business aims to stay a pop above the rest

This family-owned gourmet popcorn company in Genoa is operated by the hard-working husband and wife duo, Nick and Nicole Esposito. They enthusiastically dedicate their time to creating their own original tasty popcorn mixes and flavors; giving back to others; and raising two young boys, Lincoln, 7, and Theodore, 3. Their two year-old business has really popped!
“We love living in Genoa,” says Nicole. “I left a stressful corporate career behind in 2023 to raise my 2 boys. Needing additional income with the inflating economy, we took a leap of faith to start our business that was also flexible to our family’s schedule and hit the ground running. Giving back to the community was a focus of ours, especially after 2020. I guess you can say we had been wanting this dream in some form since then. It was a thought that brewed for a few years until we decided to just go for it. We have to show our kids that you can truly go after your dreams!”
While not in a brick and mortar location yet, Nick and Nicole decided to start with booths and tents at markets and events to sell their products. Keep It Poppin offers delicious flavored popcorn in a variety of sizes like 2-cup Celebration Bags, perfect for birthday parties, wedding, showers, corporate events, and gifts. The 5 cup bags are the most popular with customers; and their Poppers’ Gallon Bags are a fun take on a “bakers dozen’. Nicole says,

“We have classic flavors always on our menu and release limited seasonal favorites throughout the year.” There are over 20 varieties of delicious flavored popcorn, including caramel, cheese, and specials like Jalapeno Cheddar and Movie Theatre.”
You’ll find Keep it Poppin’s tasty popcorn treats at the DeKalb Farmers Markets, Genoa Days, Market in the Park, and OpenDoor Coffee’s Fall and Christmas Artisan Markets. They also offer pop-ups at local businesses like Sweet-DeLights, the Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Society Museum, and the Genoa Veteran’s Home as well as collaborations with the Genoa Public Library and The Inventor’s Lab. Nicole says, “We love the opportunities we have received working with other businesses curating their vision to include our award winning gourmet popcorn at their events. We are organically growing and it’s been amazing to see who is reaching out to us. It is so humbling with a lot of pinch me moments.”
Nick adds, “We’re a cottage home industry working behind the scenes from 7:00pm to 2:00am and believe me, the research, development, and tasting is not so bad. Feedback from our customers has been amazing, including numerous 5 star reviews. We’ve made so many connections and are so very grateful to everyone who supports us. The clock never stops for us. There have been some all-nighters preparing for some of our biggest events.”

Nick and Nicole run the entire operation. They create original recipes, pop the popcorn, label and date the popcorn for freshness. Family members help them with balancing the leg work it takes to successfully operate.
we give them a free Poppers’ Gallon of popcorn in return.”

Nicole and Nick are a true team. “Popcorn is really a niche business and there is a lot of work involved, but we are dedicated to making the best quality popcorn and growing our business,” Nick said.
The Espositos also strongly believe in giving back. “We collect pop tabs for Ronald McDonald Charities,” says Nicole, “which they recycle for funds to help support families with sick children. When our customers collect a quart- sized bag full of pop tops and turn them into us,
In addition, Keep it Poppin has collected over 200 pieces of luggage that they donated to local Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) facilities. “We are grateful to Tobinson Ace Hardware in Genoa, which generously uses their location as our donation drop-off center,” she says.
If you’re not at an event, you can still purchase Keep It Poppin popcorn through their website at keepitpoppin-genoa. square.site/ or find out more on their Facebook page. Since they operate out of their home, Keep It Poppin also offers convenient “porch pick up and delivery” for customers.

