Polo Fire Dept. asking for more taxes in March By Vinde Wells vwells@oglecounty news.com The Polo Fire District will ask residents next month for more money to operate both the fire and ambulance services. Fire district board vice president Mark Bergstrom said Friday that two referenda will be on the March 15 primary ballot. One asks for a property tax increase from 30 to 40 cents per $100 equalized assessed valuation (EAV) for fire department, and the other asks for the same amount for the ambulance service. That means for a house valued at $150,000, the real estate taxes will increase a total of approximately $100, excluding exemptions, if both measures get the nod from voters. Fire district officials will hold a public meeting to answer questions on Monday, Feb. 29 at 7 p.m. at the fire station, 206 S. Franklin Ave. Bergstrom said the fire board decided to seek the referenda due to the increasing costs for both services. “Our operations every year from ATS are going up,” he said. The district contracts with ATS Medical Services, Loves Park, to provide emergency medical technicians around the clock. The state budget crisis has made the situation more difficult, Bergstrom said, because Medicaid and Medicare payments

to transport patients have stopped. “Sometimes it’s also hard to collect if the patient has no insurance,” he said “We haven’t increased ambulance rates since ATS took over.” When the contract with ATS began in 2009, the annual cost to the district was $288,267. The cost for 2016 will be $327,000 with annual increases projected after that. The contract year begins May 1. The ambulance service averages at least 30 calls per month. Fire operations costs, such as insurance, are also going up, Bergstrom said. Although the district has no immediate equipment needs, he said the board is trying to plan ahead. “The price of the equipment has gone up so much,” he said. “The next time we go to get a firetruck, it’s probably going to be a million dollars.” The reason for asking for two increases, Bergstrom explained, is that fire and ambulance revenues cannot be mixed. According to state law, funds levied for fire protection must be used solely for that purpose, and funds levied for the ambulance service must be spent for just that. Bergstrom said voters approved a referendum several years ago for an increase of 30 to 40 cents for the ambulance service. However, he said, that tax hike could not be put into effect because state law at that time did not allow it.

New ACE store opens in Oregon By Vinde Wells vwells@oglecounty news.com Despite a few last minute details, Oregon’s new hardware store is open. “We’re ready for business!” store manager Scott Fauster said Tuesday afternoon as crews did some final set-up at the Ace Hardware store connected to Oregon Snyder Pharmacy at 201 N. Fourth St. “We’re in operation except for some fine-tuning as far as pricing and displays,” he said. “We now have a full-service hardware store, a full-fledged

liquor store, and a pharmacy and gift shop.” The hardware store features a full line of Stihl tools, Fauster said. A grand opening is planned for April 15-17. Kathy Heather was a longtime employee of Basler’s Ace Hardware on Pines Road, which closed in October of 2014, and is now working the aisles in the new store, owned by Tom Felker. She said she’s glad to see her former customers coming in. “It’s good to see the old familiar faces again,” Heather

said. “It’s good to be home again.” Felker started work last year on a 75x130 foot addition on the north side of his pharmacy. The pharmacy and gift store moved into the addition several weeks ago, while work continued on the older portion of the building to transform it into a state-ofthe-art Ace store. The liquor department was added in the new part of the store. Felker purchased a house at 206 N. Third St., northeast of the pharmacy, last year and

tore it down to make room to expand his building and allow for more parking and a loading dock. He purchased the former Bemis Ford building and parking area across the street last fall to enhance the hardware business. Felker said Bemis property may be used for rental equipment associated with the Ace store, as well as pallet goods, such as mulch. Felker also owns a pharmacy and grocery store in Byron, as well as pharmacies in Polo, Dixon, Winnebago, and Poplar Grove.

