s a mystery what his next project will be. He’s been trying to make a project of his own — a crime-drama called “The Damaged,” which he co-wrote with his longtime

friend and collaborator Conrad Goode (“Watercolor Postcards,” 2013) — for a few years now, but nothing’s come of that so far. But there will almost certainly be something. Banks’ performance in “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” equal parts chilling and endearing, was frequently cited as a highlight of both shows, so he’s certainly still in demand. And he’s earned the right to be a little choosy.