musical excellence, anticipating a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
By: Patricia Szpekowski
Acrown jewel of the Genoa area community is GenoaKingston High School (GKHS) in Community Unit School District 424. Highly recognized with a 93% graduation rate, it is dedicated to its mission of “Preparing Students to Excel & Contribute to their Community”.
Within all of its academic, activities, clubs, athletics, and program achievements, the Genoa-Kingston Band Program stands out for its contributions to the musical education of students.
Under the direction of band director Brian Drews, the musical program has lofty goals. He started his job at GKHS teaching 5th grade band and the high school band in 2023.
Prior to arriving on the GKHS scene, he obtained an undergraduate degree in music education from Western Illinois University (WIU) in 2016, taught for 4 years, then went back to WIU for his masters degree in instrumental conducting.
With his strong relationship with WIU and a teaching experience under his musical belt, the GKHS band program is on a high trajectory with Drews to make 2026 a very special year.
“We have a huge trip planned in December of 2026,” says Brian. “Our marching band will be joining the WIU Marching Leathernecks, as well as other high school marching bands, to perform at the Pearl Harbor Memorial in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Our students will spend 5 days in Hawaii not only learning about the history of Pearl Harbor, but also getting to experience the deep culture of the state.”
The excitement has been building as Drews has spoken to his students’ parents for their valued opinions and blessings to move forward with the plan. The result has been enthusiastic fundraising, which will continue until they board the plane for their once-in-a-lifetime experience.
In the midst of all of the practices and preparations, the GKHS marching band received some of the highest scores in a long time in 2025. “At our final marching band performance, we received 2nd place, which was our best rating and performance of the season,” states Brian, proudly. “It’s a strong way to end the season on a high note, including three of our students who made the Illinois Music Education Association District festival this year.”
You just might be familiar with the Genoa Kingston Marching Band as it performs at all high school home

football games, Volley for the Cure, and a few home girls’ and boys’ basketball games. Brian notes that they have concerts at the school each semester and their marching band has participated in competitions in Marengo, Sycamore, NIU, and WIU. “We’ve also made appearances at the Great Genoa Duck Race and the Genoa Days Parade. Our jazz band performs at Celebrate the Season in Downtown Genoa and various jazz festivals around the state,” he says.
There’s even more to their community connections. Brian says they host the GK Jazz Dance where the GK High School and Middle School Jazz Bands share the stage a professional jazz combo. “We love to see community members at our concerts and invite them to find our events on the Genoa Kingston Fine Arts website,” he adds.
Brian believes that being in a music class develops a well-rounded individual with improved self-confidence and transferable life skills that help students beyond the classroom. “Music is a powerful outlet for self-expession and cultural understanding,” he says.
So, hearty cheers are in order for the Genoa-Kingston High School Marching Band, which is on a successful path leading to Hawaii in 2026.

“Enriching the lives of our clients, Caring for our community, and Believing in the American Dream”

The true test of a successful and thriving bank is its commitment to the community it serves. Since its founding in 1901 in Malta, Illinois, Resource Bank has built a high reputation of integrity through continually building rock solid relationships with its customers. In 2026, Resource Bank celebrates the legacy of its 125th anniversary.
“We are locally owned and proud of being a strong community bank,” says Diana Shott, Resource Bank, President & CEO, who was born and raised in Genoa and is a lifelong resident. “I have so many wonderful memories of growing up here and happy that our children were raised here, too.”
“Resource Bank is an active Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce member as we proudly sponsor events and contribute support on the Chamber board,” says Diana. “The Chamber does a very good job of promoting its members and our entire community.”
Resource Bank has 15 branches throughout DeKalb, LaSalle, and Kane counties and has served the Genoa community since 1994. “We are a high-touch organization that is open 7 days a week,” Diana says, “with digital banking available 24/7. We talk to our customers and when they give us a call, be assured that we will personally return their calls by the end of the day. We also meet with our business and agriculture customers at their own locations to offer assistance and guidance.”
This commitment has been guided by three Rock Principles. Richard Katz, the Executive Chairman of Resource Bank, personally conveyed them in a letter to Resource Bank customers — Enriching the Lives of our Clients, Caring For Our Community, and Believing in the American Dream. “It is our pledge to keep those Rock Principles every single day,” adds Diana.
Resource Bank provides traditional deposits and loans; personal and business checking accounts; complete lines of insurance services; wealth management for investments, trusts, tax, savings, retirement, college, and agriculturecentered banking services. Customers can obtain license plates and stickers and order foreign currency for a trip.
Three locations offer full service postal services.
Resource Bank also has a knack for bringing the community together. For customers age 50 and over, the Classics Club was formed. Members have their choice of

