The weather isn’t so frightful, the sun has soaked up every drop of snow and brighter and greener days are upon us. Jasper County’s business owners have long since prepared to fill their stores with an abundance of greenery, flowers and vibrantly colored paintings. Locals have also been just as eager to find home decor to spruce up their homes and replace the remnants of Christmas and winter. There is a lot of inspiration that awaits inside local businesses. Spring City Vintage This Colfax store with a lot of character didn’t disappoint with unique and refurbished items. Spring City Vintage is the perfect place to find filler items for your home and yard. White antique wood signs that read “Thankful,” “Gath-
er” and “Welcome” are stand outs. Spring items included white pitchers filled with flowers and greenery, antique floral tea cup and tea pots, a wagon wheel and accent pillows. Though this store is only open once a month, it continues to filter in new items.
Spring City Vintage offers a lot of character to the city of Colfax. Inside the store, shoppers can find antique pitchers, vases, tea pots, tea cups, books and even antique suitcases. The store will continue to filter in items throughout the season of spring. Spring 2017 • Jasper County Living
Spring has sprung inside of The Farmer’s Wife as there is a variety of greenery and flower stems to choose from. Decorations for Easter, lanterns, wreaths and wall decor can also be found here.
The Farmer’s Wife Walk inside The Farmer’s Wife and find springy cheer hanging head to toe. This local gem seemed to have the most greenery and faux flowers in town with a variety of vases and galvanized metal holders. Preparations for Easter are also just an arm’s
reach away, with bunnies tied with ribbon or rabbits made from wood or stone. Store owner Bonnie Terpstra said she began prepping for spring as early as last summer. Terpstra said she has seen a lot of shoppers on the hunt for green. ...continued on page 12 11

Daises, lilies and wildflowers are just a few of the flower
stems that can be found in 10 large vases all lined up for the taking. Greenery was also in abundance as there were many tin buckets and planters filled, another item in demand this season are cotton stems, which have originally been popular in stores in the south. Other decor items found here included white antique lanterns, floral wreaths, bird houses and wall art.
An abundance of flowers can be found at Fine Things Reclaimed in Newton. Many local businesses have been prepping for spring.
Vibrant paintings can be found at Beckman Gallery in Newton. The shop also offers custom framing and a variety of stone birds.

home decor items such as tulip stems, desk clocks, a variety of stone birds, a bird bath and candle sticks. Many shoppers have come in to the gallery to trade out their winter decor for something fresh.

probably make a cheesecake out of it. I have heard that some people made French toast with it. You can put it in hot chocolate or add chocolate to it.” -Joan Wade There are a few holidays that allow residents to booze-up and paint the town green. Luckily for Jasper County residents, Cadillac Jack’s shared a recipe perfect for bringing the St. Patrick’s Day spirit to any home, no matter how much Irish runs in your veins. “I make it with lots of love,” Joan Wade, co-owner of the Baxter bar said. “It’s magically delicious.” The drinkery began serving homemade Irish cream after
the bartender found a traditional recipe just in time for St. Patrick’s Day. “It took a little trial and error, but I finally got it right,” she said. “I adjusted the recipe I found to my liking. I made it, gave everybody a sample and everybody loved it.” According to Wade, with a wee bit of creativity, food enthusiasts can transform this smooth drink into a million different delectable dishes. “Some people put in their coffee. It is something everybody likes,” Wade said. “(St. Patrick’s Day is) just a day

I remember as a kid going outdoors and looking in the grass for leprechauns and four-leaf clovers.” If you are someone who would rather be served homemade Irish Cream than make it, the pub owners said they will be serving this delicious drink at Cadillac Jack’s March 17. “When St. Patrick’s Day hits, we usually have a good crowd,” Joan said. “People usually go to the parade in Des Moines, and come here
and finish off the evening.” They said no matter if you come by yourself or with a large entourage, the bartenders and the bar patrons will make sure you will have a great time. If the weather allows, patrons can enjoy their creamy drink while listening to live, St. Patrick’s Day-themed music on the bar’s patio. “It’s friendly,” Regan Wade, Joan’s husband and co-owner of the bar said. “You would be amazed to hear about the people who never come in here before and within 20
minutes, everybody in the bar is talking to them and they are talking to everybody. It have a very friendly atmosphere around here. We welcome everyone who comes in.” The bar owners remind celebrants to stay safe this St. Patrick’s Day and enjoy the Irish Cream responsibly. The Baxter pub is located 108 N. Substance Abuse Coalition beginning work on serious issues By Jamee A. Pierson
Substance abuse is an issue that plagues many communities throughout Iowa and the country. The City of Newton, led by Newton Police Chief Rob Burdess, is taking the first steps to address the issue through the formation of a substance abuse coalition. Made up of community stakeholders county-wide, the coalition was formed in partnership with the Alliance of Coalitions For Change, (AC4C), a statewide network seeking to increase the synergy of substance abuse prevention efforts in Iowa. “I contacted the office of drug control policy in Des Moines and I was looking for a substance abuse education program that the police department could partner with the schools and the community to provide an educational element,” Burdess said. “What we fell into was this opportunity.” AC4C was in the process of giving out grants to cities across the state and had one opening left when Burdess contacted them. He found
the opportunity very unique in that it is the first time it has been funneled through a law enforcement agency. “Typically they are funneled through the Department of Health or some other organization and they found that the public or community was not as responsive,” Burdess said. “What they have seen with other types of coalitions, is when law enforcement leads the charge the community is more responsive.” The next step in making the coalition a reality was making contact with local government and nonprofit organizations to obtain statistics on what issues are found in the area. Burdess said they looked to organizations that have to report to the state or a board on an annual basis to development and identify the scope of the program. Organizations include the local school districts, medical institutions and government-funded treatment centers. From there, local businesses, large and small, additional education and treatment centers and other
community stakeholders were invited to meet and begin discussions on creating a coalition. “What we were looking for is a very diverse group of stakeholders so that we have a strong breadth of the problem as well as a more diverse outlook on how to address the substance abuse issues in Newton,” Burdess said. AC4C comes into the picture by providing training and guidance during the meetings. “Through the talks with them, they described what their program was and the success of coalitions have had around the country,” Burdess said. “They had taught this method throughout the country so they have success stories from beyond Iowa.” The training includes a community assessment,capacity circles and an engagement scorecard, logic models, a recruiting/retention plan, a strategic/action plan, a sustainability/evaluation plan and an operational structure. It also provides one person from the collaborative a scholarship
to attend the ToP Facilitative Methods course where they will learn effective communication methods that lead to quick action while building community consensus. Since forming, the group has met four times, each time adding members and gaining an insight into community issues. With AC4C facilitator Angie Asa-Lovstad, the group started to identify issues that need to be addressed and a path to begin work. Burdess said he is happy with how the group is progressing and is excited to see how it will progress in the weeks, months and years to come. “When you look outside of law enforcement, you look at businesses, we know that anybody in the community can see that somebody in their family has or has had a substance abuse problem,” Burdess said. “It is more than just a law enforcement problem, we know we can’t arrest our way out of it. It has to be a community initiative and that is why we are going at it with this approach.”

