Park district offers Farm to Table Dinner Good food for a good cause at Oak Lane just outside Oregon The Oregon Park District will offer its second Farm to Table Dinner, on Friday, July 26. The Farm-to-Table Dinner is designed to put food on the table directly from the farm without going through a store, or distributor. “We come very close to that,” said Debbie Leffelman, event coordinator for the Oregon Park District. “The district offered a Farm to Table Dinner Fundraiser last year and it was so popular that the community asked for another one. “After being recognized by the Illinois Parks & Recreation Association and honored with the award for Outstanding Special Event in 2018, we had to offer the dinner again.” Leffelman said. The event is a win-win for the community. People love to eat good and fresh food. “Our celebrity chefs have put together a great menu and will offer an amaz-
ing meal for our guests to enjoy while also benefiting the youth of the community,” she said The Farm to Table Dinner will be held at Oak Lane, just east of Oregon. Local celebrity chefs, from local restaurants or businesses, volunteer their time and cooking talents to prepare meals with as many of the ingredients as possible harvested locally. The menu for the evening includes appetizers, garden salad, artisan breads, honey butter, ribeye steak, pork kabob, mixed summer vegetables and a dessert sampler. Several local growers as well as the Oregon Market Vendors donate the items for the dinner and some of the ingredients are grown at the community garden in Oregon. “It’s a collaborative effort with many volunteers and a lot of community support,” said Leffelman. “The U of I Extension Master Gardeners work with the Camp OH-PEA-DEE kids to create the centerpieces. The Groenhagen Family and Circle G Farms sponsor the entertainment for the evening which is Dina Bach Music.” Local businesses that are not involved with the cooking side of the event have
donated items for the auction. “Oregon High School FFA students volunteer as wait staff for the evening. Oak Lane of Oregon provides a wonderful venue for the fundraising dinner,” Leffelman said. “With the help of many, the Oregon Park District staff look forward to the upcoming 2019 Farm to Table Dinner on July 26. The dinner is a fundraiser for the Oregon Park District Youth Scholarship Fund. “The goal for the park district is for all local youth to be able to participate in sports and recreation programs which is why the Scholarship Fund is so important,” Leffelman said. Tickets can be purchased at the Nash Recreation Center in Oregon. Tickets are $50/person or $400 for table of eight. “There is limited seating for this event so be sure to get your tickets now,” Leffelman said. KB Tough Run is June 29 at White Pines Ranch Annual event helps those burdened by medical expenses The 8th Annual KB Tough Run will be Saturday, June 29 at the White Pines Ranch, west of Oregon. The KB Tough Run is the major fundraising event for the KB Fund that was established to help those in the area community who are burdened by a medical crisis. More than 70 families have been helped by the KB Fund since its formation. Their needs have ranged from expenses related to cancer treatments, chronic illness, accident recovery, special needs therapy, premature births and more. Registration forms are available online at www.KBToughRun.com. “This year we are once again offering online registration. 5K Tough Run, Hike and Kid Sprint participants can all sign up online by visiting our website and following the ‘Register Now’ link,” said KB Tough Run Committee Member Lesley Sheffield. “This year’s event will feature professional timing by Crossroads Events. Microwave ovens are accepted at a charge of $5 per unit. These and similar items are banned from Illinois landfills. The Harman Family Bluegrass Band Plays the Free Mt. Morris Jamboree on June 28th. Downstate Illinois’ highly accomplished bluegrass band, The Harmans will make their return to the Reckmeyer Band Shell on Friday night, June 28 at 7 p.m. for the Mt. Morris Jamboree. The Harman Family Bluegrass Band presently consists of first and second generation musicians with deep musical roots dating back to 1975. Mark, Jeff, and John Harman have performed professionally for many years. People have had the privilege watching them since early childhood excel in their musical talents. Their parents, Mike and Stacy round out the quintet. Mark and Jeff, as well as their father Mike, have won and placed in various talent and band contests throughout the country and performed at the renowned Station Inn, Nashville, Tennessee. The Harman’s recorded and produced their debut CD Continuous Play in August of 2004 and have since released five more albums, their latest being January 2016’s, “In The Time That You Gave Me,” featuring guest vocal appearances by Alison Krauss and Mo Pitney. The Harman’s music style ranges from traditional to contemporary bluegrass, country, gospel and various types of music. Mike was a Rounder recording artist and a member of the Alison Krauss Union Station Band from 1986 to 1990. During this time, Mike performed on the Grand Ole’ Opry and recorded on the Grammy nominated Two Highways album and on the platinum

