Tips to find a job in the modern market

Professionals know that standing out in a crowded field of applicants has long been a challenge when seeking a new job. That challenge grew more difficult in the internet era, when it became vastly easier and quicker to apply for a new opportunity but simultaneously more difficult to stand out from the many other applicants who could apply in just a few minutes.

The modern job market certainly requires a different approach to finding a job than in years past. However, some useful points can help talented professionals find their next job.

• Hone your networking skills. Networking is a vital skill for modern professionals, including those looking for a new job. Though internet reports suggest as much as 85 percent of job openings are now filled through networking, that data has been debunked and characterized as a myth. Still, networking can help professionals learn about openings before they’re listed and also provide insight into a company’s culture.

• Create a visible online profile. LinkedIn was long considered the go-to platform for professionals to establish an online profile, and that’s largely still the case. Though some LinkedIn users complain that jobs advertised on the site are not removed even weeks after they’ve been filled and others feel the site has become a more traditional social networking site and less a professional networking platform in recent years, it’s still a go-to platform among human resources professionals and recruiters. In fact, a recent report from Jobvite found that 87 percent of recruiters utilize LinkedIn to identify candidates. So while some may view LinkedIn as less useful than it used to be, HR professionals continue to value it.

• Create an informative online profile. It’s important to have an online profile in the modern professional world and equally vital to make that profile as informative as possible. Avoid lengthy sentences that HR professionals and others are unlikely to read in favor of bullet points of relevant experiences and skills. It’s possible to be both concise and informative, and professionals should aspire to be both when crafting their online profile.

• Keep looking. Though it’s hard to confirm online claims regarding how many applications the average job seeker submits before landing a new job, various sources indicate a person can expect to apply for as many as 200 jobs before successfully finding new work. That’s a lot of leg work and frustration, but it’s vital that professionals avoid waving the white flag. A new opportunity will eventually arise, particularly for those who commit to finding a new job.

Surprising features of shopping local

A movement to “shop local” gained steam as more communities faced few options outside of big box stores. The shop local approach encourages consumers to patronize local businesses, and even those devoted to the cause might not realize how beneficial it can be. The following is how communities and residents can win when shopping local.

• Shopping local increases employment opportunities. Small businesses employ more workers in the United States than their larger counterparts, creating two out of every three new jobs, according to the Small Business Administration. In fact, small businesses account for 99.7 percent of all employer firms in the United States. Buying locally means employment levels are either going to be stable or there will be more opportunities for local residents to work in the community.

• Shopping local does not cost more money. Many people are under the assumption that buying locally is always more expensive. But this isn’t always the case. Local shops may offer a range of products from a particular region, which will reduce shipping costs, and that savings can be passed on to the consumer. Plus, small businesses may offer special discounts and promotions more readily than nationwide chains, so consumers can get more value for their money.

• Shopping local helps to keep money in the community. Patronizing local stores creates a recirculation of money in the community. Dollars spent in town raise the overall level of economic activity, which helps pay salaries, and builds up the local tax base.

• Shopping local can help the planet. Environmentalists were among the first

people to promote local consumption, as buying local can cut down on transportationrelated pollution.

• Shopping local stretches beyond seasonal events. Certainly there are a host of local merchants that do much of their business during key times of the year or specialize in seasonal produce. However, many local businesses also offer products year-round, and these local merchants include artisans, designers, musicians, and clothing retailers.

How to balance work and family

Constant connectivity due to the bevy of digital devices at one’s fingertips continues to blur the lines between individuals’ professional and personal lives. For many individuals, the challenge of balancing family and work is a notable challenge. Rather than a strict split of half of time spent at work and half on family matters, many people are embracing a more fluid concept of work-life integration. But work can encroach on personal time if people are not careful. Nowadays, it’s more about creating a rhythm where both aspects of life can thrive. Here are some ways to achieve that.

• Flexible scheduling. Rather than the traditional 9 to 5 work schedule, flexible hours can enable employees to work the hours that best suit them. This situation recognizes that often family schedules do not fit a rigid mold, and sometimes workers may need to be home during traditional business hours. Flexibility enables taking a break to attend a school event, or working later hours to catch up on emails.

• Setting boundaries. This is a critical step in finding work-life balance. Remote work, still is a popular option for many people. Boundaries for remote workers can include creating a dedicated workspace that one “leaves” at the end of the day. Family as well as coworkers should be aware of working hours so they know an appropriate time to contact an employee. Unplugging from technology during family time is essential.

• Prioritize tasks. It is key to identify top priorities both at work and at home. At work, one can focus on high-impact tasks and learn to delegate lesser tasks whenever possible. At home, the entire family should be involved in assigning and handling age-appropriate chores. This teaches kids life skills and also lessens the load on parents.

• Support system. A support system at work and at home can be beneficial. Leaning on a colleague or a partner at home to share responsibilities lessens stress on one person. Connecting with other parents in the area also can facilitate the sharing of ideas, responsibilities and advice.

• Self-care. It may seem counterintuitive to take time for oneself when you’re already stretched thin, but self care is vital for those trying to balance work and home life. By scheduling time for activities that help a person recharge, including exercise, meditation, a hobby, or a walk, it’s possible to maintain mental and physical health.