The Forreston FFA Alumni will hold its 28th Annual Toy Show and Craft Fair on Saturday, March 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Forreston Junior and Senior High School. The Toy Show will be in the Forreston High School gym. The Craft Fair will be in the Forreston Junior High School gym and cafeteria. More than 50 farm toy and craft exhibitors will be at the event. The Toy Show features toy tractors, farm equipment, memorabilia, and collectibles. Proceeds will support the Forreston High School agriculture and FFA programs. The featured collectible tractor is the Oliver 1800 NF with New Idea Loader for $65 each. The Craft Fair will have

a large number of vendors offering crafts, food, candles, and other items. A raffle drawing will be held for $250 and $100 gift certificates at Eickman’s Processing, Seward, and a $50 gift card from Applebee’s. Raffle tickets are $1 each, 6 for $5, and 25 for $20. A silent auction will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants do not need to be present to win. Lunch will also be available featuring Eickman’s meats, and homemade desserts. Antique appraisals return April 3 Roland and Doug Munda are no strangers to the Oregon area, as they have offered expert antique appraisals for the Woman’s Club Annual Antique Show at the Blackhawk Center in Oregon for the past 10 years. This year they will be available on Sunday, April 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Roland was introduced to the world of antiques at an early age and in 1956 opened an antique store at his home in Freeport.

This progressed into his becoming an auctioneer in the 1960s. His son, Doug, was surrounded by antiques and their history his entire life, and so it was only natural for him to join his father in the family auction business. The Highland Community College Board of Trustees approved the first reading of a $5 per credit hour tuition increase beginning in fall during its Feb. 16 regular meeting. This was the first of two readings required to set the new tuition rate. If approved, in-district tuition would increase from $123 per credit hour to $128 per credit hour. The senior citizen rate would increase from $92 to $96 per credit hour. Out-of-district tuition will be set by a formula impacted by other community college tuition rates as they are established. The increase is a direct result of the State of Illinois budget impasse, according to vice president of administrative services, Jill Janssen. Highland has received no state funding for the current fiscal year and most indications are that the budget will not be passed by the state, leaving all community colleges and universities without state funding for the year. For Highland, this is a

loss of about $1.5 million, which is 10 percent of the College’s operating budget. There is no information about the state’s fiscal year 2017 budget at this point, however, most reports indicate that a budget may not be passed until after the November election. “The college has taken steps to reduce expenses, such as limiting expenses to those that are deemed essential, reducing staffing, reducing employee benefits, and negotiating savings with vendors,” said Janssen. “In any fiscal year, the recommendation for any tuition rate increase take into account affordability for students, Highland’s comparability to other colleges’ per credit hour tuition and fees, and Highland’s projected budget.” Trustees discussed the option of revisiting tuition rates prior to the beginning of the spring 2017 semester registration period in September when more may be known about state funding.

Mt. Morris looks to update village plan By Vinde Wells vwells@oglecounty news.com The Mt. Morris Village Board approved spending $11,100 Tuesday on two projects relating to economic development. The board gave the thumbs up to hiring Blackhawk Hills Regional Council to update the village’s Comprehensive Plan at a cost not to exceed $5,800. A regional planning commission, Blackhawk Hills Regional Council provides resources for communities, counties, and other organizations in northwest Illinois on issues such as community and economic development, land use, and natural resource conservation. It includes Ogle, Carroll, Lee, Whiteside, Stephenson and JoDaviess Counties. The board discussed an outline about what would be included in the updated plan. “When its done we will have all new books,” said Mt. Morris Plan Commission member Jerry Stauffer. “It will be almost like a new Comprehensive Plan.” He said the current plan was created by MSA Professional Services, Galena, and adopted in 2007. It was updated once in 2009. Board member Phil

Labash told Stauffer that only $3,000 is available in the Planning Commission’s current budget for the plan update, but said the remainder can be budgeted in the 2016-17 fiscal year which begins May 1. Labash also asked if MSA was considered to do the update. Stauffer said MSA’s cost was three times as much as Blackhawk Hills’. Board member Jeff Pennington voiced concern over the plan being available to the public because the outline proposed including information about the village water system. He said water system information should not be public because of possible terrorism. “In my eyes it’s a matter of security,” he said. Village attorney Rob LeSage said that while the Comprehensive Plan is public information, the water system does not have to be included. The other project approved was a request from the Mt. Morris Economic Development Group (EDG) for $5,500 for expenses related to the Encore Event it will host April 7-9 at the Pinecrest Grove Community Center. The money will come from the funds budgeted for economic development.

