BURR RIDGE – The light may have gone out on Moondance Diner, but that dwindled radiance has now been replaced with a rising sun. Patti Mandersheid and her family had been going to the Moondance Diner in Burr Ridge for as long as they could remember, enjoying the breakfast and lunch options while getting to know the whole staff. “We joked the other day about being a restaurant family,” Mandersheid said. Like several residents in town, the news of Moondance closing in mid-March sent a shock wave to its regular customers and casual diners alike. That’s when Mandersheid’s family stepped into the restaurant business. After countless hours of work, Patti’s Sunrise Cafe, a restaurant with menu options comparable to Moondance, was ready to go and open for business May 9. The restaurant may have received a face lift with bright wallpaper, reupholstered booths, added menu options and new signs, but everyone from the Moondance staff is back, from the bus boys to the chefs. “That is what made us want to do this, because they were able to come here and just pick up where they left off,” she said. Patti’s Sunrise Cafe is truly a family project, as all four members contributed to its opening. Mander-

Breakfast is being served Wednesday morning at the newly opened Patti’s Sunrise Cafe in Burr Ridge. sheid’s husband, John, owns a company in Willowbrook and will hadle business operations along with her son, Matt Malusa, who will oversee finances. Additonally, her daughter, Lauren Malusa, is a graphic artist who designed the menu and sign. Matt Malusa, who is also a partner in the venture, said that living in Burr Ridge for a decade has tied the family into the community fabric, and they felt it was time to make a lasting impact in Burr Ridge. “It was just right place at the right time,” Malusa said. “If you asked us a year ago if we were going into the restaurant business we would’ve said ‘no.’”

He said the new breakfast and lunch restaurant is “everything that everybody loved before,” but with a “new twist.” The May 9 opening only came after hours of painting, installing the signs, reupholstering the booths, acquiring new appliances and dishes, redoing the bathrooms and the hostess area and changing the countertops.

Still, the family was thankful that they didn’t have to do any heavy duty construction, such as knocking down walls or redoing plumbing. “People have told us that putting this together in one month is unheard of and I think it really is a testament of everyone in this area that has helped us,” Mandersheid said. Now open, Mandersheid said its been “very busy” as word of mouth is spreading quickly on the new breakfast restaurant. “Each day I’m just surprised by all the traffic and it’s nice to see a lot of returning customers and familiar faces from the neighborhood,” she said. So far, all the customers the reviews have been positive and customers delighted to be greeted by the same staff by a the staff, according to Mandersheid. “I haven’t heard a negative thing yet,” she said. “It’s overwhelming.”

Mysterious waterfall officially named in local forest preserve By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com Tucked away in the dense foliage of Waterfall Glen is a man-made wonder few guests, even locals, know about. But in the Darien and Lemont area forest preserve, nature’s own handiwork even is more obscure.

“This one is pretty hard to find,” said Joe Kubal, as he traversed the preserve’s muddy path. “The natural one is not very well known.” The Naperville resident led the way to the only naturally made waterfall in DuPage County, one which just a year ago was such a mystery it didn’t have an

official name. Getting the naming rights to the waterfall was just part of a larger project Kubal and his colleagues, independent journalist Maria Traska of Oak Lawn and College of DuPage geography professor Keith Yearman, embarked on three years ago. “All three of us decided to

go on a little road trip down Route 66,” Kubal said. “And from that we decided to write a book about 66 from Joliet to Chicago, just that 44 miles, because it’s been overlooked.” As part of the project, Kubal, Traska and Yearman started researching Waterfall Glen when they came across the waterfall most associated with

the preserve. After talking with Forest Preserve District of DuPage County naturalist Jack MacRae, they were informed the waterfall wasn’t natural but constructed. “That waterfall was built in the 1930s by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) as part of

