U.S. farm income is under immense pressure, as input costs have increased dramatically while crop prices have fallen sharply, resulting in margins that have been at or below breakeven for several consecutive years. Farmers urgently need economic assistance, according to a new market intel report from the American Farm Bureau Federation. The key takeaways of the report are: • Farm financial stress is severe and persistent. Margins are below breakeven for many crops, working capital has been eroded, Chapter 12 farm bankruptcies are on the rise and, according to a recent survey of commercial lenders by the American Bankers Association, profits will remain elusive going into 2026. • Trade losses have compounded economic pressures. Farmers have experienced multibillion-dollar export declines in some of their largest trading markets, including China. Trade frameworks have been announced, but increased export volumes have yet to materialize, and cash prices remain at or below levels seen in early 2025. • Without action, long-term viability is at risk. Additional financial support is critical to offset trade losses and provide a bridge until farm bill enhancements from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act go into effect. This will stabilize the farm economy, sustain rural economies and maintain affordable food prices. “Input costs have increased dramatically over the last few years – up in some cases 30%, 40%, 50% – but at the same time, commodity prices have come crashing down,” said John Newton, AFBF vice president of public policy and economic analysis. “For many crops, they’re at historically low levels. “Trade has slowed, and the effect is we’ve had margins that have been at or below breakeven for many crops and specialty crops for many years in a row, and that’s starting to impact farm financial conditions.” Trade losses heightened the challenges in an already difficult economic environment. “As the Chinese backed out of the market, that put further pressure on prices,” Newton said. “As farmers were harvesting a crop, many of them didn’t

Cows brace for winter weather at a farm west of La Porte in northwest Indiana. have storage and had to sell at harvest-time lows. “So, even though we’ve got a framework in place and the Chinese are starting to buy product, for a lot of growers, the economic benefits of these frameworks may come too late.” While some help was made available in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed by President Donald Trump on July 4, and the American Relief Act, which was signed by President Joe Biden last December and mainly served as yet another one-year extension of the 2018 farm bill, that assistance won’t reach farmers until sometime next year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has pledged $12 billion in economic support to help offset trade losses, Newton said. “We hope to see details of that in the next few weeks, but the One Big Beautiful Bill, while it made a historic investment in farm bill risk management programs, those benefits won’t materialize on the farm for over a year,” he said.
Ethanol could fuel economic rebound
At a time when the farm economy is facing a downward turn, farmers are looking for expanded market opportunities. Increased biofuel production could be one avenue to boost farm revenue and
support the entire rural economy. One simple solution for expanding biofuel demand would be to allow for year-round E15 in American gas pumps. Most gasoline sold across the country is blended with 10% ethanol, but 15% blends are becoming increasingly common, particularly here in the Midwest, where most corn is grown. By the way, E15 gasoline generally costs at least 10 cents less a gallon than E10 gasoline. But the Environmental Protection Agency has previously prohibited its sale during the summer over concerns that its use during that driving season could increase smog. For the economic and energy security benefits of E15 to be fully realized, the marketplace needs long-term certainty – and there’s a straightforward path to make this possibility a reality. Right now, the ethanol industry relies on the EPA to grant a series of shortterm waivers to sell E15 in the summer. A congressional fix to get year-round E15 that does not rely on those emergency waivers would allow producers to have some stability and know that they will be able to blend ethanol all year.

Sending your child to 4-H Camp will allow them to create memories they will carry with them through adulthood. 4-H camp teaches youths to make good decisions, build their self-confidence, become independent, and gain the ability to work well with others. These skills will help youths develop into strong adult leaders. In addition, 4-H camp counselors devote much of their personal time to ensure today’s campers have the same great experience they did as children.
Campers at 4-H Camp will check in from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, June 14, and check out from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18. During camp week, youths will engage in a variety of activities designed to challenge, educate, and entertain. Two or three free-choice periods will be offered daily, including activities such as hiking, shooting sports, arts and crafts, crate stacking, team-building challenges, zip-lining, swimming and more. Evening activities will be provided by the 4-H camp counselors and include campfires, a games night and a dance or talent show. 4-H Camp is open to all boys and girls, ages 8-14 by June 14, 2026. 4-H membership is not required; however, all participants are expected to adhere
to the same high behavioral standards expected of 4-H members. Youths need to be interested and excited to have a week of outdoor fun, away from TV and technology. The early bird cost is $325 for 4-H members and $375 for non-4-H members until March 1. After that date, the price goes up to $350 for 4-H members and $400 for non4-H members. Fire Department provides toys to nearly 150 children By CHARLENE BIELEMA cbielema@shawmedia.com Santa Claus made a special appearance Friday night in Morrison. Actually, make that two Santa Clauses, two Mrs. Clauses and two elves, riding in firetrucks and delivering bag after bag of toys to nearly 150 children through the Morrison Fire Department’s Caring for Our Community Toy Drive. The toys and donations to support the program were collected over the past several months. As that was happening, Morrison School District families received information from their schools about the annual toy distribution and were invited to sign up. All Morrison students can sign up to receive toys. “This is 100% from the community,” Morrison Fire Chief Rob Vegter said of