Summerhill Huskies club donated several blankets The Summerhill Huskies met on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. for their monthly meeting. A county fundraiser was discussed and the club will be selling trash bags to help raise money for the 4-H ambassadors. A game for the Penny Carnival was decided on. This year’s theme is Space. The Carnival is on March 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Oregon Coliseum. Please come help support the local

4-H clubs. Games are only 25 cents. We talked about fair dates, livestock information, Science Siesta day, the Rockford Ice Hog 4-H day, and the Chicago Cub day. Derek DeVries then had a fun game for us all to play. Then we tied and put together six blankets to donate to children in need. Our next meeting will be on March 14 at 7 p.m. in the Forreston Library.

Hunter Education Classes Hunter education classes will be offered Monday, April 4, and Wednesday, April 6 from 6 to 9 p.m.; and Friday, April 8 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Jarrett Prairie Center. This free three-day class is required by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to obtain a hunting permit. The class covers hunter ethics, firearms, and archery safety. Learn ballroom dancing during a three-course series on Fridays in April and May at Rock River Center, 810 S. 10th St., Oregon. Julie M. Ebert is guest speaker at Rotary Justin Ebert, former Oregon High School ag teacher will be featured speaker at the Oregon Rotary Club Rural Urban Day Luncheon on Wednesday, March 9 at the Blackhawk Steak Pit, Oregon. Ebert is currently a fulltime agriculture instructor at Highland Community College, Freeport.

Rotarians will host farmers or agriculture industry persons as their guests. Ebert teaches a variety of transfer and agricultural occupation courses covering all aspects of agriculture.

He is in his second year at the college and the student enrollment in the agriculture program has nearly doubled. Currently there are some 60 students enrolled. Ebert grew up on a beef feedlot, corn, soybeans, and alfalfa farm in Ashton, and he earned his bachelors degree in Agriculture Education at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

Free tax prep is available at the Rock River Center Call to make an appointment Residents with low to modest incomes can receive free assistance with tax preparation from Tuesday, Feb. 2 through Wednesday, April 6, at the Rock River Center, 801 S. 10th St., Oregon. Appointments will be scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will last one hour. AARP will provide three trained tax aides to prepare tax returns. It is not necessary to be a member of AARP or of a particular age to participate. Participants should go to the Rock River Center prior to their appointment

to pick up pre-registration forms. On the day of the appointment, taxpayers are reminded to bring: A copy of last years’ returns for each person in the household who filed a return. At least one picture ID for themselves and each dependent (such as a driver’s license, passport, etc.) Social Security cards for the entire household. Income statements. Any other official documentation for household members that apply to the year of 2015. In an effort to keep on schedule and not have to wait past the scheduled time for assistance,

participants must arrive at least a half an hour before their appointment time with all pre-registration forms completed. If forms are not ready, appointments will need to be rescheduled. Reservations are now being taken for one-hour appointments. Space is limited at times so early registration is encouraged. FAFSA help offered at SVCC Sauk Valley Community College is offering two free programs during February and March. All students and families are invited to receive free assistance with filing the 2016 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Sauk Financial Assistance staff will be on hand through March to help filers in the Sauk Valley area complete this important form. More than $150 billion in federal grants, loans, and work study funds are only available to those who complete and submit the FAFSA form.

