Illinois is facing a tumultuous time as General Primary Election Day quickly approaches. With an unemployment rate at 8.9 percent – the third highest in the nation, according to the U.S. Department of Labor – bringing jobs back to the state is a key issue for each of the Republican candidates seeking the congressional nomination in the 11th District. “The average person in the 11th District wants to have a job, get up and go to work every day, go to their kids’ soccer games and really live the American dream,” said candidate Chris Balkema. Balkema said he is pushing to return jobs to Illinois and the U.S., and one of the main ways to do that is to lower the corporate income tax rate “down to the mid 20s.” “We would see an amount of investment here in America that we haven’t seen in years,” Balkema said. Balkema is a sitting Grundy County board member and served on the Minooka Community High School District 111 Board of Education, but like the rest of the candidates, he comes from a business background as the purchasing manager of Caterpillar in Joliet. Republican candidate Bert Miller of Hinsdale was the president and COO of Phoenix Closures in Naperville from 1981 to 2013, and said he knows what it means to meet a payroll, balance a budget and create jobs. “The best way that we can help American businesses and those in the 11th District involves creating a sound economic climate and then getting government out of the way ... so job creators can do what they do best,” Miller said, “innovate, devel-

Darien to break ground on 75th St. construction By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com DARIEN – A $12.7 million construction project will start soon in Darien on 75th Street, between Adams Street and Plainfield Road, and on Cass Avenue, between 75th Street and Plainfield Road. The improvements constructed by the DuPage County Division of Transportation – which largely encompasses 75th Street – will widen the area between Adams Street and Plainfield Road, providing an additional lane in each direction and separating the lanes by a landscape barrier median. As a result, 75th Street will go from two lanes to three lanes in each direction. “During construction, there’s always going to be a little slower traffic because it’s not the normal lanes, so there will be some issues,” said Dave Heslinga, part of the design

The improvements will be built in multiple stages and preliminary construction could start in early March. Initial plans entail installing temporary traffic signals at major intersections and temporary pavement constructed in the existing medians. Two lanes of traffic in each direction on 75th Street will be maintained throughout the majority of the project, according to the DuPage County Division of Transportation. Construction is scheduled to be completed in November.

WILLOWBROOK – The Whole Foods in Willowbrook will soon be relocated from its 63rd Street location around the corner to the vacant Dominick’s building at Hinsdale Lake Commons. “We finally did get formal notification from the Whole Foods PR marketing specialist,” Willowbrook Village Administrator Tim Halik said. “After all the speculation [Allison Phelps, Whole Foods Market’s public relations specialist,] finally called us on Feb. 3 and said ‘yes, we did sign the lease with the management and will go into the Dominick’s store.’ ” After 72 Dominick’s vacated the Chicagoland area in late December, rumors surfaced as residents wondered which grocery would will the vacant store front near 63rd Street and Route 83. On Feb. 26, Regency Centers Corp., a national owner, operator and developer of grocery-anchored community shopping centers, formally announced the nearby Whole Foods signed the lease and will soon relocate. Whole Foods Market Public Relations Specialist Allison Phelps said the new location will “enhance shopper experience” for Willowbrook customers.
“On average, a new Whole Foods Market takes about 12 to 15 months from announcement to opening,” Phelps said via email. “Even a relocation takes that amount of time because it will take time to transform that building into the unique look and feel shoppers come to expect from Whole Foods Market.” Phelps said Whole Foods will be moving from 201 63rd St., as well as current employees, to around the corner “sometime in 2015” but could not give a more specific timeline. Halik said the timeline length for the move is “unfortunate” but was happy about the announcement. “I gather they’re going to open sometime in 2015,” he said. The current Whole Foods building on 63rd Street is about 38,000 square feet, while the size of the vacant Dominick’s is about 70,000 square feet, according to Halik. But Halik said that Whole Foods will only use a portion of the space, about 56,000 square feet. The remaining 14,000 square feet will be vacant for other users. “Every time, I’m in there it’s packed, so just from my own observation, I thought they could use a larger store in our area,” he said.

