BY VINDE WELLS Aronia berries hit the spot with eightyear-old Abigail Kalnins, 8, of Chana. “Love them,” she said as she filled her mouth with the small dark purple berries straight from the bush at BerryView Orchard, northwest of Mt. Morris, one of seven stops Sunday on the Ogle County Farm Stroll. Her mother Lynne Kalnins laughed. “At first she thought they were too tart,” she said. “I like them now,” replied Abigail, grabbing another handful. Her 2-year-old brother Jonas held out a chubby purple-stained hand. “Jonas likes to smash them as you can see by his hands,” said Kalnins with a grin. She and her husband Matt and another daughter Caroline, 3, were taking in the Farm Stroll and all it had to offer. “We’re just out enjoying the day,” she said. The berries, also known as black chokeberry, ripen around Labor Day and were at their peak for steady stream of visitors who turned out to learn more about local agriculture and enjoy perfect fall weather. Jeff and Julie Warren, owners of BerryView, have been raising aronia berries since 2010 and now have 1,600 bushes in production. The berries are juicy with an astringent flavor and can be eaten fresh, on salads, blended into smoothies, or mixed with other fruits in jellies, baked goods, yogurt, sorbet, or juice blends. The Warrens also raise apple trees in their u-pick orchard, and visitors were buying bags of crisp Cortland apples before they continued on the Farm Stroll. Jeff said they planted 600 new trees in 2017 and another 50 this year, and as soon as they mature will offer golden delicious, gala, honey crisp, and jonagold apples. Along with the bright red Cortlands, visitors could buy rhubarb-aronia and cherry-aronia jelly and aronia-apple crisp to take home or pick up a pumpkin or two grown by Warren’s nine-year-old grandson Henry. Farther west at Centennial Acres, southwest of Forreston, Matt and Emily Williams were offering visitors, both young and older, a taste of the country on horseback. Little Bryn Hardin, 3, of Polo, was decked out in her Disney Princess helmet for her very first horseback ride.

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Illinois State Police Crime Scene investigators and the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office are assisting the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department with the investigation into the death of a Polo man who was found dead in his home after a fire late Saturday night. Sheriff Brian VanVickle did not call the death of Keith Fredricks, 81, suspicious Monday afternoon but said further investigation is warranted since the cause of the fire could not be “readily determined.” Polo Police Chief Kurt Cavanaugh requested the assistance of the sheriff’s department. Cavanaugh said neighbors called the Polo Fire Department around 11:45 p.m. Saturday after observing the fire which started in an attached garage at Fredricks’ home at 502 W. Buffalo St.

Elderly Polo man found dead after house fire Firefighters found Fredricks, who lived by himself, dead inside the house. An autopsy was performed on Monday, but Coroner Lou Finch said the cause of death was not yet available, pending test results. Fire Chief Tony Karrow said the garage was “fully involved with fire” when firefighters arrived and significant smoke was inside the house. The fire was out in about 10 minutes, he said, but the house sustained smoke, water, and heat damage. Fredricks’ car, which was parked in the driveway, was also damaged by the flames and heat. The siding on the next door neighbor’s was severely damaged as well. The Mt. Morris, Oregon, Forreston, Milledgeville, Lanark, Dixon Rural, and Dixon City Fire Departments, and Advance Ambulance assisted at the scene.

IN BRIEF Rock River Sweep rescheduled The 2018 Oregon Rock River Sweep has been rescheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29 from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Check in will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Kiwanis Park, behind Conover Square, at the intersection of North Second Street and Franklin Street.

Volunteers are needed on foot or in boats to clean up a nine mile section of the Rock River, from north of the boat landing on Ill. 2 to the Castle Rock State Park boat landing, for this annual effort to protect and preserve this beautiful local resource. Originally the event was set for Sept. 8, but flooding made that impossible.

