New open class categories, ag tradition headlines Jasper County Fair By Mike Mendenhall Jasper County Tribune COLFAX — The 2015 Jasper County Fair will kickoff Friday at the fairgrounds in Colfax, and fair officials have created three new open class categories adding to what has been a growing part of fair participation in recent years. Following Friday’s 5 p.m. opening ceremonies carrying the theme “Blue Jeans and County Fair Dreams,” a prime time 7 p.m. event will see aspiring rodeo riders try their hand at mutton bustin’ under the big tent. The event takes all the action of bull riding and shrinks it down to pintsized play for youngsters. All children under a certain age and weight will be able to saddle up on sheep and see how long they can hold on — with the proper safety measure taken. “It’s a fun thing, and the kids love it,” said Rhonda Guy, Jasper County Fair communications manager. “It has been done for several years at the Iowa State Fair. I’ve seen a lot of kids do it, and it’s good fun.” Open class will also offer two new categories for the artistic. Forgotten places and spaces of Jasper County allows open class photographers to
capture the emptiness of locally abandoned playgrounds, churches and homesteads. Recycled treasures will give crafters a chance to repurpose used, antique or vintage items and make them new again. Social media, Guy said, has been a big driver of open class art in recent Jasper County Fairs. “Pintrest has been great for our open class over the last five years — the sewing, the needle work and the crafts,” she said. “We’re hoping to see some bright ideas coming from that and these new events are some of the places we’re hoping it happens.” The board has encouraged staff to continuing to grow open class contests, striving to keep the fair relevant and fresh for decades to come. “We want to let people know that it’s about 4-H and FFA and more. They don’t have to live on a farm to do the fair. Our fair is there for the entire family,” Guy said. “That is a big part of it. We’re there to promote the 4-H kids and give them some support and show what the FFA kids have going on, but also to remind grandpa and grandma, mom and dad and little brother and little sister that they can be a part of it too.” This year’s county
fair parade will be held 7 p.m. Monday on South Walnut Street in Colfax with 2015 grand marshal and former fair board member Henry Zuidema leading the procession. The Sully resident has been extremely active in the fair for decades, beginning his fair board service in 1983. He’s served as fair superintendent, founded the fair’s horseshoe tournament and still has grandchildren and great-grandchildren who participate in the week-long event. A crowd favorite returning this year is chainsaw artist Josh Hollan, of Mitchellville. He will bring his woodcarving skills back to Colfax. Hollan will trim tree stumps and wood scraps in to masterpieces all day Saturday. With all the additions and costs involved, fair officials still want people to see the annual celebration as a vacation retreat that will keep visitors’ wallets in their pockets and cash in the bank. Jasper County Fair welcomes back country artist Nick Ryan By Alex Olp Newton Daily News Other than all the animal shows and the numerous available contests and classes people can enter, the Jasper County Fair has — once again — plenty of entertaining features fairgoers can enjoy. For the main entertainment, local country artist Nick Ryan will be performing July 20. Ryan performed at last summer’s Jasper County Fair and will take the main concourse stage from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Ryan is a familiar face to the area, performing numerous times at Greencastle Tavern in Mingo and playing in recent years at the Jasper County Fair. “He was really good last year,” Jasper County Fair Vice President Doug Woebbeking said. “He performed right there on the grand course and he drew a big crowd. He did good.” Jasper County Fair’s Danette Pease is in charge of organizing entertainment for the week-long event and said Ryan is the perfect performer
to have at the fair. “Everybody really enjoyed what he did for us and we had a really good turnout,” Pease said. “With having all the people we have down there, providing touching music for all ages is what we’re looking for and Nick can do that.” During the day, kids joining the fun at the fair will have carnival games to enjoy and a bounce house to be played in July 19-20. A dunk tank will also be featured, where people will have the opportunity to dunk fair board members and local
businessmen. Kids can return on the final day for the annual teen dance July 23. A DJ will set the mood for the dance at 9 p.m., and it will go until midnight at the exhibit building. In past years it has drawn in a crowd of 300 to 500 people and similar turnouts are expected this summer. Throughout the week, fairgoers can also watch wood carver Josh Hollon chip away at his art pieces, which will be put up for sale at the wood carver sculpture auction July 20. The auction will take
place at the pavilion and is scheduled for 9 p.m. All the entertainment, including Nick Ryan’s threehour performance, is free to enjoy and is a reason for everyone to join the fun July 1723, Woebbeking said. “It’s free and it’s just a very friendly small town atmosphere where people can enjoy the fair,” he said. The 2015 Jasper County Fair Princess said agriculture and animal husbandry educational experiences are about more than simply how to raise plants and animals. There are important life lessons as well. Emily Zahurones of Baxter received the fair princess title last week after the participant who was initially given the sash resigend from the position. That
gave Zahurones a princess title that not only gives her a more visible role at the Jasper County Fair, which begins this week, but also adds to a long list of honors and awards she’s received through the years. He and an Angus heifer are the two animals Zahurones will take to the county fairgrounds this year. She’ll also compete in a poultry category, but no one is bringing live birds to Iowa county fairs this year due to the avian influenza outbreak.