An in-town route map listed 60 stops, with four more outside of town. The firefighters said it would take about two hours to get through the list of deliveries. Professional license holders can be scam targets VIEWS Randy Meier A physician in Des Moines, Iowa, came extremely close to falling for a sophisticated imposter scam. The doctor received a phone call from someone naming himself as an investigator for the Iowa Board of Medicine, the state agency that licenses and regulates physicians. The caller said the Board of Medicine just suspended the doctor’s medical license because the FBI issued an arrest warrant for the doctor for drug trafficking. The caller went on to say authorities in Texas seized drugs at the international border and linked that drug shipment directly to the doctor. The caller told the doctor that the FBI placed her under surveillance 15 days earlier. The doctor was beyond terrified. “The panic was overwhelming” and “the fear of arrest … and total ruin was paralyzing,” she later told authorities. The caller offered to act as her
advocate. The caller said the Board of Medicine recognized she was innocent, but someone was framing her. To put the brakes on the FBI, the caller urged the doctor to cooperate and post a $19,747 bond and emphasized total secrecy. The doctor reacted just like the scammers intended: “I pictured being handcuffed, my career obliterated, my family broken.” To drive home the urgency of the moment, the caller directed the doctor to go to a nearby UPS store, where faxed documents awaited her. There, she found a notice that looked official from the Iowa Board of Medicine about suspending her medical license. She also found a “federal bond and protocol agreement” written under the U.S. Department of Justice letterhead, with a load of legal jargon demanding the bond payment and threatening severe consequences if the doctor told anyone. “I felt completely isolated and trapped,” she reported. Things looked pretty dire for the doctor. Her mental state was in turmoil, but now she caught a break. “I’m not sure what happened next, but something made me question it
all,” she said. The doctor realized she lived just minutes away from the offices of the Iowa Board of Medicine in Des Moines. With the caller still on the phone, she drove there and walked in. The Board of Medicine staff talked her down and confirmed that she was talking to a scammer. The doctor finally hung up on a screaming scammer. This scary story highlights a couple of things: • If you hold a professional license, a great deal of detailed information about you and your work is public information, likely published online by regulatory authorities. This increases the chance of a targeted scam attempt against you. Scammers can tailor their phony, scary stories using language and background narrowly specific to your profession. Many people, besides physicians, hold professional licenses. The list includes nurses, educators, pharmacists, stockbrokers, insurance agents, accountants and more. • Scammers are skillful at creating official-looking government and professional documents, which they offer up as proof of their authenticity. In the last six months, fraud victims showed
me fake IRS tax returns, nondisclosure agreements, prenuptial agreements, wills, legal contracts, police records, earnings reports, invoices and news releases, just to name some. And often they just completely fabricate documents, such as the “federal bond and protocol agreement” you read about in this story. Criminals targeted the Des Moines doctor with a detail-heavy attack very specific to her circumstances, but the basic techniques used against the doctor work in almost all scams: • Scammers scare or excite people. • Scammers lie about who they are. • Scammers pressure people to act immediately. • Scammers work to isolate their victims.

