1. Lord Quenneville What happened: Hinsdale resident and Chicago Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville brought home another Stanley Cup, the second one in four years. Hinsdale residents celebrated by toilet papering his house and rejoicing when he brought it to Hinsdale’s Fourth of July parade. Quote of note: “I was fortunate that the Cup was in [Hinsdale] that day and I was able to bring it to the parade. It was a great parade. There was a nice turnout and there was a lot of enthusiasm from everyone.” – Joel Quenneville

2. Dillard for governor What happened: State Sen. Kirk Dillard, R-Hinsdale, announced his plans to enter the Illinois gubernatorial race in July after 18 years serving in the Legislature, currently in the 24th District. The assistant Senate Republican Leader is one of four GOP candidates. Quote of note: “I’m proven, I’m tested, I’m the one Republican that I believe can actu-

Changing of the guard What happened: H i n s dale High School District 86 opened a brand new bag after April’s school board election when the “Friends for District 86” slate, which included Claudia Manley, Ed Corcoran and Victor Casini, replaced three outgoing members, including former School Board President Dennis Brennan. Shortly after, Casini became school board president, but then resigned in early July, prompting Vice President Manley to take over presidential duties. Later that summer, Superintendent Nick Wahl resigned, and Bruce Law was named the new superintendent in October. The hiring and changes in administration continued as on Dec. 16 Mark Kolkman was named principal at Hinsdale Central, and Hinsdale South Principal Brian Waterman accepted the principal position at Lyons Township High School. Quote of note: “I found it impossible to devote adequate time to this position, to do a sufficient job and at the same time stay employed at my other job.” – Victor Casini

4. Case closed What happened: A Darien family earned a measure of closure when the two men responsible for killing three family members were sentenced. Johnny Borizov was sentenced to life behind bars after a jury in May found him guilty on three counts of first-degree murder and one count of solicitation of murder for orchestrating the murders of the Kramer family. Jacob Nodarse, the man who carried out the murders, was sentenced to 75 years in prison without parole. See STORIES, page 4

5. April showers What happened: A storm of epic proportions April 17 and 18 waterlogged the area, causing evacuations, power outages and streets closures for days due to flooding. The flooding led to the discovery of a body in the Salt Creek at Graue Mill. Quote of note: “At one point, we were trying to get another boat and we actually put a request on Twitter. Isabella Lorenzini finished runner-up in the singles bracket to lift Central to a share of the team state crown. Kenneth Li shot one stroke out of first place to lead the champion boys golf team. 8. Cancer center construction What happened: In September, the Hinsdale Village Board voted unanimously to approve a new Adventist Cancer Institute to be constructed at Ogden Avenue near I-294. The 54,000-squarefoot center is estimated to cost $48 million and is scheduled to open in 2015. The center will include 21 examination rooms, where patients can visit with their doctor or consult with a surgical oncologist. It will also house two linear accelerators, designed to target cancer tumors while minimizing radiation exposure to healthy skin, and include other amenities for cancer patients. 9. District tax freeze What happened: The District 86 Board of Education voted in favor of a flat levy for Fiscal Year 2015. Met by opposition from residents and almost half the school board, the district will now collect the same amount from taxpayers next year, about $72.6 million. Quote of note: “At this point someone has to say we have to take a deep breathe, and just stop for at least one year and live within our means.” – School Board President Claudia Manley

10. Dominick’s done What happened: Parent company Safeway is looking for competitors to buy all 72 Dominick’s locations, including the one at 6300 Kingery Highway in Willowbrook. DIXON – Shaw Media announced Monday that it has agreed to acquire the assets of The Herald-News in Joliet from Sun-Times Media. The purchase is expected to close during the first week of January. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Herald-News has been serving Joliet, Will County and Grundy County communities for more than 150 years and will continue as part of Shaw Media’s newspaper group. “We are excited to bring The Herald-News into our established, and growing, family-owned media portfolio,” Shaw Media President John Rung said. “We expect to maintain the storied tradition of serving the Joliet region with a high-quality, community-oriented newspaper.” “We have found a great

dciamprone@shawmedia.com DARIEN – For the past six years, Principal Brian Waterman has not only been a popular figure at Hinsdale South High School, but also in the community as a member of the HCS Family Services Board. But starting in July, Waterman will replace the retiring Dave Franson as principal at Lyons Township High School for the 2014-15 school year. Waterman was approved by the District 204 Board of Education on Dec. 16 after being selected from a pool of 50 applicants.

