throughout the building. “We’ve gone extensively through the building and cleaned 90 percent of it,” said Edward Smith, project manager with SERVPRO. Mark Ravanesi, president of IES, said there are three things mold needs in order to grow: something to eat (drywall, ceiling tile, etc.), the right temperatures and moisture. “In a school you can’t eliminate the first two, so the big

thing is keeping moisture out of the building,” he said. Yvonne Mayer, parent of a middle school student and former board member, said the mold problem was not just the result of the recent polar vortex or the bursting of the pipes, but rather has existed for some time. “This is simply unacceptable,” Mayer said. “Your job now is to reopen the schools

CHMS and HMS students start split schedule By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Hinsdale Middle School may be closed, but that hasn’t stopped students from having to attend class. The District 181 Board of Education voted, 6-1, Tuesday to implement a split schedule with Clarendon Hills Middle School that started Thursday as crews continue to eradicate small concentrations of mold. The “half-day schedule” has Clarendon Hills students attending class from 7 to 11:30 a.m., while Hinsdale students attend from noon to 4:30 p.m. “No one wants this to go on indefinitely,” said Jill Vorobiev, school board vice president. Gary Frisch, assistant superintendent of business, said the district was working on exact routes for buses, and Superintendent Renee Schuster said the district would provide instructional materials to students. School Board President Marty Turek voted against the split schedule and voiced support for the alternative options presented. One of those options was that Hinsdale Middle School would be closed for the remainder of the week, and if the ductwork cleaning was not completed by Sunday, then a split schedule would be imple-

mented starting Monday. The other option was to continue to cancel classes until the school reopened with an extended school year. No matter what option the board approved Tuesday, students and staff will have to make up missed days. The students and staff can make up days during days coded as “Not in Attendance” and by utilizing “Emergency Days.” Schuster said the latest report she received from cleaning crews indicated they were running a day ahead of schedule, so there was optimism from the district. In the meantime, administrators and board members said they want to make the transition as easy as possible. “Hopefully we can all rally together and support the teachers and students,” Vorobiev said.

On Jan. 16, mold testing was conducted at HMS – which has been closed all week – by Integrity Environmental Services,

Police identify cause of fatal carbon monoxide leak By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com OAK BROOK – A recently serviced water heater was likely the cause of the carbon monoxide leak at the Oak Brook mansion where a man was found dead Jan. 16, according to police. Pei Yeh, 86, died, and seven women ranging in ages from 20s to 70s were injured after Oak Brook police and fire

responded to a report of subjects who were experiencing breathing problems. At 9:46 a.m., large levels of carbon monoxide were located within the mansion at 2900 Oak Brook Hills Road after crews arrived on the scene. The homeowner reported having one of the home’s water heaters serviced recently, and it was determined that the water heater was the “proximate” cause of the leak, the

release said. The investigation also revealed that the carbon monoxide detectors in the home where not functioning at the time of the incident. The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office will not be filing criminal charges, the release said. “At this time no foul play is expected,” Oak Brook Police Chief James Kruger said Jan. 16. Kruger said the females lo-

cated were in “various states of health” and were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital. Kruger said there was an indoor pool in the residence where the highest level of carbon monoxide was discovered. Oak Brook Fire Chief Gary Clark said upon arrival there were numerous members of the household who had medical complaints and disorientation, which led crews to believe carbon monoxide was

Clark said carbon monoxide levels were exceeding 1,000 parts per million. “At that point they evacuated the residence and [crews] put on their breathing apparatus and monitored the whole home,” Clark said. Clark said crews then shut off the gas to the home and began ventilating the structure, which he estimated was about

about 15,000 square feet. “It’s an extremely large home, multiple levels,” Clark said. Carbon monoxide levels that exceed 35 parts per million over a long period can start to cause health problems, Clark said. “Once you get up to 200 parts per million you’re going to start exhibiting symptoms a lot sooner,” he said. “At 400 parts per million, if you’re at that level for one or two hours, you could get a serious headache and it could be life threatening after three hours. At 800 parts per million, it would take 45 minutes and then you would start experiencing dizziness and nausea and convolutions.” Clark said the home had several furnaces, a boiler and multiple hot water heaters.