Sheriff responds to governor’s comments on SAFE-T Act revisions VIEWS John Booker
Gov. JB Pritzker has announced that he is open to hearing ideas on how to make our streets safer and consider potential changes to the SAFE-T Act. I want to thank the governor for recognizing that the SAFE-T Act needs to be revisited, and I appreciate his willingness to meet with law enforcement leaders across the state. That acknowledgment is an import-
ant first step. Law enforcement across Illinois has raised consistent concerns about aspects of the SAFE-T Act that limit our ability to keep violent offenders off the streets and hold repeat criminals accountable. My position always has been straightforward: We support reforms that improve fairness, but not at the expense of public safety. If someone is charged with the murder of a child, or with setting a person on fire in a transit train, they should not walk out of jail after a hearing. Individuals accused of the most horrific and violent crimes are a danger to the community, and the law must reflect that reality. Our resi-
dents deserve to be protected from those who have shown a clear disregard for human life. We must put our strongest effort toward standing up for victims of crime – not creating pathways for violent offenders to return to the streets. Victims deserve justice, respect, and a system that prioritizes their safety. They should never feel that the rights of offenders outweigh their own. As sheriff of Whiteside County, my priority is simple – protecting the people who live, work, and raise their families here. Any changes to state law must give deputies and police officers the tools they need to do the
job safely and responsibly. I encourage the governor and legislators to engage directly with frontline law enforcement. We see the real-world impact of these policies every day. If the goal is truly safer neighborhoods, our input must be part of the conversation. I stand ready to provide clear, practical recommendations that strengthen public safety, uphold victims’ rights, and ensure accountability for those who commit violent crimes. The people of Whiteside County deserve nothing less.

marketing on Facebook,” he said. “Word of mouth really allowed my business to grow and expand.” Twenhafel is a junior at the University of Illinois where he is studying crop sciences. “I am looking forward to a career in the ag industry, as well as being involved in the family farm,” he said. “I am using the skill sets that I learned through BT Lawn Care to carry me into my future goals and aspirations.” For FFA members, Twenhafel’s advice is to take advantage of the opportunities in FFA. “In 2018, when I started with one lawn, I never expected to have a client base of over 100 different customers,” he said. “I didn’t know my SAE would eventually mean receiving the highest award from
the FFA organization, so always be optimistic.” Erbsen was quite surprised to be selected the American Star winner. “I certainly was not expecting it because I thought that the other contestants were a little more experienced than I was,” he said. “I didn’t know what to do when I was on stage.” The FFA members’ parents, Carl and Becky Erbsen, received the Honorary American FFA Degree at the convention. “And this was fun to do with my cousin. She was always there whenever I had questions,” Erbsen said about Delana Erbsen, who was one of four finalists for the American Star in Agriscience. “My project relates to working at our home farm, Erbacres Holsteins, along with working for a neighboring farm,
Gunderson Family Dairy, where we utilize four robots to milk about 240 Holstein cows,” he said. “On our farm, a lot of what I do with my record book revolves around equipment repair and maintenance and I do a lot of feeding,” Erbsen said. “I am involved with forage, too. We produce about 100 acres of forage products every year including six crops of hay a year,” he said. “I’m involved in every stage of the growth and harvest of that.” Erbsen encourages other FFA members to find good people to work with. “I had a great FFA adviser who walked me through every step of the way,” he said about his adviser, Cindy Feltmeyer. “And awesome supporting parents.” The national convention was the last FFA activity for Erbsen, who has been a member of the organization for six years. “I hung up my jacket for the final time and it was fun to go out like that,” he said. “Especially doing it with my cousin and my family altogether, along with some friends from home that were always with us throughout this whole journey.” Erbsen is a junior at Iowa State University, where his major is agricultural systems technology with a minor in agronomy. After completing his college degree, he is leaning toward working at a John Deere dealership or working for the John Deere company in Moline in northwestern Illinois. “I am interested in working with automation systems and autonomous tractors,” he said. “I’m so happy and proud of them,” said Bunselmeyer, the FFA executive director. “It’s been really fun – all three of them were extremely successful FFA members in their proficiency and agriscience areas.” “The capstone is their American FFA Degree, but they got the crown upon the capstone by being named a Star finalist,” she said. “I’m incredibly blessed to have this job because I get to witness that journey, watch it unfold and culminate in great success for them.”