Pinewood Derby was held for Cub Scout Pack 337 By Ginger Albano Den Leader

Cub Scout Pack 337, Polo, held its annual Pinewood Derby on Jan. 30. Twentynine racers were present to display and race the awesome cars they built. In the Tiger Den, three racers battled it out with Henry Donaldson taking first, Jayden Otten coming in second, and Robbie Harazin in third. Robbie also took the Best Design award for the Tiger den. For the Wolf Den, seven drivers were present. Cole Chesnut took top honors, with Carson

Coffman in second and Kason Allen in third. Kason Allen won the Best Design award for his den. The Bears had five boys vying for position. Jeffrey Donaldson was at the top of the heap after racing was done, with Gage Zeigler in second and Billy Lowry in third. Once again, the third fastest car, Billy Lowry, was awarded the Best Design trophy for his den. For the Webelos Den, nine racers showed their stuff. Ben Ryan sped away from the rest with first place, Alex Albano was second,

and Jacob Monaco was close behind in third, with less than 0.1 seconds separating second and third place. Gage Lagee took home the honor of Best Design for this den. The Webelos II Den, in their last Pinewood Derby as Cub Scouts, had five boys racing. Cayden Webster flew down the track fastest, with Carson Jones in second and Spencer Doeden in third. Eli Baumann won Best Design for his den. The Fastest of the Pack Award was presented to Cayden Webster. Chamber Chatter Polo Public Library will hold a job fair on Thursday, Feb. 25 from 4 to 7 p.m. The fair is being sponsored by the Hughes Resources and are now taking applications for job openings in the Sauk Valley and Freeport area. Ethan Cain had a tough road to earn third place By Randy Holland No matter where he fell in the bracket, Polo’s Ethan Cain had a big bump in his road to the state championship at 195 pounds. Finishing second in the Princeton Sectional due to illness, he ended up on the side of the bracket with returning champion Wesley Kibler of St. JosephOgden, 43-0 coming into the tournament and ranked at the top all season. Had he won the Sectional title, he would have had second ranked Riley Kauzlaric of Coal City in his way. Kauzlaric’s only 195 pound loss in the season was to Kibler, and he avenged that loss with a dominating 9-6

win over Kibler in the final to take the championship. Kibler proved to be a big bump for Cain in the second round. “He got on my leg and it was over quick”, Cain said. “I knew he would be tough and he was. He’s in the finals.” The move was a switch in the second period with Kibler leading 2-0. As he came out of the turn, Kibler caught an arm bar and worked it into a stack to pin Cain at 3:22. The loss knocked him to the road for third place, and he went down that road like it was as smooth as new laid blacktop. There was a steep hill to climb at the end, but Cain found a gear in the third

place match to defeat third ranked Bobby Bradley of Vandalia 1-0 for the bronze. It is hard to call a one point win dominating, but this one was. Cain was the aggressor throughout the match, just missing on a spinning takedown late in the first. It was the same in the second. After a quick escape, he pushed the whole period. “He was really strong and it was hard to get through his defenses”, Cain said. But Ethan showed strength of his own in the third period, riding tough for the whole two minutes. He was working for a chicken wing for the last minute. He couldn’t turn, but Bradley was completely controlled and never had anything that was close to an

escape. Cain was happy with the result. “I am proud of my tournament,” he said. “I lost to a really strong guy, but I went right through the rest of with pins and a major decision”. The major decision was over Dallas Appleman of Amboy in the wrestleback semifinal. Appleman would have been his opponent in the Sectional final had Cain not been forced to forfeit. Asked if he thought the result would have been the same last week if he had been healthy, he was sure that it would. “I don’t think there would have been any difference,” Cain said. Head Coach Justin Zigler agreed that it was a great tournament for Cain. “With the class of wrestlers at this weight, and a defending State champ in the mix, it is going to be tough”, Zigler said. “Ethan did not let the loss affect him and he went right back to the way he has been wrestling all year”. Zigler had high praise for his wrestler. “Cain has just had a great season”, he said. “He was at the top of every tournament but the Sectional. He was outstanding wrestler at Kewanee and our tournament. It was a great year.” He also said it was going to be tough to see him move on. Turn to B2