Hinsdale Central lifts suspension for student who wore AK-47-themed shirt By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – District 86 officials lifted the suspension of a Hinsdale Central student who recently wore a T-shirt with featuring an image of an AK-47. On May 12, senior Chris Borg spoke at a District 86 Board of Education meeting, attempting to expunge the suspension from his record and revise the dress code policy. Borg said on May 8 he was told the shirt – which has

an AK-47 riffle depicted, the words “Team AK” and a URL for Kentucky Armory Club – would have to be turned inside out or taken off. He also was given the choice to go home for the day. “I decided that I was going to go home for the day because I felt it was an infringement of my first amendment right to freedom of expression,” Borg said. According to the dress code policy, students are prohibited from wearing shirts deemed “vulgar, inappropriate, unsafe

or disruptive to the educational process (e.g. advertising/ display of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, sexual innuendo).” Borg said nowhere on the shirt does it say or depict violence. He also cited the Hinsdale Central mascot is a devil and carries a trident. “A trident is classified as a weapon, yet you don’t see people telling our baseball players or our football players to take off their jerseys just because they have a trident on them,” he said. District 86 Superinten-

dent Bruce Law said the district has a student handbook, which can be updated if needed according to provisions. One of those provisions states students cannot wear images of weapons, which was applied in this case. However, Law explained that after looking into this situation, it was understood the shirt was promoting a gun club, which is a lawful activity. But any shirt that promotes an illegal activity associated with guns, such as promoting violence, are still prohibited.

“Now what we’re saying is, because we want to make sure the teachers understand, violent representations, illegal representations, illegal activity including guns, are still prohibited, but it’s just too narrow to say any representation of a gun is prohibited speech,” Law said. “It’s not really the picture of the gun it’s the message that’s being sent,” he said. “If that message is, ‘I like this gun club in Kentucky,’ which is a lawful activity, that’s not a message we can really restrict.”

OAK BROOK – Police currently are investigating a commercial burglary that occurred at Lord & Taylor, 180 Oakbrook Center Mall, according to the Oak Brook Police Department. About 4:27 a.m. May 14, the Oak Brook Police Department responded to a report of an activated burglar alarm at Lord & Taylor. Upon arrival, officers determined someone forced entry to the store and stolen jewelry and watches, according to a news release from the Oak

Brook Police Department. The estimated value of the loss is in excess of $100,000, including more than 150 pieces of jewelry and watches. Store surveillance video shows three unknown offenders wearing masks and gloves, the release stated. This case is under investigation and no other information is available, the release stated. OAK BROOK – A south loop condominium developer and associates are among six defendants facing federal charges for allegedly engaging in a $22.8 million mortgage loan fraud scheme, according to a news release from the Northern District of

They are extremely dedicated and passionate about their work. The level of their experience and education is matched only by their desire for continuous improvement. They work to expand their knowledge and strengthen their skills to provide a deep and meaningful education for all students. Questioning D-58 stats On the Opinions page in the May 14 Downers Grove Suburban Life, James Eichmiller shares with us some feelings and findings of the District 58 Technology Program. He said student achievement approved as measured by the math testing. How do we know the improvement was caused by technology? Could good teaching have caused the gain? He then said collaboration, ownership, engagement, staff flexibility and choice also increased. Again, could good teaching have caused these improvements? I am not sure you can state that all of these gains are from a take-home technology program. I am not sure we can afford to give every student a device to use at school and at home. Our taxes are going up, we have pension obligations to meet and we need to show some type of fiscal restraint.

No need for library renovation in Lemont I am at the Lemont library on a regular basis for various reasons and agree with others who have written to Sound Off. I love our library and what it offers. But there is absolutely no need for remodeling, additional meeting rooms, computers, etc. Even the funds already spent for analyzing the “needs” was not necessary. The governing bodies of Lemont need to make more frugal decisions with our tax money. If you’re “looking” for ways to spend tax money, it could be better spent elsewhere in our community. I was at Lilacia Park this morning in Lombard, and a worker there was spraying the faded tulips (bloom was done) with Roundup (glyphosate). I asked why, and he said it helps them [helps restore color]. Is this really necessary? Do we have to have everything look perfect? Such a beautiful place seems natural, but then you learn they think they have to manipulate things with chemicals. Do we really need more chemicals in our ground, which eventually go into the waterways? Glyphosate has been linked to more than 20 adverse health effects, including birth defects, infertility and cancer.

