Black Hawk College extends president’s contract through 2030

The Black Hawk College Board of Trustees has unanimously approved a contract extension for president Jeremy Thomas through June 30, 2030.
Thomas, who became the college’s president on June 1, 2023, has completed the original term of his contract, according to a news release.
The board’s action extends his leadership for an additional four years.
“Jeremy has challenged us to think bigger about what Black Hawk College can be,” said Fritz Larsen, board chair. “His focus on students, workforce development and community partnerships has strengthened the college in measurable ways.
“From expanding educational opportunities and strengthening relationships with employers to investing in state-ofthe-art facilities that prepare students for successful careers, his leadership is creating lasting value for our students, our communities and the regional economy.”
Since Thomas became president, Black Hawk College has experienced sustained enrollment growth, expanded partnerships with business, industry and educational institutions and invested in modern learning environments that prepare students for high-demand careers, according to the release.
The college has strengthened its workforce and transfer pathways while modernizing career and technical education facilities to better meet the evolving needs of students and employers.
Black Hawk College also has earned regional and national recognition through championship athletic programs and nationally competitive livestock, equine and agriculture judging teams, reflecting the college’s commitment to providing opportunities for students both inside and outside the classroom.
Thomas said the college’s accomplishments are the result of a shared commitment.
“I am grateful for the board’s confidence and the opportunity to continue serving Black Hawk College,” Thomas said.
“Everything we’ve accomplished has been possible because of our faculty, staff, trustees, students, alumni and community partners,” he said. “Together, we will continue creating opportunities for students, strengthening our communities and changing lives through education.”
Black Hawk College serves more than 225,000 residents across all or parts of Bureau, Henderson, Henry, Knox, Marshall, Mercer, Rock Island, Stark and Whiteside counties.
Operating as one college with campuses in Moline and near Kewanee, along with several outreach locations, Black Hawk College offers career and transfer education, workforce training and community programs that support the economic vitality of the region.

Erie celebrated 50 years of Heritage Park with a Little Mister and Miss competition and a tree dedication to a former mayor.
Cannon Russell and Mackenzie Bohms won the titles of 2026 Little Mister and Little Miss on July 2 during the 50th anniversary celebration of Heritage Park in Erie. The annual contest is open to any boy or girl ages 3-7 who resides in the Erie School District. ARLENE F. DYKSTRA, 88, of Morrison, IL, died Monday, June 29, 2026, at Resthave Home in Morrison.
A visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until the time of the service on Friday, July 10, 2026, at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Her funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM with Mr. Ken Renkes officiating. Interment will be at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison. A memorial has been established.
Arlene was born March 22, 1938, in Fulton, IL, to Frank and Tena (Pessman) Feldt. She was educated in the rural Whiteside County grade schools and graduated from Fulton High School. Arlene married John J. Dykstra on October 12, 1956, in Fulton, IL. Together, they farmed in the Morrison area throughout their married life while raising their family. They shared their lives for 50 years before his passing on October 17, 2006. Arlene dedicated
many years to Morrison High School, where she worked in the cafeteria and eventually served as Cafeteria Director before retiring. She was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Fulton. She loved tending to her garden, reading, and completing word search puzzles. Above all, Arlene cherished time spent with her family and friends. Her greatest happiness came from being with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandson, who brought her endless pride and joy.
Survivors include one daughter, Marcia (Larry) Heinitz of Morrison, IL; one son, Michael (Cindy) Dykstra of Channahon, IL; seven grandchildren, Jenny (Nathan) Anderson, Mathew (Lacey) Tegeler, Jacquelyn (Scott Gifford) Tegeler, Michael (Lora) Dykstra, Andrew (Agnes) Dykstra, Angie (Brian) Waugh, and David (Kelly) Dykstra; seventeen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; three sisters, Wilma Vander Eide of Fulton, IL, Ruth Dykema of Morrison, IL, and Karen (Allen) Tiesman of Fulton, IL; and one brother, Paul (Mary Tack) Feldt of Clinton, IA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; one son, Alan Dykstra; one sister, Dorothy Bielema.

Woodlawn Arts Academy announces fall programs

Registration opens this month for fall and school-year arts education programs at Woodlawn Arts Academy in Sterling.
The academy offers visual arts, dance, music, theater, culinary and education classes and workshops for children and adults of all ages, along with a private, arts-based preschool program for children ages 3-5.
The program kicks off in mid-August. Most other programs begin at the start of September.