He and his wife Emily purchased it in 2010 and began the task of rehabbing a barn built in the 1860s. They plan to host an open house on Oct. 13 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the farm being in the family and to let the public take a look at their riding stable. The couple has 13 horses in their stable, eight of their own and five they are boarding. “Our main focus is boarding, lessons, and riding,” Emily Williams said. Other attractions at the farm on Sunday were chickens, ducks, and a friendly calf named Keebler, who eagerly cooperated with youngsters who offered him a handful of food and a pat on the head. “He licked me,” exclaimed 3-yearold Rebel Precht, of DeKalb, as the calf ate from her out-stretched hand. The 14th annual Chicken Supper and Silent Auction Benefit for the Forrestville Valley Grade School Mentoring Program will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 19 from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Forreston Grade School cafeteria, 401 S. First Ave., Forreston.

The menu will include baked chicken breast in special bacon sauce, au gratin potatoes, green beans almondine, dinner roll, dessert, and beverage. The cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children ages 4-12. A meal of a hot dog, chips, bev-

Mumford wins Best of Show at Art in the Country The gallery is open free of charge from 2 to 4 p.m. each of the next three Saturday afternoons. Most of the art pieces are available for sale, and several of the artists have provided additional prints or paintings for sale, as well. This show is the final one of the season. Other Encore events coming soon include four art classes beginning Monday, Sept. 24 and the Sandstone Art Market in the gallery on Saturday, Nov. 17. Encore! Mt. Morris hosted its opening night of the “Art in the Country” September art show on Sept. 8 at the Old Sandstone gallery. Fifteen artists entered up to three pieces each around the rural theme. Several awards were given for the most outstanding entries. Ellen Mumford, Dixon, received the Best of Show award for her watercolor “Woodland Stream.” She also received one of the Judge’s Choice awards for her watercolor “Hershey Centennial Farm.” Bob Logsden, also of Dixon, won the other Judge’s Choice for his photograph “Don’t Fence Me In.” Three additional Awards of Excellence were given for Becky Hundrieser’s (Grand Detour) “Tractor Seat,” Carol Bingham’s (Sycamore) “Snow Fall on the Church Road” and Sandra Weiland’s (Geneva) “”Old School.” A host of other fine pieces are also a part of the show.

Dust at Dusk brings bicyclists from several states 150 ride gravel roads in thunderstorms BY TERRY SCHUSTER Oregon Together More than 150 bicyclists traveled 30 or 50 miles of gravel roads, in the dark of night, through a pouring storm Sept. 2, and then celebrated the unforgettable experience. They were part of a large cycling sub-culture who loves the challenge of riding gravel roads. Ogle County has some of the best gravel roads with hills and scenery in Illinois. It lies close to large metropolitan centers which have no gravel roads, hills, or scenery. Welcome to Ogle County. This was the second annual Dust at Dusk event organized collaboratively by White Pelican Inc. in Oregon and Stu Garwick, owner of Freeport Cyclery. This year’s event even attracted Kae Takeshita, of Chicago, one of the top gravel road racing cyclists in the U.S. Scores of riders then stayed to enjoy an after party at Franklin Street Pub. Many participants stayed the night in area campgrounds, hotels, and in community homes which offered sleeping space. A lot of energy was evident at the registration table in the Conover parking lot as equipment was unloaded and checked. Riders gathered in groups to share stories and make new friendships. Local cyclists Dan Libman, Dom Cozzi, and Scott Stephens worked hard to make everyone feel welcome. Maps of the 30- and 50-mile routes on roads as far as Polo were handed out. By the 6 p.m. start time the weather was ominous, with thunder in the north and dark clouds to

Riders on the longer route were engulfed in the storm at the halfway point around 8 p.m. One rider recalled riding downhill on a gravel road at 25 miles per hour with thunder, wind, and rain lashing at him. He said it was like bicycling down a rushing brown river. His comment afterward was, “I can’t wait to return next year.” They are a tough breed. By 11 p.m., stories of adventures flowed freely over pizza and beer as the last riders made it back to town. All agreed it was a great success.

“The ride is a great way to spend night before Labor Day, with the day afterward for recovery,” Cozzi said. Next year’s ride is again planned for Sunday of Labor Day weekend. Two additional cycling events are coming to Oregon in the near future. Ogle County’s largest organized ride, TOSOC (Tour of Scenic Ogle County) will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22. More than 400 riders are expected for this third annual Village of Progress fundraiser ride of 10, 32, or 62 miles. Information can be found on the

events page at villageofprogress. org. The next cycling event is Lutheran Outdoor Ministry Center’s “Pedal for a Purpose” round trip ride to Byron at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29. This is a relatively flat 22-mile ride along the Rock River National Water Trail and returning by the Byron Nuclear Plant. Information for that ride can be found on LOMC.org/news/. Nine other established country road routes for enjoyment at any time can be found on bikeogle.org, or at the Historic Depot viewing stand.

