Millie Moo Foundation receives $20K from Sterling Federal Bank Charity Challenge

The Millie Moo Foundation in Hillsdale has been selected as the first-place recipient of the ninth annual Sterling Federal Bank Charity Challenge, earning the top award of $20,000 to further its mission of supporting pediatric cancer families and funding agricultural scholarships for youths.
The annual Charity Challenge, hosted by Sterling Federal Bank, is a community-driven initiative that empowers bank employees and the public to support local nonprofit organizations. Each year, a group of charities is nominated by employees of Sterling Federal Bank. Throughout the monthlong campaign, community members cast daily votes on Facebook. At the conclusion of the voting period, the organizations with the highest number of votes receive financial contributions from the bank.
The 2026 Charity Challenge winners are:
• first place: The Millie Moo Foundation – $20,000
• second place: Village of Progress –$10,000
• third place: Victory Center – $5,000
“We are incredibly honored and humbled to receive this support,” said Wesley DeClercq, Millie’s father and founding member of The Millie Moo Foundation. “This recognition is not just a win for our organization – it is a win for every pediatric cancer family we serve. The outpouring of votes reflects the power of community and the belief that no family should face this journey alone.”
Founded in October 2025, The Millie Moo Foundation was created to provide direct financial assistance to pediatric cancer families, including support for mortgage or rent payments, utilities, groceries and travel during treatment.

At the age of 88, Joyce Lorraine Tiesman went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Friday, April 24, 2026, surrounded by her family.
She was born on September 15, 1937, to Henry and Tena (Vos) Tenboer of Morrison, IL. Joyce was educated at Prairie Center Grade School and then graduated in 1955 from Morrison High School. She married Arnold Tiesman on November 2, 1956. They made their home in Fulton, IL. She worked for Dr. Curt Gronner in Morrison after graduation, then worked as a secretary

Darrel A. Morse, 89 of Prophetstown, died Tuesday April 28, 2026 at his home.
He was born on November 17, 1936 in Portland Twp, the son of Clifford C. and Nora (Wilkins) Morse. He was a graduate of Prophetstown High School and served in the US Army. Darrel married Loralie Jacobs on August 2, 1959. He had worked for many years

Marcia Marie (Miller) Smith, 75, of Erie, IL, died peacefully Saturday, April 25, 2026, at her home surrounded by her family. Memorial Services were held at 11:00 am Friday, May 1, 2026 at the Erie United Methodist Church. Visitation was from 4-7 pm on Thursday at Gibson – Bode Funeral Home, Erie. Burial was in the Erie Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Erie United Methodist Church.
Marcia was born on December 8, 1950, in Morrison, IL to Robert “Glenn” and Mary (Beemer) Miller. She graduated from Erie High School in 1969 and went on to attend the University of Iowa, graduating in 1973. As
at Fidelity Life Insurance Company in Fulton, IL. She also worked part time at the local Dime Store in Fulton, as well as a secretary at Clinton Community College in Clinton, IA, for many years.
Her hobbies were crocheting and knitting. She crocheted 21 afghans and gave them all to her children and grandchildren, as well as some for wedding gifts. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She loved attending their sports events, orchestra concerts, and band concerts. Joyce loved music and gave piano lessons for 14 years. She was a pianist for choirs at Fulton Christian School for several years and was an organist at First Christian Reformed Church in Fulton, IL, for 56 years. Joyce volunteered at Bargain Bonanza in Clinton, IA. After retirement, Arnold and Joyce moved to Hudsonville, MI, in 2013 to be closer to family. She enjoyed attending and volunteering at
at General Electric in Morrison before retiring. Darrel enjoyed the outdoors and took great pride in maintaining his home and yard.
Survivors include his wife, Loralie; daughter, Beth Morse; son, Mitchell (Julie) Morse; sisters: Idonna (Marco) Kustudia and Norrine Linderman; six grandchildren: Ryan Gillis, Hon. Ashley Morse; Anna Imel, Shane Rivers, Addison Nuding and Charlie Lynn Morse; six great grandchildren: Breslyn, Morse, Huxley, Harlon, Korby and Milton.

She loved coaching, and coached boys golf and girls basketball for many years. In addition, she was a substitute teacher in the Erie Schools. Marcia was the biggest Hawkeye fan, attending home games for over 50 years and traveling to see the Hawkeyes play any chance she could.

