Do you know what it is like to have a job at nine years old? During his childhood, Mark Steven Hamilton spent full days working with his dad. In his adult life, he worked for and spent time with his family. During retirement, Mark spends his time playing Call of Duty, watching sports and playing golf. Mark Steven Hamilton is loving because of his hardworking childhood, his devotion to his family and his relaxing and enjoyable retirement. Mark Steven Hamilton was born on March 7, 1953, in Clinton, Iowa. He is my maternal grandfather. Mark’s parents are John and Catherine Hamilton. They also had another child named David. Growing up, Mark lived and went to school in Fulton. He lived in a house his dad had built. Mark lived a work-filled childhood. He was 9 years old when he got his first job helping in his father’s construction business. The school he attended didn’t have sports until he was in the fourth grade. Growing up, he had three dogs. Their names were Feefee, Tweety and Buddy. Both his mom and his dad went to school in Erie, which is how they knew each other. Mark was in Cub Scouts, as well as Boy Scouts, when he wasn’t at school or working. One time as a child, Mark needed a new bike, so he got a job selling Christmas cards to pay for the bike. While he was in middle school, Mark won a soap box derby, which he said was his favorite childhood memory. At the age of 21, Mark married Sandra Wiersema, whom he is still married to today. Mark had many jobs in his adult life: a paper route, selling Christmas cards, working at Eagle Foods in Clinton, coaching football and working in construction. He never served in the military but was in the next group to be sent to the Vietnam War. The reason he wasn’t drafted is because they put him on a waiting list because he was in college at the time. Mark had three children: Amy Hartig,

Jill Hamstra and Joni VanDeWostine. In his free time, he plays golf and video games and works around the house. Mark’s favorite video game is Call of Duty. He plays this game almost every day when he has spare time. He started playing video games in his early 20s. He only had the game Pong, so that is what he played all of the time. Another way Mark spends his free time is golfing. He started playing golf when he was in eighth grade and still does to this day. After his first daughter Amy was born, Mark started to build model planes. His goal is to get one of the model planes running again at some point during retirement. While Mark was in college, he played baseball and basketball for the school. After college, he went to work in his father’s construction business. One time, he came home from work with a broken nose from cutting wood. On his weekends off, Mark played fastpitch softball and basketball in a recreational league in Thomson. When Mark’s youngest daughter was between the ages of two and three, his family bought their first camper and they camped all of the time together. They camped so much that if you talked to his daughters they would say they basically lived at the campground. As a family, they went on many vacations together. On one occasion, they drove a motorhome out west and toured places and visited family. On another occasion, they went to Chetek, Wisconsin, with a big group of friends and family. Mark faced some challenges during his life. For example, when the construction economy went down, they didn’t build very many houses, which made them lose money. Another hardship is when his dad died. He was out of a job because his dad owned the construction company he worked for. My grandfather has many friends. Some of his lifelong friends that he still talks to are Steve Voss, Ron Baker, Duncan Reed and his sports teammates. In 1976, Mark built the house that they live in today. Since then they have added

onto their house by building another living room. Mark was once a leader at the church they went to as a family. He was very well thought of at the church, so they put him in charge of putting a new roof on the building. During his later life, he built a lot of houses in Erie, Springhill and Fenton. Some fun facts about my grandfather that even I didn’t know was he won an arm wrestling tournament, he won a golf tournament, he played guitar in a garage band and he owned a sports car. One time, Mark and his wife traveled all the way to Mexico to attend a family member’s wedding. This shows the pure dedication that Mark has to his family. While we are on the topic of family, his first grandchild was born in 2008. Mark retired from construction in 2018. During his retirement, he became a Whiteside County Board member and today has been a board member for 16 years. Some advice Mark would give to younger generations is work with your hands and learn the trades. In conclusion, Mark Steven Hamilton is a compassionate and kind-hearted grandfather because of his hard work helping his dad during his childhood and his determination to provide for his family. Today, he enjoys spending time with his family. His childhood was very adventurous, but he also had the responsibility of work. He enjoyed the time he had away from work by camping with his family. Mark soaks up every bit of time he has with his family and I enjoy the time when I see him. He is a phenomenal person and I want to spend more time with him.