Station. This year marks 70 years since the founding of the fire protection district, and door prizes from area stores and restaurants will be

given. In addition to prizes, a whole hog and a freezer will be raffled. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the ambulance station in Polo,

or from any Polo firefighter for $5. Pink Heals of the Sauk Valley will also attend the event. Bring the kids to see the pink fire truck and get their faces paint-

4-H Foundation Honors Volunteer Nancy Etnyre Award is given for exemplary service The Illinois 4-H Foundation annually recognizes 4-H volunteers for exemplary service to the Illinois 4-H program.

This year, 67 new members were inducted into the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame during a celebration Tuesday, Aug. 14 at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield. This year celebrated the 14-year anniversary of the award, said Angie Barnard, Illinois 4-H Foundation executive director. “These long-time volunteers fully embody what 4-H strives to instill in youth,” Barnard said. “They are caring, dedicated, generous leaders, and the Illinois 4-H Foundation is extremely proud to be able to provide this honor to each and every one of them to thank them for their service to this

Since then, she has stayed active as an Extension volunteer. She and two friends formed the Trailblazers 4-H Club in Oregon and led the group for 12 years. She also held positions on the Ogle County 4-H Foundation, Multi-County Advisory Council and State Advisory Council. BINGO IN MT. MORRIS

If you love bingo and you’d like to help two local entities raise some cash then mark Sunday, Sept. 16 on your calendar.

The Autumn on Parade Committee and the Moose Family Center are teaming up for an afternoon of bingo at the Moose center in Mt. Morris. The event is open to the public. The center’s bar and restaurant will open at noon with bingo following from 1-3 p.m. Packets will be sold for $13 at the door for all 13 games. Players can also purchase extra cards for each The Moose Family Center in Mt. Morris and the Autumn on Parade festival are teaming game. The value of each bingo pot will be determined by the number of participants. Dabbers will be available for players at no charge. Inclement weather downstate helped Polo earn another home game Friday night against Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran, and the Marcos put on an impressive display in the first half of a 49-12 win. Polo (2-1) scored on all six of its drives in the first 24 minutes of action, four via touchdown runs by Brady Webb. “All the credit goes to the linemen,” Webb said. “I can’t do anything without them. That’s where it starts and ends.” The Marcos went 63 yards in three plays to open the game, as Tucker Mumford’s 21-yard TD run started the scoring. After a 35-yard punt return by Braiden Soltow to the Lutheran 45, Webb scored from 2 yards out with 4:42 left in the first quarter. Mumford hauled in a 24-yard catch to start the second, but fumbled into the hands of a Knights defender. However, the Marcos forced a fumble on the return, and Webb pounced on the ball at the 1. The speedy senior scored a play later. Quincy Williams’ 31-yard reception on the first play of the fourth drive set up a highlight-reel touchdown run by Soltow. The senior quarterback scored from 27 yards out, breaking several tackles in heavy traffic. Webb scored on a 23-yard TD run with 3:38 left in the second quarter, and Johnny Crumley caught the two-point conversion to up Polo’s advantage to 35-0. Webb put an ankle-breaking move on Lutheran safety Zach Bozarth for his final TD run – also from 23 yards out – with 1:40 left in the first half. “Last week he got shut down,” Polo coach Jeff Bumsted said of Webb. “Those bursts are what we’ve been looking for all year. Seeing the open field and going is what we’ve been working on. He had a few last week where he saw open grass, but we’ve been working on him seeing cutbacks and not trying to always

