Police arrest over 100 protesters By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com OAK BROOK – The beating of drums and chants of, “Raise up, it’s time to raise up,” and, “I’m fed up, I can’t take it no more,” echoed past Hamburger University on May 21 in Oak Brook, as hundreds of protesters assembled and called for a significant pay raise. Fed up with low salaries for quick service restaurant employees, protesters were urging for a pay increase to $15 an hour, up from an average salary of about $8 per hour.

“Give people a fair living wage, it doesn’t need to be more sophisticated than that,” said Service Employees International Union Local 73 Assistant Division Director Tim Ball. “McDonald’s makes billions upon billions of dollars … they can afford to have a loyal staff.” Union member Deana Rutherford of Chicago added “No one who works should have to work in poverty.” She said the fast food company’s “criminally low wages” cost taxpayers, who in turn fund those employees’ public assistance compensation.

Duckworth visits Burr Ridge school By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com BURR RIDGE – Trinity Lutheran School students greeted former U.S. Army National Guard Lt. Col. Tammy Duckworth with eager, outstretched hands and a standing ovation Tuesday, as they lined up to meet the soldier turned U.S. Congresswoman as she made her way to the podium for a Memorial Day address. Tuesday’s visit was the last of several Memorial Day stops Duckworth – who currently represents the 8th Congressional District in Illinois – made from May 24 to 27. During the Trinity Lutheran assembly, she spoke to the student body and staff about the importance and significance of the holiday. “I hope that at some point during the weekend you said a little prayer or maybe said grace,” she said. “That you mention the men and women who died for our freedom in this country and the reason we’re able to have a day off to

celebrate is because they were there for us.” This year marks the 10th anniversary of the aviation incident that injured Duckworth. In a November 2004 mission north of Baghdad, a rocket propelled grenade struck the Black Hawk helicopter she was co-piloting. “One of [the RPGs] happened to hit right beneath where I was sitting in my helicopter,” she said. “It blew off my legs and I almost lost my right arm.” Duckworth attempt to pilot the helicopter, but eventually passed out from blood loss. Fellow Army National Guard servicemen and women fellow helped her to safety and saved her life, she said. But Duckworth didn’t dwell too much on the incident; instead, she celebrated her accomplishments and encouraged the young students – several of whom were born near the beginning of the Iraq War – that they could do anything they put their minds to. For Duckworth, she is a proud member of a small, but

He also shined a light on Duckworth’s character, telling a story in which she took exception to the derogatory comments her fellow soldiers were making about the Iraqi people. “This brave officer stood up at a commander’s meeting and said, ‘This is what I’ve been hearing and this is not how we should be talking about the people who live here,’ ” he said. “It was the right thing to say, and the right thing to do.”

Duckworth spent the next year recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. n She became the director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs in 2006. n In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed Duckworth to be assistant secretary of veterans affairs. n Duckworth was elected to Congress in 2012. n Since her recovery, Duckworth has taken up scuba diving, surfing, skydiving and flies as a civilian pilot. She has also completed several marathons. n Duckworth’s husband, Bryan Bowlsbey, is a major in the Illinois Army National Guard, where he has served since 1987.

BURR RIDGE – To commemorate the life of Peter Troy, who died about 15 months ago after a heart attack, his friends are honoring his memory through the creation of the Peter Troy Memorial Tennis Tournament. The gathering is to attract a combination of friends, family members and others whose paths intersected with the

Students depart for national spelling bee By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com OAK BROOK – As she prepared for her trip to the nation’s capital, Nafisa Asad received a lapel pin from Downers Grove Commissioner Geoff Neustadt, who hoped that the pin would bring her good luck during the upcoming Scripps National Spelling Bee “I wear my pin all the time in the Village of Downers Grove, and with this I wish you good luck,” Neustadt said. After winning the DuPage County Spelling Bee in February, the 13-year-old Oak Brook resident traveled to Washington, D.C., to take part in the 87th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. The competition – which welcomes 281 spellers from throughout the United States – began Wednesday and concluded Thursday night. “I’m very excited about going,” said Nafisa, an eighth-grader at Herrick Middle School.