The students couldn’t have it explode inside the multipurpose room, so a video of the explosion was shown next to the project. “It took a while to get it to work because we had to do the right measurements,” 10-yearold Seymour said. Students in grades K-5 participated in Prospect’s fifth annual science fair Feb. 27, a fitting end to the school’s yearly science week. Dozens of students submitted projects for the science fair, attempting to answer questions like “does cold water freeze faster,” “does storage temperature affect popcorn popping” and “which material is the best conductor?” During the fair, students got a chance to practice presentation skills. “They do a great job, and when you walk around and look at all the work that they put into the boards and projects, they

Several other projects took a fun approach to varying scientific method. In fourth graders Parker Peterson and Katherine Fullerton’s “egg in a bottle,” a hardboiled egg rested at the top of a bottle. At first, nothing happened. The students then applied heat by dropping a match into the bottom of the bottle. “This makes lower pressure inside the bottle and greater pressure outside the bottle,” Peterson said. Increasing the temperature and pressure creates an external force and causes the egg to fall to the bottom of the bottle, Peterson said, to the delight of the crowd. During science week,

PIRCH unveils new Oak Brook Center space By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com OAK BROOK – Describing Oakbrook Center’s newest store PIRCH is no easy feat. On the surface, the 30,000 square-foot building on the east end of the mall appears to be a plumbing and appliance store. “The minute we say the words appliance and plumbing, people go like this and [hold their ears],” said PIRCH CEO Jeffery R. Sears. “Then we say, ‘yeah but you don’t understand, you have to see it to understand it.’ ” PIRCH executives take pride in differentiating themselves from their competition, describing their stores as hands-on, interactive showrooms that both educate and entertains customer. Throughout the store are working appliances like refrigerators and ovens, as well as running faucets and shower heads that customers can control with an iPad. “It’s hysterical if you come in here on a Saturday and just watch adults,” Sears said. “There’s some massive amazement with water faucets, like they’ve never seen them before. But I think it helps visually, and it has a real calming effect.” Unlike water faucets in other appliance stores, the faucets at PIRCH are mobile and magnetic, and guests can attach each faucet to a countertop to

Time to move forward with Keystone XL In his fifth State of the Union Address, President Obama pledged that 2014 will be a “year of action.” Through “pen and phone,” he vowed to sidestep Congress and advance policies to create jobs for Americans struggling to find work in a tough economy. But after 5 1/2 years, the Keystone XL pipeline – which would create thousands of American jobs and boost our weak economy – is still gathering dust on the president’s desk. All this time, President Obama has delayed the construction of the pipeline by claiming it would accelerate climate change. Recently, the president’s own State Department rejected that argument when they VIEWS released their final EnvironPeter mental Impact Statement, concluding that building the Roskam Keystone pipeline will have no significant effect on the climate. The comprehensive 11-volume report went further to say that if the pipeline isn’t built, oil will be transferred by much more environmentally risky means – train, tanker or rail – resulting in up to 41.8 percent more greenhouse gas emissions. The State Department’s report confirms that Keystone would create tens of thousands of jobs and move America closer to energy independence, making Keystone a win-win policy. An overwhelming percentage of Americans are in favor of building the pipeline, and support for the project is strong among the governors whose states the pipeline will go through. Right here in Illinois, manufacturers are strongly encouraging the approval of the pipeline. Steve Romanelli, owner of Core Pipe in Carol Stream supports the construction of Keystone not just because of the obvious benefits of having a more secure and reliable source of energy, but because of the role energy plays in our manufacturing workforce. Steve and many others believe that with approval of Keystone, the U.S. could see a manufacturing resurgence, because as Steve puts it, “the lifeblood of manufacturers is energy.” Shockingly, the president is still using every possible stall tactic to delay the pipeline’s approval. Fears are growing that he will even use a Nebraska court case over the pipeline’s route as his next excuse. It is clear that when President Obama said he will lead this “year of action” he just plans to continue with more of the same. The president must not delay another day on approving the Keystone XL pipeline that will create good-paying jobs at home and unleash our energy potential.