He did an awesome job.” After Bozarth put Metro-East Lutheran (0-2) on the board with a 67-yard TD run to open the second half, Webb took the ensuing kickoff 80 yards up the Marcos’ sideline for a touchdown. “Confidence-wise, I like to think it’s going to the end zone every time,” Webb said. “But it’s not just me, it’s a credit to the other 10 guys on the field.” On the last play from scrimmage, Zach Keplar scored on a 2-yard TD run. Lutheran managed just 23 yards of offense in the first half, as Polo

middle linebacker Draven Wells recorded two sacks and two tackles for loss. “They bring their linebackers from depth, and shoot different gaps at different times,” Lutheran coach Micah Pomerenke said. “Their linebackers do a nice job of getting skinny and making plays. We knew it was going to be a problem watching film of them last week against Milledgeville.” Polo accumulated 318 yards in the first half, 260 on there ground. Webb racked up 216 all-purpose yards, while Soltow wasn’t far behind with 179 all-purpose yards. Mumford ran for 52 yards on four carries, and also

completed two passes for 27 yards. Bozarth rushed for 100 yards on 11 carries, and caught Keplar’s lone completion for 29 yards. Football: Cardinals blow by Dakota 40-20 Forreston had 222 yards rushing early in second quarter BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com In his pre-game comments, Dakota coach Joe Free said he would know early in the contest whether his team could hang with Forreston. In the battle between 1A top ten teams, it was Forreston crushing the Indians 40-20. It was Forreston’s fifth straight win at Dakota’s home field and the seventh win over the Indians in eight tries. And, like Free stated, this one was decided early. Early in the second quarter, Forreston had amassed 222 yards rushing on its way to a 20-0 lead, as Dakota only mustered a pair of 3-and-outs, this after receiving the opening kickoff. “We didn’t match their intensity. They manhandled us on the offensive line and we needed our inside linebackers to flow to the ball,” Free said. “Like a good championship program, they were fast and physical.” Running primarily behind the right side of guard Derek DeVries, tackle Mitchell Heinz and tight end

Jacob Swanson, the Cardinals were not stopped until its last drive of the first half stalled in Dakota territory. “We were harping all week we hadn’t had good starts,” Forreston coach Kyle Zick said. “We told them to earn it and prove it,” On its opening possession, rotating fullbacks Garett Badertscher and Ethan Mulder pounded Dakota, with Mulder going 26 yards up the gut for an early 6-0 lead. Compared to how the Cardinals started against DuPec and Le-Win, it looked like a different team. “The first two games - terrible,” said 4-year varsity player Heinz. “We came more focused in the first half.” Forreston got the ball right back after Sawyer Wild dribbled a perfect onside kick that Dalton Becker recovered. Dom Christensen, part of a large stable of Cardinal backs, quickly made it 14-0 on a 5-yard score, set up in part by his 18-yard run. “On the onside kick, we saw an opening and Sawyer executed,” Zick said. “The entire game, we executed so much better than the last two weeks, especially on offense.” On Forreston’s third possession, Free moved top lineman Carter Drake to the right side of Forreston’s line in hopes of slowing down the Cardinals. It was to no avail, as 12 plays and 65 yards later, Badertscher crashed over from three

yards out for a 20-0 lead. Badertscher, who went over 100 yards for the first time in his 3-year varsity career, ran eight yards on a fourth down to keep the drive alive. Forreston also overcame a second-and-25 situation followed a boneheaded unsportsmanlike penalty. “They didn’t fill the C-gap (outside of tackle) and we took it to them,” Badertscher said. “Our line picked up their linebackers. Our first half was definitely played with more intensity than we had before.” Behind junior quarterback Josh Clark, Dakota finally began to move the ball. Clark had consecutive runs of 14 and 15 yards to help the Indians reach the red zone. Then on fourthand-2, Jakob Boomgarden and Derreck Vince stopped him for no gain. Dakota was able to cut the lead to 20-7 with four seconds left in the half on a 1-yard Clark run, prompting Free to mention at halftime his team needed more of Clark to have any chance of winning. One thing was for sure - nothing else was working for Dakota. Just as impressive at quarterback on the Forreston side was Hunter Rogers directing the offense for the first time, with starter Bailey Cullor sidelined with an ankle injury. Rogers, a running back who had only a week to prepare, looked like a seasoned veteran in putting the Cardinals up 28-7 after its first drive of the