Ciamprone: How tough of a decision was it to leave Hinsdale South High School? Waterman: It was definitely

long thought process, but I just looked at LT as a wonderful opportunity and I’m just really excited, but certainly I will miss Hinsdale South dearly. It’s a great community with great students, great parents, a wonderful faculty and staff, so it’s one of those bittersweet things where I will miss Hinsdale South, but I’m really excited about moving over to Lyons Township.

OAK BROOK – A 19-year-old woman died after falling off a work truck onto the roadway Sunday in the area of 22nd Street and Clearwater Drive, according to an Oak Brook Police Department news release. The woman was unresponsive and lying in the road when the Oak Brook police and fire departments responded to the scene at about 1 p.m. She was transported to Elmhurst Hospital where she later died, the release said. Police said the woman worked for a contractor responsible for removing snow and ice for a nearby business property. The driver of the truck, who reported the incident and remained on the scene, was questioned and released without charges. “It’s really just a very tragic accident,” said officer Ben Kadolph.

Residents were divided as the Hinsdale High School District 86 board considered approving a flat property tax levy. But instead of just complaining about the issue behind the scenes, nearly 30 residents turned out for last week’s board meeting to voice their opinions and concerns before the board’s final vote. Regardless of which side prevailed, it’s important to see residents taking action in matters that affect their community. It’s been a privilege to serve your communities this year. I think we’ve really developed, and it was here well before I got here and hopefully it will be here long after I leave, but we have a really collaborative administrative team and a really collaborative staff. Our staff, we really connect with students at all levels. As a building, we do a wonderful job of building positive connections with students, and we do a great job of challenging them. Our advanced placement success over the last five or six years is really unprecedented. We administered almost 1,300 exams last year at Hinsdale South and for a school our size that’s remarkable.

My dad and mom are making me do chores around the house. My dad signed me up for a class at the library. He’s making me do homework to prepare for it. Today is Saturday, my first day of break and I’ve been working for hours. I don’t think it’s fair considering that I’m on break. My mom and dad have time off work. When do I get to enjoy the holiday? Ciamprone: Do you have any favorite memories from South? Waterman: Honestly just working with, interacting with, seeing the students every single day. Whether it be in the hallways, during lunch periods, during athletic events or the concerts. It seems like that really makes the school a special place.

Ciamprone: Do you plan on staying active in the Hinsdale community? Waterman: Yeah, I’m a member of the HCS Family Services Board, and my initial plan right now is to stay with that organization. I think they do a lot of great things in the community.

Ciamprone: Was this job at LT on your radar for a while? Waterman: I’m not sure when they posted it, but I saw it as a posting earlier this fall.

Ciamprone: What attracted you about the job? Waterman: Just everything. It’s such a wonderful community. As I said at their board meeting [Dec. 16] they just have all the ingredients of a successful school community, which is great students, great staff, great parents and great community support. I love the tradition. That’s one thing that kind of stuck out to me over the last six weeks of the interview process. There’s just such an incredible amount of tradition associated with Lyons Township and [I’m] really looking forward to being a part of that.

Tom Shaw’s replacement as publisher of Suburban Life Media would begin immediately. Ben Shaw has been with Shaw Media since 2004. He was named IT Director in 2006 and assumed responsibility for digital operations in 2010. Ben Shaw now will lead technology efforts across the company. He also will develop and maintain the infrastructure necessary to support Shaw’s efforts in digital media and will spearhead the launch of a database marketing program.