Geese too much for Cardinals By Chris Johnson cxjohnson@oglecounty news.com Giving up 12 unanswered points to start a regional game is not the start the Forreston Cardinals were looking for Tuesday night. Spotting 3-seed Kewanee (Wethersfield) 12 points was a hole that was too much to handle as Forreston lost 6242, ending their season. Sophomore Brandon Schneiderman finally got the team on the scoreboard with a trey. It was three and a half minutes into the game and the team was down 12-3. Schneiderman would add another three later in the quarter, but the damage was done and the Cardinals fell behind 15-6 at the end of the first quarter. “Brandon stepped up for us,” said coach Travis Ross. “It is not easy to play on varsity as a sophomore and he did.” Schneiderman drained two more threes in the half and had 12 of the teams 20 points at the half. Jarod Groshans, another sophomore, had five points at the half. Down 16 at the half, Ross had to try and find a way to break the Flying Geese defense. “Credit to our kids because they played hard,” said Ross. “Defensively we were average.” Wethersfield made adjustments to put more pressure on the Cardinals in the second half. “We covered up the basket well tonight, but we did not guard the three in the first half,” said Wethersfield coach Jeff Parsons. “I was not thrilled to see Forreston on the schedule because they are a tough school to play on their court.” The fouls were adding up and the referee called a

technical on Forreston for a player who mouthed off to the referee. Forreston found itself down 44-23 midway through the third. After Wethersfield had a 30-point lead in the fourth quarter the pressure let up for the Cardinals. The game opened up and Forreston ended being defeated by 20 points, 62-42. “This is the time of year you see good opponents and tonight we played well,” said Parsons. “It will be nice to

see the second matchup.” The late game was between AFC and Milledgeville. The winner of that game was scheduled to play Wethersfield Wednesday night. For Forreston, Tuesday was the end of a tough season. The team finished 6-21 after a trip down state last season. “It has been a difficult year for the Cardinals,” said Ross. “We did not talk about last year this season because it is two different chapters in Forreston basketball. That

said, it is not easy to follow last year. It is what it is.” Ross expects his team will learn from this season and could be the team to beat next winter. “We had sophomores playing on varsity gaining experience,” he said. “I am excited to see how we do next season.” The team graduates six seniors, but has seven juniors and six sophomores returning. AFC defeated Milledgeville 64-49 Tuesday.

Marcos peaking at the right time By Ty Reynolds treynolds@saukvalley.com Injuries, illness, off nights shooting the ball – name any kind of adversity a basketball team can face, and the Polo Marcos have dealt with it this season. But now back to full strength, the Marcos are closing their season on a strong note – they’ve won eight straight games by an average of 28 points – and feel they’re hitting their stride at the perfect time heading into next week’s regionals. “It feels like all of us are mentally and physically peaking right now,” senior post player Wyatt Patterson said. “We hit a pretty tough stretch at the end of December and January, but we’re kicking it into gear and hitting this great patch at the end – and I’d rather have it that way than having a great patch earlier in the year and getting the rough patch at the end.” Seniors Brad Cavanaugh (injury) and Brooks Grobe (illness) are back for Polo (19-9), and their presence has been uplifting for their teammates. Led by a closeknit core of seniors who have had success in varsity sports for the past 4 years, having all of their weapons at their disposal has the Marcos thinking big. “We’ve been really clicking offensively and defensively, and everybody is back in their role that they’re comfortable with,” coach Matt Messer said. “Being senior-dominated, these guys are starting to play with urgency, and that leads to focus and energy. These seniors had big goals they wanted to accomplish this year, and we’ve missed out on some of those because of some adversity. semifinals. After the regular season they’ve been through, the Marcos don’t feel like there will be any added pressure in the playoffs. Instead, they’re looking forward to having fun with everybody back in the fold. “We’re getting out of our slump, and the chemistry we’ve been lacking, we got it back,” senior guard Peyton Glawe said. “We’ve been through a lot this season, and that will help us in any situation. We know we’re always in the game as long was stay focused, play tough defense, keep the ball moving on offense, and get everyone contributing on both ends of the floor.” That confidence stems from several successful sports seasons in their Polo careers, something the seniors feel they can rely on when things get intense. “We all know what it takes to win, because we’ve done it in all our sports,” Patterson said. “We’ve all won a lot in our careers, and that makes us feel like we can compete with anyone as long as we do what we know we’re capable of doing.”