Republican governor primary: Bruce Rauner Illinois has big problems. Years of fiscal mismanagement and incompetent leadership have compromised the state’s economic future. Illinois’ five public pension systems are underfunded by more than $100 billion. The state ended 2013 with more than $7 billion in unpaid bills. Illinois’ credit rating has been downgraded five times since 2011, meaning taxpayers must pay much more in interest when the state borrows money. Moody’s Analytics predicted that Illinois will be dead last among all 50 U.S. states in job growth in 2014. It’s clear that those running state government have failed and change is long past due. On March 18, Republican primary voters have an opportunity to select the candidate they want to run against Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn in the November general election. State Sens. Bill Brady and Kirk Dillard are making a second run for the office. (Brady won the GOP nomination four years ago before losing a close election to Quinn.) Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford also is running, though his campaign has been rocked by sexual harassment charges leveled by a former staffer. Rounding out the field is businessman Bruce Rauner, whom we endorse. Rauner is not a career politician. In fact, this is his first run for public office. He supports term limits and, if he is elected, pledges to serve only two terms. groups who have helped to corrupt Springfield. He will not be afraid to stand up to the powerful public employee unions who have resisted change. His wealth was not given to him. He earned it during a lifelong career as an investor and businessman. Rauner is blunt when assessing the state’s many problems. Workers’ compensation is crushing businesses and an impediment to job growth. Despite a recent reform measure, public pensions are overly generous and unsustainable in the long term. The state’s tax system is unduly burdensome to both taxpayers and businesses and needs to be reformed. Rauner knows big changes need to be made to get the state back on the right path. Despite the many challenges, and the fact that whoever wins the governor’s seat more than likely will have to work with Speaker Michael Madigan, Senate President John Cullerton and a Democrat-controlled General Assembly, Rauner is confident he can get the job done. He has a genuine love for Illinois and a desire to improve the quality of life here. Rauner also knows his limitations. He admits that he himself doesn’t have all the answers, but he promises to surround himself with the best and brightest and work as hard as necessary to succeed, just as he has in his professional life. Rauner has the energy, the charisma and the financial backing to stand up to Quinn in the fall and win. In the Republican primary for governor, we endorse Rauner.

There is no reason why Downers cannot fill these holes. The county has taken care of filling the holes on county streets in Downers. What is the excuse that Downers has? HINSDALE – The Hinsdale Police Department announced Thursday it will be conducting special patrols this St. Patrick’s Day to crack down on drunk drivers. Unbuckled motorists also will be ticketed, according to a news release from the Hinsdale Police Department. Police will be particularly cognizant of drivers on the road after sundown, when seat belt use rates are lowest, according to the release. Designating a sober driver and not letting friends drive drunk are two crucial steps to help avoid an accident or an arrest for drunken driving, Deputy Chief Mark Wodka said in the release. The St. Patrick’s Day Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Crackdown is funded by federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
and administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety. St. Patrick’s Day is March 17.

The aquatics complex features a 12-foot diving well with 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards, a six-lane lap pool, a zero-depth splash area with an interactive water playground, a drop slide and multi-jet splash pad. This year, the Lions Park Pool will officially open for the 2014 season on May 24 and will remain open through La-
bor Day. Season pool passes will officially go on sale at the Community Center, 315 E. Chicago Ave., on March 17. • GROWTH Continued from page 3 jobs are the number one priority in Illinois and bringing businesses back is key. “Illinois is not that great when it comes to being business friendly from the taxing perspective and many businesses are upset with that,” Senger said. “I hear stories all the time where people are getting calls to say they are relocating to another state that’s a little more friendly to business.” Senger said what separates her from her opponents is experience, as she is a third term legislator. “That’s what you want in Washington,” she said. “You want someone that can take on and tackle the big issues and get something done, and I’ve done that.” Like fellow candidate Ian Bayne, Senger has been critical of the Affordable Care Act from the beginning. Bayne said the first initiative he would take to improve the business climate in Illinois is repeal the act. “It’s really that simple right now,” Bayne said. “There’s all kinds of things that can be done, but repealing Obamacare will get rid of the uncertainty because what
Obamacare is, it’s a Pandora’s Box. If you’re a business owner as I am, I don’t really know what’s going to happen next year.” Bayne said he’s no stranger to the political field, as a few years ago he was calling delegates and getting votes for Mitt Romney, who then went on to be governor of Massachusetts. But it’s his experience in the business sector that he said will lend well to a “failing” Washington. “The problem we have is we keep sending people to Washington who have never had to face financial diversity so how are they going to handle adversity in Washington?” he said. The winner of the General Primary will run against Congressman Foster, who each candidate said has a record of voting for higher taxes and raising the debt ceiling, and is doing little to improve life for residents in the 11th District. Foster is unopposed in the Democratic primary. A fifth candidate for the Republican race, Craig Robbins, withdrew his candidacy in February. Robbins said in a statement that while he remains dedicated to serving the community, he found it difficult to commit the necessary time.