Old Town Pour House comes to Oak Brook OAK BROOK – Old Town Pour House proclaims beer a staple of life. The restaurant-bar backs that up once you step inside the new Oak Brook eatery. Nestled in an expansive storefront underneath Neiman Marcus inside the upscale Oakbrook Center, Old Town Pour House gives shoppers a cozy wind-down over a cold brew and American cuisine. The restaurant opened on the east side of the shopping mall in late November, making it Old Town Pour House’s second location, as the owners ventured west from their popular Chicago location. The exterior screams modern with its bold signage and contemporary outdoor fireplaces. Inside, it’s the same story, with a mix of tables and booths surrounding a bar with a good number of flat-screens. A companion and I dined at Pour House on a recent holiday shopping night. Picking up the menu, we discovered that beer selections practically outnumber food options three to one – a good thing in my book. From ciders to lagers to wheats, there are plenty of unique craft selections to pair with your meals. The full bar boasts about 90 taps. My date and I kicked off the experience with a pair of tasty appetizers – the Firecracker Rolls under the “Bar Bites” portion of the menu, and the Truffle Mac N Cheese under “Shareables.” Our waitperson assured us both sections of the menu are essentially shared plates. The Firecracker Rolls are a spicy mix of Cajun chicken, a vegetable medley and avocado cream. It’s definitely a spicy dish – have a beverage handy – but the avocado cream was a nice cool-down. The Truffle Mac N Cheese was the favorite dish of the night at our table. With Parmesan breadcrumbs and black truffle, accented by smoked bacon tidbits, it was anything

For our entrees, my date, readying for some post-meal shopping, opted light for the Pour House Chopped Salad. The salad is a fresh-made combo of marinated grilled chicken, romaine lettuce and a host of other ingredients. The sweet-and-sour tarragon dressing was a great touch; you may want to ask for extra. I opted for the Pour House Burger. The Angus beef patty was topped with aged white cheddar and a pair of beer-battered onion rings on a Portuguese bun. It was a solid burger complemented nicely with olive-oil-parsley fries. Other menu options extend to five additional salad selections, including the Seared Tuna Nicoise Salad and the BBQ Smoked Chicken Salad, a trio of soups and five dinner entrees ranging from Miller Farms Chicken to Cedar River Strip.

Will it be Rodgers or Flynn behind center? Hub Arkush

This week, we have two matchups to preview: The Bears versus the Packers with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, and the Bears versus the Pack with Matt Flynn behind the wheel. My best guess is it will be Flynn irrespective of what’s at stake. Reports from late last week are that Rodgers never was close to being medically cleared, so it’s hard to imagine he will make that much progress for the Bears game. The only thing that’s certain is we won’t know until late in the week, if before Sunday at all. With Rodgers, you’re talking about the best quarterback in the game, and one of the best ever. The Packers are capable of beating you with the pass or the run, and Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Jarrett Boykin and, perhaps,

even Aaron Quarless all become weapons you have to scheme for. If it’s Flynn at quarterback, the Bears will focus their attention on stopping Eddie Lacy, James Starks and Nelson, and then trust individual defenders to make plays against the rest while the defense tries to force Flynn to make a play to beat them. Don’t think for a minute that Flynn can’t beat you. He’s very comfortable in Mike McCarthy’s offense and just fine reading defenses, going through his progressions and knowing when to quit on a play to fight another day. But he has nowhere near the cannon Rodgers does nor can he command that kind of accuracy. Keep Flynn in third-and-long, and he’s unlikely to beat you. The Packers are top five or top 10 in almost every offensive category, regardless of the quarterback, except avoiding interceptions and allowing quarterback sacks. There, it makes a difference who’s under center. Rodgers has thrown four intercep-