semifinals and finished 19th,” said the 14-year-old eighth-grader at McClure Junior High School. Alia said she was “very excited” to return for a second straight year. While she is hopeful of a good showing

at the competition, she also wants to enjoy the extracurricular Scripps sponsored events, such as a barbecue and dance. On May 20, ComEd hosted a pep rally at its commercial center in Oak Brook where local officials, friends and family members wished Alia and Nafisa and Will County representative Meghana Kamineni good luck in the national competition. “We’re really here to cheer them on because when it comes to spelling, they prove to be the best of the best,” ComEd Director of Management Jennifer Montague said. This is the seventh consecutive year ComEd is sponsoring the DuPage County, Will County and suburban Cook County spelling bee champions. ComEd is also covering all expenses for the regional winners and their families to attend the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals. “Earning a place in the national spelling bee is a huge

accomplishment,” she said. “This year there will be 281 students competing, 142 girls and 139 boys and that represents all 50 states.” Earning a spot in the national spelling bee competition doesn’t just come naturally, though, as Nafisa and Alia said their daily spelling practice sessions can range from 30 minutes to three hours. “I usually practice two hours a day,” Nafisa said. “Then I like to write words out so I remember them better.” The preliminary round started Wednesday with finals finishing Thursday. The Scripps National Spelling Bee is broadcasted on the ESPN family of networks. Participating spellers ranged from 8- to 15-years-old, but more than 86 percent were between the ages of 12 and 14, according to the Scripps National Spelling Bee website. HINSDALE – Hinsdale Central and South high schools could debut new lunch menus next fall, as the District 86 Board of Education is considering new bids from four food service providers. At the District 86 Board of Education meeting May 19, Chief Financial Officer Bill Eagan said bids from four companies have been submitted, and he is in the process of analyzing each and narrowing the options to the top two. The food service provider will be determined by a school board vote at an upcoming meeting, Eagan said. Although the board didn’t express dissatisfaction with the current food service provider, which has been with Quest Food Management Services since June 2008, multiple Hinsdale South students have complained about lunch options, according to school board member Claudia Manley. “They didn’t like the meal deal and the amount of food they got for that meal deal, so I guess what I’m interested in is the price [of food], the quantity and the quality, not necessarily low bidder,” Manley said. Along with food provider Quest, Arbor Management Aramark and OrganicLife submitted bids. As a result, the district also will consider having a taste test with students when services are narrowed down to two bidders. Hinsdale South High School Principal Brian Waterman said the student feedback he’s received through surveys has been “generally positive.” “My first fall here [six years ago], a lot of the complaints were centered around cost,” he said, “[the food was] just too expensive,” referencing the Quest food and meal plans. South has since conducted a study and determined the cost increase is “negligible,” according to Waterman, who also noted he hasn’t heard complaints about quality. Maniscalco said he worked with two of the vendors at his prior district, ultimately choosing the provider by conducting a tasting of an array of dishes. “We just ate for a couple hours and you would be surprised how different the food was between vendors. So it was just a great showcase of what they provided,” Maniscalco said. If the district decides to do a taste test, school board member Jennifer Planson emphasized student inclusion is “vital.” “I would encourage staff to come in, I think you need to have all that. And then in the middle of June meeting you have it finalized,” she said. “This [provider] is the winner. This is who we’re going with and be done with it.”

Two men arrested for car burglary WILLOWBROOK – Two men were arrested May 22 after allegedly breaking into vehicles in unincorporated Willowbrook. Kylen Williams, 19, of the 16w000 block of Honeysuckle Rose Lane, was charged with one count of burglary, which is a Class 2 felony, one count of forgery, which is a Class 3 felony and one count of identity theft, which is a Class 4 felony. Carl Dixon Jr., 20, of the

Neighbors helping neighbors in DuPage County communities Great storms blew through recently and I couldn’t help but think about the figurative storms that often blow through people’s lives: health emergencies, job loss, death of a spouse, mental illness, divorce. Some families have all the resources they need to weather the storms of life. Their houses are built on strong COMMUNITY foundations, their financial VOICE future isn’t based on the next Melissa paycheck, they have a comprehensive health insurance Travis policy that covers everything from a bout with the flu to a full-blown mental health crisis. But other families don’t have these resources to help see them through a crisis – this is where organizations, such as People’s Resource Center, can help fill the gap. Built on a model of neighbors helping neighbors, People’s Resource Center has offered a variety of programs to stabilize DuPage County families that are caught in the storms of life. A visit to our food pantries can ease the strain of a too-tight budget. PRC’s clothes closet can help a mother make sure her children have coats and hats to face the cold. A computer class may give an unemployed worker an edge in finding employment and an art class may offer a much-needed respite in a chaotic day. Neighbors truly are helping neighbors at the People’s Resource Center. 1,900 volunteers last year provided the bulk of service delivery; thousands of donations from people all over DuPage support the myriad programs we offer; and congregations, service organizations, community groups and other social service organizations are partnering with People’s Resource Center to assist our neighbors in need. Because of this strong network, DuPage County and its nearly one million residents can face the storms of life knowing that our neighbors will help us when we are tested; that we are a community of caring, ready to roll up our sleeves and help our neighbors in need. Helping one another is not only the right thing to do, but it is what our community and our neighbors do each day. I’m proud to call DuPage County home – I hope you are too.

