Driven by diversity According to the Illinois State Board of Education, Fischer serves 488 students, 31 percent of whom are white, 4 percent black, 53 percent Hispanic, 9 percent Asian, 1 percent Pacific Islander, and 2 percent are multiracial. “I think there’s always been a positive attitude in the Fischer community about its diversity,” Bailey said. Leonard said Conrad Fischer Elementary is probably the school with the largest population of ELL students in

the district. At Fischer, 43 percent of students are English Language Learners, compared to 5 percent within the entire district, according to the State Board of Education’s 2013 numbers. Bailey explained she’s seen ELL students succeed academically just as much as their nonELL peers. “The Fischer kids will be academically competitive by the time they get to York [High School],” Bailey said. Fischer also will host adult English as a Second Language classes this fall, led by the College of DuPage. “I think it’s a really great opportunity for our parents to get involved,” Leonard said. She’s looking forward to working with teachers at all grade levels to make ELL students bilingual students. “If we’re going to prepare students for global citizenship, they need to be able to communicate with people from across the globe,” Leonard said.

Leader is vice chairman of the Public Affairs and Safety Committee, which recommended the change to pushcart food vendor locations to the council. Leader recalled Krumrey speaking during the public comments section of council meetings about A-frame sidewalk signs, but Leader said Krumrey never approached him about the issue, specifically. “It came as a surprise,” Leader said of finding out Krumrey sent the email in his name. He added his committee does not regulate signs. Krumrey was previously charged with theft April 29 after police saw video surveillance footage of Krumrey putting a Nu Crepes sign, located where Uslander used to sell hot dogs, in his car April 27. Krumrey told Suburban Life following his arrest he did not steal the sign but brought it to City Hall because it is a safety hazard and against city code. The charge was later dismissed and the case closed June 12 after a complaining witness did not appear in court, according to DuPage County court records. “I think at this point. I will wait for my court date,” Krumrey said when asked about the emails. “There are obviously some powerful people in Elmhurst who wish to make a point,” he added. Krumrey is scheduled to appear Aug. 26 in DuPage County Court.

ELMHURST – An Elmhurst man is scheduled to appear in court later this month after police arrested him for personation of two city officials. Michael Krumrey, 46, of the 400 block of W. Crockett Ave., was charged July 28 with two counts of false personation of a city official, Class A misdemeanors. Krumrey allegedly sent emails a few months ago to a pastor at Pathways Community Church in Elmhurst notifying the church that its A-frame sign in front of York Theatre where the congregation holds services was in violation of a city ordinance, Elmhurst Police Deputy Chief Dominic Panico said. The emails appeared to come from email accounts belonging to 2nd Ward Alderman Norman Leader and the city’s Planing and Zoning Administrator, Than Werner, Panico said. A pastor from the church notified both Leader and Werner, who then contacted the police, who began an investigation using computer forensics and subpoenaed AT&T records. “You can find out who sent what through the computer systems,” Panico said. Panico also said Krumrey admitted to sending the emails. Leader said he’s spoken with Krumrey, a 2nd Ward resident, during his tenure on the city council several times, but Leader said they always had “pleasant conversations.” “Then this whole business came up with the hot dog lady,” Leader said. A-frame signs on York Street were mentioned during the City Council’s previous discussions about pushcart food vendors. Pamela Uslander, known as The Hot Dog Lady of Elmhurst, is the city’s only pushcart vendor. She previously operated in the

ELMHURST – When the Elmhurst Park District suggested David Cooke build a bee box for his Eagle Scout project, the 15-year-old put his shop skills to work. “I thought it would be a really cool project to help save the lives of bees,” David said. He assembled a crew of about a dozen Scouts from his troop, Troop 117 sponsored by Christ United Methodist Church, some friends and family to drill tens of thousands of holes in 96 cedar blocks for the bee box. “This was my first time doing a project like this,” David said. He relied on the skills he learned from shop class at school and fashioning pinewood derby cars with his dad.

ship Training camp. “It’s kind of like going from school to a job,” David said of using his leadership skills outside of camp. He also managed to collect all of the supplies needed for the project through donations. Those who helped build the bee box loaned each other tools and after a few unfruitful phone calls, David called First Fence in Melrose Park, which donated the wood. “I joined because my dad was a Boy Scout. I wanted to be like him. My dad’s an Eagle Scout as well,” David said. His dad, Dave, helped him with the woodworking project, but so did his younger siblings, who are both Scouts as well. “He was really excited to drill the blocks,” David said of his 7-year-old brother, Eddie. His sister, Elizabeth, 12, also gave up two hours to assist with the project. A few friends chipped in after the eight-hour work day to finish up the box, and David plans to help install it near the botanical garden at Wilder Park in a few weeks. “It was a lot more difficult than I expected, but it was worth it,” he said.