tions and has been sacked 18 times in 251 attempts. Flynn, Scott Tolzein and Seneca Wallace have thrown 10 interceptions and have been sacked 24 times in 280 attempts. Flynn has seven of those picks and 17 sacks in 166 attempts. Regardless of which quarterback it is, the story of this game for the Bears’ defense figures to be their 32nd-ranked run defense versus Lacy and Starks. With Flynn at quarterback, the Bears will pack seven, eight or even nine in the box on most plays. Lacy is dynamic at getting to the second level, but not a huge threat to outrun anyone in the secondary or go all the way. Defensively, the Packers have been a huge disappointment this year and are more likely to be the reason whether the Bears win the NFC North than Rodgers’ injury. After their best outing of the year versus Atlanta in Lambeau three weeks ago, Dallas and Pittsburgh have scorched them the past two weeks. They had no answers

for the Steelers’ Le’Veon Bell last week, and Matt Forte should have a big day. After a fast start to the season, B.J. Raji and Ryan Pickett have been ineffective up front, and the loss of Johnny Jolly for the season with a neck injury has been huge as he was playing the best football of his career. Clay Matthews and Nick Perry are back from injury at the outside linebacker spots, but neither is rushing the quarterback the way they are capable, and A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones inside are not as stout as they need to be against the run. Tramon Williams and Sam Shields have been inconsistent, at best, on the corners, making the occasional big play but struggling in coverage often. That matchup with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery is potentially another big edge for the Bears. Morgan Burnett and M.D. Jennings are serviceable safeties, but Burnett has failed to make the leap to perennial Pro-Bowler the Packers envisioned.

In a perfect world, you have been crowned as your league’s fantasy football champion. More likely, however, it’s wait until next year. In either event, I hope you had fun playing fantasy football this year. I also hope that this column, perhaps, provided you some not-terrible advice, at least once in a while. If nothing else, there were quite a few fantasy surprises in 2013. Ray Rice was a consensus first-rounder, as was CJ Spiller. No one expected Peyton Manning to be a bum, but I don’t recall much talk about him shattering the single-season touchdown passes record, either. It was a wild season.

This week, we recognize the best 2013 fantasy players with a Fantasy Dream Team and an All-First-Round Team (the top 12 fantasy players, regardless of position).

Spotlighting Hinsdale Central fall sports By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com The winter sports season at Hinsdale Central is in full swing, but it’s not too late to reflect on a solid fall sports season for the Red Devils. Central claimed state titles in three sports, the football team produced a record-setter as it made it back to the playoffs, and the boys soccer team enjoyed a season to remember. Here are some of the biggest highlights listed in no particular order.

1. Football fights into playoffs The injury bug hit early and often for the Red Devils, who lost starting quarterback Chase Hamilton in a Week 3 win over York. Central dealt with several other injuries throughout the season, but battled through to make it back to the postseason for the third straight year. Hamilton returned for the playoff opener against Owsego, which coincided with Michigan-bound receiver Ian Bunting having his best game of the season. The one constant through it all was running back Ben Stefani, who rushed for 940 yards and nine touchdowns on the season and set a program record for carries in a game when he ran 42 times against Oak Park-River Forest.

2. Home of champions Most schools would be overjoyed to win one state title in a school year. Central captured three in the fall season alone. Led by all-state finishes from seniors Billy Magnesen, Kevin Huang and TJ Caveney, the boys cross country team scored 99 points to beat out conference-rival Downers Grove North (144).

Isabella Lorenzini played for a state singles title and Danielle Burich and Erika Oku finished fifth in doubles play as the girls tennis team shared the state title with Lake Forest. Singles player Sophia Haleas and the doubles team of Ruglie Valiunaite and Katie Lee also posted winning records at state.

3. Soccer success Fourteen wins in a season is pretty good for any soccer team. Hinsdale Central had that many wins via shutout,

including two at the start of the playoffs as the Red Devils claimed the regional title. They also outscored their West Suburban Silver foes 24-2 to claim the conference title. The team, which went 20-1-2 on the season, was recognized for its on-field success by being nationally ranked, and was recognized as one of the top teams in the country academically.

