By CODY CUTTER ccutter@shawmedia.com LANARK – Small-town traditions often survive because each generation decides some things are worth repeating – a parade route, a beer tent, a child clutching a balloon animal, or the sound of live music drifting across a park. Some are events that fill the streets with smiles and some are fleeting moments between a few friends, others are a chance for families to share special times – but stitched together they become the shared memories that can bring communities closer together, the rituals they look forward to revisiting. In Lanark, they are Old Settlers Days, a tradition almost as old as the town itself. Returning June 26-28, the annual festival features food, vendors, a parade, live music, kids activities, races, a beer garden – and this year, celebrations honoring America’s 250th birthday, a fitting addition to the itinerary given the event’s origins, born of a show of patriotism and pride. The event’s first celebration reaches back to 1874 – about a decade after the town’s founding – held to honor local veterans of the Civil War. Except for a 20-year period in the 1960s and 1970s, the event has been an annual tradition in Lanark that has gone through several changes, while still keeping the goal of creating an event that’s fun for all. Coordinating the historic festival is the responsibility of a nine-person committee, led by co-presidents Alisha Metz and Marissa Giedd. Metz grew up in Lanark, and the event’s been part of her life for nearly 45 years, having attended her first one as a young child. She remembers a time when it was “cool” for kids to have an Old Settlers Day button on their shirt (which was also at one time a ticket for admission). Her children enjoyed it years ago, and she’s seeing her grandchildren like it just as much, she said. Button sales are a thing of the past now, and most events are free. “Old Settlers Days is about community, families and fun,” Metz said. “It’s about getting everyone together in Lanark just to enjoy each other’s company, and hopefully other people from other counties will come in and enjoy it. I remember all of the fun we used to have, and now we’re trying to bring some of those things back this year, especially with it being the big 250th.” One of Metz and Giedd’s goals this year is to make the event fun for all age groups, having identified some areas

Old Settlers Days in Lanark will return from June 26 to 28, with most activities taking place at the town’s park. where activities weren’t as appealing for younger ages. They’ve added new activities to the schedule to fill those gaps, including a treasure hunt where children can dig through large sand piles to find toys. “One of the things that people have told us is about how we didn’t have things for all ages,” Giedd said. “This will be the first year where we’ll absolutely have things for every single age. There’s something for everyone to participate.” Like Metz, Giedd has fond memories of the event, and she hopes to be able to help her own two children create the same. She’s lived in Lanark since she was a child, and at 34 is the youngest person on the festival’s committee. It’s special, she said, “Being able to reminisce with people on what it was, how it’s changed.” The weekend begins at 3 p.m. June 26 with food and craft vendors, and a large bounce house for kids at the park. The beer garden under the Eastland Motorsports Main Tent also opens at 3 p.m. that day and runs until midnight. Exotic animal shows from Scales and Tales of Chicago will be at both 5 and 7 p.m. Paint in the Park is from 5 to 7 p.m. when participants create paintings on canvas board to later be posted throughout the park (canvas cost is $5). A quarter-mile fun run for kids is at 5:45, with registration beginning 15 minutes earlier. Laser tag for the older

kids is from 7 to 10 p.m., and 3 On the Tree will play from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Tent. An after party will be at Lanark’s bars from midnight to 2 a.m. Saturday morning’s events kick off at 8 a.m. with the Stronger Together Raging Road Rally 5K run. Proceeds from registration support local residents Carlee Tessendorf and Callie Plager, who are battling breast cancer; registration is at 7 a.m. at On the Move Community Fitness Center, 125 W. Locust St. Prizes will be awarded to attendees who wear pink during the run. A car show will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the streets surrounding the park, with 3-D Sound of Dixon providing music; about 60 cars were showcased last year. Food and craft vendors open for the day at 9 a.m. The “Happy 250th Birthday America” parade begins at 11 a.m. and runs along Broad Street south of downtown; the beer garden also opens at the same time. The treasure hunt begins at 11:30 a.m. at 213 W. Carroll, a block south of the park. Face painting by Ms. Rosie will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Several events begin at noon Saturday, including a petting zoo, axe throwing, kids games, Bingo, a kiddie tractor pull, balloon animals from Pickles the Clown, and the bounce house. Kiddie water fights begin at 1 p.m., a Happy Hour with music by Charlie Rae is from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Tent, and more music