Sauerkraut Days to host paint party July 18 Forreston Sauerkraut Days will host a DIY Paint Party on Thursday, July 18. Registration is required and due by Tuesday, July 2. This is a public party, but you will need to pick from ready-made designs. The sign options can be viewed on the Sunny Hill Craft Company Facebook page in the “signs” folder. New designs will not be
offered. There are approximately 500 signs to choose from. All signs will be done on a single board and cost $35 and $10 of that will go to Forreston Sauerkraut Days. Participants will walk away with a finished sign that is ready to hang. Advance payment is required. Register and pay at Koeller Forreston Hardware. Sign choices and
payment due are July 2. Participants can leave their sign choices when they pay at Koeller Forreston Hardware or send an email to sunnyhillcraftco@gmail. com or post their sign choices on the Sauerkraut Days Facebook page. “We’ve already seen foxes and deer near our home,” she said. Public Health & Safety Commissioner Kurt Wilson said a survey done by the Planning Commission indicated 80 percent of the residents who responded favored allowing chickens. He said he has heard of no health concerns while researching the issue. The council also tabled the ordinance on May 28 because commissioners wanted more specific design rules for how coops and pens will be constructed. The proposed ordinance limits the number of chickens to six and prohibits roosters entirely. The birds must be kept in an enclosure or coop and within a fenced yard at all times. They can be kept only on residential property and must be in the rear yard. All feed must be stored in rodent-
proof containers, and the chicken facilities must be kept clean and odor-free. Slaughtering will not be permitted except out of sight inside a building. According to the proposed rules, anyone wanting chickens must buy an annual permit which will cost $50 for the first year and $25 in subsequent years, and pay a $50 building permit fee for the coop. Coops must be inspected and approved by building inspector Casper Manheim. The city council is expected to discuss the chicken ordinance again and possibly take action at its meeting on Tuesday, June 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the city hall. The Byron City Council recently rejected a similar ordinance proposal, and the Mt. Morris Village Board turned down a request on Feb. 26 from a 10-year-old boy who wanted to raise four to six chickens as a 4-H project.

The Oregon City Council tabled a proposed ordinance to allow chickens within the city limits for a second time last week after two residents objected and a commissioner raised questions. Commissioner Tim Krug asked June 11 to table the ordinance to allow small backyard flocks because he said he wanted to do more research. The Planning Commission has been discussing the matter for several months and recommended the new ordinance to the city council. The current ordinance prohibits
chickens within the city limits, but several residents have requested it be changed. Krug told the council he had a customer at his business who had tried raising chickens but quit because of problems, including health issues, she encountered at her home in Bartlett, a community that allows the practice. Lee Hadick, an Oregon resident, agreed that the smaller lots pose a problem because neighbors would be closer to the small flocks. He also said a realtor told him that having chickens next door could adversely affect property values. “I like chickens but I don’t think they belong here,” Hadick said. Another resident, Patricia Stroh, said she is concerned the chickens might attract other animals.

They are lifelong members at Faith Lutheran Church in Forreston. Dale and Carol have three children, Debbie (and husband John) Stierwalt of Spokane, Washington, Craig (and wife Barb) DeWall of McKinney, Texas, and Brian (and wife Bonnie) DeWall of Forreston.

Serenity offers volunteer training Serenity will offer a volunteer training course for anyone interested in working directly with patients and their families on Thursday, June 27 and Thursday, July 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Serenity Home, 1658 S. Illinois 2 near Oregon.  Some hours of self-paced learning at home will be included. Serenity Hospice and Home has a team of valued volunteers that help the organization run smoothly.  “We could not operate without our volunteers,� said Maia Johnson, volunteer coordinator. “They are so appreciated and we enjoy having them with us in the home, at Angel Treasures, at The Shed and work-
ing hands-on with patients in their homes.� Volunteering for hospice can mean many different things.  Some volunteers work inside the home helping with meals, and laundry.  Some volunteers enjoy interacting with patients and some work at Angel Treasures.  “Some people are a little nervous about working with hospice,� Johnson said. “But after a volunteer trains and gets started, they never regret it.�
The Byron Forest Preserve District will have a special guided Bobolink Walking Tour at its Bald Hill Prairie Preserve on June 22 starting at 8 a.m. at the preserve’s parking lot located at 5502 North Silver Creek Road, Mt. Morris. Join naturalists Susan Kleiman and Mark Herman to view several rare nesting grassland birds that will include bobolinks, eastern meadowlarks, dickcissels, Henslow’s sparrows, grasshopper sparrows, and others. The Bald Hill Prairie Preserve was purchased by the Byron Forest Preserve District in November 2017 thanks to a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation because the preserve’s rolling landscape was prime habitat for a wide variety of increasingly rare ground nesting grassland birds that include bobolinks, short-eared owls and northern harriers.Â