• MOLD Continued from page 3 immediately or relocate to a different site.” Meaghan Sheridan, a teacher at the school, said she has experienced health problems since the start of the school year, including a migraine that caused her to have to see a neurologist. Sheridan also said she’s had to send about half her students to the school nurse for

nosebleeds, migraines, itchy eyes and one girl who she believes passed out. “It is a dangerous situation for our students and teachers to be in that school with the mold,” Sheridan said. “I don’t know why you’re still arguing about pulling up those base boards to remove that drywall.” The District 181 Board of Education unanimously approved two motions of nearly $400,000 to be done by SERVPRO. The first is the removal

of baseboards and lower portions of drywall throughout the building, sealing the area with a microbial sealer and installing new baseboards, which will cost $129,512, while the ductwork cleaning totals $255,000. Some residents in the audience questioned the price of the project, but Turek reiterated the importance of the safety of the students and faculty. “This board member would rather get it done and get it done right,” Turek said.

After battling mold issues in the summer of 2012, Hinsdale Middle School staff again discovered new evidence of mold in its buildings in August. The affected areas were addressed in October, but more testing was done in November and December, according to the District 181 website. Before results of that testing – which showed the air quality to be well within acceptable guidelines – were received Jan. 14, frozen pipes caused a series of water leaks in the building early in the new year. The first leak was discovered Jan. 4 and cleaning continued through Jan. 9. Here’s the timeline of events from that point, according to the district website: Jan. 10: Integrity Environmental Services conducted an air quality test. Those results were received on Jan. 16 and showed the air quality to be well within acceptable guidelines. Jan. 10-12: The buildings and grounds department provided 24-hour monitoring of the building to ensure no additional weather-related leaks would appear and no other mechanical systems were compromised during the extreme weather. Jan. 13: Cleaning continued throughout the day. A regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting was held that evening. Superintendent Renée Schuster and board members discussed the need to develop both short- and long-term solutions, as well as address the root cause(s) of the building’s issues. Jan. 15: SERVPRO began working at the school. Jan. 16: Results from the air quality test conducted on Jan. 10 were received and showed

the air quality to be well within acceptable guidelines. A representative from IES took surface samples of possible mold growth observed by SERVPRO staff, who were on site to perform deep cleaning and removal of wet drywall. It was announced that HMS would be closed on Jan. 17 as district leaders awaited the results of the mold test and allowed additional time for SERVPRO to clean the building and continue addressing affected areas with no students or staff present. Jan. 18: Written results from the mold test conducted Jan. 16 were received and indicated low concentrations of mold spores on the drywall and surface samples tested. Jan. 19: Cleaning continued throughout the day. A conversation with representatives from SERVPRO and IES indicated that two additional steps to remediate the mold found in HMS should be recommended to the Board of Education for completion prior to resuming classes. These recommendations involve cleaning the ductwork throughout the building and removing the baseboards and any drywall that touches the flooring. Jan. 20: The Board of Education held an emergency meeting to hear reports from IES and SERVPRO and approved two expenditures for the eradication of the mold. The HMS building will be closed through at least Jan. 28 to allow time to clean the building and do additional testing. Jan. 21: The board votes for HMS students to go on a split schedule with students at Clarendon Hills Middle School starting Thursday as cleaning continues through the week