Cain advanced to quarterfinal against Kibler with an opening round pin over James Cox of Wilmington. After a power half for two points and two chicken wings for three points, Cain reversed to

start the second and caught another wing for the fall at 2:37. After Kibler, he met Zach Kincaide of Alton Woodriver and made quick work of it, scraping for the turn and switching to a reverse half and posting an arm at 1:30. He was nearly as quick against Robbie Carey of Mercer County in the consolation quarterfinal, hitting a duck under takedown to the back a

minute into the match and pinning at 1:35. That brought up seventh ranked Appleman, coming down from a 5-2 loss to Kauzlaric in the semifinal. Cain had two takedowns in the first period, the second into a cradle for two points. It was a cradle and a tilt for three points each in the second, and Cain spent the third on the bottom in the 14-2 win. Appleman finished sixth.

It was another state individual finals wrestling tournament that proved that Northern Illinois still has the best wrestling around. In a tough tournament, with many upsets, wrestlers advancing from the Polo Regional and the Princeton Sectional filled the podium at the (nearly) newly renovated State Farm Center in Champaign last weekend. Eighty four medals are given out and the Princeton Sectional accounted for 32 of them, including eight championships, two second places, and eight third places. Nine of the 14 championship matches had wrestlers from the north and the 170 pound final featured two. And of those 32 medalists, fourteen came from the Polo Regional. Eleven medals including 106 pound champion Tyler Fleetwood of Fulton were won by wrestlers coming from the Sherrard Regional. The Stanford Olympia Sectional had 19 place winners, but just one first place. The Carterville Sectional

sent 18 to the podium and won three titles, while the Plano Sectional had two champions among their 15 medalists Top ranked Dakota, a state champion machine, crowned three more this year. Alec Henze got his second title at 113 pounds, Greg Krulas took his second state 145 pound championship in three trips to the title match, and Nate Olson took his second title at 160 pounds. At 170, Andrew Wenger was second to Colton Cashmore of Alden-Hebron, also from the Princeton Sectional. Alex Porter was fifth at 120 pounds. Top ranked Jared Packer was upset in the 152 pound semifinal and finished third. Only one qualifier from Dakota failed to get a medal. The only other school in the tournament with more than one champion was Byron, also coming from Polo, who got second state titles from Brady Wilsie at 126 pounds and Nolan Baker at 132 pounds. Their other entrant in the tournament, Jacob Elsbury, finished third in a good

tournament for the Tigers. Other medalists who advanced from Polo were Ethan Cain of Polo, third at 195 pounds, and Austin Vincent, 113, Rahveon Valentine, 138, both fifth and Hunter Luke 126, sixth, all from Lena-Winslow. Jared VanVleet of Stillman Valley was sixth at 120 pounds. In addition to Fleetwood and Cashmore, heavyweight John Barnes of Peru St. Bede took a title advancing from Princeton. Other medalists from there were Dylan Binion of Erie-Prophetstown, second at 182 pounds, Josh Schrank,106, from Rockford Lutheran, Stone Engle, 120, Mercer County, and Hunter Spengler, 126, Sherrard, all placing third. Placing fourth were Grady Todd of Erie, 138, Sam Ryner of Sherrard, 170, and Taylor Fleetwood of Fulton, 220. Placing fifth were James Schnerre of Orion, and Niles Ager of Rock Falls. Coming in sixth were Luke Wallace of Lutheran, Tony Heinitz of Fulton, and Dallas Appleman of Amboy.

Byron advances to finals of the Class 2A girls tournament The Big Northern Conference has one girls basketball team playing in the state finals this Friday and Saturday in Red Bird Arena. Byron’s Lady Tigers will be one of four teams battling for the Class 2A crown in Normal after eliminating Peoria Christian 47-36 at the Monmouth Super-Sectional on Monday night.

