Larson named GV’s Most Valuable Person BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The recipient of German Valley’s 2019 Most Valuable Person Award was surprised when her name was called. Peggy Larson was relaxing in the audience June 7, lending morale support and help as needed, as the annual German Valley Days festival, sponsored by the local Lions Club, was just getting underway at Ben Miller Park.

“Oh yes, I was very surprised. I’m very honored,” Larson, herself a Lions Club member, said after the presentation. Emcee Donna Smith, also a Lions Club member, presented the annual award and praised Larson’s efforts for the festival. “Her area of service is most evident in her participation in the planning of German Valley Days,” Smith said. “She faithfully and tirelessly works in putting together our annual festival.”

“She is an organizer and an idea person, who then works to make her ideas a reality,” Smith said. “I wouldn’t want to do it without her.” Larson moved to German Valley with her husband in 1994 and joined the Lions Club in 2000. Since then she has served as the club’s first vice president, president, and secretary, and is currently the treasurer.

She also has knitted caps for the last five years for the Veterans Assistance Commission of Stephenson County. Ag in the Classroom puts students on GPS trail Fourth grade students at Centennial Elementary School in Polo discovered the importance of GPS to farmers through an Ag in the Classroom program. During the program students learned fun facts about the satellites used by GPS receivers. “There are at least 24 satellites orbiting the Earth at one time. The satellites, powered by solar, weigh about 2000 pounds and are 17 feet across,” said University of Illinois Extension Ogle County, Melinda Charbonneau, Ag in the Classroom Program Coordinator. Some uses of GPS in agriculture include: field mapping, soil sampling, crop scouting, tractor guidance and variable rate applications. “GPS allows farmers to have tractors with auto-steer. This helps so there is not overlapping of seeds, chemicals, fertilizers, etc…,” Charbonneau said. “GPS allows farmers to plant more seeds in richer soil and fewer seeds in poorer soils. It is also used when applying fertilizer. Instead of the whole field receiving the same amount of fertilizer, the amount of application is based on

the needs of the soil. After hearing information about GPS and satellites, students participated in a GPS scavenger hunt. “They were trying to be the first to collect 10 letters to spell a word. Once the letters were unscrambled they found the word was satellites,” Charbonneau said. Agriculture in the Classroom is a program to help students gain a greater awareness of the role of agriculture in the economy and society. Students learn that thousands of farm products are in the world around them—on their plate, in the clothes they wear, in the medicine that makes them well, and in earth-friendly fuels and plastics. Ag in the Classroom is offered through the University of Illinois Extension in partnership with Ogle County Farm Bureau, Carroll County Farm Bureau, Ogle County Soil & Water, and Carroll County Soil & Water. Lyle Grobe & the Rhythm Ramblers will perform at the Mt. Morris Jamboree Friday Night Concert season this Friday, June 14 at 7 p.m. in the Reckmeyer Band Shell in downtown Mt. Waco will make its debut performance at the Mt. Morris Jamboree on Friday, June 21 at 7 p.m. at the Reckmeyer Band Shell in downtown Mt. Morris. “Three-fourths of this quartet has graced our band shell stage twice as Anderlik, Otto and Church, though last year’s performance was cut short by rain, they were well received and greatly admired each time,” said event organizer Larry Ubben. Three of the top bluegrass musicians in the Chicago area, Rob Anderlik, Pat Otto, and Mike Church first met at a late night jam session and felt a deep musical connection from the moment they played together, Ubben said. Even better, they discovered they shared a wide range of musical interests, ranging from Southern and classic rock, blues, swing, jazz standards, cinematic instrumentals, folk music and of course, bluegrass. They formed a trio in 2015 and quickly built a reputation as one of the most versatile acoustic bands in the Midwest. “Featuring the music of the Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, The Band, Little Feat, Lyle Lovett, trad/progressive bluegrass as well as original material, Waco is Wavy Dave plus AOC,” Ubben said. Polo welcome guests to 54th Town & Country Days Polo is welcoming guests and residents this weekend to its 54th annual Town & Country Days. The four-day festival started Wednesday evening with Swimming Pool Games with a fireworks display scheduled for Thursday evening on the high school football field. “Down on the Farm” is the theme of the festival which will be held through Sunday, June 16. Great American Shows is once again providing carnival rides daily through Sunday afternoon. Kids Day is Friday from 12 to 5 p.m. Armbands for unlimited carnival rides until 5 p.m. will go on sale at noon for $20 apiece. Besides the carnival, a Kids Fun Fair, open until 3 p.m. offers face-painting, games, and prizes, along with a petting zoo from 1 to 3 p.m. Spaghetti-eating and Jell-O-eating contests and an Oreo-stacking contest will take place in the festival tent starting at 2 p.m. The Polo Historical Society will hold an open house on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the history museum across from the Polo Post Office and at the Aplington House just up the street. Betty Obendorf and Kathy Pasch will sign copies of their recently published Civil War history book “The Gallant 15th of Illinois.” Alumni Night in the beer garden on Friday night at 5 p.m. offers an opportunity to renew acquaintances and listen to the music of Route 38. Other Friday events include Merchandise Bingo and the dunk tank.