4-H workshops
The 4-H Extension of Whiteside County will host two workshops this summer for youths.
July 8: From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., children ages 5-10 are invited to a “Nature’s Paint Box” learning workshop. Kids will make their own paints from items like berries, leaves, flowers and soil. Kids will reconnect with this timeless practice and discover the beauty of creating colors straight from the earth. Pen Pal Club
Prophetstown Library will host a Pen Pal Club in cooperation with a nationwide program for people of all ages to write to a pen pal.
The program is for ages 5 to 100. Once you get signed up, the administration will let us know a good match with a person of corresponding age and we will let you know what library they are from. There is no sharing of personal addresses. The person who writes the pen pal letter will drop off the letter at the library, and the library will mail the letter to the corresponding library where your pen pal is a patron at that library. Once they write back, the letter will get sent to Prophetstown Library, which will either email or phone you to let you know your letter is in. Stop by the library to sign up.
Summer reading in session
Summer Reading is every Tuesday in June at the Prophetstown Library. If you did not get signed up, that’s OK! This is open to all youths on Tuesdays, with the first session beginning at 9 a.m. for pre-K through second grades, 11 a.m. for third through fifth grades and 1 p.m. for sixth through eighth graders. Be sure to check out books and the library can keep track of your reading so you can earn a reading reward from local businesses.
School of Rock
Calling all future musicians: We want to see a future with music in it. The Prophetstown library is offering a new program to discover the joy of music! Our second installment will be on the piano. All kids and adults are invited to attend a piano jam session with local pianist and former Prophetstown student Diane Deter. Deter will be showing how the piano works and different styles of music you can make on the piano. The session will be 11 a.m.

Role-playing game club
A role-playing game club (Call of Cthulhu) will meet every Monday and Friday from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Prophetstown library. This is for anyone ages 10 to adult. All materials will be available unless you would like to bring your own dice, pencils, books etc.

Seed library for community
Prophetstown Library has received a generous donation from 4-H Extension of Whiteside County. There is a many vegetable and garden seeds available for free at our local library.
Prophetstown Proud to Read Program
This is an incentive reading program that will run from now through Aug. 1. It is designed to encourage kids to read through incentives donated by area businesses. Children who sign up for the Summer Reading Program and are committed to reading throughout the summer months will be presented with a tracking sheet, which the library or a parent can hold on to, meant to keep track of points earned from each book read.
All books can be checked out at Henry C. Adams Memorial Library and tracked by the library director. After reading the book, the child will have their parent sign the tracking paper, and as the child turns in the book, the librarian will add the points to the tracker.
When the child has completed the tracking card with their books read and signed by a parent or librarian, they will then receive a certificate to receive a reward. The reading program ends by Aug. 1, with all certificates to be spent by Oct. 1. Stop by the Prophetstown Library for details and to sign up for the Summer Reading Program.
Save the date for the Wild Medicine Workshop
Save the date of Aug. 15 and head to the Prophetstown Library for a Backyard Herbalism Workshop. The workshop is being hosted by local herbalist and owner of Nettle Wood Herbs, Amanda Norris. Amanda will teach about wild medicine herbs you can grow in your own backyard.

In the film, 12-year-old Ted lives in a place virtually devoid of nature. No flowers or trees grow in the town of Thneedville. Ted would like to win the heart of Audrey, the girl of his dreams, but to do this, he must find that which she most desires: a Truffula tree. To get it, Ted delves into the story of the Lorax, once the gruff guardian of the forest, and the Once-ler, who let greed overtake his
respect for nature. This movie is free and open to the public. Snacks and drinks are provided. Kids can bring blankets and pillows or other items to get comfortable.
Movie Matinee: The Odell Public Library Friends are showing a free movie matinee featuring “Hamilton” to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 12, in the Community Room. Hamilton fights for honor, love, ambition and a legacy that shapes the course of a new nation.
The Friends will provide Thicksten’s popcorn and bottled water, with patriotic birthday cake served during intermission. Please note that the film is rated PG-13, with a run time of 160 minutes. Guests are invited to bring cushions or their own chairs if preferred. Meeting room chairs are always available. This event is free and open to the public.

• The economic impact on the Clinton and Fulton area resulting directly from the operation of DuPont’s film plant at Clinton was $11,911,000 last year. The plant’s payroll was at an all-time high of $9,810,000. Purchase of goods and services for the plant totaled $2,101,000.

• Groundbreaking ceremonies were held at the Fulton Community Christian School for the new addition to the local school. • Thirty-four sailboats circled in the Mississippi River, just off the Albany Marina, waiting for the “go” shot on their race from Albany to Cordova. The race was organized as part of the Cordova Sesquicentennial festivities in Cordova on the Fourth of July weekend.
30 years
• July 3, 1996
• If engineers’ estimates stay true, 54 blocks of streets in the city will receive a new coat of blacktopping. These streets
are the last roads within the city that had been oiled and chipped for many years. If this is completed, all roads will either be cement or blacktopped in Fulton.
• The Advisory Council of the Fulton Assembly of God Church announces the resignation of Pastor Stephen Sedlock. Pastor Sedlock and his wife, Karen, began their ministry in Fulton in October 1989. Some of the ministries the Sedlocks were active in include River Bend Ministerial Association, LOVE, INC., the Salvation Army and Unity Christian School.