He said student achievement approved as measured by the math testing. How do we know the improvement was caused by technology? Could good teaching have caused the gain? He then said collaboration, ownership, engagement, staff flexibility and choice also increased. Again, could good teaching have caused these improvements? I am not sure you can state that all of these gains are from a take-home technology program. I am not sure we can afford to give every student a device to use at school and at home. Our taxes are going up, we have pension obligations to meet and we need to show some type of fiscal restraint.

No need for library renovation in Lemont I am at the Lemont library on a regular basis for various reasons and agree with others who have written to Sound Off. I love our library and what it offers. But there is absolutely no need for remodeling, additional meeting rooms, computers, etc. Even the funds already spent for analyzing the “needs” was not necessary. The governing bodies of Lemont need to make more frugal decisions with our tax money. If you’re “looking” for ways to spend tax money, it could be better spent elsewhere in our community. I don’t think there’s a need for examples.

I was at Lilacia Park this morning in Lombard, and a worker there was spraying the faded tulips (bloom was done) with Roundup (glyphosate). I asked why, and he said it helps them [helps restore color]. Is this really necessary? Do we have to have everything look perfect? Such a beautiful place seems natural, but then you learn they think they have to manipulate things with chemicals. Do we really need more chemicals in our ground, which eventually go into the waterways? Hinsdale teen benefits from cystic fibrosis drug ELMHURST – Thanks to a new drug, 16-year-old Dylan Roesch, spends a lot less time every day managing his cystic fibrosis and a whole lot more time playing sports, strumming his guitar and just enjoying being a teenager. “Before, every morning I’d have to wake up and take 15 pills,” Dylan said, describing just one of his daily routines before he began taking Kalydeco. Three years after Dylan was born, he was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that affects the lungs and

digestive system. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation explains a defective gene results in the body producing thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and obstructs the pancreas, stopping natural enzymes from helping the body break down food. When Dylan’s father, Dan, president of Larry Roesch

Auto Group in Elmhurst and Bensenville, heard Dylan’s diagnosis, he worried about what future his son might have since there is no cure for cystic fibrosis. The next 12 years of Dylan’s life were filled with many medications, daily treatments with a nebulizer, hospital visits that often lasted weeks and a feeding tube. In two years, Dylan’s hospital visits, which he admits were starting to get scary, have been replaced with anticipation about his next Hinsdale Central junior varsity volleyball game. Thanks to Kalydeco, a pill Dylan began taking twice a

day in 2012, the Hinsdale teen has been able to reduce his medication by 80 percent. His feeding tube is gone, his lung function is above 90 percent, and he has plenty of time to worry about what he wants to do with his future. “My day-to-day worries changed a lot,” Dylan said. Dylan’s laundry list of hobbies and interests range from playing guitar at School of Rock in Hinsdale to motocross racing, snowboarding and, of course, sharing in the family passion for cars. “He loves cars,” his father said with a tone of pride in his voice. Kalydeco improves the defective protein Dylan has. Specifically, it only works in people with the G551D mutation like Dylan, but the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation continues to fund research to find treatments for people with other de-

fective genes and ultimately, a cure. On May 9, during Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month, the foundation hosted its 10th annual Casino Chicago event at the Swissôtel in Chicago. It raised nearly $400,000, setting a new record. Dan Roesch has co-chaired the event since its inception. While he’s forever thankful for the opportunity Dylan was granted as one of just 1,200 patients who qualified to take Kalydeco, he is dedicated to continue giving back to the foundation until a cure is found. “It’s just cool that they’re trying to help out,” Dylan said of the fundraiser that drew in more than 700 guests. While he’s privileged to qualify for Kalydeco, Dylan realizes about 96 percent of those with cystic fibrosis don’t. “We need to get it approved to all other genes,” Dylan said.

Clarendon Hills Middle School takes part in ‘trial of the century’ By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com CLARENDON HILLS – It was the “trial of the century” May 7 at Clarendon Hills Middle School, as the “Big Bad Wolf” was formally charged for his crimes against several fairy tale characters, including Little Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs. “I’ve got nothing to say to the world and the world has nothing to say to me,” said eighth-grader Jack Moran, who portrayed the wolf. Students from all grades got together May 7 for its one-act play, “Big Bad.” Sixth grade language arts teacher Marie Bond led the production, but she said it’s mainly student driven as they’re the ones who bring the characters to life and provide the costumes. “Somehow every year it turns out perfect,” she said. “I think this is probably one of the best years where they really pulled it off. They did a really nice job.” This was the 11th anniversary of the one-act plays in which the kids begin production a month before showtime. Bond said the tryouts are right before spring break and then practices take place four days a week. “A lot of these kids are involved with violin or piano and they’re missing practic-

What also made “Big Bad” unique was that the audience acted as the jury and ruling was determined by applause. As it turned out, the Big Bad Wolf was found innocent on all charges. “Afterward, he asks his lawyers if they want to go out for some veal, and they say, ‘I thought you were a vegan,’ ” she said. For Bond, the final curtain its a bitter sweet moment because it means saying goodto me, I’ll sit in the back and crying because I’m so proud of bye to the eighth-graders. “Every year this happens watch and I almost feel like them,” she said.