Get to know: Newton Community Marketing Manager Danielle Rogers
“I feel Newton has become my home — it is welcoming and I can see myself living here for a long time.” Danielle Rogers is the newly hired Newton Community Marketing Manager. Rogers is eager to promote local upcoming events in the community. Rogers moved to Iowa from her hometown in Minnesota, she said she now considers Newton to be home. Q. Where did you grow up and what brought you to Newton? A. I grew up in Worthington, Minn., and I ended up in Iowa when I attended Drake University to study mass communications. I have worked in Newton for five years and lived here for four years. Q. What made you to want to live and work in Newton? A. The small town feel, it’s close enough to a big city and it lets you get involved. Newton has a lot of opportunities for young professionals to get involved. Q. How did you hear about your current position? A. I heard the city council was really wanting to amp up their marketing and this position was the next progressive step. When I heard about it, I knew it fit exactly into what I love to do. Q. What have you been working on so far in your new position as community marketing manager? A. I have been in my position for less than a month and a lot of what I’ve been doing has been with Newton Main Street, working on redoing the city’s website and making a plan on how we are going to work and promote different community events. There is Newton Fest and Bowlful of Blues coming up. I have been stepping from the outside and into the inside, and I’m learning the ins and outs. Q. What are your future plans for this position? A. I hope that I can share the good news about things that are happening in Newton. There are so many good things happening in our community. I want to make sure to be present at a lot of these activities, and I want to make sure the growth of our community is alive and thriving. Q. What is one of your favorite activities to do in Newton? A. In Newton one of my favorite things in the summer is going to the drive-in theater once or twice. It is something that is definitely unique to Newton, and I invite my friends from Des Moines to come with me. Two-wheeled revolution: As trails grow, so does pedaling’s popularity

If it’s Monday in the spring, summer or fall, Newton native Scott Carkhuff can usually be found in fifth gear on the open road. “I’ve always been into sports — football and basketball. But I got a little tired of playing big sports, so I started looking for something else and bought a road bike,” the 32-year-old Carkhuff said. “I got into triathlons and did an Iron Man. It keeps me going.” The local cycling enthusiast begins his trip at the Newton YMCA and rides toward Iowa Speedway and the Christian Conference Center. But he’s rarely alone. When Carkhuff first approached Newton YMCA Associate Executive Director Rhonda Robson about the idea of forming a Newton cycling group, he didn’t know if anyone outside his immediate friend circle pedaled. The YMCA gave the group a couple of free passes and water bottles to hand out as
incentives, and they launched a Facebook group. The group now has 80 riders — 10 to 20 of whom gather every Monday at 5:15 p.m. for a 12 to 20-mile ride. During the winter, many in the group join the YMCA’s spin classes to keep up their cycling skills. The Newton rider is excited about expanding interest in cycling, but the sport’s growth in Jasper County, Carkhuff said, is largely dependent on trails. “I don’t think people understand how much commerce comes with a bike trail. Biking popularity grows as bike trail system expands ...continued from page 21 the friends group are planning multiple events which will bring people to towns along the recreational path. Prairie City, Monroe and Jasper County conservation are also busy developing a trail to connect bike riders in those towns with Mitchellville and eventually Des Moines and Pella. What many businesses on the High Trestle Trail in north-central Iowa will tell you is trails are good for business. Urias opened Mojo in November 2010; it was the first bike shop in Newton since the 1990s. Since the ribbon
cutting, Urias’ business has grown each year, which the biking enthusiast credits to the increasing popularity of the sport in central Iowa. One biking event which Urias hopes catches on is Annie’s Ride. In October 2016, the inaugural 80-mile ride which launched from Iowa Speedway en route to Pella and Lake Red Rock raised more than $37,000 benefitting the Mercy Ruan Neurology Clinic. The ride also had a 40-mile route and a 10-mile family route. Uris doesn’t think the ride got enough publicity, and hopes the second annual ride will grow.
According to Bike Iowa’s website, Annie’s Ride is moving to downtown Des Moines in 2017, but Urias still believes if Newton wants a bike
ride, “this could be it.” “Look at the bike trails,” Urias said. “They’re going all around us. I don’t want Newton to get left out here.”