second half, capping off a 13-play, 68-yard drive with a 1-yard sneak on fourth down. “He has very high football IQ and is a great leader,” Zick said. The Cardinal defense continued its strong play with another threeand-out to start the second half. It was Wild dropping Cade Kloster for a 3-yard loss to force a punt. On Dakota’s next possession, it was Badertscher nailing Clark for an 8-yard sack. “It was nice to get them out on the three-and-outs,” Zick said. After Badertscher’s sack, Forreston scored three plays later. Stacked up at the line scrimmage, Evan Kelsey broke free for a 56-yard touchdown scamper and 34-7 lead with 11:34 left in the game. In the highlight for Dakota, Clark and Drake combined for three straight reception, one a brilliant one-handed grab by Drake in traffic. Clark scored on a sneak to make it 34-14. Christensen raced to a 47-yard score for the Cardinals’ final points. Badertscher, Mulder, Kelsey and Christensen combined for 432 yard rushing. “Their backs carried out every fake and ran hard,” Free said. Forreston hosts EPC in a third straight week of a NUIC Northwest gauntlet. “We have the potential to be a great team and we took a step forward to it tonight,” Zick said.

COMMENTARY Andy Colbert the luxury of Hunter Rogers as a fill-in quarterback. Rogers looked like a pro back there, directing the show for injured Bailey Cullor. A smart, athletic kid like him can do that. With the way the conference is shaking out, Forreston’s game with EPC looks like the last heavy lifting of the regular season. If Forreston runs the ball like they did against Dakota, EPC (3-0) will have a hard time stopping the Cardinals. How about Milledgeville putting the hammer down on perennial Upstate power Stockton? The senior-laden Missiles are loaded on defense and well on their way to an unbeaten regular season. The wild card in the Upstate is Freeport Aquin. An interesting test for them is this week at Polo, in a match up of teams with talent but small rosters. Coming in to the 2018, the Metro East Lutheran football team from

Edwardsville has seen hard times. The Knights were out-scored 27312 in their first six games of 2017, on the way to a 1-8 record, with the only win coming by forfeit over Crossroads Academy of Big Rock, a program for home-schooled kids that dropped football last year. Metro East hasn’t resorted to shutting down its program, but with a 6-75 record from 2009-17, the school may have considered it.

Disappointment at NIU

Off-Field Problems Hard to believe, but this year has been even worse with off-the-field problems. As one of only eight independents in Illinois, Metro East, located in the far southwest part of the state, has a huge challenge finding games. In the first week, they were forced to travel 600 miles round trip to Chicago. In itself, that was bad enough. Then, after completing pregame warmups against Hansberry Prep Academy, gunfire rang out on a nearby street. Fearing for both teams’ safety, the game was canceled. Last year, Metro East made a 500mile round trip to get pounded by Polo. At least the Marcos were the

On Saturday, I took in the NIU game against Utah of the PAC-12 and was disappointed with the fan turnout. The stadium was only 2/3 filled and the student section was poorly represented. NIU put on a standout performance against a team picked to finish second in their division of the PAC-12, but couldn’t even pack the place in the home opener with great weather. So, maybe it shouldn’t be a surprise that of the 48 games NIU has played against Big Ten teams since 1970, none have been at DeKalb. Ty Harmston of Stockton represented the NUIC quite well as starting tight end. In his senior year, he caught his first career pass, helping set up NIU’s first field goal.

ompared to the first half against DuPec in week one, it looked like a different Forreston football team against Dakota. The Cardinal offensive machine was relentless in picking up 26 first downs and literally driving the ball down Dakota’s throat. I hadn’t seen Forreston play since that first half and either: a.) they’re substantially improved, b.) that first game was an adjustment period, c.) DuPec was better than expected and Dakota overrated, or d.) all of the above. Linemen don’t make the headlines much, but what a performance by guard Derek DeVries and tackle Mitchell Heinz in blowing the Dakota defenders off the ball. Add in Garett Badertscher leading second man through and that is as good of a blocking threesome you’ll see in 1A. Not only are those guys physical, but they are agile and fast. It was enjoyable watching play-after-play go over that side and also see the running backs hit the holes hard and lay some licks on would-be tacklers. Many a 1A program will use their best athlete at QB, but do not have