Chief Brad Bloom said the department has already received several applications from residents to carry a concealed gun. “We’ve already had locally 43 village residents apply for concealed carry permits since Jan. 6,” Bloom said last week. “It’s a higher number than I thought would be interested in applying for this.” Bloom said the process for a resident to receive a concealed carry permit starts with submitting an application, fingerprints, a photograph and then

going through 16 hours of training by a certified instructor. There’s also a local review process where the police department has the opportunity to object to someone being issued a concealed carry permit. “We’re notified when someone from the community, resides in the community or who has previously lived in the community is applying for a concealed carry so it gives us a heads up to log into the system to review those applications,” he said. Decals featuring a gun with

a banned symbol over it have been displayed on several buildings in the village, including at the library, Memorial Hall and schools. Bloom said the warning stickers are displayed if it’s a prohibited area by statute to carry a concealed firearm. “We’re just trying to give some people notice that if they are concealed gun owners, that they cannot bring a firearm into those areas,” he said. Bloom said the Hinsdale Police Department has discussed

the law in training and has been given guidance by the village attorney. Bloom isn’t anticipating the first permits to be issued before March or April. “That’s when it starts in the state, but we are notified immediately when someone does apply and then do have 30 days to reject to their application,” he said. “Then the rest of the approval process can take up to 90 days, so that’s why the state police is estimating March or April before the first permit is issued.”

CLARENDON HILLS – Infiniti of Clarendon Hills agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by the Federal Trade Commission concerning allegations of deceptive advertising, according to a news release from the FTC. Infiniti of Clarendon Hills, 415 E. Ogden Ave., allegedly violated the FTC Act by deceptively advertising that consumers could pay nothing upfront to lease a vehicle when, in fact, the advertised amounts excluded “substantial” fees and other amounts, according to the news release. The ads also allegedly failed to disclose certain lease related terms, said the release. Along with Infiniti of Clarendon Hills, dealerships in

California, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan and Texas were cited in the release. According to the complaints, the dealers made a variety of misrepresentations in print, Internet and video advertisements that violated the FTC Act, falsely leading consumers to believe they could purchase vehicles for low prices, finance vehicles with low monthly payments and/or make no upfront payment to lease vehicles. The proposed consent orders settling the FTC’s charges in the cases are “designed to prevent the dealerships from engaging in similar deceptive advertising practices in the future,” the release stated. Calls to Infiniti of Clarendon Hills for comment were not immediately returned.

No applause for parking garages I shop downtown Elmhurst only when I can find on-street parking. I do not like nor do I feel safe in parking garages. I don’t care how many parking garages Elmhurst builds, I will only shop downtown Elmhurst when I can secure ground-level, open parking. Perhaps Elmhurst should consider tearing down a vacated building such as Plass Appliance to provide more onstreet parking. I am sure the city is worried about loss of revenue from the torn-down building. Kudos to snowplowing crews I’ve been a Bloomingdale Township resident for more than 30 years, and the Township Highway Department has done an excellent job with my road in the unincorporated area I live in. HINSDALE – There’s only been about five “really good days” of ice skating at Burns Field this winter, but that’s five more than there’s been the past few seasons. That ice skating rink at 320 N. Vine St. has been closed the last two seasons due to unseasonably warm weather. Residents in Hinsdale, as well as the rest of the Midwest, have noticed this year’s bitter winter in comparison to the days when no one had heard the term “polar vortex” before. While the freezing temperatures are obviously a benefit to outdoor ice rinks, it also puts skaters in a bind when it comes to safety. “I’d say honestly there’s only been five or six days of skating, and when it has been able to skate on, the temperatures have been unsafe on certain days,” said Gina Hassett, director of Hinsdale Parks and Recreation. The village does post signs saying when it’s safe to skate on the ice. Hassett said the decision whether to close the rink all depends on what

the weather forecast will be in the near future, such as around New Year’s Day when it seemed like the snow would never stop. “Snow is not good for rinks that are designed to just be pads of ice because the snow insulates the ice and keeps it from freezing,” Hassett said. Conditions for the ice rink are ideal when the overnight temperatures are below freezing, Hassett said, but with the unpredictable weather it can be difficult to assess whether or not the rink will open on certain days. “We’re kind of at the mercy of Mother Nature,” she said. “As much as we all like the sunny winter days when you get a good one in the high 40s, it will start to melt the ice.” Hassett said the rink at Burns Field is 96 by 205 feet in size and between the liner, the water use and crews monitoring the ice, the cost to make and maintain the rink is between $8,000 to $10,000, but the Parks and Recreation department had liners on hand this year still from the past two seasons because of the rink’s closure.