BY LARRY LOOMIS The rains managed to stay away long enough so that a complete Carroll County League games could be played this past week at Polo. On Monday, June 10, Polo One hosted Milledgeville in a Junior Miss game. The game turned out to be one of the better games played here this year as the visitors bested Polo by a margin of 7-3 in a full seven innings. After a scoreless first inning, Milledgeville jumped on top with a solo run in the top of the second, added three in the third and topped things off with three insurance runs to seal the deal in the top of the fifth. Polo could only manage a single run in the bottom of the fourth and added two in the bottom of the seventh to account for their three runs. Polo did not manage a hit all evening and picked up all three of their runs via base on balls and an errant throw by the Milledgeville catcher in the seventh to allow two Polo
runs. The difference in the ball game was that the guests had a very good pitcher who kept the ball near or in the strike zone all game as eleven Polo batters went down due to strikeouts. Polo’s pitchers did not do all that poorly as they limited Milledgeville to only five hits on the night with the big blow being a three run homer by Kendra Kingsly in the third to give the visitors a 4-0 lead at the time. Some shaky defense by Polo helped contribute to their demise in run scoring situations. Polo’s Cheyenna Wilkens took the loss while Addison Janssen picked up the win. Polo One was back in action here June 11, as they battled Stockton One. Polo took a 15-1 lead after two and won in just four innings by a 17-10 margin. The guest jumped off to a 1-0 lead after an inning of play due to four one out singles.
Polo quickly struck in their half of the inning with a seven spot. Ava McFalls led off the inning with a single. Grace Maitke followed with walk. An out later, with runners on second and third, Camyrn Jones singled to score McFalls and Maitke. With two down, Sophie Watts walked. Isabella Bergstrom singled to score a pair of runs. Katelynn Rockwood walked. Addison Quinlan then singled as Bergstom and Watts scored to give Polo a 7-1 lead they would never relinquish. Polo added eight more runs in the bottom of the second. Again, Stockton’s pitcher struggled by issuing five base on balls and hitting a batter. Sandwiched in between the walks and the hit batsman, singles by Matiake, Macy Queckborner, and Leah Tobin saw eight runs plated to give Polo a 15-1 lead through two innings.

It’s time to register for fall soccer
The visitors managed a solo run in the third and struck for eight runs in top of the fourth as Polo switched pitchers to climb to within five at 15-10 through three and one half innings. All of Stockton’s runs came via the base on ball and a three run single. The game then ended after four under the time limit as Polo picked up a pair of runs to win by the score of 17-10. Polo collected seven hits for the game while Stockton had four. Walks also played a major role as Stockton was issued nine walks while Polo picked up fourteen free passes. Grace Maitke picked up the win and Anna Blair took the loss. Polo’s Little Miss squad hosted Pearl City here June 13. The game was a walk- a-thon from the get go as neither team’s pitchers could find the strike zone. When the last out was recorded, Pearl City emerged as 20-13 victors. The Little Miss players are just getting into playing ball and when it comes to pitching there is a great deal of skill and timing involved in throwing the ball in the strike zone and neither team had pitcher who could fine the zone. Polo picked up 19 walks and had four batters hit while Pearl City was issued 29 walks and had two hit batsmen. Friday evening on a cold and damp field, Polo Two of the Junior Miss Division hosted Forreston. Polo Two has struggled with their pitching and defense during the campaign and Friday night was no exception as they dropped a 21-12 decision. The Polo ladies did not play that badly for much of the game. After surrendering two runs in the top of the first, they came back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Camyrn Cox and Kylie Cisketti drew walks. With one down, Alayna Young came up and cracked a deep drive to left field for a three run homer. Leah Tobin was then hit by a pitch then stole second and third and scored on three back to back walks. After one inning of play, Polo led 4-2. The guests did not leave that score stand for long as they put six up on the board in the top of the second. Three walks, two errors and four singles accounted for Forreston regaining the lead at 8-4. The guests would add another