Omega prepares your favorites to the letter DOWNERS GROVE – Everyone knows the best dinner food is breakfast food; there’s just something about eggs Benedict or juicy blueberry pancakes that hits the spot, especially late night. So when my fellow diner and I originally scanned Omega Restaurant’s menu, we thought we’d head straight for the breakfast section – that is, until we saw its fully stocked dinner menu. With gourmet burgers, more than a dozen different sandwiches, steak, seafood and other dishes to choose from, we spent about 20 minutes just deciding on what to order. We kicked off the dining experience with Omega’s Famous Greek Saganaki – a fried cheese dish and, in my opinion, the best decision of the night. The appetizer was brought to the table in a personal-sized skillet and then lit on fire in front of us. Giant flames spread across the saganaki, providing not only mouthwatering flavor, but a surprising show, as well. Although the menu had us pulled in many directions, it was the traditional breakfast section that claimed both our palates. My choice was the Denver Omelette – with cheese, ham, green pepper, onion and added mushroom – while my companion went with the Omega Skillet – a pan stacked with hashbrowns, onions, choice of sausage or bacon, melted cheese and two eggs any style. While I was completely satisfied with my football-sized omelette – to the point where some leftovers found a place in my fridge – there are a couple items on the menu I’m already planning on tasting next time. Omega’s Saganaki Omelette sounds like a cheesy and deliciously appealing way to combine our previous appetizer and meals. But my biggest goal for the next visit is to save room for dessert so I (and a few friends) can tackle Omega’s Famous Tummy Buster Ice Cream Sundae – a

Even though the food alone was enough to convince me, what really made a trip to Omega worth it, was its outstanding service and homey atmosphere. Our server was friendly, extremely attentive but not overbearing, and had all the answers to our questions. While effortlessly describing any item on the menu, she made suggestions and let us take our time before ordering. My water glass constantly was refilled, and we were even invited to take home the

The impressive staff added to Omega’s ambiance, with its cozy dining room, where the lighting was pleasantly dimmed. The venerable restaurant is celebrating its first anniversary since reopening last March, retaining favorite
elements such as the bakery, whose case is filled with desserts prepared in-house, including cakes, pies and pastries. Beer and wine also are available. All-in-all, with its tempting home-cooked fare, impeccable service and welcoming atmosphere, Omega is a perfect spot for a casual date night,
family night out, or just a relaxing evening with friends.

Ives scored six straight fourth-quarter points for the Red Devils to help lift them to a 63-47 win against Hinsdale South on Tuesday in a semifinal game of the Class 4A Naperville Central regional. “We had a lot of good efforts from a lot of different areas,” Central head coach Nick Latorre said. “I thought Thomas Ives played some big minutes for us in the fourth quarter. He had the tip in, he made his free throws and he was solid with the ball.” Matt Rafferty’s two free throws with 1:34 to go in the third quarter broke a

South (16-13) enjoyed a 35-30 lead when Larry Motuzis sank two free throws with 4:18 left in the third quarter, but then the Hornets went cold the rest of the game. “I think a few more shots on their side fell and a few on our side didn’t,” South sophomore Barret Benson said. “I thought it was a good, competitive game. We worked as hard as we could.” Central pulled away late by outscoring South 9-3 in the final two minutes of the game. “I thought we did great things in every quarter, but unfortunately we couldn’t string those great things together,” South head coach Brett Moore said. “We had a couple nice shots, and then we’d struggle to get something else.”