Mabel Jean McSparin, 84 of Albany, died Sunday April 26, 2026 at her home. She was born on August 10, 1941 in Clinton, IA the daughter of Walter and Edith (Swift) Smither. She was a graduate of Fulton High School and St. Lukes Hospital School of Nursing School. She worked as a Registered Nurse and was devoted to her nursing career for over 30 years. Mabel married Charles McSparin on September 6, 1980. She liked to read, listen to audio books, swimming especially in the river and the Clinton pool when she was young, traveling, growing flowers and visiting the casino with her friend Iola. When Nintendo games first came out, she got all of her grandkids playing them and she enjoyed

Larry was born June 26, 1938, in Morrison, IL, to Max C. and Amelia Caroline (Albers) Sieh. He was raised in Morrison and was a 1956 graduate of Morrison High School. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. Larry was married to Jean Adams Wood, in Palm
Springs, CA, and together they had two daughters. In 1986, he married Judith A. Ediger, in Palm Desert, CA. Following his military service, Larry served as a police officer and ambulance driver, in Palm Springs, CA. He later worked in security, at Desert Hospital, in Palm Springs, before continuing his career as a probation officer, in Indio, CA. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #1905, in Palm Springs, CA. In later years, after returning to Morrison, he enjoyed the golf course and valued the friendships and time spent outdoors. He was an avid Chicago Bears Fan. Above all, he cherished time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Sieh of Morrison, IL; two daughters, Tory (Joel) Klink of Twentynine Palms, CA and Cynthia Niblo of La Quinta, CA; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and One brother, Donald (Loreta) Sieh of San Antonio, TX.

Keith Davis on May 27, 1979, in Champaign-Urbana, IL. Donna worked as a lighting consultant at Springfield Electric, where she met her husband, Steve. She later drove a school bus for RC Smith for 18 years, retiring in 2011. She was a former member of First Baptist Church in Morrison, where she shared her gift of music as a choir member. Donna had a beautiful singing voice that was both strong and expressive, and music remained an important part of her life. She was a gifted and creative person who enjoyed crocheting, knitting, quilting, and decorative painting, and she shared her talents by teaching classes at JoAnn Fabrics. She was also a member of the Rainbow Girls in her younger years and later the Illinois Heartland Decorative Artists Association. She had a love for classic cars, especially her Triumph, and took joy in collecting unique and meaningful items.
Donna was born January 7, 1953, in Centralia, IL, to Donald S. and Vivian L. (Fowler) Fulton. She was raised in a military family and attended schools in various locations throughout the world. Morrison home destroyed in early morning fire

A Morrison home was destroyed by a fire that broke out early Saturday morning.
Firefighters were called shortly after 4 a.m. to the 200 block of Cedar Street for a report of a home on fire.
The occupants all made it out of the home, according to the fire department.
The state fire marshal’s office has been called in to assist in the fire investigation.
The Morrison Fire Department, which remained on scene until 9 a.m., was assisted by Fulton and Prophetstown firefighters and 1-800-Boardup.

council member to resign as she prepares to move outside of city

Jackie Wilkin announced April 27 that she would be stepping down from the City Council following a personal move outside the city.
She announced the April 27 meeting would be her last meeting as a council member, with her official resignation to come soon.
It was announced that police officer Andrew Bennett, who graduated from the Sauk Valley Community College’s police academy, has joined the force and is patrolling the city. The Fulton Police Department is now fully staffed once again.
The council officially approved the annual budget, following a budget meeting preceding the meeting. In
addition, the council also voted in new water and sewer rates.
In the committee of the whole, the council collected notes from the previous meeting’s discussion on renting banner poles and presented a sample permit application for the use of banners within city limits for holidays and special events.
The council then presented proposals for an ordinance amending the pay rates of City Council members, commencing with the next term of office. No vote was raised, with the discussion set to continue at the next council meeting.
Finally, in upcoming news, Fulton is looking to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday July 16. The program is tentatively set for 6 p.m. and plans for the programming currently are in the works.

Fulton’s Volunteer Millers to host folk singer
In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the U.S., the Volunteer Millers of de Immigrant Dutch Windmill will host folk singer Bucky Halker on Tuesday, May 12. The performance will begin at 6 p.m. at the Windmill Cultural Center, 111 10th Ave. in downtown Fulton.
The performance will feature songs such as “This Land is Your Land” and many other Woody Guthrie songs.
Halker is a veteran Chicago songwriter, scholar and performer, sponsored by the Illinois Humanities Road Scholar program. He has received a host of awards for his music and writing, including the Archie Green Fellowship from the Library of Congress-American Folklife Center in 2012. The monthly Miller programs are free and open to the public. The facility is handicap accessible. Light refreshments are served following the performance. Lyndon will host its 35th annual car show on June 7.
The show will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Richmond Park. Registration is from now through May 15 and can be completed in person, by mail or online at villageoflyndon.org at a cost of $10 per vehicle.
Day-of registration will take place from 8 to 11 a.m. June 7, for $15 per vehicle.
“We broke our record with 162 entries last year, and we would love to see that record broken again this year to celebrate our 35th anniversary,” Event organizer Gerald Armstrong said.