So Kubal put together a proposal for the board and submitted it in May 2013. On April 10, 2014, he and the team received formal approval. That area now is known as Canyon Creek, Canyon Creek Falls, Canyon Creek Cascade and the west branch and east branch of Canyon Creek. “We actually named five little pieces of things all related to that same river,” he said. “You don’t get to name things much anymore.” Kubal said one downside to naming the area is by giving it a title, it opens it up to the public more than in the past. “We want to keep the area pristine and uncluttered from garbage,” he said. “People

This is a terrible financial decision. In my opinion, the next generation will be the “I hope” generation. • I hope that I can attend the same high-quality school that my siblings attended, with extraordinary teachers. • I hope we have small enough class sizes that I get the attention and help that I need. • I hope that our community doesn’t deteriorate because the quality of the district deteriorates. • I hope that if I choose to teach, I will be valued by my employers, earn a wage that will allow me to pay back my student loans, and secure a decent standard of living.

District 86 tax levy sets combative tone To the Editor: I was tempted to just sit back and watch the divisive mess School District 86 has become from a safe distance. After all, the last of my three children graduated from Hinsdale Central in 2012. My family has already benefited from our fine public schools and my children moved on to college well prepared. We moved here for the schools and things worked out really well for us.

86 board are angry taxpayers serving for the primary purpose of minimizing their property taxes. If their taxes are slightly lower, so are mine. But such a short sighted view is terrible for the community. Good schools directly benefit residents with school age children and also support property values community wide. This Board has proudly set a combative tone with the zero increase tax levy, which provides taxpayers minimal savings. Now they can take their self-inflicted empty pockets to the teacher’s contract negotiations. The Board is about to square off against (and insult) actual professional educators who spend every day with our community’s children. Will this lead to a positive environment for the district? I encourage the Board to negotiate in good faith with education as the primary goal. Hinsdale Central was a great experience for my family. I hope this can also be said by present and future Hinsdale Central families.

Former Blackhawk ‘pays it forward’ To the Editor: I want to thank 2010 Stanley Cup Blackhawk defenseman Brent Sopel for what he did Easter Sunday at Starbucks. Like many Sundays, after Mass at SIJ Church, we head to Starbucks with our family of seven. Like other customers before us in line at Starbucks, one by one, our family placed our orders for a drink, pastry or both. As we handed our Starbucks card to the cashier, she said smiling, “all orders are the treat of that man,” and she pointed to the man our family knows as Brent Sopel. Brent very graciously paid for many of us in Starbucks that Easter morning. Our family wishes to publically thank Brent for this kind gesture. Additionally, we want to let all others affected by his generosity that morning know who the very generous man was that Easter morning at Starbucks. Surely receiving this kind gesture will help others understand that the true message is to “pay it forward” some day!

CLARENDON HILLS – The Village of Clarendon Hills has announced the 2014 “Dancin’ in the Street” schedule and band lineup. Kicking off at 6:30 p.m. June 18 and running through July 23, the event started as a way to showcase the downtown and has grown to an annual tradition for residents and visitors alike. People of all ages are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair and pick a spot along Prospect Avenue. Bands will be expected to start at 7 p.m. and play until 9:30 p.m. As with prior years, Prospect Avenue from Park Avenue to the BNSF railroad will be closed to vehicular traffic from 4 to 10:30 p.m. Parking is available in the Metra commuter parking lot at the corners of Prospect Avenue and Ann Street. OAK BROOK – Airhart Construction recently announced plans to build houses on the five sites at its latest location, Dana Park Estates in Oak Brook, a private, gated cul-de-sac community situated near the southeast corner of Meyers Road and 31st Street. Airhart Construction will offer ranch and two-story homes from its medalist series, with several of the houses including first floor master suites. CLARENDON HILLS – A village’s public works department is like Batman in Gotham City: It’s not the most glamorous of jobs, things will assuredly get messy and the department only gets called upon when there’s trouble. But the Clarendon Hills Public Works department wouldn’t have it any other way. “If we’re in the background we prefer it that way,” said Clarendon Hills Public Works Director Mike Millette. “When you see us a lot then that means we’re out there to fix something and that’s bad.” On May 16, the department hosted an open house showcasing some of the machinery it uses, including its 3.5 ton salt trucks, bulldozer and utility vehicles. Guests also had the chance to tour employees’ “offices,” a running joke public