‘Fantastic day’ as Central swimmers earn state trophy By DAN SANTAROMITA

dsantaromita@shawmedia.com EVANSTON – The state boys swimming meet was tightly contested and Hinsdale Central left with plenty of awards. The Red Devils earned a state trophy for the second year in a row and picked up nine medals in Saturday’s finals, including top five in all three relays, at Evanston Township High School. “It’s a fantastic day,” junior Brian Portland said. “I couldn’t have hoped for anything more. It’s just an awesome day all around. Great swims from everybody here.” Portland was second in the 100-yard freestyle and competed in all three relays. The Red Devils were second in both the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay, and fifth in the 400 freestyle relay. The Red Devils racked finished third in the team standings with 108 points. Last year, Central finished as the state runner-up.

Portland went on to finish second in the state in that event. “Anything with a trophy is a fantastic day,” Portland said. “We didn’t come here with expectations. We just wanted to see what we could do.” What the Red Devils did was earn several all-state finishes. Freshman Franco Reyes made the finals in two races,
taking fifth in the 100 butterfly and sixth in the 100 breaststroke. “I didn’t expect to make two event finals,” Reyes said. “I was ranked 20th in the breaststroke and I came in sixth, which is a surprise. It was a good surprise.” Reyes is a part of a young Central squad that saw a lot of
success. None of the Red Devils to make it to Saturday’s finals in individual events will graduate this spring. Seniors Banistre Lienhart and Aneil Srivastava swam as part of Central relays. “It was a great experience training with seniors and juniors,” Reyes said. “All of them supported me throughout this whole year.” Adam Pircon was 11th in the 500 freestyle and Brian Powell was 11th in the 50 freestyle. Central had one of the more boisterous fan sections, which contributed to an already hectic atmosphere. “We had some of our friends leave at four in the morning to get here [on Friday],” Portland said. “Second
and third in the doors, I think they were. We couldn’t ask for better fans having a good time and cheering everybody on.”
Hinsdale South Junior Jason Yang represented the Hornets at the state swimming finals at Evanston High School last weekend. Swimming in the 100-yard backstroke preliminaries Feb. 28, Yang touched the wall with a time of 53.56 seconds to finish in 28th place overall.
Fenwick Zach Tieke, a Hinsdale resident and Fenwick senior, swam in four events at the state meet. Tieke earned state medals as the anchor leg on two relays. The 200-yard medley relay was sixth in 1:35.15 the 200 freestyle relay was 12th in 1:27.48. He swam individually in the preliminaries of the 50 freestyle (25th, 21.99) and 100 freestyle (48.02).
Lady Hornets win Road to Success Tournament The Lady Hornets seventh grade girls basketball team won two tournament titles as part of a nine-game winning streak to end their season. Most recently, the Lady Hornets won four games in a little less than 24 hours to claim the title at the Neuqua Valley Road to Success tournament held Feb. 15 and 16. The squad had victories against teams from Kaneland, Naperville, Yorkville and Plainfield on the way to the tourney title. Prior to that, they won the Super Bowl Shootout at Wheaton Christian Feb. 1. The Hornets finished the season with a 23-9 record. The team was comprised of players Jaylyn Grant, Sammy Guido, Emily Koziol, Kate Kulpinski, Brigid LoConte, Francesca Markos, Andrea Nkansah, Jenny Paskvan, Jenna Suda and Claire Zipsie. The Illinois High School Association recently announced adjustments to its multiplier rule for private schools that should impact the class that some area programs compete in for the state playoffs. The new rule, called the Success Advancement Component by the IHSA, will move teams up a class if they win at least two state trophies during a four-year period. The new rule will take effect starting with the 2014-15 school year. This won’t have any impact on teams that are already competing in the highest class or sports that have just one class such as tennis, water polo, swimming and boys volleyball. Football, which has the most classes of any IHSA sport with eight, will have a slightly different take on the rule: • Starting with the 2015 season, schools would be moved up two classes if they made three state finals during a four-year period. • Starting in 2016, schools would be moved up three classes if they make four state finals in a row. This means Montini football will move up to Class 6A