continues there from 7 to 11 p.m. with The Beaux. The night concludes with another after party at the town bars. Sunday’s events begin with a church service at the Tent from 10 to 11 a.m. by the Eastland Council of Churches, followed by pork chops and dessert from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The festival concludes with an antique tractor pull at Eastland Motor Sports, 110 state Route 64, at noon. Some events held in recent years, such as a pony show and Chicken Drop Bingo – where prizes are determined by a number where a chicken deposits its droppings – are not returning to the itinerary this year. The vendor shows will have plenty of young entrepreneurs, up to high school ages, in addition to established ones in the community. For some of the kids, it’s an opportunity to learn how to sell, market, practice customer service and explore their interests, Giedd said. The festival committee puts on fundraisers to keep it going; some recent ones include Donuts with Friends in January, a donut decorating event for kids who shared in the fun with costumed cartoon characters such as Bluey, Skye, Spider-Man and Olaf; and Egg My Yard in April, where it sold plastic Easter eggs with treats and scattered them throughout the yards of those who bought them for their kids to have an egg hunt. Other annual events put on by the committee include a Kids Market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 1, the Fall Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 11, the Lighted Christmas Parade at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 28 and Santa’s Workshop from 9 to 11 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 5. For Metz, Giedd and others involved, Old Settlers Days represents something larger than just a schedule of attractions or annual fundraising efforts – it is a way to preserve traditions that once shaped their own childhoods and pass those same experiences on to a new generation. In a town where many families have attended the festival for decades, they hope that today’s children will one day look back on these weekends with the same fondness their parents and grandparents do now. “I want to keep traditions going in Lanark,” Metz said. “They’re fun family traditions that I remember as a kid, and now I’m a grandma, so I want my kids to come.” Old Settlers Days is June 26 to 28 in Lanark, with most activities at the town’s park, 200 W. She especially treasured time spent with her family, creating memories with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He also looked forward to spending winters at his home in Sun City, Arizona, where he enjoyed the sunshine, friendships, Cubs spring training games, and warm weather. Above all else, Curt was a devoted family man. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy; his children, Kellie (Dean) Larrabee, Kendall (Pam) Plautz, and Penny Plautz; five grandchildren—Lauren (John), Kathryn (Yousef), Madeline (Konrad), Jake, and Nicole; and five great-grandchildren—Jaxson, Eli, Kai, Kobe, and Theodore. He also leaves behind many cousins, friends, and neighbors who will miss his steady presence and kind spirit. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marlene. Curt will be remembered for his card-play-

ing abilities, his wit and wisdom, his commitment to family, his love of community, and his strong faith. He lived fully and he lived well, and his legacy will continue through the generations that follow and the many lives he touched along the way. His family finds comfort in the countless memories they shared and in knowing that the man he was, and the values he lived by, will endure. Visitation will be held Monday, June 22, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., at the 1st Lutheran Church in Prophetstown with Masonic Rites at 4:30 PM. The funeral will follow on Tuesday at 10:30 AM at the church, with the Reverend Susan Davenport officiating. Burial will be private. Arrangements entrusted to the McDonald Funeral Home & Crematory in Prophetstown. In lieu of flowers,memorials may be given to the 1st Lutheran Church or Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

