When fairgoers gather in the arena for the annual Jasper County Fair Rodeo, they’re not only getting a fun entertainment experience, they’re paying tribute to a young man who departed them way too early in his life. The Ty Carlson Memorial Bull Ride honors the eponymous rider and his passion for the sport of rodeo. The 19-year-old from Colfax was killed in a single-vehicle accident north of town in 2017. Shortly after, Todd and Kari Carlson organized the bull ride in his name. At the start of every event, Ty’s family members enter the arena on their horses. Ty’s horse trots along beside them and remains saddled but riderless. Anyone who has attended the rodeo and bull ride will know a riderless horse is a symbol of a fallen warrior. Ty was a warrior in the sport of rodeo and in life, striving with each ride to be better and work harder. Crowds who gather during the bull ride can feel the passion Ty felt about the sport. Ty was an avid rodeo enthusiast ever since he could straddle a sheep. When he grew older, the natural born rider saddled steers and bulls. Shortly after the accident, the Carlsons and rodeo community pulled together to host the first memorial ride and create scholarships in Ty’s honor. Alan Guy, a fair board member who has organized the rodeo for the past few years, said the Carlson family has become very involved with the fair since the introduction of the rodeo and bull ride. Guy’s goal for the event has always been to improve community impact and give folks a reason to celebrate the county. “How do we get more people to go: ‘Man, we gotta go to the county fair! It’s a wonderful time!’ And I think (the rodeo and bull ride) have helped. We even reach people who aren’t local,” Guy said of the now five-year event. “It’s kind of nice to see it grow, even if it’s little by little.” In 2021, the rodeo and memorial bull ride were held during the fair, whereas in the past it was scheduled as a kickoff event or pre-fair promotion. Guy said then that volunteers wanted more entertainment options for fair visitors. Apparently so did fairgoers by the looks of those long lines of people waiting to get in last year. “We were more than impressed,” Guy said. “We had a fantastic turnout last year. I think we were all optimistic. It made sense and it seemed like it would work very well. When that night happened, we were thrilled. Just a phenomenal turnout with lots of people. Which is exactly what we wanted.” It got people to the fairgrounds. Whether it was the promise of entertainment or the community

Cont. 9 wanting to support the memory of a fellow Jasper County resident (or a mixture of both), the rodeo and bull ride continues to draw crowds. This year, the rodeo will be held 7 p.m. Friday, July 15. Typically held for the weekend, the rodeo and bull ride is moving up a day from its usual weekend schedule. Board members hope the rodeo will kickstart the fair a day early. Usually the crowds start piling in on the weekend, but now they have even more reason to come out on a Friday night. “By Saturday and Sunday you’ve really hit the ground running,” Guy said. “We’re kind of throwing that out the window by moving a big event to the first night … We have kind of added another night to fair. It’s a little shake up now. But we’ll tackle it and we’ll get through it. It’ll be good. And we’re so excited!” Of course! After all, it’s not their first rodeo.