in 2014 and, if the Broncos do not make a title game in 2014, they will be Class 7A in 2015. If they make a state title game in 2014, they would go all the way up to 8A the next season. Downers Grove North’s Costello leads turnaround By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – It makes sense that Sarah Costello is holding the lone basketball in Downers Grove North’s girls basketball team photo. The Trojans had several standout players this season, but with Costello leading the way on and off the floor, they had their best season in years. North claimed its first West Suburban Silver conference title and won a regional title for the first time since the mid90s. Costello, the Suburban Life all-area team MVP, was the heart and soul of the team. “Sarah was definitely the biggest leader on our team,” sophomore guard Jaida Green said. “She was always able to pull us together. She played with so much heart, especially this season, and it was kind of contagious. When she would get excited, we all fed off that.” Of all the standout performances she has had in a fouryear varsity career, Costello may have saved her best for her final two high school games. She scored 28 points and grabbed 18 rebounds as the Trojans edged York in the regional championship game, then she scored 12 of her teamhigh 19 points after halftime while pulling down 13 boards in a season-ending loss to Batavia in a sectional semifinal game Feb. 25. “She just refused to lose,” North head coach Stephan Bolt said of Costello’s effort against Batavia. “She just wasn’t ready to be done yet, right down to the end [against Batavia]. I’m sure if we say right now let’s lace them up and play again, she’d go do it in a heartbeat.” Watching Costello play, it was difficult not to come away impressed. She displayed terrific shooting range (44 3-pointers, second on the team), but

was also confident with the ball in her hands driving to the hoop. She was a lockdown defender who finished second on the team in points per game and was the team’s leader in rebounds. She was only 12 rebounds away from averaging a double-double for the season. There doesn’t seem to be a weak spot for the University of Indianapolis recruit. “She can rebound, she can pass and she can shoot, and those are skills she’s honed over her career,” Bolt said. “She made it her goal to get better in every aspect, and she did that over the course of four years.” Of all the staggering statistics, Costello might be most proud of her team-leading 149 assists, a sign of her strides as a leader on the floor. “Just being more of a leader and being more vocal on the court, and being able to be a point guard and direct traffic and help everyone out,” Costello said. On a team that had just three other seniors (Paula Gutierrez, Colleen Honn and Sydney Huggins), Costello also did her part in helping instill a winning mindset on a team that should have several key pieces returning. “I’m just proud of how we all came together. Every game we were always there for each other,” Costello said. “We just have a new mindset at Downers Grove North and we all know that now. School: Bolingbrook Year: Senior Impact: The Raiders were a different team this season thanks to a coach and several players leaving the program. This guard and Pittsburgh recruit stepped into a larger leadership role and was also the leader of the team’s offense.
School: Westmont Year: Junior Impact: One of the Sentinels most experienced varsity players coming into the season, this guard was a confident ball-handler who used her shooting range to average a teamhigh 13.5 points per game. Was named Interstate Eight all-conference.
School: Downers Grove North Year: Senior Impact: The unquestioned leader for North, the University of Indianapolis-bound guard was a stellar defender and put up big numbers across the board at 13.3 points, 9.6 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 3.6 steals per game.
School: Benet Year: Junior Impact: Even at 5-foot-9, this guard had no qualms about getting physical with opponents. But the East Suburban Catholic all-conference selection had a well-rounded game and averaged over 14 points per game and hit 78 percent of her foul shots.
School: Downers Grove North Year: Sophomore Impact: With a well-rounded offensive game, this 6-foot-1 guard led the Trojans in scoring at 15.9 points per game. The two-year varsity player was named West Suburban Silver all-conference.

School: Lemont Year: Senior Impact: This senior has been a mainstay on the court for the Indians throughout her high school career. This winter, Jerantowski led the team in scoring at around 10 points a game and also topped the squad in steals and assists.
School: Hinsdale South Year: Sophomore Impact: This guard went from being a role player last season to being the Hornets’ top player this winter. Confident with the ball in her hands, she was just as comfortable spotting up from long range as grabbing a defensive rebound and going coastto-coast for a layup.
School: Hinsdale Central Year: Junior Impact: Central head coach Tom McKenna has coached eight all-state players in his career but calls Rush the best he has ever had. It’s easy to see why. The West Suburban Silver all-conference pick tallied 20.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.