Chaplain leads aid effort for native Philippines By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Few could imagine the sheer devastation that would transpire Nov. 8, 2013 in Southeast Asia. Homelessness, starvation and widespread destruction are now part of everyday life for millions in the Philippines who were victims of Typhoon Haiyan – one of the largest typhoons ever on record that reportedly killed more than 6,000 people. Meanwhile here at home, all Dan Ocampo could do was watch the coverage in real time and hope for the best as the native Filipino still has family in the area since coming to the United States in 2001. “We were watching it closely when they said it was about to touch down so it was almost like the countdown with the New Year,” said Ocampo, chaplain at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. “It was so enormous that no one was really ready for it.” Fortunately for the Bolingbrook resident, his family lives

But he wasn’t spared from the heartache of losing loved ones. “I’ve lost a lot of my friends there … people I went to seminary and college with,” Ocampo said. “They are also pastors and they’re missing.”

Not long after the typhoon touched down, Ocampo got to work and organized a collection to send supplies to the ailing country. Adventist Hinsdale, along with other hospitals within Adventist Midwest Health, donated hospital lines, medical supplies, hygiene items, clothing and food. Earlier this month, about 30 volunteers gathered in the

Fellowship Hall at Fil-Am Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Hinsdale and packed the supplies for victims. “Everyone who responded was just so generous,” he said. “The love is just overflowing. People are calling me, emailing me. … I’ve never received so many emails in my entire life.” Ocampo said while col-

lections are no longer being gathered, there is still a great deal that needs to be done for a country that is still “not even five years” from being back to where it was. In much of the country, there are “tent cities” due to loss of shelter, and an influx in the amount of orphans. “They were left behind by the parents who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the kids,” he said. “Most of them are being taken by the government because there’s no one to take care of them.” Ocampo said after four weeks there was a minimum of 300 boxes collected that were about 24 inches high and 21 inches wide full of supplies. He said what struck him the most was how much people were “driven by love.” “People responded so well with love and the love of helping people to be better and to be well,” he said. “It is out of the heartbeat that you can feel the agony and the needs of other people and I believe whoever in the world needs any helping, those who have been driven by love can do this.”

Mayor focused on business building in 2014 By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com WILLOWBROOK – It’s been about eight months since Frank Trilla took the reins as mayor in Willowbrook, and in that time, he says he’s visited about 100 businesses in the village. Trilla said he likes to walk inside, introduce himself and learn about what the village can do to help make the business thrive. “The more I know about the businesses in town the better I can represent our village,” Trilla said. Strengthening the local business community was a key component Trilla discussed at his recent state of the village address Jan. 8. In terms of “Trilla-Vision,” or general goals, the mayor would like to maximize sales tax revenue through econom-

ic development initiatives, reinvigorate park facilities, improve communications throughout the community and develop a long-term plan to address village facility space needs. “We’re a village without a property tax, and as a resident I like that, Frank and as mayor Trilla I’d like to keep that,” Trilla said. “The best way for us to keep that is to bring in more businesses that generate sales tax revenue. That’s really what it’s all about with small towns; it’s all about the sales tax revenue.” To his dismay in 2013, the Willowbrook Dominick’s location was part of the grocery chain’s mass exodus