What is The Ancestor Project?

As one of the final projects of the year, seventh graders at Erie Middle School were challenged to pick an ancestor or someone else they could research and learn more about in order to write a story telling about their life. While there were many great stories written, not all will be published. The project was a collaborative effort between students’ history classes with Mrs. Kruthoff and Mr. Armstrong, English class with Ms. Shabani and their families.

Ready, set, hop! Toad, frog races continue festival’s tradition Hooppole Fun Day held in town of 180 people south of Prophetstown By EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@shawmedia.com HOOPPOLE – Silas Newman almost didn’t have a toad in the race at the annual Hooppole Fun Day on June 28, but with a bit of luck and a large slice of heritage in the 12-year-old’s corner, “Bill” showed up just in time. “We couldn’t find a toad,” said Silas’ dad Isaac. “Then I was out spraying for bugs this morning and suddenly there he was.” “He” was a large American toad that the Newmans scooped up and transported to downtown Hooppole, population 180, for the coveted “Toad Race” – an event that has roots back to the first Hooppole Fun Day almost 50 years ago. Dubbed “Bill” by Silas, the toad was one of three competing in the Big Toad

“Silas’ grandpa ran it 50 years ago,” Isaac said. “So I guess he is kind of a ringer.” Isaac recalled one critter race in which a turtle grabbed a frog and ran across the finish line first. “The kid who entered the frog won because the frog crossed the finish line first even though it was in the turtle’s mouth,” Isaac said. “My dad said the kid with the turtle was upset.” Now only frogs and toads compete. Silas and two other kids, Georgia Walls and Jackson Perry, lined their toads up at the start line in the Big Toad race and with a signal from Isaac, the race, or rather the hop, was on. Different modes of encouragement were employed to get the amphibians to hop their way to victory. OBITUARIES DR. VALARIE RODGERS Died: June 14, 2025 in Morrison, IL Dr. Valarie Rodgers, age 74, died Saturday, June 14th at her farm home outside Morrison, Illinois. Born in Baltimore, she was the youngest of three daughters born to James and Rose Rodgers. She is survived by one sister, Virginia, and by her son and husband, James and Robert Alt, and by her beloved menagerie of horses and cats. Funeral services take place at 2 pm on Thursday, June 26, at Lemke Funeral Homes – South Chapel. A visitation occurs 2 hours prior from 12 pm until

the service hour at the Funeral Home. Lemke Funeral Homes is honored to serve the family of Valarie Rodgers during this difficult time. Growing up in the 60s in Arlington Heights, Illinois she exemplified some of the stereotypes of her generation, a combination of reverence for her parent’s “greatest generation” and the rebelliousness of a “boomer”. She led a high school walkout to protest faculty interference in student voting, danced at The Cellar to the beat of her generation, modeled and entered beauty contests, and yet won the school’s science award while actively pursuing her passion for sculpting, painting, and pottery. Throughout her youth and throughout her life, she also, and perhaps mostly, worked with and loved horses. Valarie attended the U of Iowa as an art major, working multiple jobs for school and

to board her mare nearby. Deciding that she better make more money than the average hippie, she aced the required science classes to be accepted as one of the seven women in the ninety-six members of the dental school class of 1978. Married to her classmate Robert in 1977, they both served as officers in the US Navy Dental Corps until 1981. She then taught senior dental students at the U of Illinois Dental School, wrote a text on Removable Prosthodontics, and supported her husband during his oral surgery residency. Valarie moved to Morrison in 1984, taught at the U of Iowa Dental College, and practiced dentistry in Clinton. Later, she and Robert opened and operated the Clinton Dental Surgery Center. During these years, her equine interests peaked and she competed nationally

in the Olympic sport of Eventing, having great success and being “long listed” for the US Team and awarded as the Intermediate Level Eventing Champion of Illinois. Giving birth to James in 1991 changed her focus, but she still continued an active equestrian life. To give back to the sport, she built and hosted the Hidden Hollow Horse Trials at her farm outside Fulton, founded the Atalanta Foundation to support local civic and charitable activity, still practiced a little dentistry, and got into farm life and the ag industry. She thought up, planned and started far more projects than life allowed her to complete. Valarie will be missed, and remembered. Gross sales of the Patent Novelty Company passed the million dollar mark for the first time in the company’s history during 1964. The future of flood control projects for Fulton and other communities along the Mississippi River will be determined by the effort expended by local interests to obtain flood protection. This was the major impression gained by Fulton Waterworks Superintendent James Shipma from a flood conference called by the Mississippi Valley Association at Burlington.