Q-BBQ fires up big flavor in La Grange LA GRANGE – As we approached the black awnings of the corner restaurant, it was no surprise our mouths began watering when Q-BBQ’s old-fashioned smokehouse aroma wafted our way. We stepped inside and were greeted by a hostess at a wooden counter with three overhanging chalkboards outlining the restaurant’s specials, platters, sandwiches, salads and sides, extending from brisket and pork to smoked turkey, chicken, ribs and more. My companion and I initially were puzzled by some of the options, as neither of us had ever experienced Q before. When the hostess saw our hesitation, she immediately asked if this was our first visit, offered us free samples of the Brisket Burnt Ends, and then pointed out a few of her personal favorite dishes. After the sample, my mind was made up, and I selected the Brisket Burnt Ends sandwich served Q-Style, which calls for topping it with Q-Slaw, mozzarella cheese and sweet and spicy aioli. The sandwiches, along with two hush puppies, include your choice of a side. For me, it was an order of Spicy Fries. My fellow diner ordered the Texas Chopped Brisket sandwich, prepared Q-Style with Q-Slaw, crumbled bleu cheese and Carolina sauce. Once we’d ordered, we found our table and enjoyed the anticipation. In about 10 minutes, the massive culinary concoctions arrived. Before shamelessly stuffing our faces – an act which my companion rationalized as “if it’s not messy, it’s not barbecue” – we each grabbed handfuls of napkins and then dug in. The Q-Slaw and sweetand-spicy sauce on top of the Brisket Burnt Ends gave my sandwich a perfect mix of the barbecue flavor and Southern taste I’d been looking for. My Spicy Fries were served

From its enthusiastic, helpful staff to its relaxed yet welcoming atmosphere, those black awnings are not something you’ll want to pass by. And although from the outside, we didn’t anticipate a casual, order-atthe-counter type restaurant, both my companion and I left Q-BBQ happily satisfied and already planning to return.

Hinsdale Central’s Zaher ‘overwhelmed’ by title, Alexa Haff adds to resume

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – Anne Zaher expected to perform well in the 1,600-meter run finals at the Class 3A state track meet on Saturday. But the Hinsdale Central sophomore was still surprised when she won a tight race to bring home a state title from Eastern Illinois. “I knew I would be up with the front runners, but it was kind of surprising to win,” said Zaher, who posted a time of 5:00.08. “It feels really amazing that I did this. It’s really cool. “I’m just so excited that this happened. At the beginning of the day I was thinking I could win it all, so to do it is really overwhelming. It hasn’t sunk in yet.” Zaher was surrounded by runners in the middle of the pack early in the race, but steadily worked her way toward the front and held off Palatine’s Kelly O’Brien (5:00.50) and Fremd’s Ayako Higuchi (5:00.98) for the win. “I kind of wanted to start out more in the front, but the first couple laps I kind of got boxed in and had to get myself out of it and get back into the race,” Zaher said. “I had to adjust my strategy a little bit.” Zaher qualified for state last spring but didn’t make it to the finals. She had a plan for how to handle running on the second day of the state meet for the first time. “Focus on prelims, then worry about finals,” she said. “That’s what I did so I’m really happy that it worked out for me.”

Freshman Alexa Haff, who finished second at the cross country state meet in the fall, earned all-state honors as she finished sixth in the 3,200 run with a time of 10:50.36. “I just wanted to go out there and give it my all,” Haff said. “I was running with a great group of girls. It was great just getting to know them. It’s such an honor to be here, especially as a freshman. It’s just an exciting thing.” Haff said she never expected to have so much athletic success her freshman year, but she has definitely enjoyed it. “It’s been amazing,” she said. “I have to thank my parents for supporting me through everything. It’s really an honor. I feel really blessed.” In addition to Zaher and Haff, Madeline Sullivan (400 dash) and the 4x200 relay team of Morgan Serwat, Jennifer Thomson, Monica Bhagavan and Katie Sluman competed at state.

Hinsdale Central’s baseball team notched a big win on the eve of the postseason with a 3-0 victory against highly-regarded Lincoln-Way West on Tuesday. The Red Devils (18-16) had five hits in the game, three of which were doubles. Mike Johnson had two doubles and a run scored, and Ryan Haff had the other double and added a run. Max Peters drove in a run and Spencer Wawak scored a run.