The Children’s Art Preservation Association has announced the decision to pause Morrison’s annual Paint the Town event in 2026 as part of a broader effort to refresh its organizational mission and strengthen its volunteer and sponsorship base.
Paint the Town, in which downtown streets are painted, square by square, and turned into works of art, has long been a cornerstone community event.
The event that began in 1994 has been made possible through the generous commitment of dedicated volunteers and sponsors, according to a post on the organization’s Facebook page.
In recent years, however, participation and sponsorship have declined, impacting the event’s overall sustainability and limiting CAPA’s ability to fully advance its mission, according to the post.
Proceeds from the event directly support CAPA’s community initiatives, including scholarships, art cur-
riculum assistance and art-centered beautification projects.
“This temporary pause will allow CAPA to build a stronger foundation for the future – reimagining the structure of Paint the Town and developing more sustainable pathways for financial and community support,” according to the post.
Planning already is underway for the return of Paint the Town in September 2027, which will mark the event’s 30th anniversary.
CAPA invites community members to get involved by joining a planning committee or volunteering for the event. Those interested are encouraged to respond via CAPA’s social media channels with their name and contact information.

An open house will be held on Memorial Day of the new Harbor Crest Nursing Home. The board voted to employ Mrs. Gladys Gradert of Cordova as director of nurses for the new home. The tentative date for the opening of the home has been set for June 1.

The plant of Drives, Inc., was evacuated about 5:30 Tuesday afternoon after a female worker at the plant had received an anonymous telephone call informing her that a bomb had been placed in the plant and was set to explode at 7 p.m. A careful search of the premises by Drives employ-
ees, assisted by Fulton police and firemen, failed to discover anything that looked like a bomb.
Grounding-breaking ceremonies for the new $598,000 addition to the Harbor Crest Nursing Home are scheduled for Saturday. The $589,000 figure covers all of the new addition, some remodeling and improvements to the present home and all of the furnishings required for the 33 additional beds to be provided by the project.

During the 1985 Dutch Days Festival, crowds were estimated at 10,000-15,000 but this year’s festival was estimated at 20,000 – 22,000. There was truly something for everyone this year. Many out-of-town visitors stated that they would be back in future years because overlapping activities made it impossible to “take in everything.”

Marge Bos has been chosen by the Dutch Days Committee as this year’s Grand Marshal. Since this year’s theme is centered around Dutch architecture and area builders are being honored, Barb Mask, chairman of the committee, said they felt it was only fitting that Marge be chosen as they see her as a “builder” of the community.
The theme for Dutch Days Festival is “Dutch Architecture: Shelter & Purpose.”
The committee is honoring 16 people from Fulton who have earned their livings in building trades in Fulton. Morrison’s Carpet House plans move to new Lincolnway location
After more than 25 years serving the community, The Carpet House Inc. is preparing to move to its new location at 502 E. Lincolnway in Morrison.
The family owned business has long been a trusted name in flooring, known for quality products, expert installation and personal service.

Ebenezer Reformed Church’s mother-daughter dinner is May 12
Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison will host a presentation titled “Rise Up Again” on Tuesday, May 12, following the church’s mother-daughter dinner. The dinner starts at 6 p.m. with the program to start at 7 p.m. The program will feature Aubrey Krueger, a Sterling native who will talk about coping with mental health struggles and how movement can help.
Dinner tickets can be bought by calling the church office at 817-772-2472 or visit on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets cost $20 for adults and $15 for girls 12 and younger.