Blake Twenhafel from the Wesclin FFA Chapter is the American Star in Agribusiness and Nevin Erbsen from the Eastland FFA Chapter is the American Star in Agricultural Placement. The students received these awards at the 98th National FFA Convention & Expo. “This is the first time Illinois has had two Star winners in the same year and only six other states have had that happen,” said Mindy Bunselmeyer, executive director of the Illinois Association FFA. “This is so exciting for those students and what it means to them, their advisers, their schools and their community,” she said. “The root of Illinois FFA success is based on what happens at the local level in the chapter, so to see that happen for two of our communities within the same year builds so much excitement.” When Twenhafel heard his name announced on the National FFA stage as the American Star, he could hardly believe it. “It was something I never knew would actually come to fruition,” he said. “It was an ending to my FFA career that I will forever remember.” The FFA member’s parents, Michael and Angie Twenhafel, and his adviser, Matt Fisher, also were on stage during the award presentation. “Having them next to me meant a lot,” he said. “It was really amazing and I am grateful for the award. JB Pritzker on Dec. 16 signed legislation that raises $1.5 billion to fill a fiscal hole for the Chicago area’s public transit agencies that was set to kick in next year. Senate Bill 2111 doesn’t include any statewide tax increases but relies on increased sales tax in the Chicago area and a diversion of funds from the state’s Road Fund, Capitol News Illinois reported. Reaction to the measure has drawn mixed reviews along not only party lines but regional ones as well, with lawmakers outside the Chicago area saying it will only bring in $129 million for transit agencies outside the suburban Chicago market. State Sen. Li Arellano Jr., R-Dixon, is among those against it, calling the legislation burdensome and unfair. “This was a Chicago bailout written behind closed doors and passed while Illinoisans were asleep,” Arellano said. “Pritzker and his democratic allies robbed suburban and downstate families today to cover up years of failure in Chicago.” Arellano represents Illinois’ 37th Senate District, which includes all or parts of Bureau, DeKalb, Henry, La Salle, Lee, Marshall, Ogle, Peoria, Rock

Island, Stark, Whiteside and Woodford counties. He said his concerns include: • Approximately $550 million per year will be redirected away from funds traditionally used for local roads, bridges and transportation projects in rural and suburban Illinois and sent to Chicago. • $80 million is diverted directly from the State Road Fund to support Chicago’s transit system. • The legislation authorizes a 45-cent toll increase per vehicle, increasing costs for commuters statewide and disproportionately impacting drivers in districts with longer tollway stretches. • The bill was passed during a veto session at 3 a.m., limiting public awareness and media scrutiny at the time of the vote. “This transit legislation was the ultimate betrayal of residents in the 37th District,” Arellano said. “Families and commuters here drive some of the longest stretches of tollway in the state, meaning they will pay more than almost anyone else. While our communities lose critical funding, Chicago gets another bailout.” Legislators in the suburban area were split, with Republicans opposing
the bill and Democrats backing it. “We’re creating a better public transit system that is financially accountable to taxpayers,” state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, said. “These are necessary reforms that will strengthen transit agency operations, improve paratransit for individuals with disabilities and is helping meet the demands of local commuters for years to come. I’m looking forward to these needed changes.” She called the law a “transformational package of reforms” that brings Pace, CTA and Metra together into “one modern, efficient system. The new Northern Illinois Transit Authority (NITA) is a major step toward a transit system that gets people where they need to go affordably, protects taxpayers and offers a better experience for riders and workers.” By contrast, Republican State Sen. Sue Rezin of Morris said Senate Bill 2111 redirects funding away from downstate roads and infrastructure and raises taxes in suburban communities “to bail out Chicago’s failing transit system.” “I am deeply disappointed by Gov. Pritzker’s decision to sign Senate Bill 2111 into law,” she said. “This legislation takes hundreds of millions of dollars meant for downstate roads and bridges and redirects it to bail out Chicago’s failing transit system, while suburban families are hit with higher taxes to cover the cost.” Likewise, Sen. Darby Hills, R-Barrington Hills, who voted against the bill, said suburban families are being hit with higher taxes and toll hikes, “this
time to bail out Mayor Brandon Johnson and the CTA. Families are already struggling under the rising cost of everyday life, and this law makes it even harder to afford the daily necessities they rely on.” “On top of that, the law hands greater control of our transit system to a Chicago-dominated board that is not accountable to our communities, leaving us to pay more while having less say,” he said in a written statement. The new law takes money away from regions outside the Chicago area, funds that could be used to improve local infrastructure needs, he said. The law sends funds north “even though many of these families will never use Chicago’s buses or trains. Downstate communities rely on those funds to maintain safe roads, support local economies and keep people connected,” Hills said. “Illinois families deserve better than another tax-and-spend plan that puts Chicago first and leaves the rest of the state behind.” The Regional Transportation Authority, Chicago Transit Agency, Metra commuter rail and Pace Suburban Bus collectively faced a $230 million funding shortfall in 2026. Capitol News Illinois reported the funding deficit was projected to grow to $834 million in 2027 and $937 million in 2028. Without action in Springfield to plug that gap, the transit agencies said they could have been forced to cut services by 40%, Capitol News Illinois reported. The transit agencies have approved 2026 budgets without fare hikes or service cuts.