After a slow first quarter start on Monday, the Lady Tigers (31-3) changed up their defense from zone to man in the second quarter and jumped out to a 22-16 lead at the half. Paige Holloway chased down a loose ball midway through the third quarter and converted a layup to make it 30-18. Bailey Burrows made

the backend of a 1-1 to make the score 31-18 at the end of the third quarter. Byron stretched its lead to 13 after Lexi DeVries made two free throws and Burrows found Holloway open underneath to make it 38-25 with 3:24 to play. Peoria Christian fought back to close within seven points, 41-34 with 1:21 left,

but Byron took care of the basketball and made their free throws down the stretch en route to the win. DeVries led Byron with 21 points. Byron finished in second place in conference play with a 12-2 record behind Rockford Lutheran. Lutheran won the conference with a perfect 14-0 record and

accounted for two of Byron’s three losses. The other Lady Tiger loss was to Burlington Central on Dec. 3, 56-42. Lutheran lost to Burlington Central in Class 3A Rochelle Sectional semi-final on Monday night, 51-39. Lutheran had beaten Stillman Valley, another BNC foe, 54-37 on Feb. 18 to win the championship of the Rock

Let’s make it simple and say prices are a $1 a gallon less than what they had been a year or two ago. What if 240 people go to Wednesday’s game, with an average of three riders per vehicle? With the excitement building on Friday, an extra 180 people make the trip with the same three riders per vehicle. That’s a total of 220 cars for both days.

The round trip is approximately 200 miles and if each car gets 30 mph, the per vehicle cost is $9.93 based upon $1.49/ gal gas. For both days, the approximate costs incurred by Polo drivers overall would be $2,184. If gas were $1 a gallon higher, that cost would be $3,652. The difference is a savings of $1,468 to Polo basketball consumers. It may not seem like a huge amount, but if one looks at the whole state and the 1,418 post-season games played by boys and girls, it is significant.

After a long trip to Stark County for the final game of the football season, it’s on the road south again to the next county down for the Polo basketball team and its fan base. There’s been some grumbling about Polo having to travel that far, but the more I think about, the more I am excited about the opportunity. The atmosphere at Brimfield promises to be

faithful. My gut feeling is that Brimfield is very concerned about having a late-surging team like Polo in the regional. They know of Polo’s athleticism because of the success of the football team and the return of 4-year starter Brad Cavanaugh to the lineup. Another reason for Brimfield to fear Polo is that other than perhaps Chicago Hope, the Marcos are the best No. 4 seed in 1A. Remember, in the first Associated Press poll, Polo was ranked No. 5 in the state. I’m sure Brimfield probably does because they were one spot ahead of the Marcos. Brimfield has won five of the last six regionals, with at least 29 wins in each of those

Remember to recycle your electronics on Feb. 26 Drop off items on Fri., Feb. 26 The next monthly electronics recycling dropoff for Ogle County residents will be Friday, Feb. 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. sharp at the Ogle County Annex Building, 909 W. Pines Rd., Oregon.

The event is coordinated by the Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD). Volunteers are needed to help unload vehicles and sort and stack electronics. Lunch and a t-shirt will be offered to volunteers. Items accepted include all televisions, computer hardware, computer cable,

monitors, laptops, tablets, printers, FAX machines, phone systems, stereo equipment, and DVD/ VCR players. Additional items include video gaming systems, cell phones, radios, digital clocks, CFL bulbs, rechargeable batteries, and printer cartridges. Microwave ovens are

accepted at a cost of $5. Items not accepted include vacuum cleaners, smoke detectors, power tools, yard tools, coffee makers, fryers, ovens, white goods (appliances), air conditioners, dehumidifiers, or humidifiers. An unlimited number of televisions can be brought in for recycling, however

dismantled and scavenged items are considered business electronics and are not accepted through this program. OCSWMD staff will be on hand to assist unloading and sorting of electronics. Checks brought in for microwave recycling, made out to Ogle County Solid Waste Management

Department. This event is open to Ogle County residents only. Residents of other counties, businesses who wish to recycle electronics, or volunteers, should call the OCSWMD at 815-732-4020 for more information. For a full list of accepted items, go to www.oglecounty. org.