works staff uses to describe their vehicles. While public works may have been overlooked in the past, that changed after this winter when services were needed more than ever, not only from Clarendon Hills, but from all neighboring villages. “You think about the winter we just had, I guarantee that my guys spent hundreds of hundreds of hours at that office,” Millette said, pointing to the inside of the vehicles. Now, with spring in full swing, the department will monitor rainfall and begin public landscaping, according to Millette. But just because winter is over, that doesn’t mean work will slow down for the department, which is constantly working and getting dirty. “I remember one time back when I was working for Lombard, the air temperature was

Sushi House’s signature selections on a roll DOWNERS GROVE – Good sushi restaurants can be hard to find in the Midwest. It’s usually not a matter of technique, but freshness. Even the best restaurants can sometimes fall short because they don’t have access to high quality fish, obviously the key component in a dish that often consists of only raw protein, rice and seaweed. The Sushi House in downtown Downers Grove proves a worthy entry on the suburban sushi scene. Its interior hearkens very much to the classic sushi setting – serene design, occasional pieces of Japanese artwork on the walls, and the sushi chef station right at the center of the action. At a cursory glance, the menu is also fairly traditional – the typical, three- or four-ingredient basic roll, sashimi and nigiri on one side and the flashier rolls on the other. There also are a number of regular entrees, including a couple of intriguing bento box combinations. To experience the full gamut, our table ordered the lunch combination and one of the fancy rolls. The combo included a basic tuna roll and spicy salmon rolls, as well as a cup of miso soup. The tuna had good texture, but my preference was the salmon. It melted in your mouth, while a nice bite of cucumber added a refreshing crunch to the wrap. The spicy mayo was understated. Looking at the “signature rolls” part of the menu was overwhelming, but in the best possible way. I always feel a little intimidated by the depth of ingredient options at whatever sushi restaurant I am at – Sushi House’s 2011 Roll alone is topped with four different kinds of caviar. There always seems to be a hint of a dare contained in that half of the menu. As if the sushi place is saying, “You want to get your socks knocked off? Here’s the best we got. Try to not enjoy eating these rolls.”

Sushi House, nestled in downtown Downers Grove, offers a diverse menu of both basic and intricate sushi offerings, as well as several options for those who aren’t fans of raw fish.

Sushi House offers plenty of creative options, including the basic and delicious tuna roll. The Spicy Angel Roll was a delightful indulgence, marrying zesty fla- meaning Sushi House won that particular dare. vors with quality seafood. I decided to go with the Spicy Angel Roll. When it came to the table, I was appropriately impressed. When I put it in my mouth, I was giddy. The roll had it all – tempura shrimp, octopus, tuna, scallop and avocado. Inside was some of the spicy mayo I had wanted more of in the salmon roll, providing a creamy and lightly spicy base. Alongside the fish in the middle was a

small line of roe for a nice salty snap. On top was a sweet and smokey sauce and pickled jalapeño. All together, it came out hitting multiple levels of spiciness without overwhelming the seafood flavors. It was definitely the dish that drove me from contentedly full to stuffed, because I just needed to have those last two pieces. It completely elevated the meal from solid to very good,

Adding to the comfortable ambiance, the server was attentive without being pushy – stopping by to refill my water and take my order when I closed my menu. The restaurant also gets a special shout-out for having real pickled ginger, the spicy white version instead of the tame and tangy pinkish stuff most places put out. It’s a small thing, but makes a big difference. It also has a patio that looks amazingly appeal-

ing, and will only look better as the weather improves. All in all, Sushi House is a nice experience with good to very good food offerings. I would love to return and let the signature roll menu continue to bowl me over.