from the Chicago area. Trilla said he was a customer there for 25 years. Despite the bad news, Trilla said the village can look forward to Whole Foods moving into that location. “We’ve gotten permit requests from them and that’s about as close to a confirmation that I’m aware of,” he said. Trilla said one of the largest accomplishments of 2013 was the “campus concept.” Recently, the village purchased two buildings next to the current village hall at 7760 Quincy St., which includes the building at 835 Midway Drive and the building at 825 Midway Drive. The campus-like setting will include a village hall, police station and community center, which Trilla said was one of his “biggest, most aggressive plans.” Now in 2014,

he’ll be looking to start a new project. “The other big issue I would like to tackle over the next four years is the area between Route 83 and Madison Avenue,” he said. “It’s our little portion of Route 66 that cuts through town and we’re really hoping to redevelop that area.” In his state of the village address, Trilla also discussed the responses of a recently mailed survey to randomly selected residents. Of the 224 responses received, 99.1 percent were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with quality of life in Willowbrook. Restaurants and theaters ranked the highest in the survey in regards to new developments desired in the village. “We want to keep our options open and we really have to make the best out of every square inch we have,” he said.

Hokkaido turns cuisine into performance art OAKBROOK TERRACE – As we walked into Hokkaido Sushi Hibachi Steak House & Lounge, I was struck by the beauty of a mural that appeared 3D. Inside the restaurant that bears the name of Japan’s second largest island, we instantly were greeted by a hostess who asked whether we preferred to sit at the bar or hibachi. Feeling adventurous, we said yes to the hibachi, which Hokkaido’s website terms a smokeless cooking station. As she led us through the restaurant, I noticed we were walking on a clear glass floor with fish swimming underneath – a delight for any age (it reminded me of a family trip to Silver Springs, Fla., where we floated in glass-bottom boats). The decor is a deft blend of traditional and modern designs, including Oriental illustrations and motifs with an array of colorful lighting. In a separate room were four tables with family-style seating and two hibachi grills each. We were seated with a grandmother and her granddaughter from Glen Ellyn. I ordered the hibachi combination of Hokkaido chicken and shrimp, while my companion chose a sirloin steak and chicken combo. Hokkaido offers different styles of preparation, such as three ways to prepare your shrimp: golden (with egg), hibachi (lightly seasoned) or garlic. Among side dishes are chicken soup, salad, mixed green vegetables and steamed rice. The hibachi experience is as much a performance as a meal, with the chef twirling his metal spatula and tapping out sound effects on seasoning containers and the grill. Each ingredient becomes a character in the play, with the chef acting as narrator and band. I opted to substitute chicken soup for miso soup as overture. A Statement by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) Catholic schools have a long-standing commitment to academic excellence that is rooted in the faith- based mission of Catholic education. The Common Core State Standards in no way compromise the Catholic identity or educational program of a Catholic school. The Common Core State Standards initiative, begun in 2007, is a state-led, bipartisan effort that is not a requirement for participation in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) or any other federally- funded program, and there are no mandates for any Catholic school to follow any federal rules if they adopt the Common Core. Adoption of the Common Core is voluntary; individual states, Catholic dioceses and other private schools make their own decisions about whether to adopt the standards. The Common Core State Standards are a set of high-quality academic expectations that all students should master by the end of each grade level. The standards establish consistent learning goals for all students that focus on preparing them to succeed in college and careers in a globally competitive workplace. The standards define and clearly communicate grade-specific goals and inform parents about learning outcomes, making it easier for parents to collaborate with teachers in helping their children achieve success. The Common Core State Standards are not a curriculum. A curriculum includes what is taught, when it is taught, how it is taught and what materials to use. None of these items are included in the Common Core State Standards. For Catholic schools, all of these elements will continue to be determined by diocesan superintendents, principals and teachers working to meet the needs of their students. The Common Core represents a fundamental shift in the teaching and learning process. The Common Core establishes clear, measurable goals for students that assist teachers in making instructional decisions. The standards place emphasis on creativity, critical and analytical thinking and application to curriculum content. The Common Core is not a national curriculum. It guides the way that instruction takes place in each classroom, allowing the Catholic school to develop its own curriculum content. Fans factor in Central victory Late Hamilton FT seals win By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Fans of Hinsdale Central’s boys basketball team packed the gym when Central hosted Lyons Township, and Chase Hamilton and his Red Devil teammates gave them something to cheer about. After seeing a double-digit lead whittled to one point, Hamilton’s free throw with 5.3 seconds left helped secure a 48-45 win against the West Suburban Silver rival Lions on Jan. 17. Central’s sizable student section went into a frenzy when the final buzzer sounded, and Hamilton said, the fans played a role in the win. “They fed off baskets we made and we fed off them,” Hamilton said. “[LT] started off the game killing it, and it’s tough to get back into it when that happens, but once we made one basket they started cheering and really gave us the energy to get back in it.” Central struggled out of the gate and trailed 14-5 after a quarter, but Thomas Ives’ 3-pointer early in the second quarter cut the deficit to 14-9 and helped the Red Devils, and their fans, get into the game. The hosts closed the half on a 10-2 run to grab a 21-20 halftime lead. “Our coach got on us pretty hard,” Hamilton said. “Some words of wisdom and then a little bit of yelling, too, and that really sparked us to go on a run, and we ended up one at half.” Ives’ baseline drive and reverse layup put Central ahead 39-28 with 5:13 to play, but the Lions clawed back into it. Sydney Kopp and Hinsdale South’s girls basketball team definitely got a postseason-caliber test when they faced Downers Grove North on Saturday. The Trojans, losers of just two games coming into the contest and a contender for their conference title, broke open a close game with a 30-4 run as they dealt the Hornets a 71-44 nonconference loss. “They’re a great team and we’re glad we get to ... play them,” South head coach Jen Belmonte said. “The last two or three years we’ve been able