creep back into contention as they narrowed the score to 16-12 through three. Polo’s Leah Calderon held Forreston scoreless in the top of the fourth with fine pitching and a solid defense behind her. Things were certainly looking up as Polo entered the bottom of the inning. Unfortunately, Forreston’s pitcher and defense rose to the occasion
and held Polo scoreless in the bottom of the inning. With time running out Polo needed only to hold the visitors scoreless in the top of the fifth to have a chance to win their first game of the season. Unfortunately, Polo’s pitching and defense were both left in the dugout as Forreston posted five runs in the top of the fifth on three singles, two walks and an error.
With the visitors leading 21-12, there was no way for Polo to get more than twenty under the eight run per inning rule and thus game ended with Forreston prevailing 21-12. Alayna Young’s home run was the only Polo hit of the game. Forreston collected ten hits. Camyron Cox took the loss while Forreston’s Isabella Thiel picked up the win.

Lois Elaine Erickson, 94, died peacefully on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at the Pinecrest Nursing Home, Mt. Morris, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 30, 1924 on the Robinson family farm in Chadwick, to Glenn and Hazel (Robinson) Kendell. She moved to Ashton in 1927 with her family, graduated from Ashton High School in 1942. Following graduation she attended Northern Illinois Teachers College, DeKalb, for one year. She worked at the Green River Ordinance Plant for two years during War World II. Lois was married to her life long love Ralph E. Erickson on Feb. 25, 1944 in Dixon. He preceded her in death Aug.6, 2006 after 62 years of marriage. Lois was a business partner with her husband Ralph running a Hawthorn Melody Milk business for 16 years in Ashton and surrounding communities.

Picky worked for Central Stamping in Polo for many years until their closing. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW in Polo, Polo Senior Center, and the Coffee Club at the Polo Rehabilitation. Picky and her husband donated bikes to the Senior Center every year at Christmas and sent necessities to soldiers overseas trying to make a small
difference in anyway they could. She also enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and of course watching the Cubs play. Genevieve “Picky” L. Horton, 79, of Polo, passed away Saturday June 15, 2019 at KSB Hospital in Dixon. Picky was born Aug. 31, 1939 in Polo, the daughter of Jack and Ruth (Horton) Ludwick. She was united in marriage to Harlem Horton on July 15, 1959 in Oregon.
She was also a loving mother and homemaker to their five children. She was a long time member of the Ashton Bible Church, attending services regularly and assisting with Bible School and other activities. She was elected to the Ashton Village Board as the first woman trustee from 1975 to 1979. She was recognized by the board on Oct. 10, 2010 with a declaration of “Lois Erickson Day.” She served on the Ashton All Class Reunion Committee from 1979 to 2004. She loved walking at the Mills and Petrie building, gardening, and was an avid reader, and hosting the annual family Memorial Day picnic for more than 40 years. She loved attending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s sporting events. She also enjoyed watching sports on TV. Survivors include a brother, Richard

OBITUARY ALAN J. WIENEKE Alan J. Wieneke, 73, of Mt. Morris, died on Sunday June 16, 2019 at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, Rockford. Al was born on June 14, 1946 in Monticello, Iowa, the son of Joe and Mildred (Moorman) Wieneke. He graduated from Morrison High School class of 1964; he attended Western Illinois University, Clinton Community College; and he graduated from Chicago Automation Institute and Sauk Valley Community College.
Al served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1971. Al married Carol Mather on Aug.14, 1971, Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. Al worked for Kable News Company from 1971 to 2009, retiring after 38 years. He was a past member of the Mt. Morris Village Board and he served on the board of directors for the Kable Credit Union (Rockford Bell Credit Union). Al loved to play golf and enjoyed
watching all kinds of sports; he enjoyed his time with his family, especially watching and being with his grandchildren. Al is survived by his wife, Carol Wieneke, Mt. PUBLIC VOICE Strohs fear chickens may attract undesirable wildlife Dear Editor, This is for the citizens of Oregon — if you do not want chickens for neighbors — listen up! The Oregon City Council planned to vote at its June 11 meeting on Ordinance 2019-104 to allow chickens in the city limits. Yes, in the city limits. We spoke against this action — one reason being they may attract other undesirable animals and we have already seen foxes and deer here in our south end recently. Smell and noise hardly needed mentioning. Also brought up was our small lots and the possibility of lowered property values.