Meet the 2022 Jasper County Fair Queen
Lauren Zaabel takes home crown, Morgan Hansen named fair princess Lauren Zaabel has finally completed her goal. For many years she had her eye on the Jasper County Fair Queen crown. During the Jasper County Fair Queen Pageant on June 18 at the Newton Community Theatre, the 18-yearold was crowned this year’s fair queen. Zaabel competed alongside Morgan Hansen, who was crowned Jasper County Fair Princess. Although Zaabel wished there were more girls competing in the pageant, she cherished her time getting to know Hansen a lot more. Hours before the pageant the two bonded by goofing around with the theater’s costumes. Zaabel is glad she will be able to work the county fair with Hansen.
Zaabel’s favorite part of the county fair is all the different opportunities it has to offer, from the rodeo to the livestock shows and the parade. “There’s something for everybody to do,” Zaabel said. “And I am so glad I get to be a part of everything. (I’m looking forward to) getting to know so many more people than I do. Because I would say, personally, I know a fair amount of people at the fair, but I’ll have more people that will come up and be willing to talk.” With only two contestants for judges to choose from, Zaabel and Hansen were in the unique position of knowing that they were both walking away with a crown. Heather Cup-
ples, queen coordinator and superintendent of the Jasper County Fairgrounds, suggested the fair queen is more than a crown and title. “They hand out ribbons at all the livestock events and even some of the open class stuff that are there, like the pedal pull or the Oreo stacking,” Cupples said. “They even get involved in some of the games and stuff that are there, like dodgeball … a lot of those activities.” Both Zaabel and Hansen will be seen at many events throughout the fair, Cupples added, or they will just talk to random folks or take pictures with kids. Cont. 11 love getting their pictures taken with the fair queen. Cupples said the queen and princess act as role models for the younger fair patrons. Of course, most fair queens and princesses are already familiar with the Jasper County Fair, which is held July 15-21 this year at the fairgrounds in Colfax. “Most of them have either been in 4-H or FFA or something throughout the communities, or they’ve come from that agriculture background,” Cupples said, noting both this year’s queen and princess have worked with cattle on their farms. “It’s very nice to have that background on both of those girls.” Prior to the crowning ceremony, 2021 Jasper County Fair Queen Kelcie Steenhoek thanked everyone for supporting Zaabel and Hansen. It takes a lot of work to get to this moment, Steenhoek said. “And you should really be proud of them.”
GET TO KNOW YOUR QUEEN: Lauren Zaabel is the daughter of Roger and Pam Zaabel. This spring Lauren graduated from Newton High School and will be attending Iowa State University this fall, majoring in agricultural business. Throughout high school she was a member of the Newton FFA and served as president and vice-president. She was also a 4-H County Council member and served as president and secretary. She was involved with the Jolly Workers 4-H Club, the high school girls swim team, student council and the National honors Society. Being involved in FFA, 4-H and county council and showing livestock over the years has fueled Lauren’s love for agriculture. The people of Jasper County helped Lauren find her passion in agriculture and she appreciates her opportunity as fair queen to advocate for agriculture and help others find where their passion lies.

Jasper County Fairgrounds get upgrades to help make the experience that much better Upkeep on the fair grounds is an ongoing and not always flashy process. Throughout the past year, the fair board has been making upgrades that may not jump out but will help those who use and enjoy the fairgrounds before, during and after the fair. “(We did) a little bit for everybody this year,” board vice president Denny North said. “What
we’ve done since the last fair, we’re putting air conditioning in the offices and concession stand. We put air conditioning in the shower house for the campers and we epoxied for the floor in the 4-H building.” Electrical work has also been done on the west side of the grounds to improve the experience of those at the tractor pull and horse arena.
“We have electrical work brought out to the tractor pull announcers stand and we also have some underground conduit around the horse arena to get speaker wires underground and hopefully enhance the sound system at the horse arena, as well,” North said.

Cont. 13 In mid-July, air conditioning units are welcome additions at any building at the fair but the two that were added are in areas that often feel a little more heat. “For the kids working in the concession stand, they are really going to like the air conditioning because the room really got hot with all the crock pots and keeping the meat warm. That will be a big improvement for them,” North said. “The people that use the campgrounds, the shower house would get pretty stuffy by the end of the day with everybody showering and all of the humidity, so hopefully the campers will enjoy that.” In the 4-H building, new epoxy flooring will help improve not only the tread under people’s feet but also give the interior a fresh look
for the fair and the many people who rent it during the year. “If you like going in the 4-H building, it makes it more welcoming. It just starts making things more presentable and upgraded,” North said. “The floor was starting to get a little rough so they ground it and resurfaced it to give it a smoother finish, for safety reasons, as well. It makes the room look more attractive for people as they rent it.” When the board and fair volunteers can, they do the work themselves to help stretch every dollar. With funding coming from the state, county and through donations, among other sources, the board strives to do the most with what they have. “If we can do it we try to do the work ourselves to try to maximize the funding for the fair,” North

said. “I think we’ve done a great job in making the fairgrounds look up-to-date. We’ve gotten a lot of comments from people that rent the property that are very pleased with the condition.” The board is also keeping a running list of upcoming projects for the fair. New fencing for the pavilion is being eyed for upcoming funds along with potentially a new building. “There are always future projects we are looking at. Next, we’re looking at getting some money for fencing inside the pavilion. The fencing is starting to go bad so we’re starting to look at what will
be attractive,” North said. “Down the road we’d like to build another building. Sometimes we lack buildings so someday we’d like to build one, instead of renting a tent. We’d have it for some of the venues, if we have bad weather we could be inside with them. Also, with the free suppers to be in the shade.” Improvements are ongoing at the fair and benefit all those who show, stay or visit the grounds. As funding comes in, more projects will be underway to continue to make the fair the best it can be.