The newest police officer for Fulton is Raymond Swaim, who began his duties May 1. He comes to Fulton from Huntsville, Alabama, where he was a member of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department for a year and a half. So far, he reports that he loves it here in Fulton. Mayor Wiersema used his voting power to cast the deciding vote to award a contract to the Kinney Excavating Company for the Fourth Street project. The firm submitted a bid of $155,844.56 for improvements along four blocks in the downtown area on Fourth Street from Ninth to 13th avenues. Improvements will include new sidewalks, lighting, storm sewers,

The River City Mall complex is getting ready for a grand opening celebration. All eight businesses will be participating in the event that will begin with a ribbon-cutting. Highlights of the event will be balloon rides, two fashion shows and bargains from all the retailers. The businesses are Wilson Greenhouses, Witt’s End Styling Salon, Howard Neese II Insurance, William Haiduck and Associates, Skywatch Satellite Systems, Bielema Shoes, CJ’s Upper Deck and B & D Dutch Pantry. Liquor may be sold on Sunday in three Fulton restaurants starting July 14 as a result of a 4-2 vote by the City Council. The vote came after an extended discussion with proponents and opponents of Sunday sales presenting forceful arguments for their positions.

Fulton police were notified that the Gateway Bridge on Route 30 has been closed because of a structural problem. Ultrasound tests by the Illinois Department of Transportation found a potentially weak connecting pin in the Mississippi River span. Ultrasound testing is done every two years to detect any problems.

Young authors of 1995 include Angela Carlson and Lynn Harrison. Each received honorable mention in the Young Authors program.

After traveling almost 10,000 miles from Fulton, the Malawi Mission students have arrived safely in Africa and began working on their mission activities. Team members from Fulton are Amanda Vandervinne, Ali Cole, Nicole Tomman and Dan Jasper. Members of the Shive Hattery Inc. consultant group met with a group of about 20 in the City Council chambers. Landscape architect Sandy Dolan, architect Bruce Handing and David Tallman presented the phased plans of development. The plan includes the area around the windmill site on First Street. First phase of the project would be to close First Street from 10th to 11th avenues to allow for the exposing of the brick pavers now covered by asphalt.

Phase 2 will add retail shops to the area, continuing the same styles as the tax house. Final phase of the project is the most ambitious and may be the most difficult to fund. A community center would be created from the Drives office building.

The project was expected to finish in January 2026, but Morrison Community Hospital CEO Pam Pfister said this week that utility work delays have pushed the completion date to May 2026. Despite those delays, she said work is moving ahead. “They are busy working on the retaining wall and that means they have got quite a bit of the pier work done,” Pfister said. “The elevator shaft is now concluded and they’re finalizing the southwest stairwell. Once they get that retaining wall done, they’ll begin to infill, and we are scheduled for steel delivery on July 14.”

Pfister said. “And then the first story, which will fall in line with our current rural health clinic, that space is being completed as we speak.” The second-floor addition will connect to the hospital’s medical-surgical unit and remain “an open canvas” for future expansions. “We’re having internal discussions on what the best use for that space would be,” Pfister said. “It’s highly probable that it could be used for outpatient services.” Pfister said the construction has not disrupted the hospital’s operations. “We’ve been very fortunate that because it’s all new construction, it doesn’t hinder any of the current operations,” Pfister said. “We kind of navigated a little bit of parking early on in Alex T. SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal are reminding organizations and individuals sponsoring fireworks displays to keep safety at the top of mind and be sure their vendors have the required state licenses and certificates before their fireworks shows. The Illinois Explosives Act requires that anyone who purchases, possesses, uses, transfers, stores or disposes of explosives, including display fireworks, must have an explosives license and explosives storage certificate issued by the IDNR. Licensing and storage requirements administered by the IDNR do not apply to consumer fireworks (classified as 1.4 explosives). Approved consumer fireworks are regulated by the OSFM and are permitted only in villages, counties and municipalities that have passed ordinances allowing such displays. Consumer fireworks may be purchased and displayed only by adults who have obtained permits from their local jurisdiction. Handheld fireworks, including firecrackers, roman candles and bottle rockets, are not approved for sale or use in Illinois. The Illinois Explosives Act is administered by the IDNR Office of Mines and Minerals, Explosives and