4. Freshman sensation Alexa Haff is still a freshman in school, but she ran more like a seasoned veteran during the cross country season. She won the West Suburban Silver conference race in dominant fashion, won the regional race by nearly 20 seconds, and took the sectional title by nearly

40 seconds. She capped off her debut season by finishing second at state with a time of 16:45, just two seconds back of the winner.

5. Diving into success Junior Margaret McCarthy had a successful postseason in the pool. She won the

diving competition at the Lyons Township sectional with a score of 489.05, one of six sectional titles and nine state berths for the Red Devils. At the state meet the following week, she was the lone Central competitor to medal as she finished fifth with a score of 404.40.

Hornet athletes compile highlight moments

A one-time backup quarterback made a statement as a starter, two cross country runners fared well at the state meet, and a pair of golfers made it from tough regional tournaments to sectional play. Here are some of South’s biggest fall sports highlights.

1. Regan relishes starting role Robbie Regan wasn’t South’s starter at quarterback when the Hornets started the season; but when Jake Czajkowski was hampered by an injury, Regan moved into the starting role. With the junior under center, the Hornets won three straight games, beating Proviso East, Addison Trail and Leyden, in the middle of the season and were in competition for the West Suburban Gold title heading into the season finale against Downers Grove South, listed in no particular order.

2. Solid state duo Juniors Sarah Leganski and Victoria Salazar paced South’s girls cross country team all season, and nothing changed in the postseason. At state, Leganski placed 35th out of 210 runners with a time of 18:30, and Salazar was right on Leganski’s heels in 53rd place with a time of 18:58. Both ran their best times of the postseason at state. The week prior, Leganski was 10th in the Wheaton Academy sectional in 19 minutes while Salazar placed 16th in 19:13.

3. Conference just the start Brian Strumillo was just getting warmed up at the conference tournament. The senior golfer took home the title at the West Suburban Gold tournament one week, then followed that up with a regional title the next week. Going against some of the

He carded five birdies during his round at Prairie Bluff Golf Course in Lockport.

4. Dynamite golf duo Competing at the Class AA Lemont regional tournament, girls golfers Samantha Buddig and Kailey Hoel faced some of the state’s best and excelled. Buddig’s 84 was the lowest score among individual sectional qualifiers, and Hoel moved on to the sectional as a sophomore with her score of 97. Buddig fared much better with a state tourna-

ment-qualifying score of 75 at the sectional, and the senior wrapped up her high school career in fine fashion, tying for 44th in the state with a two-day score of 164.

5. Toney takes the field The football team had high hopes for senior running back Arian Toney, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards his junior year. Unfortunately, Toney suffered a foot fracture just before the season and was sidelined a majority of the year as he recovered. Though not at 100 percent, Toney did return to game action by the end of the campaign and ensured his high school career came to a close on the field as opposed to the bench.

Don’t peel it When you remove the peel or skin from fruits and vegetables, you lose a lot of nutrition — it’s a concentrated source of fiber, vitamins, minerals and potentially beneficial phytochemicals. Here are some facts you might not know about peels, from the University of California, Berkeley Wellness Letter: 1. Vegetable peels or skins are particularly good sources of insoluble fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Some peels, notably apple, are rich in pectin, a soluble fiber that helps lower blood cholesterol and control blood sugar. 2. Apple peels may help prevent cancer. Lab research has found that whole apples have a much greater effect on cancer cells than peeled ones, probably because of the antioxidants in the skin. 3. Potato skins have far more fiber, iron, potassium and B vitamins than the flesh. Potato skins are also rich in antioxidants. 4. You don’t need to wash fruits and vegetables in soap — plain water is fine. It will remove nearly all dirt, as well as bacteria and some pesticide residues, if any are present, on the surface. Scrub firmer produce like potatoes with a vegetable brush. The wax on fruits and veggies is harmless.

