Everyone will feel the love this February with a variety of St. Charles Park District programs to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Whether it’s making crafts at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, date night at Primrose Farm or training to become frog monitors, all ages are sure to find a way to spend quality time with their loved ones.
CHILDREN AND FAMILIES
Together with children, attend the Love the Earth Wild Wednesdays February series at Hickory Knolls. From 9:30-10:15 a.m. witness a child’s imagination ignite as you build crafts from recycled materials together; meet and pet animals; and participate in other interactive activities. Or share your love for animals the week of Valentine’s Day with a lineup of educational critter visits also at Hickory Knolls. During Animals Love Valentines from 10:30-11:30am Tuesday, Feb. 12, through Friday, Feb. 15, staff will introduce children to a different critter each day including the turtles, snakes, bunnies and bugs that call Hickory Knolls home.

Looking for a kid-free Valentine’s Day date? The park district has you covered. From 5-9:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, Hickory Knolls will transform into a campsite for the Valentine’s Evening Camp for children ages 6-12. It will be just like any other day at the Underground, hanging out, playing games, eating pizza and watching movies.

Love will be in the air during frog mating season later this month, and that’s where you come in. Don’t worry, kissing frogs is not required, but learning to identify different species and listening for various mating calls is the purpose of frog monitor training from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Feb. 16, at Hickory Knolls. All ages are welcome and experts even will engage children in frog calling and other froggy activities. Wellequipped with frog knowledge, your data will help guide the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in regional conservation planning and local land management. takes fresh look at kitchen workhorse By TOM WITOM
“S
killet” (Hardie Grant) provides an eye opener for home cooks short on time but keen to whip up noteworthy family meals. In her latest volume, author, editor and food stylist Anna Helm Baxter presents a memorable collection of more than 70 quick, easy and flavorful one-pan recipes. The recipes are designed for cast iron or clad stainless-steel.
A good example of her approach is Chicken and Mushroom Pot Pie (see accompanying recipe). “Skillet” is divided into chapters that include Vegetarian, Fish and Seafood, Meat and Chicken, Pasta and Sweets. Among subjects addressed are burgers, curries, pizza, risotto, pasta and desserts. Baxter trained at London’s Leiths School of Food and Wine. Her
previous books are “Soups” and “10-Minute Desserts.” Beatriz Da Costa’s food photos entice at every turn of the page.

CHICKEN AND MUSHROOM POT PIE (SERVES 4) • 2 Tablespoons olive oil
• 1/2 cup white wine
• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
• 1 rotisserie chicken, skin and bones discarded, meat shredded (about 9 ounces)
• 2 leeks, white and green parts • 7 ounces Chestnut mushrooms, sliced *
• 12 fluid ounces, chicken stock
• 1 rounded tablespoon allpurpose flour
• 8 ounces pre-rolled shortcrust pastry round
• 2 ounces heavy cream
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Heat a large skillet over medium hear, add the oil and cook the leeks and mushrooms until softened. Sprinkle over the flour and stir to coat. Add the wine and cook until almost fully absorbed. Fold in the chicken, then add the stock and cream. Simmer for one minute, then remove from the heat. Unroll the pastry, place it on top and cut a small slit in the middle. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden.
* Substitutes: Cremini or Portobello mushrooms, although any flavorful brown mushroom would probably be an acceptable substitute.

There are few gifts more traditionally romantic than chocolates and wine (except maybe flowers.) But pairing chocolate and wine can make the experience all the more exquisite.

So we asked a local expert Holly at Sav-Way Fine Wines and Spirits in downtown Geneva, to offer suggestions on clever combinations of these two deliciously decadent treats. Here’s what we found out: Big, rich creamy reds, like ports and sherry, work best with dark chocolate, as the smoothness and the already existing chocolate notes round out the flavor of a chocolate that than be a little bit bitter. Moscato, whether asti or not, pairs well with dark chocolate as well, as it is sweet and light. It also pairs well with fruit.

It’s a new year and so many of us are trying to eat healthier. But in the Tri-Cities, where great dining is around every corner, temptation can be brutal. Don’t dismay! There are plenty of healthy choices on the menus of our favorite restaurants, if you know where to look.

This month, I stopped in at Craft Urban in Geneva. What a cool name! The food is quite nutritious and vibe is alive. I put together a lunch of the “ricotta bread and spread.” This dish hits on the salty and protein with the prosciutto, the vitamins with the greens, the hazelnuts with some protein, and, of course, the sweet kick, with the peaches. Just don’t over do the bread. I often ask for, or double up on the toppings per bread to cut those carbs. The next dish is the “charred carrots with the pesto and ricotta.” It’s a beautiful plate bursting with flavor. I had to ask for seconds. For a salad, I hit the roasted beet version, which has baby kale, citrus, quinoa and yogurt. I mean, healthy! To finish up, I ate the “crisp chicken sammich”, but decided to divide it in half
(thus the carbs went down by half as well, with the bun being gone. ) Nowadays fat and protein are in and often create better balance on those blood tests and on the hips! The service at Craft Urban was wonderful, but the creative flavor profiles of what might be considered common items is what kicks up this meal.

The BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene have significant lifetime increased risk of ovarian cancer up to 60 percent (per Australian Government newsletter) and breast cancer around 80 percent. I would recommend you get genetic testing for the genes. If they are positive, this is certainly an option for you, though there are other strategies as well, which include careful and increased interval screening with mammograms.
Q: Colon cancer does
not run in my family. When should I start screening?
A: You should start screening
at age 45. This is for all men and women. If you have symptoms that make you concerned to get evaluated earlier, then come earlier to the gastroenterologist. It is better to prevent than to deal with the consequence.
Q: I have abdominal
cramps fequently. What do you think I should do?
A: Regularly occurring
abdominal cramps are many times a sign that some other problem is lurking. This may range from a colitis (inflammation of the colon), to distension or inflammation of an organ in the abdomen (liver, pancreas, small intestine, stomach). It may also relate to the kidneys or bladder. At times, there are non inflammatory conditions that can cause the cramps like IBS. I recommend to come in to get evaluated to help

It would be wise to present to gastroenterologist for evaluation of that, which may be GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). An evaluation should include an endoscopy, pH testing. s any new parent can testify, adding children to a marriage can present immediate challenges demanding accommodation in your way of life. A newborn, for instance, may require adults who formerly believed it impossible to function in modern life without eight hours of sleep, proper nutrition and regular showers to find ways to get by. After they, as toddlers, learn to sleep through the night (he says, understanding your results may differ), the challenges may morph. For instance, once a toddler learns to a) walk and b) turn a door knob, you may want to consider teaching them to knock.

Experience has taught me such realizations are worth their weight in gold as a parent. Now, I try to moderate my reactions to sticky, cracking bolts and other frustration-inducing elements of home and auto repair, particularly when it’s obvious little ears can be listening and little eyes can be watching. (Key word: Try.) But the behavior modifications extend far beyond that.
But certainly one of the biggest challenges arises at the moment you realize you now own a world-class sponge, and now, you require a world-class filter.
Particularly, it’s become crystal clear that my little ones, and perhaps even their known associates, also pick up on how their mother and father treat each other.
For me, the moment came the first time I saw my little one throw down an object she was using as a tool, and yell, frustrated the device was not producing the result she was seeking.
This doesn’t mean we pretend we never disagree. Even an intense disagreement, provided it doesn’t go over the line, can produce opportunities to model forgiveness, reconciliation, grace and compromise.
In that moment, the self-realization left me thinking just two things:

her, that’s meant baseball games, the symphony orchestra, sci-fi movies and TV, and even whitewater rafting (she won’t budge on the skydiving yet, though.) Through it all, we hope our young ones use their powers of super-absorption to take in a proper mindset for the moment their significant other enters, stage right, and mom and dad become plot devices in their narrative. We hope they not only have heard, but can see, how their significant other is supposed to treat them – and how they are supposed to treat their partners – to note the best romance springs out of a bed lined with love, laughter, grace and conciliation. And we hope they find someone who also shares a passion for sharing experiences together – even if it may mean jumping together out of a perfectly good airplane.

Don’t be afraid to add pattern to pieces of furniture outside of the living room. Entryway benches or dining room chairs can bring in a new, fresh look and color to existing décor or a pale pallet.
Q: It’s our first home, so our space is small. How can we make the most of it?
A: Hanging a mirror is a great way to visually make a room look larger.

have a sunroom in my house and I spend almost every day sitting in my leather chair looking out the windows at my garden. Some days I only get a few minutes to reflect, other days I can actually sit and read and watch the birds flit about or the snowfall. I have learned by sitting and just staring out the window to appreciate every season that we have here in northern Illinois. It also really helps to have a nice view to spend that minute looking at. I always tell my clients to consider the view out their kitchen window when planning a garden. I know that I look out the window above my sink every single day so that is the view of my garden that I love the best. I can see a background of graceful, weeping Serbian

Spruce that serves as a screen to hide my neighbor’s driveway (no offense, Tammie…I planted them before you moved in!). In front of them I have a birdbath that is frequented by some faithful birds. When they tire of my birdbath they head for my tiny pond garden on my patio and sit in it like it’s their own personal spa. I sometimes find myself staring at them and creating a dialogue in my head of how the bird world works. Do they worry about their kids? Did they volunteer one too many times to bring snacks to baseball? Are they having a girls’ day out or just trying to sneak a shower before feeding the kids? I have something making a statement at all times – there is native Columbine and some random bulbs
planted as a memorial to a fallen lizard pet in the spring, followed by a gorgeous Serviceberry that feeds those same birds in summer. I can see the edges of a large ‘Gracillimus’ Maiden Grass swaying in the wind next to some brand new ‘Wichita Blue’ Junipers. For late season I have a ‘Sweet Caroline’ Hibiscus that will reward me with paper plate-sized pink and red blooms in July and August. I filled in some blanks last year with a new Bee Balm, a couple of Hosta transplants, some interesting Coral Bells with cool foliage, and some Sedge – all to compliment the Calamintha that bloomed all summer long. I can see my favorite tree too – a ‘Gold Rush’ Redwood. Yes an Illinois Redwood! It has lacy gold foliage all summer then loses its