two different interest bearing checking accounts. They can enjoy exclusive trips planned by Classics Club Advisors. Examples of destinations visited in 2025 included Italy, Japan, the New England area, and Yellowstone Park. Other trips, closer to home, included Wrigley Field and Lake Geneva. Special events and activities are also held at the bank’s locations and free community rooms.
Another touch-stone to reach the community is the direct-mailed quarterly Your Resource for Living magazine, published by Resource Bank for the past 20 years. It features success stories about business customers and farms, plus interesting people, organizations, nonprofits, and local artists. “We’ve received many positive responses and look forward to continuing to share the stories of our friends and neighbors,” says Diana.
Since 2001, Resource Bank has funded a scholarship program for graduating high school seniors. A student is selected from each of the bank’s 15 locations and receives a $1,000 scholarship. Applications are on the bank’s website, where students submit the community service and charitable activities they have completed. “The selections are anonymous and they are awarded to students for their volunteerism,” says Diana. “It is incredible what they do to help others.”
Resource Bank has also established an innovative program, called — Inspire-Renew-Enjoy — to help small towns in America thrive. The website at InspireRenewEnjoy.com features inspiring success stories, current resources available to help small towns renew and grow, and information on community events.
Jerry Foster, Resource Bank’s Small Town Champion, has gathered an incredible amount of information on how a small town can make positive and lasting changes to benefit the whole community. “Jerry is doing an outstanding job of helping to guide these towns to find what they need to accomplish their goals,” adds Diana.
As Resource Bank embarks on its 125th year, it is evident they are totally guided by their three Rock Principles — “Enriching the lives of our clients, Caring for our community, and Believing in the American Dream”. Stop by any of their fifteen branches to see how banking locally can make a difference for you.

There’s a significant rise in the need for food assistance throughout DeKalb County. The need is great for families, individuals, seniors, and students who need community support for the basics of everyday living.
An invaluable resource in Genoa can be found at Rooted For Good (RFG), located downtown at 415 West Main Street. It was previously known as the Genoa Area Community Food Hub Food Pantry. The not-for-profit offers three important services to help neighbors through a food pantry: educational classes; and a commissary kitchen rental to local food businesses.
Associate director Karson Paris plays a key role in advancing the organization’s mission to improve food access and strengthen local food systems. He supports RFG’s many helpful programs, including the vocational training program at RFG-Kirkland, rental gardens, and mobile food pantry services across the DeKalb County area. Karson has been part of the Genoa location since 2021 and brings a deep understanding of RFG’s programs and community partnerships to his leadership role.

“We are part of the Emergency Food Program of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) program,

administered by the Northern Illinois Food Bank,” said Karson. “In addition to the food items that we purchase, this enables us to receive free, high-quality food each month that we give away for free during our food pantry events.”
Karson works with Genoa’s RFG program director, Char Onstad, to purchase the food from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The available inventory is diverse with fresh and canned vegetables, dairy products, meats, and other household staples.
Karson notes that RFG in Genoa serves 8500 residents a year and 50 households per week and those in all walks of life. “The trend really goes up during the holidays and we are already anticipating an increase in those who we will serve next year,” he says.
“Our program is different in that we have no requirements to receive assistance,” adds Karson. “We will register first-time clients on the Northern Illinois Food Bank’s registration system, called Linked to Feed. Once their registration is complete, they are ready to shop in-person during food pantry events or visit our website to order their groceries online.”
RFG allows neighbors to get help with dignity and respect. Karson notes, “With online ordering, neighbors are able to pick up their groceries without waiting in long lines and actually receive the type of food they prefer. This system expedites the entire experience.”
Clients are able to shop for their food from Rooted For Good twice per month on the first and third Mondays from 9-11 am or second and fourth Tuesdays from 4:30-6:30 pm.
Of course, the success of Rooted For Good is also due to its very dedicated volunteers. Volunteer Judy Witanowski of Genoa has been happy to be involved for the past two years. “I’m retired and found this to be a great opportunity to help and get to know a really great group of people,” she said. “I’m so proud of the people in Genoa for getting involved and thankful for all of their donations.”

pickling, pasta making, and gardening, to name just a few. The community is welcome to attend. “We are fortunate to have such a wealth of knowledge and skill sets right here who offer to help,” adds Karson. You can find details about upcoming classes at the RFG website: rootedforgood.org

Char Onstad, RFG Program Director, feels fortunate to have the chance to be here. “I enjoy working with all of our volunteers who provide so much help for us,” she says. I also enjoy working with our local schools where the students are always ready to pick up and provide donations on a regular basis. They are an enormous help to us.”
RFG hosts free monthly educational classes where area experts and community members share their expertise on

A valuable community outreach effort is that Rooted For Good offers its kitchen for rental. “This is a great place for food truck owners and other local food businesses to store and prepare their food,” Karson said. You can contact Karson at kparis@rootedforgood.org for more details on kitchen rentals.
Rooted For Good fulfills an enormous need in the community and its impact comes around full circle with everyone involved.