Regional Office of Education to receive $337K education grant SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com The Illinois Community College Board announced $9.3 million in Innovative Bridge and Transition Grants to support initiatives that help Illinois residents transition more effectively into postsecondary education, job training, and high-demand careers. Regional Office of Education 47, which includes Lee, Ogle and Whiteside counties, has been awarded $337,500. Black Hawk College in Moline will receive $202,220.
These grants, awarded to community colleges and partner organizations across the state, expand access to bridge programming, adult education pathways, wrap-around supports, and transition services designed to meet the needs of today’s learners and employers. “The Innovative Bridge and Transition Grant Program continues to be one of our most powerful tools for opening doors to education and career opportunities across Illinois,” ICCB Executive Director Brian Durham said. “These grants allow our colleges to build strong,

seamless pathways that help learners gain the skills they need, connect with in-demand industries and ultimately achieve long-term economic mobility.” The IBT Grant Program supports projects that serve adults and youths who may face academic, linguistic or socioeconomic barriers to college and career entry. Through targeted instruction, advising, and hands-on training, the program ensures students can successfully move from foundational learning into certificate, degree, and workforce programs. “Our community colleges continue
to innovate and collaborate to ensure more Illinoisans can access and succeed in postsecondary education,” Durham said. “The IBT program helps us remove barriers so learners can take the next step toward a meaningful and fulfilling career.” The fiscal 2026 grants will support a range of initiatives, including adult education bridge courses, high school-tocollege transition programming, career pathway expansion, student support services, and partnerships that connect learning to real employment opportunities.

WALDBUSSER, 98, of Prophet- Adams Public Library and Prophetstown United stown, IL, died Monday, Methodist Church. She also served as an election judge for 34 years. In addition, Helen devoted herself to life as a farm wife and to caring for her family. That devotion extended throughout her life attending all of her grandsons’ sporting events, plays, and concerts. She was a lifelong member of the Prophetstown United Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading, crafting, working with flowers, gathering with friends and family to play cards, watching plays at the Showboat Theatre in Clinton, spending time with loved
ones, and enjoying Whitey’s Ice Cream. Survivors include one daughter, Debra (George) Vaught of Bloomington, IL; one son, Michael Waldbusser of Downers Grove, IL; two grandsons, Zachary Kelley of Anchorage, AK and Blake Kelley of Seattle, WA; two brothers, Marvin Albrecht of Sterling, IL and Wayne Albrecht of Dekalb, IL; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; one sister, Mildred (Maurice) Miatke; one brother, John (Pat) Albrecht, Jr.; two sisters-in-law, Beverly Albrecht and Betty Albrecht. He then continued to serve in the reserves until 1959. On January 2, 1952, he married Charlotte “Pete” Daniels in Moline IL. Arnold worked diligently for several local farms and businesses, including Morris Dever, Rock River, Prophetstown Thermogas, and Farmers National Bank. Survivors include his son, Ben (Jeanne) Frank, Prophetstown; grandsons, Jerrod (Michelle) Frank of Charlotte, Michigan; Dustin Segura, Denver, Colorado; and Keith (Jodi) Segura of Parker, Colorado; and his great-grandchildren, Archer and Harper, Garrett and Everette. Arnold was preceded in death by his wife, parents, daughter Bonnie Segura, brother, Everette Frank, sisters Gladys Sullivan and Leoris Conery. EICC earned distinction for its collaboration with 3M, ADM, and LyondellBasell through the launch of the state’s first Process Technician (P-Tech) Program and for the exemplary achievements of three individuals – Tom Arends, automotive department coordinator; Erin Snyder, chief communication officer; and Nicky Friedrichsen, director of board, Legislative and Foundation Relations. “These recognitions reflect the heart of who we are at EICC,” Chancellor Bryan Renfro said. “Our strength lies in our people and our partnerships. Whether it’s

The Outstanding Community College Awards are presented annually by Community Colleges for Iowa to recognize exemplary faculty, staff, alumni, and business and industry partners who advance the mission of community colleges across the state.