Pam Karlson will speak on Birds in the Garden: Tips for Creating and Enjoying a Bird Oasis at the Wild Ones meeting on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at Rock Valley College in the Physical Education Center PEC0110 (lower level), 3301 N. Mulford Rd., Rockford. Karlson has documented more than 110 bird species in her Chicago garden which were attracted by the wildlife habitat she has created. She will discuss landscape enhancements to attract resident and migratory birds to urban and suburban gardens. An enthusiastic photographer, her photo-rich presentation covers the diversity of bird species found in the Chicago area, as well as their migration habitats, diet, nesting, and supplemental water and feeding needs. She will also explore habitat needs of pollinators, the role of citizen science and planting suggestions for birds, with an emphasis on natives. Karlson is a career artist, gardener, and birder, and has been rescuing migratory birds for 14 years as a wildlife rehabilitation volunteer. Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan reports the following police activity. Sept. 4 At 8:15 a.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 100 block of North Second Street involving a 2010 Ford driven by Dawn C. Jones, 52, of Dixon, and a 2018 IC School Bus driven by Susan L. Coine, 57, of Oregon. No citations were issued. Mark Much, 29, of Milledgeville, was arrested at 10:47 a.m., for aggravated fleeing to elude, obstructing justice, possession of cannabis 100-500 grams, reckless driving, and speeding 40 mph over the limit. These charges are a result of an incident that occurred the evening of Aug. 13 at approximately 7:46 p.m., followed by a thorough investigation, and resulting in the above arrest. Savanah P. Leschner, 22, of Pecatonica, was issued a citation at 10 p.m. for driving while license suspended. This violation occurred in the 500 block of North Fourth Street. Sept. 5

Sept. 8 At 12:30 p.m., police investigated a car vs deer traffic crash in the 1300 block of West Washington Street involving a 2005 Saturn driven by Hannah L. Krahn, 19, of Oregon. No citations were issued.

Sept. 6 Xoe L. Blake, 16, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 11:55 p.m. for failure to signal. This violation occurred in the 100 block of South Seventh Street. Sept. 7 Richard D. Davis, 45, of Oregon, was arrested at 4:17 a.m. for driving while license revoked and possession of a controlled substance. Davis was transported to the Ogle County Jail. This violation occurred in the 100 block of South Third Street.

One parking ticket and two verbal/written warnings were issued Sept. 3-9.

At 10:50 p.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the 100 block of North Seventh Street, resulting in the arrest of Nicholas C. Davis, 34, of Rochelle, for disorderly conduct. Davis was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At 11:07 p.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the 300 block of Franklin Street, resulting in the arrest of Brian L. Boyland, 39, of Oregon, for domestic battery. Boyland was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Illinois State Police Troopers issued 501 citations, 668 written warnings, and made 36 criminal arrests during the month of August. Speeding accounted for 281 citations, 41 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, and 21 citations were issued for distracted driving violations. Troopers investigated 10 traffic crashes, assisted 79 motorists, and conducted 127 commercial vehicle inspections, 13 of which were placed outof-service for safety reasons. Four arrests were made for driving while under the influence. District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, had 1 traffic crash fatality in August. Other recent activities in District 1 were: Sept. 1 Joseph R. Braden, 44, of Rochelle, was stopped for improper lane usage at 1:45 a.m. on Cleveland Avenue at Gary Street in Rochelle and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage, failure to wear a seat belt, failure to notify the Secretary of State of an address change, and failure to carry a driver’s license on his person. Braden was also wanted on an Ogle County warrant for failure to appear for leaving the scene of a property damage crash. Braden was released on an I-bond for the DUI and transported to the Ogle County Jail for the warrant.

Edward Glavin, 52, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol while deputies were investigating a suspicious vehicle in the Rolling Green trailer park.