More than meets the eye Flowers have come to hold meaning beyond the beautiful blooms

We love flowers. The shape, their color, and the heavenly way so many smell. They brighten up a room, a garden, and even a lapel, and have been offered to others to show love, gratitude, consolation, respect and friendship.

he 4th Quarter of 2018 was a painful one for most investors as major market indices declined precipitously resulting in the first negative calendar year returns that we’ve seen since the financial crisis. You may have heard that we have been in a bull market which had gotten “long in the tooth” and in fact to find our last bear market you would have to go back to the period from October 2007 to March of 2009. Since it has been a while since we’ve seen these kinds of markets it is probably a good time to revisit some important classifications as well as to be reminded of some market-cycle perspectives.

First, a few quick definitions: BEAR MARKET: a bear market occurs when securities prices fall 20 percent or more from recent highs. The term comes from a bear’s method of attacking its prey in which it swipes its paws downward.
BULL MARKET: a bull market is one in which securities prices are rising and anticipated to continue to do so. This moniker of this state of market optimism comes from a bull’s method of attacking, in which it thrusts its horns upwards into the air.
CORRECTION: it is not unusual during a bull market to have the market pull-back or correct. Market corrections differ from a bear market as they are less severe and are short-term, typically lasting less than two months. As this article is written well ahead of the publishing date, I have no idea at what point of the cycle the markets will be in when you read this. What I do know is that the recent market pull-back and volatility have reminded many of us of the realities of investing. In order to position for potential greater reward there is very real risk that a portfolio takes on. While it is always more fun to see one’s investments grow rather than contract, as the graph below shows historically investors have been rewarded for taking on calculated risk.
Although past performance is no guarantee of future results, it is worth noting that historically, investing in the U.S. stock market has rewarded patient investors. Odds are in your favor if you have the patience to allow the markets to work for you. If historical figures are cold comfort and you are still feeling anxious about your portfolio, you owe it to yourself to schedule a meeting with your financial advisor to review your risk tolerance relative to your current asset allocation. It is not uncommon to find that one’s appetite for risk may not be what it was once thought to be, and if that is the case for you a strategy for moving to a more conservative portfolio should be examined. If after your consultation you are still uneasy or if you are currently investing on your own without the benefit of the counsel of a seasoned industry veteran, seek a second opinion. SNOWSHOE CURIOSITY IN THE COLORADO BACKCOUNTRY STORY AND PHOTO BY PETER STADALSKY
Work and school shut down between Christmas and New Years, so I tossed a duffel bag of clothes, snow boots, snowshoes and a snowboard in the back of the truck and headed west. I’ve been a snowboarder for 17 years and still hadn’t carved any Rocky Mountain powder. What I found interesting when I got to Colorado was that while many people buy lift tickets and get carried up the mountain to ride down, many people hike up non-resort claimed mountains and take the path less traveled. This was the path I sought. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Getting a lift ticket and riding the iconic ski resorts is one option out west - and it’s a great one, too. I drove out to Snowmass Mountain next to Aspen and spent a day on some of the best runs I’ve ever have rode. But there are other ways to enjoy all that snow, and at a significantly lower cost. A few common ways you can traverse snow trails and find a backcountry ride down is by snowshoe, skins, or splitboards. Snowshoes provide flotation in powdery snow so you don’t sink every step in the snow like a pole into mud. Ski skins lay along the bottom of your skis are prevent you from sliding backwards while climbing uphill. And a splitboard is a snowboard that splits longways, essentially into skis, and can be equipped with skins as well. I already had snowshoes, so I secured my snowboard to my back and trekked up the mountain. I met up with a cousin and set out from the trailhead to Mayflower Gulch. The path takes you on an old, two-mile long mining road back to the gulch. You follow the snaking trail through tall evergreens until the tree line abruptly ends and opens up to a semi-circle of bare rock mountains against a bluebird sky. The steep bowl formed in the center of the mountains is the gulch. On your way into the gulch there are some dilapidated cabins, most with only two or three walls left; the last remnants of lost dreams striking

gold during the western rush. After passing the cabins I had to slap on the snowshoes. The snow bowl is around 12,000 feet elevation and my origins of living at practically sea level were starting to show. Just tying my boots in the parking lot had me out of breath. We trudged through the deep snow for a good half hour before hitting the highpoint in the gulch. By this time, all the other skiers and hikers had cleared out and the sound of silence overtook the valley. I breathed in the still, cold air and took in the panorama of peaks surrounding me in every direction. Blankets of white covered nearly every surface, save some green trees poking through the snow like carrots waiting to be picked. If it weren’t 15 degrees I probably would have snuck in a quick nap. Finally we bound our feet to our boards and dropped into the bowl’s fresh powder. Having an entire mountain of snow to yourself is like striking a snow day as a child, finding out you don’t actually have to be trapped in school all day, but rather will be building igloos and having snowball fights. No matter how you wish to experience adventure it’s all about exploring one’s curiosity and finding ways to feel like a kid again.