to get a couple wins [against them]. They were due to get us.” The Hornets (9-11) were down 23-13 early in the second quarter before Kopp willed them back into the game. She scored 11 straight points as South went on a 13-0 run to grab a 26-23 advantage. “They were running us a lot and they had the momentum, and I just tried to get the momentum back on our side by doing whatever I could,” said Kopp, who finished with

27 points and hit a 3-pointer, went 6-for-6 at the foul line and had a rebound and coastto-coast layup for her 11-point surge. “I felt like I had the lane a lot so I tried to get fouled and finish.” Unfortunately for the Hornets, North answered with a huge run of its own. The Trojans closed the half with a 15-2 surge for a 38-28 lead at intermission, and the advantage swelled to 53-30 midway through the third quarter. The deficit was too much for South to overcome. “We knew going in they were going to be strong team,” Belmonte said. “We did something a little different than what we normally do and [the girls] played well with what I asked them to do. “They did everything they could.”

Tourney tests key to postseason success By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com Head-to-head dual meets are a staple of any wrestling team’s schedule. Yet when it comes down to getting ready for the postseason and winning a state title, which is the ultimate goal for any wrestler, nothing compares to tournament experience. And nothing compares to the experience gained when wrestling at the top tournaments in the state. To a man, wrestlers and coaches agree that seasoning at the elite tourneys during the regular season is the best way to get ready for the grind of the postseason state series. “You can’t wrestle every single team [out there] in a dual meet. At tournaments you see the best teams,” said Hinsdale South senior Justin Maslow, a state medalist last year. “You could wrestle a bunch of dual meets and never really wrestle anyone good, but at tournaments like the Berman [at Palatine] or the Whitlatch [at Hinsdale Central], you’ll run into good kids if you win matches. “So it definitely prepares you because most likely you’re going to run into those kids again [in the postseason].” While experience at any tournament can be helpful, competing in the best tournaments is the best way to gauge progress and see how the best wrestlers stack up against