Sept. 7 Melissa Encinas, no age or address given was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol at 12:11 a.m. when deputies conducted a traffic stop on I39 at mile marker 99 for a violation of the Scott’s law. Encinas also received citations for improper lane usage and Scott’s law. She was jailed in lieu of bond. Deputies were assisted by AC Towing. John H. Cooper, 42, of Clinton, Iowa, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He posted the $384 full cash bond and was released with no further court date needed. Sandra J. Garcia, 24, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for driving while license suspended with a $3,000 (10 percent) bond. Garcia was released on a recognizance bond and was scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 10. Kenneth E. Sept. 11 The Ogle County Sheriff’s Deputies, Oregon Fire Department, and the Oregon Ambulance were dispatched at 4:46 a.m. to a one-vehicle accident with injuries and entrapment in the 1700 block South Daysville Road. After an investigation, it was determined that a blue 2001 Pontiac Aztec driven by Gregory L. Crisp, 50, of Nachusa, was southbound on Daysville Road when it crossed over into the eastside ditch. The vehicle traveled the ditch for approximately 100 yards before striking a guard rail and rolling over onto its roof. Crisp was extricated from the vehicle by the Oregon Fire Department and transported to Mercyhealth Hospital in Rockford by the Oregon Ambulance with minor injuries. He was issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, no insurance, and was given an I-bond for driving while license revoked. He will appear in court at a later date.

Sept. 6 Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at 164 Dayflower Circle in Davis Junction. After an investigation, deputies arrested Joshua Fabish, 36, for domestic battery. He was held in lieu of bond at the Ogle County Jail. Jeralyn J. Allen, no age given, of Sterling, was arrested for failure to appear. She was jailed in lieu of $592 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Sept. 7. Deputies initiated a traffic stop at approximately 8:38 a.m. in the 4000 block of South Ill. 26. After further investigation, the driver of the vehicle, Jeffrey McCurdy, 46, of Freeport, was arrested for driving while license suspended. A passenger in the vehicle, James Wetzell, 44, of Freeport, was placed under arrest for possession of a controlled substance, obstructing identification, possession of drug paraphernalia, and on an outstanding Ogle County warrant. Both McCurdy and Wetzell were transported to the Ogle County Jail where they were held in lieu of bond.

OBITUARIES CLARE E. BRADFORD Clare Eugene Bradford, “Mr. B”, 67, of Byron, died on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at Swedish American Hospital, Rockford. He was born on Sept. 9, 1950 in Oregon, the son of Clare LaVerne and Mildred J. (Gaede) Bradford. He graduated from Oregon High School in 1968. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Wisconsin, Platteville. He then received his master’s degree from National Louis University. He married Rita Forrester on Jan. 26, 1973 at the United Methodist Church in Oregon. Mr. B taught in the Byron School System for 32 years retiring in 2006. He was a former Byron Middle School wrestling coach. His family was his main focus, never missing a family event especially if it involved his granddaughter Caroline whom he loved immensely. He was an avid woodworker and an all around handyman. He loved to travel, go to movies, and go for walks in the woods with his wife Rita, of 45 years. Anna E. (Zumdahl) Brechters, 89, formerly of Mt. Morris, died on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018, at Huntington Place in Janesville, Wisconsin. Anna was born on Feb. 2, 1929, the daughter of William and Marion (Miller) Zumdahl. She lived most of her life in Mt. Morris until moving to Janesville. Anna graduated from Mt. Morris High School in 1947. She married Earl Miller. She later married Henry Brechters Nov. 4, 1978, who preceded her in death in 2015. Anna worked at Kable Printing, Mt. Morris Bank, and Kable News until her retirement in 1992. She was a member of the Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren. Anna enjoyed cooking, playing cards, shopping, and spending time with her family. Anna is survived by her daughter, Linda (Wendell) Boyer, of Janesville; two grandchildren, Jhesi (Josh) Brand, of Madison, Tennessee, and Bryan Boyer (Brittany Prosser), of Verona, Wisconsin; two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a stepdaughter, Lila (Dick) Grap; three step-grand-

Sue was also a devoted mother and an accomplished homemaker, seamstress, cook, baker, and gardener. She loved strong coffee and rooting for the Chicago Cubs. Before her stroke 12 years ago, Sue was an active member of the Polo Church of the Brethren. Sue had put her faith and trust in Jesus Christ, and therefore is enjoying Heaven with no walker or wheelchair, worshiping her Savior. Karen E. Rosenbalm, 64, a 20-year resident of Oregon, died peacefully in her home on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on April 1, 1954 in Chicago, the daughter of Norris and Ada (Duck) Davis. She married Daniel Rosenbalm on Oct. 12, 1990 in Sycamore.