The division is staffed by trained and experienced blasting specialists located throughout Illinois. In addition to requiring comprehensive licensing, training and examination for individuals, the law requires that unattended display fireworks and explosives must be stored in an explosives magazine, storage facility or container that is inspected and certified by the IDNR. IDNR has 2,135 individuals licensed for the use of explosives in Illinois, of which 694 are specifically for the use of display fireworks. There are 723 certified explosives storage magazines in Illinois, which contain nearly 40 million pounds of

explosives. Of those storage magazines, 94 are certified specifically for the storage of display fireworks. Anyone possessing, using, transferring or purchasing display fireworks without a valid IDNR individual explosives license or storage certificate is violating Illinois law and could incur penalties. A violation of the Illinois Explosives Act can be a Class 3 felony with a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. In addition, IDNR can assess administrative fines for violations involving display fireworks and other explosives.

Fireworks can cause injuries and property damage

According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks started an estimated 31,302 fires in 2022, including 3,504 structure fires, 887 vehicle fires and 26,492 outside fires. These fires caused six deaths and 44 injuries and an estimated $109 million in direct property damage. These fires are not only caused by commercial/consumer fireworks but also by unregulated novelty fireworks that are sometimes bought at local supermarkets. In addition to fireworks, novelties such as sparklers, snappers and poppers are dangerous. Sparklers account for the greatest number of fireworks injuries and often to the youngest victims.

About 50% of those injured suffered multiple injuries. The reported injuries were related to a variety of fireworks with “mortars” (36%) listed as the most frequent

type of fireworks or pyrotechnic effect involved in injury. This was followed by roman candles (12%), bottle rockets (8%) and sparklers (8%). The type of injuries reported were associated with other effects, including salutes (7%), smoke bombs (6%) and firecrackers (6%). The sale and use of roman candles, firecrackers and salute devices are prohibited in Illinois. More than half of all injuries affected hands (29%), head/ face (14%) and legs (13%). Second-degree burns were the leading type of injury at 23%, followed by first-degree burns (18%). Lacerations accounted for 17% of the injuries and abrasions at 15%. Loss of sight increased to

The first major project in 2022 added an emergency room, more beds, operating rooms and upgrades to radiology, lab and clinic areas, all of which enabled the hospital to accommodate more patients. An expansion in 2023 added a third operating room, further increasing capacity. “Space is premium right now and we’ve pretty much exhausted all space available to us on the premises,” Pfister said. “When the project’s done, the primary care and the walk-in clinic will move out to that new, expanded area and the specialty services will stay in the current footprint, which happens to be about 12,000 square feet.” The hospital’s addition also is expected to bring about 10 full-time positions, including the addition of Dr. Trever Troutman, a Morrison native. “We have already filled two of those positions,” Pfister said. “Those are nursing positions working with our primary care team. [Troutman] will be joining our team on Sept. 2. Dr. Woods’ retirement date has been identified as

Silas planned on releasing Bill back to his natural habitat after the racing day concluded. Toad and frog races were just one of the events held during the Hooppole Fun Day, a family-centric day that started in 1976. Saturday’s events included races and tractor pulls for kids, a cake walk, a Little Miss and Mister Contest, parade, a Rolle Bolle and Bags Tournament, fireworks and mud volleyball. Organizers offered this insight into the Fun Day’s history. “A day that was set aside to celebrate

While the distant travelers were there, they participated in a day filled with cake walks, paper plate toss, horseshoes and several things we partake in today. If a small town like Revillo could have such a great turnout, we figured we should try it in Hooppole. Which is exactly what they did.” Hooppole Fun Day is held on the Saturday before July 4.