LOMC Swing Choir to perform in Mt. Morris The Swing Choir Tour from Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center in Oregon will perform on Friday, June 21 at 5 p.m. at Mt. Morris Senior Center, 9 E. Memorial Walk is July 4 Pound the Pavement is a scenic walk and fun run that travels approximately four miles around the streets of Mt. Morris. It follows the route that Nelson walked every day, in any kind of weather. Join Mt. Morris community along with people from across the U.S. for the 17th annual Lois Nelson Memorial Walk and Fun Run this year as “Pound the Pavement” begins on Thursday, July 4 at 9 a.m. at Dillehay Park in Mt. Morris. Last year more than 200 walkers and runners, bikers and strollers joined in along with 60 sponsors to support the walk. This family friendly and now traditional 4th of July community event is also a fundraiser for Northwest Illinois Special Olympics, as Nelson worked with developmentally disabled adults as her vocation and also supporting the Let Freedom Ring Festival.

A hot dog vendor and ice cream truck will be on site for the day, but picnic baskets are also welcomed. Attendees should know that alcoholic beverages are not allowed on the grounds. Guests are also encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chairs to the event. The Lee, Carroll, Ogle and Whiteside County Farm Bureaus along with Country Financial will host a crop marketing workshop on Wednesday, June 19 at 7 p.m. at the Days Inn in Rock Falls.

“Crop Marketing Strategies to Survive the Current Farm Economy” is a two-hour seminar designed specifically for producers to help them manage risk associated with the current low commodity markets and identify market conditions to capture profit margins through 2019 and into 2020.

To see Timberlake Playhouse’s production of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” which is being featured through June 16. I thought the show would be mainly for children but I believe adults will enjoy it even more. Chana School Museum annual sale was successful Dear Editor, The Chana School Museum’s annual rummage sale was an event that brought many folks out regardless of the bad weather. There were smiles on many faces as young and old found treasures to take home. The funds raised this year were the greatest yet of the 20-plus years of organizing and running the sale. Why was the sale a major success? Was it the bad weather that brought people out knowing that the Oregon Coliseum would shelter the event, or the incredible donations at bargain prices that attracted the buyers. Maybe both! Regardless, the Oregon Coliseum was packed to just about overflowing with a variety of items. The sale had even unusual things like a “suitcase table” and an expensive electric self-raising computer table. Thanks to Kathy and George Bouska there was an enormous offering of teaching materials for teachers and parents.