The second 2026 American Red Cross Morrison Community Blood Drive was held Thursday, March 19, at the United Methodist Church.
Many thanks to the UMC for providing the ARC the space to facilitate the March and July blood drives, so as to not interrupt the Knights of Columbus Lenten fish fry dinners being held at St. Mary’s Church the month of March.
The Bethesda Lutheran Church Ladies were the sponsor of the canteen. The Bethesda Church ladies who purchased groceries, prepared sandwiches, and baked cookies for the donors, volunteers, and staff were Nancy Usterbowski, Andrea Dalton, and Monica Anderson.
Thank you, ladies, for the delicious egg salad and chicken salad sandwiches, and all the terrific homemade goodies. We greatly appreciate BLC for sponsoring the March blood drive canteen every year.
Appreciation to Carole Patton for getting the post-escorts to help assist donors from the donation lounger to the canteen table; gratitude to Rick Barr and Pat Popkin for escorting, as well as Stephanie Mann for assisting in serving the sandwiches. I am indebted to all of you, whether you want the acknowledgement or not. We have such a generous bunch of donors. The ARC phlebotomists were short-staffed, down by two workers that day, but they mostly kept up with the steady flow of kind folks giving of their time and blood products to help out patients in need, and we barely noticed any lag time in how quickly donors went through the donation process.
The ARC goal for the drive was 57 good units to leave Morrison, so our efficiency was only 78.9%. Unfortunately, there were 11 cancellations and nine “no-shows”, but only six deferrals, which is 10.5% (ARC expects 10-12% of donors to get deferred).
Three wonderful “walk-ins” helped balance out the deficit. Yes, ARC takes walk-ins most of the time now; they quit during the pandemic, but we now encourage it. Rapid Pass users numbered 32, which is 71.1% of all those who came in, which is an excellent number! This helps speed things up for everyone, donors and staff alike.
Milestones for gallon pins were
attained by seven donors.
Dennis Zickert gained a one-gallon pin. One man earned a four-gallon pin and two men earned five-gallon pins, but they all three requested that their names be withheld from publishing.
Cathie Downs acquired a 13-gallon pin. Rod Olson reached 16-gallon pin status. Pam Shank accomplished an 18-gallon pin!
These seven fabulous regular donors have helped save a total of 1,144 patients’ lives in their lifetimes! What an achievement!
Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion. Become a blood donor today. It is easy and very rewarding. About 37% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, but only about 7% of those actually donate.
Blood cannot be artificially synthesized; it has to be taken from a donor and transfused to a recipient in a certain number of days. The supply used to be seven days out from actually needing to be used, but now that number is down to three days!

Sauk Valley Community College’s board approved a new strategic plan Monday that positions the college as a regional workforce hub while doubling down on student-centered support and community engagement through 2030.
The plan, drafted under the leadership of Aaron Schupbach-Roe with input from faculty and staff, introduces three new strategic directions: nourishing student support through the college’s Impact Program, cultivating access and engagement across the region, and growing career and workforce development partnerships.

Fulton wins Phil Sailer Invite: The Steamers tallied 132 points among nine teams at Augustana College. Sherrard (103) was runner-up, followed by Wethersfield (60), Riverdale (58), United Township (54) and Newman (54). Erie-Prohetstown (38) was eighth.
Fulton’s Kerby Germann, Jessa Read, Haley Smither and Brooklyn Thoms won the 4x200 relay. Ellie Mulder, Jordin Rathburn, Germann and Read won the 4x400. Rathburn won the high jump, Paige Cramer won the long jump and Smither won the triple jump

Geneseo 5, Erie-Prophetstown 2: Geneseo scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Panthers fell short on the road. The Maple Leafs scored four unearned runs against Ayden Klendworth. Klendworth had two RBIs, and Lakyn Renkes had two of E-P’s five hits.
Kewanee 11, Fulton 3: Zoe Kunau had two of Fulton’s seven hits in the nonconference home setback. Kerby Germann, Haley Smither (one triple) and Kunau had RBIs for the Steamers.