9:19 p.m. for the unlawful possession of cannabis following a traffic stop near the intersection of Freeport Road and Ill. 26. McKnight was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

On Feb. 17, deputies responded to an address in the 4000 block of W. Pond Road in Leaf River for a report of theft of money. After completing an investigation into the incident, Mary C. Peters, 46, Byron, was arrested Feb. 22 for forgery and felony theft. Peters was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held pending an appearance before a judge.

Sheriff Arrests From B3 Feb. 20 At approximately 2:30 p.m., deputies responded to a one-vehicle accident in the 7,500 block of North Ill. 2. After an investigation, it was determined that a 2000 GMC Sierra pick-up, being driven by Edward G. Lauren, 50, Byron, was traveling north when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Lauren refused medical treatment at the scene.

He was found to be intoxicated and was subsequently arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail for processing and is due to appear in Ogle County court at a later date. At approximately 9:30 a.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 100 block of E. Fifth Street in Leaf

River. The vehicle was a blue Chevrolet Cavalier being driven by Dan J. Knaub, 27, Leaf River. The Ogle County K-9 Unit searched the vehicle and the drug paraphernalia was the only illegal substance found in the vehicle. Knaub was arrested for driving while license revoked and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he

posted bond and is due to appear in Ogle County Court at a later date. James D. Beneventi, 38, Leaf River, was arrested at 9:30 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant. He was given the Citizen of the Year award in 2015. He was past president of the Leaf River Firemen’s Association and the Forrestville Valley Education Foundation. Bill has been a member of the Ogle County Farm Bureau for more than 50 years, a life member of the Mt. Morris Moose Lodge, and Samuel H Davis Lodge No 96. He was also director of

the German American State Bank for 17 years. During his busy life he always found time to go golfing with his friends and family. He also enjoyed camping at Woodhaven, vacationing with his family, and keeping family traditions going over the years. He enjoyed his winter retreat in Florida. Survivors include daughter, Valorie (Dean) Roberts, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; son, Brad (Roxy) Lomax, German Valley, daughters, Kim (Dave) Cox, Leaf River, and Jodi Miley, Murphysboro; 11 grandkids; and nine greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sweetheart, Nola; sister, Louise; and granddaughter, Christina. Funeral services were held on Feb. 23 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home, Forreston, with Uncle Bill Stees officiating. Burial was at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Freeport. Obituaries Dr. James T. “Doc” O’Connor Dr. James T. “Doc” O’Connor, 86, Polo, died on Friday, Feb. 19, 2016, at Polo Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Doc was born on Oct. 21, 1929 in Ionia County, Michigan, the son of James F. and Katherine (Lawless) O’Connor. He married Dorothy Westrick on Feb. 22, 1952, in Ionia, Michigan. Doc was an avid Michigan State fan, was past president of Northern Illinois Veterinary Medical Association, and served on the board of directors for Polo National Bank and Edgewood Golf Course. He was one of the founders of the Polo Nursing Home, a member of the Polo Lions

Club and St. Mary Church, Polo. Doc wrote a column for the Tri-County Press, loved to travel, golf, hunt, or anything else outdoors. Guy J. “Bill” Lomax Guy J. “Bill” Lomax, 88, Leaf River, died on Friday, Feb. 19, 2016 at Serenity Hospice and Home, Oregon. He was born on Aug. 4, 1927 in Freeport, the son of Guy and Manta (Johnson) Lomax. He married his high school sweetheart Nola (Miller) Lomax on June 3, 1947. She died in December of 1988. They resided in Forreston before moving to Leaf River in 1958, where he began his career with Country Companies from 1957-1969. He then had the opportunity to be a field representative for the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness. He was one of the founders of the Illinois Lions Glaucoma Unit and also the Eye Donor Collection Centers and Hospitals in the State of Illinois. He returned to selling insurance and retired from there after 35 years. He joined the Leaf River Lions Club where he became District Governor and then International Director. During his time of being an International Director, he received five Presidential Awards, President Award for Leaf River, and the highest award being the Ambassador
