Homeowners eagerly await the arrival of the warm weather so they can cast off the remnants of cabin fever and bask in the sunshine. However, as summer nears its dog days, the same sun homeowners once coveted can contribute to uncomfortable conditions in outdoor entertaining spaces. Meteorologists at WHAS11 in Kentucky took to their neighborhoods in July 2020 to test just how hot surfaces can get in the sun during peak daytime temperatures. Concrete sitting in the sun almost all day reached a temperature of 134.7 F, while the same concrete in the shade clocked in at just under 80 F. When air temperatures are around 90 F, unshaded concrete and asphalt can be 125 F and 140 F, respectively. While wood decking may not be as hot as asphalt and concrete, it still can get steamy underfoot. Homeowners who want to be able to enjoy their outdoor spaces in an array of temperatures can think about investing in shade solutions. Sun-blocking ideas like awnings, shade trees and large umbrellas can help people enjoy their yards all day long. Canopy: A patio canopy is typically a freestanding unit that can be installed over a patio or a deck. Some people prefer to bolt it down so it will not be knocked over in windy conditions. The fabric on the canopy can be removed during the offseason, helping to improve its longevity.

Umbrellas can be paired with patio tables, while stationary cantilever umbrellas sit out of the way on their own heavyduty stands. A cantilever umbrella tends to provide more shade than patio table umbrellas. Curtains: Homeowners can block sunlight outdoors the way they do inside, offers MSN. In 1983, my husband and I moved from Aurora to Yorkville. This community was everything we hoped for when deciding where we were going to raise our four children. Over the years, I have gained knowledge and insight of the Yorkville community and surrounding areas. For almost 20 years, I was a stay-at-home mom. During this time, I taught exercise classes at the Plano YMCA and volunteered in my children’s classrooms. I have served on YMCA gymnastics boosters and PTO boards. Working with skilled and experienced contractors can ensure projects go smoothly and are completed promptly. Timing is a big consideration for homeowners as they begin renovating their homes, and the home improvement experts at HomeAdvisor note that the following are some general timelines for popular renovation projects. Home addition Short of a full-scale demolition and rebuild, home additions are the most time-consuming projects homeowners can undertake. HomeAdvisor notes that its survey of customers who recently completed home addition projects reported that the average time from start to finish was between three and four months. Certain variables, including the scale of the project and the local permits process, can extend the time it takes to complete a home addition. Kitchen remodel Scale is a big factor to consider when estimating the time it takes to complete various home improvement projects, and kitchen remodels are no exception. Some HomeAdvisor users reported projects taking as long as four months, though the average time reported was roughly six weeks. Projects that require major overhauls like rearranging the plumbing and moving walls will likely take longer than more cosmetic projects that are

limited to replacing cabinets and countertops. Bathroom remodel More than 1,000 homeowners surveyed by HomeAdvisor reported that bathroom remodels took about 4.5 weeks from start to finish. Replacement windows Homeowners who want to replace all the windows in their home can expect such a project to take roughly three weeks. HomeAdvisor notes that such a timeline need not concern homeowners worried that they will be forced to brave the elements during the length of the project. Much of a contractors’ time during a window replacement project will be spent on upfront measuring and then ensuring a tight fit once the windows have been installed.

What is a ‘Landscape Designer’ and why do I need one? By Meagan Provencher, ICN Landscape design is a very personal process. Good landscaper designers take the time to walk through your yard, discuss your needs, and then translate those needs into a workable design. Many people start a yard project and then get overwhelmed and give up. A design can organize thoughts and ideas and can be worked on at any pace – helping to avoid frustration. The ideas and suggestions put forth by good designers are original and unique, much like art. Many years of education and experience, coupled with a passion for plants, show through in good design. These original ideas are also why most companies charge a fee for a landscape design plan. Make sure you do your research. Find out warranty and replacement policies. What kind of education does the designer have? Will the designer be available for questions throughout the process? Make a list of questions and concerns ahead of time so you can be informed and comfortable with hiring a designer. A Budget??? The budget for a landscape can be widely varied. Yards are like snowflakes – no two are the same. Therefore, what your neighbor may have spent on their landscape will be not at all similar to what you may spend. Having a realistic budget is important to achieving success in your garden. Don’t expect ‘big box’ discount prices on high quality plant material. It makes a huge difference to install plant material that is originally grown in the Midwest and therefore, those prices may be higher. You can also save by installing some plant material yourselves. You can also install your landscape in phases.

Also, remember that the cost of a landscape usually includes plant warranties and carries the added bonus of being able to contact the sales staff and designer as often as necessary. What’s in a Landscape Design? A landscape plan usually consists of a larger portion of your yard like the front or back of the house, a major restructuring of older, existing plants, or starting from scratch with a new house. The process is somewhat involved, with site visits, client interviews, and measuring. The yard is addressed as a whole so the design flows from front to back and keeps the needs of the homeowner in focus. A designer will then take all the information garnered from a site visit and start the design process. Scaled drawings are rendered showing labeled plants in context to your yard, estimates are generated, and a visit by you to the garden center is involved to see the plan and actual plants that were drawn in the plan. It’s important that you can see the plant material that will be placed in your yard. You wouldn’t by a car without test-driving it first, why buy a tree that you can’t touch and see before it ends up permanently in your yard. Often, you can use this landscape plan over several years and complete your landscape on your timetable. Fees vary for landscape designs but in the long run, those fees are worth it to have a comprehensive plan that suits your needs and helps you enjoy your gardens. Though new flooring and ceiling tiles might not offer the wow factor of a remodeled kitchen, a 2019 study from researchers at the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University found that replacing floors and ceilings was the most popular home improvement project in the United States in 2017, the most recent year for which data was available at the time of the study. More than five million homeowners replaced carpeting, flooring, paneling, or ceiling tiles in their homes in 2017. The popularity of such projects may have something to do with the relatively low cost associated with them, as the experts at BobVila.com note that overhauling surfaces underfoot and overhead costs an average of $3,283. That places floor and ceiling tile replacement projects among the least expensive home improvement projects homeowners can undertake, even though such renovations can immediately and dramatically transform the look of a room.