each other. That’s how Juwan Edmond looks at it. “I definitely feel like I need to be in bigger tournaments and compete against the best competition to get myself ready for the state series,” said the Hinsdale Central junior, who placed second in the state last season. Both the Red Devils and Hornets have similar tournament schedules as they both competed at Barrington’s Moore/Prettyman invite, the Whitlatch and the Berman. Hinsdale South has upgraded its tournament schedule this season to include Barrington and Hinsdale Central in addition to the Berman, which it competed in last year. That’s by design, according to first year head coach Steve Holland. “There really are no slouches [on our schedule],” Holland said. “We started off at the Barrington tournament, then we went to the Whitlatch, and then we had the Berman. Those three tournaments are probably among the top six or seven tournaments in the state, so we’re battle tested. “The schedule is definitely an upgrade from where it’s been in the past. We’ve taken some tough losses individually and as a team, but right now you see us from weight class to weight class winning the tight matches, having the heart and knowing you can be in there because you’ve been in some of the best wrestlers in the state. It’s starting to pay off.”

Will the draft fit Chicago Bears’ needs? With the week off before the Super Bowl, all eyes are on the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, – yeah, sure – the East-West Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., this weekend, it’s time to begin to focus on this year’s NFL College Draft. Specifically, will the best talent available at the time the Bears select in each round of the draft fit the Bears’ needs? Here is a given. Teams that skip the best players available when it’s their turn to draft to take a lesser prospect to fill an area of need fail to become good football teams. Phil Emery and Marc Trestman committed at their season-ending press conference to get younger on defense. That happens by drafting well. Lance Briggs and Tim Jennings will be back, and Zack Bowman and Kelvin Hayden will be economical options to resign as well. We can also assume the Bears plan to continue to try and develop Jonathan Bostic and Khaseem Greene, and it seems likely Shea

McClellin may end up spending some time at linebacker, too. So the Bears get younger on defense by drafting defensive linemen and safeties. Offensively, the Bears are in the best shape they’ve been in decades but need depth at running back and tight end. That may wait, but the development of a young quarterback shouldn’t. I have no idea if the prospects I’m about to introduce you to interest the Bears or not, but I think the next few months of scouting will prove they should. Two prospects who might fit with Marc Trestman and, if the Bears get very lucky, could be available in the fourth round but should be in the third are A.J. McCarron of Alabama and Jim-

my Garoppolo of Eastern Illinois. McCarron reminds me of a full-sized Russell Wilson, and Garoppolo stole the show at the Shrine Game and is about to become this year’s fast riser at the Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine. This is not a good year to need a true pass-rushing defensive end with the 14th pick in the first round. Only a truly dramatic and expensive move will get the Bears in position for Jadeveon Clowney of South Carolina, and that’s not going to happen. Get to know Kony Ealy of Missouri. At 6’ 5”, 275 pounds, he is an accomplished, NFL-ready pass rusher who will probably be taken several picks in front of the Bears. If he’s not...Kareem Martin out of North Carolina could be an interesting option if he’s still available in the third or fourth round. Defensive tackle will be one of the deepest positions in the draft, but will the Bears be sticking with Lovie Smith’s base Tampa Two, which requires a three-technique, or will they

be shopping for larger, space-eating two gap players. The best three technique prospect is Timmy Jernigan of Florida State, but he’s no where near good enough to merit a pick higher than 20-to-25. Notre Dame’s Louis Nix is the best defensive tackle in the draft and will almost certainly be a top 10 pick, maybe top five. His teammate, Stephon Tuitt and Minnesota’s Ra’Shede Hageman are the next best prospects and could fit at 14, but at 6’6”, 310 to 315 pounds each, both are best suited to be five technique ends in a 3 – 4 scheme. At safety, Alabama’s Hasean Clinton-Dix is the prize of the draft and could just be a fit with the Bears at 14. Second, third and fourth round options are Deone Bucannon of Washington State, Louisville’s Calvin Pryor and Jimmie Ward of Northern Illinois. There are a ton of 40-yard dashes and agility drills to run between now and the draft, but these are a few of the young men worth keeping an eye on.