NCBA working to address concerns affecting US cattlemen By MARTHA BLUM mblum@shawmedia.com Illinois cattlemen have many concerns to tackle this year, including the development of a new farm bill. “One of the things we are pushing for is the completion of the farm bill,” National Cattlemen’s Beef Association CEO Colin Woodall said. “A year ago we had the One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed and signed by the president and most of the provisions that NCBA is interested in were included in that bill.” However, some things still need to be addressed, he said, such as credit and research provisions. “More than anything else, we need certainty about what the plan is and what the programs look like,” he said. “We need to make sure the rest of agriculture is healthy, too, because the U.S. cattle industry needs a healthy corn industry. “Chairman of the Senate Ag Committee, Sen. John Boozman is going to mark up legislation by the end of the month. We will be there to support him and try to keep bad ideas at bay.” NCBA is working to encourage the U.S. Senate to complete the process. Woodall does not expect a lot of other legislation to be passed by the U.S. Congress in the upcoming months. “We are in the middle of a very contentious midterm election and the members of the House and Senate want to be home,” he said. “They don’t want to take a vote on something that could be thrown into their face on the campaign trail. This is a whole new world when it comes to politics because now a tweet or a five-second sound bite can derail a campaign. It is a lifetime between now and November where anything can happen.” The administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is Lee Zeldin, a former member of the House of Representatives from New York. “He is a supporter of business and agriculture,” Woodall said. “The proposal we have now, that he is taking comments on, is proactive and we are excited about that. Colin Woodall is the CEO of the National Cattlemen Beef Association. send product to China are reauthorized, so now we have access into China.” Another win for U.S. cattlemen was the change in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans which includes the Food Guide Pyramid. “The guidelines do not impact what we do day-to-day as individual Americans,” Woodall said. “But it does impact all the purchasing decisions of federal feeding programs such as school lunches, the federal prison system and military installations.” He said that is a great example of checkoff dollars paying huge dividends. “Because we have 40 years of nutrition research funded by your checkoff dollars, we were able to put that research in front of Health Secretary Robert Kennedy,” Woodall said. “That helped justify where he

already was and the Food Guide Pyramid was turned on its head and now beef is at the top. That was a huge win for the industry and something that will continue to drive demand.” “Demand for beef right now is amazing and there are a lot of questions if beef is too expensive. I think all of us can make the argument that we are finally getting paid for the value of what we are producing,” Woodall said. “By using new and improved production practices, investing in genetic improvement and utilizing animal health products, that has allowed us to produce the highest quality product that we ever have. “The eating experience that was once reserved for white tablecloth restaurants, you can now find at Costco and the consumers love it.” The price of beef is driven by demand since consumers do not have to buy beef. NCBA provides

services and support that IBA members can use to be successful. “We are providing the consumer a much better eating experience than we once did,” Woodall said. “They are selecting beef, paying the money and enjoying every bit of it. We are here to help you, but it takes grassroots engagement and involvement to provide leadership. “Our organization has been around since 1898 – that’s 128 years. To be able to tackle all the issues this industry is faced with and still be an association of influence and power is a testament to the membership and that’s why we need you at the table. There is a place for you. “We are in the fun business because Americans celebrate and have fun with beef. I am extremely proud of what we do. As long as we focus on that high quality and fun eating experience, we are going to have plenty of opportunity.”

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Tuesday, June 16, that weather permitting, construction on the U.S. 30 Mississippi River bridge in Whiteside County would begin Thursday, June 18. The bridge is located near Fulton. Work will apply concrete sealer to the bridge deck. There will be daytime lane closures controlled by flaggers during the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of July. Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area and be prepared for slow and stopped traffic. To avoid the

work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment. Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year 6 of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.

A Whiteside County man has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to theft and weapon charges in Whiteside County and to burglary, unlawful restraint and battery charges in Bureau County. Ijah Hopson, 20, of Fulton, pleaded guilty June 5 in Whiteside County Circuit Court to charges in two separate cases. Under a plea deal, Hopson pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a stolen firearm – a .380-caliber pistol – in connection with a May 14, 2024, incident. As part of the deal, two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm were dismissed. He also pleaded guilty in a separate Whiteside County case, accusing him of stealing items worth more than $500 but less than $10,000 from April 21, 2024, to May 21, 2024. Items taken from five victims included a pink expandable baton, a handgun, a driver’s license and debit

card, two wallets, a checkbook, a purse and $50, according to court records. He was sentenced to four years in prison in each case, with the sentences to be served concurrently. They Ijah Hopson also will be served concurrently with three other sentences handed down on June 1 in Bureau County Circuit Court, according to court records. In that county, Hopson was charged with burglary for the March 21 break-in at Harry’s Pub & Grub in Ohio, Illinois. Five days later, he was charged with domestic battery and unlawful restraint for pushing a woman and holding her down. He also incurred multiple charges, some dismissed as part of a plea, for a series of March auto break-ins and attempts to use the credit cards. Bureau County prosecutors agreed to five-year concurrent sentences, less about two months’ credit for time served.