“There are so many life skills you learn from showing animals,” Zahurones said. “Not only do you learn about health and vaccinations, and things you might need to know later, but you also learn about how to conquer challenges.” One of those challenges is tentatively named “Ruby.” That’s her Angus heifer that she was trying to break a couple of weeks ago, taking the cow around in small circles as she tried to get Ruby to be still for a moment. Zahurones will also be showing
Swizzle, an Australian Shepherd, in the county fair dog show. He has many qualifications, including a first-place honor in obedience at both the 2013 and 2014 county fairs. While she still had some time to get Ruby show-ready in terms of making her more leadable, it’s not easy to drag a year-and-a-half old animal, which weighs hundreds of pounds, around an arena, but Zahurones has never been ZAHURONES | 14

By Mike Mendenhall Jasper County Tribune NEWTON — It’s been less than a month since 2015 Jasper County Fair Queen Jaci Reeves received her crown at the June 20 county fair Round-Up, but the Newton teen has already begun a nearly county-wide tour. The 17-year-old Newton High School senior-to-be has represented the fair’s agricultural traditions in two parades — celebrating Kellogg’s Sesquicentennial and the Fourth of July in Newton. Reeves is now preparing for
their main event — the July 17-23 fair. Although she’s already prepping for the Iowa State Fair Queen pageant, Reeves said it’s agriculture that inspired her to make a run for the crown. “The dress is a red color, long and very glitzy. I definitely love glamorous dresses,” Reeves said. “But I like the agriculture aspect more. I get to talk to farmers, talk to the exhibitors about their animals and see how much work they put into them.” Reeves grew up in a residential setting in Newton and did not have a traditional farming background. But en-
couragement from her family, mother Staci Bird and father Jack Reeves and after four years in Newton’s FFA program, Reeves began to shift her focus towards Iowa’s fields and pastures. She even has a tentative plan to attend Iowa State University and study agricultural education. In FFA, Reeves tested her skills in parliamentary procedure, soil nutrient content and agronomy, but it was relationships forged with fellow FFA teammates studying agricultural issues this year which gave her favorite moments in the ag field. The group
researched and gave a presentation on the proposed Dakota Access oil pipeline’s potential affects on Jasper County’s farmland. When they were done, Reeves said local farmers were coming to her team for information. “We educated ourselves well enough to have people asking us outside of the competition about what the pipeline would entail and where it would go,” she said. For Reeves, being crowned county fair queen was about representing something more important — an industry at the heart of her surrounding community. “Growing up, I always thought, ‘look at those cheerleaders out on that football field. That would be awesome to represent the football team or the basketball team,’” Reeves said. “But when I started getting involve in agriculture I figured why not go for something that represents something even greater and go for country fair queen.” During last year’s county fair queen coronation, Reeves sat in the crowd watching her childhood friends Shelby Deaton and Amber Knight crowned 2014 Jasper County Fair Queen and Princess, respectively, and she felt a need to be up on the fair stage representing local agriculture. “I talked to Amber Knight. I just asked her tons of questions and if I should run,” Reeves said. “She really encouraged me to definitely put in an application and try for it.” Reeves said the race to the 2015 crown was competitive, but she appreciates the friendships she was able to forge with her fellow queen contestants. In many FFA competitions, she said, talking to other contestants is prohibited, so a trip to a local ice cream parlor while waiting for the fair Round-Up to begin was a welcomed diversion. “I befriended all of them. Zahurones Continued from Page 7 one to back down from agricultural challenges. The daughter of Dale and Beth Zahurones is a seven-year member of 4-H and is a cow/calf producer herself. She is a homeschooled high school senior-to-be, although she participates in activities at her hometown high school in Baxter. She works at the Baxter Oil Company, and has still found time for FFA, band, speech, drama, Girl Scouts and volleyball. As if a lenghty history participation in agriculture, scouting and athletics weren’t enough, Zahurones is also a musician. She was selected to play the clarinet in the National FFA band and that organization’s national competition expo, held last fall in Louisville, Ky., and she’s held several local FFA and 4-H officer positions. Zahurones plans to attend Des Moines Area Community College after high school, eventually earning a bachelor’s degree at a university in either ag education or communications. She said she plans to enter Swizzle in the dog show at next year’s county fair, but this is most likely her last year for cattle and poultry. Swizzle is about four or five years old. He steals the spotlight, and has a ton of energy — which is what Zahurones needs to have as she prepares for the hectic weeks leading up to county fair time. “I love being around animals,” she said. “I like to show people the benefits animals give us.” Contact Jason W.
