‘Fairest’ Of Them All 2021 Jasper County Fair Queen Kelcie Steenhoek loves all things fair — especially Oreo stacking
by Christopher Braunschweig Kelcie Steenhoek is a self-professed fair fan. Which is a great quality to have when you’re the Jasper County Fair Queen. At the time of her coronation in June, Steenhoek was already looking forward to this year’s fair. Steenhoek is a die-hard fan of the Oreo Stacking Contest, which she said should include Christmas cookies to match the “Christmas in July” theme. “It’s going to be an awesome fair!” Steenhoek said. “There’s going to be so much to do and I’m really excited to be a leader to all these younger kids. Excited to see everybody at the fair this year, especially with COVID last year. I’m so excited to get back and have things a little more normal than they were.” Steenhoek was one of four candidates who competed in the 2021 Jasper County Fair Queen Contest this year. She vied for the top honor alongside Dakota Bokhoven — who was also crowed the county fair princess — as well as Eleigh Davis and Ellie Dunsbergen. “I’m just excited for the fair to kind of get back and be better than ever before,” she said. Kelcie Steenhoek is the daughter of Joe and Lisa Steenhoek. She attends Des Moines Area Community College and is an alumni of Colfax-Mingo. She was involved in FFA, dance team, football cheerleading, wrestling cheerleading, student council, GeneratiOn, softball, National Honor Society and served as football manager. Currently, she is an agribusiness student at DMACC. As fair queen Steenhoek wants to lead others as well as have the chance to uphold those leadership values.

To beef up entertainment options at the fairgrounds, organizers have rearranged the rodeo to take place during the week of the Jasper County Fair and have added even more features — like a live music concert and mutton bustin’ — to engage crowds who have been rodeo-less for the past year. Alan Guy, a fair board member and organizer of the Jasper County Fair Rodeo and Ty Carlson Memorial Bull Ride, said the event is typically a held a month or so before the fair. This year organizers decided to join forces per se so guests could enjoy more entertainment at the fairgrounds. Contestants in a roughstock-style rodeo ride bulls and Broncs and race barrels. The rodeo is held at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Jasper County Fairgrounds. “We’re during fair night so you can come to the fair, see some of the stuff that’s going on and then be able to buy your ticket at the gate and go in and see a rodeo that evening,” Guy said. “We’re trying to throw everything at the wall right now … trying to pack as much as we can and make it a good value.” Organizers hoped for this type of rodeo all along. When the rodeo was first created, it was to help drum up excitement for the upcoming fair. Now it’s one of the main attractions at this year’s fair. Plus, the rodeo scene seems to have a pretty decent following in the county and Colfax in particular, Guy said. Paired alongside the rodeo is the Ty Carlson Memorial Bull Ride, which honors the eponymous Colfax bull rider who died in a single-vehicle car accident in 2017 at the age of 19. The bull riding event — established by his parents Todd and Kari Carlson — reflects Ty’s passion for the sport. The memorial bull ride also helps fund a scholarship in Ty’s name. Last year, both the roundup rodeo and memorial bull ride were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Normally, organizers start to gather sponsors by April or May, but by then the state had shut down many businesses. Guy said it became a barren wasteland for rodeos, and there was no way to fund them.
“Realistically, we couldn’t go to sponsors and ask, ‘Would you be willing to help put this on?’ knowing that they’re closed and they were hurting, too,” Guy said. “So it was kind of one those let’s just pump the brakes on this year, it’s not going to happen. We’ll restructure and figure out what we can do for next year.” With a year off, organizers were able to critically examine the rodeo and feel better about changing the format and timing of the event. “I think most people are excited about it,” Guy said. “It’s something new, it’s something fun during the fair. It adds a lot. We’ve been trying to get some feedback over the years … some input in terms of what would (people) like to see differently about fair. A lot of was: ‘We really wish there was entertainment.’” Guests want more things to do when they’re at the Jasper County Fair. Plain and simple. Guy said folks still like being at the campgrounds and enjoying their time with friends and family or watching the kids show animals. That is the main focus of the fair, but Guy admits it would be nice to have something different. By having an entertainment option like the rodeo, Guy said it ultimately helps bring in more people to the fair to see all the hard work and projects the 4-H kids have done over the past year. Admittedly, it’s a risk. But Guy and his fellow board members are optimistic, especially after a year hiatus thanks to the pandemic. “We’re at this point where we’re like, ‘Come out and enjoy it!’” Guy said. “That’s the biggest thing now. There will be some little things here and there that may not go as planned, but we’ll take it in stride and work with it. The most important thing is to bring the families out. We’d love to have experience fair.” Tickets for the rodeo, which is sponsored by the Doerring family, are available at the gate or online. Adults $10, kids 6-12 cost $5 and ages 5 and under enter free. Singer Cody Carter, presented by Clemon-Maki Insurance, will perform following the rodeo. The concert is free with admission to the rodeo.