Onion Crumb Brussels Sprouts Casserole Serves 12. • 1/2 cup Country Crock Spread, divided • 2 cups chopped onions • 3/4 cup panko bread crumbs • 8 cups cooked Brussels sprouts (or thawed frozen), halved • 1 cup fat-free half and half Preheat oven to 375 F. Melt 4 tablespoons Country Crock Spread over medium-high heat in large nonstick skillet and cook onion, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, about 8 minutes. Add crumbs; cook, stirring until lightly toasted, about 2 minutes; remove to bowl. Melt remaining spread in same skillet. Add Brussels sprouts; toss. Stir in half and half and 1/2 the crumb mixture. Pour into shallow 2-quart baking dish. Sprinkle with remaining crumb mixture. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until bubbly around edges.

These are virtually-can’t-go-wrong combinations, so whatever you choose to use can’t help but

Stuffing Stuffed muffins: Stuffing doesn’t always need to be stuffed into something. It can make quite a statement on its own. Fill either regular-sized or minimuffin trays with cooked stuffing and bake or form it into loaves. Or stuff the stuffing, by placing a surprise, like a prune or a green olive, in the middle of a stuffing muffin. Main course: Stuffing can function as a surprising course, rather than its usual side dish status. Substitute seasoned, dry stuffing mix for the bread, or along with it, in your favorite bread pudding recipe for a kick.

Ham or turkey New glaze: Give your glaze a fresh outlook, and create an innovative meal theme at the same time. For Hawaiian ﬂair, for instance, glaze with a syrup you’ve created as it reduces while you are stirring on the stovetop from coconut milk, pineapple juice, freshly ground black pepper and cayenne pepper. Turn it into a theme by adding chopped macadamia nuts and fresh pineapple chunks to your side dishes and a drizzle of bottled guava, papaya or mango nectar to your pumpkin or apple dessert pie before baking. Then, top it with sprinkles of sweet-

ened coconut flakes just before serving. Gravy upgrade: As good as they are, gravies and sauces are often bland. Why not perk them up a bit as they heat. Consider adding just a dash of strategic flavor, like cayenne and chopped jalapenos (experts recommend wearing latex gloves and not touching your eyes during or after handling peppers); finely diced garlic and pumpkin pie spice; or peach jam or allfruit, no-sugar spread (also available in the jam aisles of most supermarkets) and curry powder.

Sweet potatoes Baked buffet: Instead of a casserole, consider baking sweet potatoes to serve to guests individually, along with a buffet of toppings, such as honey, pure maple syrup, mini marshmallows, composed butters (like those to which you’ve added freshly chopped herbs or spices) or a mixture of diced dried fruit like cranberries, golden raisins, apricots and figs. Standout substitute: Mix in or substitute sweet potatoes for pumpkin in a dessert pie or muffins. Sweeten a sweet potato puree (made from the flesh of peeled sweet potatoes) with honey or brown sugar, warm it and use as a dessert topping for vanilla ice cream that you then top with

browned, melting mini marshmallows and toasted walnuts.

Pumpkin or apple Cozy cocktail: Consider a toast with mini pumpkin or apple smoothies (or a combination of both) during appetizer time or to start off the meal. In a blender, to vanilla soymilk, add a dash of canned pumpkin pie filling or apple pie filling, banana, pumpkin seeds, candied pecans and ice. Blend until smooth. Side surprise: Add minced, unpeeled pumpkin or apple to your stuffing or green bean casserole before cooking, as well as a sprinkling of pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon and crushed graham cracker crumbs. The same additions can be made to a mixed green or spinach salad if you cube and roast the pumpkin first. (Apples, of course, can be used raw.) You can serve it warm on top of the salad for a wilted effect, or let it cool first. Drizzle with roasted pumpkin seeds and poppy seed-based salad dressing, or raspberry vinaigrette.