Plants sold quickly and were donated to the sale by Tim and Penny O’Rourke, Earlyne Warmolts, Jennifer Kaffenbarger, and me. This event was a success for several reasons. First, it generated funds that help maintain the old 1883 schoolhouse. The Chana School Museum runs totally on donations and grants. Volunteers saved the school, restored it, run programs for children, and maintain the building. The second reason the sale was a success was that there were items brought to the sale that could be used at the museum, such as vintage clothing, office supplies, and a 42-inch flat screen TV. The third reason this event was a success was the fact that people met people and had a good time. Everyone enjoyed the community spirit that was generated. Customers were happy getting a super deal. Volunteers gained a remarkable feeling of making a difference by organizing an event, making the selling area well arranged to attract buyers, and providing an opportunity for folks to visit with one another. Thanks to the City of Oregon, the Chana School Foundation was able to use the Coliseum again this year for this fundraiser. The location is perfect for people coming into town for groceries and other tasks or the folks passing through town using highways 2 and 64 who can easily see that there is an event going on at the Coliseum. Thanks also goes to the newspapers for their great coverage to get the word out to all their readers, Merlin’s Greenhouse for their donation, all the businesses that allowed posters to be displayed before the May 24 and 25 event, the volunteers who were busy for five days dealing with various aspects of the event, and all those who provided items for the sale. It is amazing that the castoffs of one

Braedon Fyock receives allstate award for baseball Forreston High School’s Braedon Fyock was named to the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association’s 2019 1A All-State Team. Fyock, a shortstop on the Cardinals 2019 team, was one of 18 players named to the first team. He signed a letter of intent to play basketball at North Central College, Naperville

earlier this year. He is the son of Jason and April Fyock. Micha Knauer, a pitcher and first baseman for River Ridge High School, was the only other area player to receive the honor. Both Fyock and Knauer are seniors.

Boyer was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

June 9 At 1:13 p.m., police responded to a disturbance in the 300 block of W. Washington Street resulting in the arrest of Shavon R. White, 38, of Oregon, for domestic battery. White was transported to the Ogle County Jail. Ashley A. Anderson, 35, of Dixon, was issued a citation at 3:22 p.m. for unlawful tinted windows. This violation occurred in the 500 block of S. 4th Street. Two parking citations and 11 verbal/ written warnings were issued from June 3-9..

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan reports the following police activity. June 4 At 10:50 a.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of W. Washington and S. 5th Streets involving a 2000 Mack Semi driven by Kerry L. Hix, 64, of Oswego, and a 2003 Honda driven by Amy M. Branscomb, 36, of Chadwick. No citations were issued. Madeline M. Wright, 28, of Freeport, was arrested at 2:31 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Wright was also issued citations for speeding, 40

mph in a 30 mph zone and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Wright was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 300 block of N. 4th Street. Roberda M. Lawrence, 50, of Rockford, was issued a citation at 8:23 p.m. for operating a vehicle with an expired registration. This violation occurred in the 100 block of S. 4th Street. June 5 Chelsie N. Of the first eight batters to go to the plate, all eight scored on single by Kylie Cisketti and a blast for a double by Camryn Cox to complete the scoring allowing Polo to take a seven run lead. Polo led 8-4 when Mt. Carroll put a six spot on the board in the top of the fourth. The visitors did not manage a hit in the inning but six walks and a hit batsman saw six runs come home as Mt. Carroll regained the lead at 10-9. Mt. Carroll went on to score five over the last two innings as Polo struggled offensively. In the bottom of the sixth and trailing 15-9, Polo managed to get Reagan Grenoble on with one down. Consecutive singles by Ryplee Custer and a Courtney Davis saw Grenoble score. Mt. Carroll held on for a 15-10 win. From games reported on the road over this past week, Polo Two’s Junior Miss team journeyed to Lanark/Eastland June 4. Before playing so well here June 6, Polo did not play well at Lanark as they dropped a lopsided 18-3 decision.