• July 5, 2006

• JBR Builders received approval from the Fulton council for Phase II of their Meadow Lane duplex development in north Fulton. The plat shows the relocated lot lines and streets by the owners of the property: Bob Dykema, Joe Haan and
Bill Brinkman. City of Fulton at the June 6 Council meeting agreed to numerous changes at the site. The project will provide for seven duplex units of approximately 1,150 square feet to be built on the development.
10 years
• July 6, 2016
• Fulton started the weekend off hosting five young men from five different countries. They were friends who built a boat out of trash and recycled material, hoping it would float long enough to travel the length of the Mississippi River. Two weeks into the trip they ported at Fulton Marina. They call their project “Recycled Mississippi” and they are making the trip while producing zero waste.
• Patty Ritzema, often referred to as “The Mother of Dutch Days” in Fulton is celebrating her 95th birthday on July 7. Patty, who now resides in an assisted living facility in Le Mars, Iowa, spent the majority of her life in Fulton after immigrating from the Netherlands with her husband Bert and four of their six children in 1954.

The Sauk Valley Theatre Alliance will wrap up Woodlawn Arts Academy’s 20th anniversary celebration with the return of a fan-favorite musical in its 15th year of Theatre in the Park.
Free performances of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” are planned for July 9 to 11, with showtimes at 7 p.m. on the outdoor stage on the back lawn of Woodlawn Arts Academy in Sterling.
In this riotous ride, complete with audience participation, an eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime.
While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake.
Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box.

Lost Mound Unit managed deer hunt applications open

Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge has announced the availability of 2026 applications for the special deer hunts held at Lost Mound.
Two managed deer hunts, one for youths (10-17)/family and one for adults with disabilities (18 and older), are conducted within designated closed areas of Lost Mound.
All hunters must be accompanied by an able-bodied adult who is capable of tracking and retrieving a deer.
The application period is open through July 31.
All applications will be entered into a random drawing for 35 hunt sites on Aug. 5. All hunters, attendants and any accompanying individuals must attend the mandatory hunt site check-in and scout day that corresponds with their hunt.
Youth hunt check-in will be from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, and noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 20.
The adults with disabilities hunt
check-in will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13. The location will be the Lost Mound Unit equipment storage building, 3159 Crim Drive, Savanna.
The youth/family hunt will be Nov. 21 and 22, which coincides with the Illinois Firearms Deer First Season. An unfilled Illinois Youth Deer Permit or Jo Daviess County Deer Permit must be obtained and brought to the orientation. All youths must show certification of completion of a state-approved hunter safety course.
The hunt for adults with disabilities will be held on Nov. 14 and 15, which is the Saturday and Sunday before the Illinois Firearms Deer First Season.
A minimum P2a Illinois disability classification (or similar disability certification from non-resident states) is required.
Wheelchair users and amputee hunters will receive priority selection for hunt sites. A Jo Daviess County Deer Permit is not needed to apply for this hunt.

Whiteside County 4-H show to run July 9-11 at fairgrounds
The Whiteside County 4-H Show runs Thursday, July 9, through Saturday, July 11, at the Whiteside County Fairgrounds.
The fairgrounds are located at 201 W. Winfield St. in Morrison.
The public is invited to view the projects that local youths have worked on throughout the year.
The show kicks off with the horse and pony show at 8:30 a.m. July 9.
On July 10, the poultry show starts at 9:30 a.m., followed by the cat show at noon, and the rabbit show at 2 p.m. That evening, the 4-H Federation pork chop barbecue is from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., and there will be a Junior Solar Sprint race at 5:30 behind the grandstand.
The general project show is all day Saturday, July 11. Pork chop dinners can be

Quilt historian to speak at River City Quilters Guild meeting July 21
Janette Dwyer will be the guest speaker at the River City Quilters Guild’s July 21 meeting.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at Fulton Presbyterian Church, 311 Ninth St., Fulton.
Dwyer is a well-known quilt appraiser and quilt historian. She’s from Atkinson and has been a quilt enthusiast since 1984. She has owned her own quilt shop, The Farmer’s Daughters.
In 2007, she became a quilt appraiser and has served on the Board of Directors for the Ruby Short McKim Collaborative. Ruby Short McKim was posthumously inducted into the Quilter’s Hall of Fame in 2002.
Her presentation, “Grand Ladies of Quilting and One Gent,” focuses on four cottage
industry entrepreneurs who were instrumental in shaping the quilting trade in the early 1920s and 1930s.
She will be bringing vintage and antique quilts for display.
Morrison’s Macy Williamson graduates from Coe College
Macy Williamson of Morrison has been awarded a Bachelor of Arts at Coe College, majoring in psychology and creative writing.
The graduating Kohawks demonstrated excellence in academics, athletics and the arts; were leaders in research and community service; and completed thousands of internship hours with local, national and international organizations.
At Commencement, Coe College President David Hayes encouraged members of the class to fulfill their potential.
“Be the person who brings people
together. Be the neighbor who shows up. Be the colleague who builds trust. Be the citizen who strengthens the communities you enter. The world does not need more spectators. It needs more participants. And it needs more builders,” Hayes said. Williamson was among more than 225 students who received degrees.