Hinsdale Central, Hinsdale South soccer both can win regional titles today

The sophomore scored three goal, all in the first half, to help lead Hinsdale Central’s girls soccer team to a 10-0 victory against Juarez in its playoff opener on Tuesday. “From coming off the bench and playing fewer minutes early in the the season to stepping up for us in the last two or three weeks, I was excited about her performance,” Central head coach Michael Smith said. “Her teammates recognized her quality and were looking for her in front of the goal. She’s been a huge player for us lately.” With the victory, Central improved to 12-5-1 overall and moved on to the regional championship game, which it will host at 5:30 p.m. today. In soccer maybe more than any other sport, a blowout victory against a lesser opponent can still be a realistic indication of how well a team is playing. Smith didn’t let his team look past Juarez, but he liked when he saw on the field during the course of play. “Our offensive shape was good and our forwards were moving off the ball, finding gaps in the defense and making quick decisions,” Smith said. Alison Cerny tallied two goals, while Lily Chetosky, Alix McArthur, Katie Murphy, Jenny Saviski and Meghan Schick scored one goal apiece. Smith was also pleased with the defensive effort by his team. “Our backs, they are definitely the backbone of our team and they are very organized,” Smith said of Chetosky, Christa Kuhlman, Maeve McLaughlin, Erin Smith and

The Hornets got a boost of confidence with Monday’s 13-3 win against Proviso East, and they played competitive softball in recent games against both Glenbard North and Peotone, a pair of No. 1 seeds in the playoffs that could advance to the state finals. If South can win its playoff opener, it would move on to the regional championship game on May 31.

Here’s the outlook for Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South.

Outlook: The Red Devils will be staff. Banke had a 5-1 record playoff tested when they open the postseason on May 30. Toward the end of the season, they faced Oak Park-River Forest and York teams in West Suburban Silver series. OPRF perennially is a strong team, and York went on to claim a share of the WSS title. Central took two of three games from Lyons Township, the other team that finished atop the WSS, and was also scheduled to face Downers Grove South, the West Suburban Gold champs, and Neuqua Valley before the playoffs started. Austin Butler (51 1/3 innings), Nick Senicka (38 2/3), Dan Teska (38 1/3) and Charlie Banke (34 2/3) have been the workhorses of the pitching

as of Tuesday. Strong pitching and defense will be the key to an extended playoff run. Central will need to cut down on the 56 errors it had committed through 31 games to find postseason success. Wheaton Warrenville South will counter with strong starting pitching. Offensively, the Red Devils have been strong all season and average 7.4 runs per game. Ryan Haff (six home runs, 35 runs, 24 RBIs), Matt Muellner (25 RBIs) and Jacob White (29 runs) have led the way, and Trenton Barnett, Matt Bruns, Mark Dykstra, Mike Johnson and Max Peters are all in double figures in both runs and RBIs.

A win in the playoff opener would send the Red Devils to the regional championship game on May 31, likely against No. 1 sectional seed Plainfield North.

The offense will need to step up in support of the pitching staff, and scoring runs has been an issue at times this season. Don Buonavolanto, Joe Oehmen, Mike Meyers, Dean Serritella and Brian Hoel will be key in that regard. South will have home-field advantage against Romeoville as it welcomes the Spartans for the regional quarterfinal game. With a win, the Hornets would then square off against a familiar foe in the regional semifinal on Wednesday – No. 3 sectional seed, regional host and undefeated WSG champ Downers Grove South.