Anderson continues record season at Oregon Hall of Fame Classic

With the boys state track meet at the end of the month, there is one word Morrison coach Kevin Kilker used to describe star runner Brady Anderson.
“Ready, that’s what he is, ready,” Kilker said after Anderson broke his third meet record at the 47th Oregon Hall of Fame Classic on Friday. “Brady is right on pace to win the 100, 200 and 400 at state. His biggest obstacle might be his teammate, Levi [Milder]. It’s unbelievable what he’s is accomplishing.”
Anderson started his record-breaking spree in the 100 meters, edging Alec Schlichting of Lena-Winslow, 10.7 to 10.85, with Milder next at 11.00. It was the exact finish downstate in Class 1A last year among the trio of Northwest Upstate Illini Conference sprint stars.
The previous Hawk Classic record was set in 1989 by Mark McClain of Freeport Aquin at 10.74.
“Now, I want the state record [10.47],” Anderson said, “and to win state again as a team. We have high expectations and need to perform really well to do it.”
Last year, Morrison crushed the 1A competition, winning by 25 points over second-place Tuscola, who has a runner with faster times thus far than Anderson in both the 100 (10.39) and 200 (21.42).
Next up for Anderson was a race he did not compete in downstate, the 400 meters. A 48.80 clocking bested the Hawk Classic record of 49.07 by former state champ Martin McCormick of Oregon in 2005.
With the chill of the night settling in, Anderson capped his stellar performance with a meet record 21.63 in the 200, holding off Milder (21.84) and Schlichting (22.22). At last year’s state meet, it was Milder beating Anderson 21.44-21.67.
“I like to think of him as another brother,” Milder said. “Without each other, we wouldn’t be as good as we are.”
Anderson, Milder, Koltin Swaim and sophomore Xavier Baldwin teamed up to win the 400-meter relay with a time of 43.27, as Anderson made up a 10-meter deficit over Le-Win and Rochelle on the anchor leg. Top seed Marengo had a comfortable lead but botched the final handoff.
“Both Brady and Levi are team play -
make it to Saturday’s final for the first time ever downstate in the relays. At Oregon the unit of Carsten Wade, Konner Johnson, Draven Zier and newcomer Zyacn Haverland finished third in the 800-relay and fifth in the 400 relay.
“We’re under state-qualifying in both,” Milledgeville coach Jason Wroble said.
“To give an idea of how tough the NUIC is, we finished fourth last year in the 4x100 in the conference, but 10th downstate. The girls have had state-placing relays, but the boys never have. We need to get into that top 9 to make it.”
One state relay power that was well below its typical standards was Forreston-Polo, as several of their relay legs were attending a school band event in Freeport.
“We’re still waiting for that one good day where everyone’s healthy and the weather is good,” F-P coach Tony Hardin said.
Newman was without its top runner and jumper, Rylan Alvarado.
“He’s helped tremendously, Newman coach Pat Warkins said. “We kept him out tonight because of the cold weather. He has a slight hamstring injury and didn’t want to take any chances. Without him, it hurt us in the long jump, 100, 200 and 800 relay.”
Morrison’s Josh McDearmon was another key no-show.

Morrison finished fifth in the Hawk Classic team standings with 57 points, but that isn’t an indication of how they will fare downstate, because a couple of sprinters can dominate the scoring against elite competition.
For the second year in a row, Rochelle won the meet. Behind nationally-ranked pole vaulter Andrew Nuyen, the Hubs had 98 points to 92 for Winnebago.
Nuyen broke his own meet record with a 16-foot,7-inch clearance and had three close attempts at 17-2.
“I just got to clear a height. After that, it’s fun,” said Nuyen, in full recovery mode after a bout with mononucleosis that interrupted his indoor season.
He also gave the Hubs 10 valuable
points by winning the long jump with a mark of 21-4, an event he took up last year.
“The funny thing about Andrew is he needed something to do to kill time while he was waiting for his turn to vault,” Rochelle jumps coach Vic Worthington said. “Since the long jump pit was next to the pole vault, he came over to me and asked to jump. Three weeks later, he broke the school record.”
Erie-Prophetstown picked up a first place in the 3,200-meter relay, with Gus Schultz, Justin Wainscott, Braeden Punke and Nathan Punke hitting a state-qualifying time of 8:30. Last year, Schultz, Wainscott and Braeden Punke ran downstate.
“We didn’t make it out of prelims,” E-P coach Jon Schlagheck. “Our final hump is to make it to Day 2 at state.”
Nathan Punke, ranked No. 4 in 1A pole vaulting, was second to Nuyen with a 14-foot clearance.
Milledgeville-Eastland is looking to
“We need him back for the relays,” Anderson said. “He broke his arm in practice, falling while hurdling. He should be ready to go soon.”
Oregon got a win from Daniel Gonzales in the 800 meters with a time of 1:58.91. Trailing Aiden Vazquez of Winnebago and Tim Starwalt of Byron, Gonzales surged past the pair in the final 100 meters, with all three breaking two minutes.
“I feel pretty good about the race, but was too slow in the first lap [58 seconds]. I need to be about 56-57,” Gonzales said.
Freshman Ian Hassler of Amboy, who ranks in the top 10 in 1A discus, won his specialty in a tiebreaker situation. Hassler and Isaac Wills of Indian Creek tied at 1547, but Hassler was awarded the win, having a better second throw.
“As state champ coming out of junior high and a dad who threw for Amboy, we knew he was going to be special,” Amboy coach Jeremy Wittenauer said. “Ian has a great chance to place at state.”
