Getting to know physical therapist Robyn Friedman What conditions do you treat most frequently? I treat all varieties of orthopedic and neurologic injuries, and specialize in treating balance and vestibular disorders (dizziness). I am also certified in dry needling, a new service line we now offer at MercyOne Newton. Where did you grow up? Share a little about your upbringing: I grew up in Pocahontas, Iowa, with my mom and one younger sister. My father lived in Michigan. I lived in Iowa but spent time each summer in Michigan as I was growing up, as well. I was involved in all music and sports activities in high school but had the most personal success with distance running, so decided to pursue this in college at Wartburg and continued to have success there in both cross country and track all four years.
What made you decide to become a physical therapist? I had always been active in sports in high school and college, and I knew I wanted to be involved in the medical field to help people through medicine and/or physical activity. I had a summer job in a PT clinic in Michigan after my first year in college and was impressed with the variety of things they treated in the clinic and how much time they got to spend with their patients through rehab to get them back to full function. It checked all the boxes for me in what I wanted out of a career.
Tell us about your family: My husband Bryan and I met at Wartburg College and we have been married 20 years. We have three children: Isaac goes to college at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Leo is in his first year of high school and Talia is in fourth grade.
How did you find out about this opportunity in Newton, and what made you interested in coming here? My first PT job out of college was in Washington State, and after two years, my husband and I moved back to Iowa, where he was hired as the City Planner for Newton. Within a month of him getting his job, a PT job came open in Newton so I applied and have never looked elsewhere!
What do you enjoy doing when not at work? I am still an avid runner and enjoy doing this in my free time. I also enjoy reading and traveling and spending time with my family. In addition, I serve on the Newton Community School Board and the Jasper County Conservation Board, so these things also take up my time outside of work! I love living in Newton and helping the community in a variety of ways.