The Barnyard Babies are back
The Barnyard Baby Contest Saturday morning at the fair by Jamee A. Pierson A fair favorite for more than 25 years, the Barnyard Baby Contest is back, this year during the fair. On July 17, kiddos from newborns to 5 years old and girls from 6 to 11 years old will be able to show off in their themed outfits and entertain the crowd along the way. “This event has always been special to me,” organizer Laurie Moffitt said. “I enjoy seeing all the kids outfits and the smiles on their faces. I think it is a great way to get involved at the county fair for little ones
and parents, as well.” Themes this year include: • lil’ Mr. Tractor and lil’ Ms. Sweet Pea for 0-6 month olds • lil’ Mr. Barnyard and lil’ Ms. Barnyard from 7 to 12 month olds • Mr. Lifeguard and Ms. Lifeguard for 1 year olds • Farmboy and Farmgirl for 2 year olds • Cowboy and Cowgirl to 3 year olds • lil’ Prince and lil’ Princess for 4 year olds • lil’ King and lil’ Queen for 5 year olds For girls only 6 to 8 year olds can compete for Junior Jasper County Fair Prin-

The Barnyard Baby Contest is sponsored by Dickerson Mechanical. “This contest draws more than 100 people and it is fun for the whole family,” Moffitt said. “By having it at the county fair I hope to get more families to sign up for 4H and to also tour the fairgrounds and all it has to offer for them.”

The Right Guys Longtime fair contributors Mike and Rhonda Guy say being grand marshals is an ‘honor’ by Christopher Braunschweig If it wasn’t for the Jasper County Fair, there’s a chance Mike and Rhonda Guy would have never met and would not be celebrating their 43-year wedding anniversary later this month. But like so many people in the county, the fair was and has always been intrinsically tied to their lives. So it must have been destiny. Mike and Rhonda have not only participated in the Jasper County Fair as kids in 4-H, but as adults they’ve devoted many years to organizing and volunteering to keep the event as strong as ever. Knowing that, it’s no surprise the Guys were named this year’s fair grand marshals. Mike said it’s a real “honor.” “Both of us having been on the other side you know we always try to choose somebody that’s deserving, so I’d like to think that they follow those same procedures and that we are deserving of this honor,” Mike said. Rhonda added, “It’s very humbling. We work with a lot of cool people and for them to pick amongst their own for something like this is cool.” Both Rhonda and Mike have served on the fair board in the past. Rhonda devoted 28 years on the board, while Mike spent about six years on it and also worked as the dairy superintendent. Both have held several titles and duties throughout the fair’s lifespan. Heck, they still do. Today, Rhonda even works as coordinator of the open class building. Ever since 1979 Rhonda has been involved in one way or another with the Jasper County Fair. What’s kept them around so long? Mike says they both had good experiences with the fair when they were kids. After all, it’s how they met. “I think it’s part of giving back,” Mike said.
“We felt that there was something that we got out of it that was important to us, so we did that for our kids and our grandkids to a certain extent. We’d like to think by keeping this place going and improving it that the youth today is also getting something out of it.” Same as they did when they were children. Rhonda said the reasons people love the county fair so much is because of family and tradition and watching the young kids in the area grow. “That’s what it’s all about,” she said. “From the time it was us, to our kids, to our grandkids, to our friends’ kids — you’re doing it as a family.” Mike added, “Some of our best friends we acquired because of county fair.” Why do people come back every year? Mike says for some it’s a tradition. For others, Rhonda said it’s getting a new experience. The open classes in 2019 had 1,192 entries and over 11 divisions. Some of those are 4-H people or their families, Rhonda said. “Others are ones who have never been to the fair before or have experienced it, showed
up, liked what they saw and they came back the next year or participated,” Rhonda said. “That’s how you create the new family that goes with it. And that’s what keeps it going.” It’s a challenge for organizers to keep the fair interesting and engaging, but Rhonda suggested it’s a welcomed challenge. Mike
just loves the fact that the county still has a fair, and he loves the people that regularly participate or visit the annual summer event. Many of these people Mike considers good friends. “They become our friends through county fair and some of them this is the only time we see them,” Mike said. “It’s almost like a family reunion.”

A new view for the tractor pull Announcers stand constructed after donation from fair family by Jamee A. Pierson On the far west side of the Jasper County Fairgrounds, the tractor pull track sits waiting for its moment. A popular event at the fair, the area has a new addition for the 2021 event. A new announcers stand was constructed on the west side, centered on the track and is ready to help provide even more entertainment while the contestants do their best to pull the sled as far as they can. “We had a money donation from the Carl Wilson family,” Jasper County Fair Board President Jerry Elscott said. “The family was very fair oriented and was extremely interested in tractor pulls and restoring tractors.. “It is a brand new stand that we have never had back there before. It is some-
thing we had looked at and everything just kind of fell into place and they came forward.” The stand, white in color, has a raised area for the announcer(s) to stand and oversee the activities underway. It is covered to help with sun and weather and has additional space for needed supplies or storage at the track. “We installed a speaker system out there with speakers on the poles so hopefully the crowd will be able to hear the announcements over the tractors,” Elscott said. “It is a welcome addition. It looks really nice back there now. They did an excellent job.” The land where the tractor pull sits had also been gifted to the fair from the City of Colfax. With everything coming together, the tractor pull area is now set for an even bigger and better contest.