Leah Calderon led Polo’s offense with a single and a run scoring triple. Polo’s Senior Miss team coached by Jeff and Melissa Frey went up north to Forreston June 3, where they picked up easy wins by margins of 22-7 and 18-12. In game one, Polo picked up 10 base on balls in the top of the first inning. Teah Almassy had Polo’s only hit but that was enough to go along with so many walks as Polo took an early 11-0 lead. Polo added another 10 runs in the top of the second to bolt to a lopsided 21-0 edge. In the bottom of the second, Polo switched pitchers and Forreston quickly took advantage of a new hurler and scored seven runs. A number of walks and several key hits accounted for the uprising. In the top of the third, Bree Cox scored Polo’s last run on a passed ball. Ali Danekas came in to wrap things up for the win. Danekas struck out the final three batters to end the game under the 10 run rule. For the night in game one, Polo banged out eleven hits with Teah

Almassy having two singles and three RBIs. Karlea Frey picked up the win. In game two at Forreston, Polo was the home team as Reylee Katner went out to pitch in her first start of the season. Polo batters came alive in the bottom of the inning. Rebekah Ziegler led off the inning with a single. Six of the next nine batters would also get knocks as Polo plated five runs to go up 11-3 after two. Forreston, however, was yet to be heard from when Polo changed pitchers going to Emmalee Gilbert. Gilbert got the first batter but then had control problems which led to the hosts scoring eight runs to tie the game at eleven. Polo did not waste any time regaining the lead. Three singles and two doubles greeted the Forreston pitcher as Polo pushed across three to runs to go up 14-11 through three. After Polo’s Karlea Frey held Forreston scoreless in the top of the fourth, the offense came alive for Polo punching out six singles and a double to bring in four more runs to go up 18-11. With the win, Polo moved to 2-0 for the campaign.

FATAL ACCIDENT

A Monroe Center man died June 5 when the all-terrain vehicle he was driving struck several trees southwest of Monroe Center. Larry Shearer, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in the 4900 block of North Wendorf Road. According to a press release from Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle, Shearer was operating

an ATV on a residential driveway when the vehicle went out of control and struck the trees, causing him to be ejected. The crash occurred at 7:50 p.m. Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Ogle County Coroner and Monroe Center Fire and Ambulance personnel. The crash remains under investigation.

SHERIFF ARRESTS Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests. June 3 Deputies investigated a two-vehicle crash with injuries at 4:04 p.m. at the intersection of Holcomb and Meridian Roads. A vehicle driven by Beverly Lamkey, 76, of Holcomb, stopped at the intersection but then failed to yield for oncoming traffic. Lamkey continued west into the intersection and struck a northbound pickup truck driven by Jeannette Crown, 77, of Stillman Valley. Traffic is controlled at the intersection by stop signs on Holcomb Road. Traffic

on Meridian Road is not required to stop. Crown was transported to Swedish American Hospital with severe but not life-threatening injuries. Lamkey was ticketed for failure to yield at an intersection. Lynn-Scott-Rock and Stillman Valley Fire Departments assisted at the scene. June 4 Michael P. Remhof, 65, of Leaf River, was arrested for failure to reduce speed and driving under the influence of alcohol after a one-vehicle roil-over crash at 12:48 p.m. in the 400 block of East Third Street. A van driven by Remhof was westbound on Third Street when the vehicle

crossed over into the east bound lane and into the south side ditch striking an embankment. The vehicle continued westbound in the ditch striking a utility pole and tree before rolling over in the ditch and coming to a stop on its side. Remhof was extricated from the vehicle by the Leaf River Fire Department and then transported to Swedish American Hospital by the Leaf River ambulance for treatment of minor injuries. He was given an I-bond at the hospital with a July court date. Robert Hitchcock, 32, of Oregon, was arrested for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving under the influence of alcohol after a one-vehicle roll-over crash at 3:23 p.m. at the inter-

section of Stillman and Holcomb Roads. A car driven by Hitchcock was northbound on Stillman Road when he swerved to miss an animal causing the vehicle to enter the east side ditch and roll over into a field. Hitchcock was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he posted bond and was given a July court date. June 6 Gary L. Long, 67, of Rockford, was arrested for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop at 8:13 a.m. in the 3,000 block of North Stillman Road. OBITUARY DONNA A. CLINE Donna A. Cline, 81, Oregon, died on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 14, 1937 in Oregon, the daughter of Max and Callista (McMullen) Reinders. She was a lifelong Oregon area resident, growing up on a farm. Donna graduated from Oregon High School in 1955. She married Willis B. Cline on July 11, 1980 in Oregon.