Price, who suggested the idea to David, said native bees usually lay their eggs in holes in dead trees or branches, but in today’s society, dead trees are usually removed. David also built a 4-by-4foot frame to hold the blocks. The bee box is meant to house bees native to Illinois. Price said the bee box provides a safe place for bees to lay their eggs but also allows park visitors to observe the bees, which generally don’t bother people near the box like they would if their hive was disturbed. David learned about more than just bees through his Eagle Scout project. His dad, a business man, helped him plan out the entire project, including a lot of the logistics. Even though David planned more time than he expected the project to take, he and his team still needed to put in a few extra hours. “One thing was sometimes the group got quite off task,” David said. He said the project gave him a chance to use many of the leadership skills he’d learned as a staff member at the National Youth Leader-

Elmhurst woman gets 4 years for slow-speed chase SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ELMHURST – An Elmhurst woman pleaded guilty Aug. 8 to leading police on a slowspeed chase through the suburbs last year. Nicole S. Evans, 30, of the 400 block of East Vallette Street, was sentenced to four years in prison, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Paul Darrah. Evans will get credit for time served since October

About 20 minutes later, police spotted a vehicle matching the description, a red 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser, leaving a gas station at York and Green streets. When an officer attempted to stop Evans for a traffic vio-

lation, she refused to pull over and other officers joined the slow-speed pursuit, according to a news release from Bensenville police. Police said Evans stopped at Route 83 and Hillside Drive because of traffic, and a detective tried to open her door but it was locked. Evans then backed up and swerved toward the detective while maneuvering around stopped cars. She continued to lead police through Elk Grove Vil-

lage back to Bensenville, Wood Dale and finally Itasca where the chase ended in a McDonald’s parking lot at Irving Park Road and Prospect Avenue, the release stated. Evans backed into a squad car and struck another vehicle in an attempt to further evade police before striking a tree, police said. Evans also was ordered to pay $3,873.71 in restitution for damage she caused to both the Bensenville and Elk Grove police.

REVIEWING REFRACTIONS A routine eye exam includes a “refraction test” (or vision test), which can determine what lens prescription (if any) is needed to bring vision to optimum levels. “Refractive errors” (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism) occur when light rays entering the eye cannot focus exactly on the retina, resulting in blurred vision. Change must be part of all business plans Typically, businesses owners and their management teams, especially at small businesses (once known as mom-and-pops), are so invested in the day-to-day operations of “keeping the doors open and the lights on” they have little or no time to strategically plan for the future. As a baby boomer, I Quigley first listened to 78-revolutions-per-minute recordings of Broadway musicals on my mother’s stereo hi-fi (high fidelity), started my own collection of 45s in 1966, installed an eighttrack tape player under the dash of my mint 1963 Oldsmobile Cutlass in 1973 during my senior year at Immaculate Conception High School, installed an in-dash cassette tape player in my mom’s 1974 Cutlass on Christmas Eve of 1977, drove sedans with compact disc players and now can sync up multiple music formats in my 70th Anniversary Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Think about the industry-related businesses that have come and gone in those 50 years. During my 20-year career as a newspaperman and journalist, I first typed out stories on a 1955 Remington, advanced to an IBM electromatic and then purchased my own word processor. I first sat in front of a desktop computer in 1991 when I returned to Elmhurst College, my alma mater, to work in communications, special events and fundraising. While I now have a laptop computer with desktop port, I also can write and post stories about the Elmhurst Chamber and our members to our website, social media pages and other online outlets from my smartphone. While the history of aviation dates back thousands of years starting with Chinese-designed kites, it wasn’t until the lighterthan-air concepts for flight via dirigibles, zeppelins and blimps that centuries of water or rail transportation for passengers as well as cargo was first impacted. Dirigibles were viewed as the future in air travel until the Hindenburg crashed in flames at Lakehurst, N.J. in 1937. The airline industry that took flight after World War I expanded its wings dramatically post-World War II, especially in the United States. As flight became faster and more cost-effective, travel by boat or train was relegated to those passengers with more leisure time. So unless you want to risk getting some unwanted leisure time, it’s wise to have a plan ... and then be prepared to change on the fly.

Good luck to York High School alumna Ponnu Padiyara, who will travel to Turkey in the fall to teach English for 10 months on a Fulbright Award. The 22-year-old recently graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago with degrees in both biological sciences and psychology and plans to pursue a law degree and work in health policy. There was movement last week in the ongoing effort to get the city of Elmhurst, Park District and School District 205 to work together on stormwater flooding solutions. The City Council approved an action plan that prioritized four proposed projects, and the city will now ask for a commitment from the Park District and school districts before moving forward with additional planning.

Stickney trustees need to put citizens first I live in the village of Stickney. Taxpayers’ dollars are being wasted by people in office who are putting their political agendas before the taxpayers. We voted out a tax cheat from office and had a trustee who had to resign because he was collecting a disability from the police department and collecting as a trustee. Now, we have a bigheaded softball president who is a trustee in our village and votes against the mayor of Stickney out of spite. We have a trustee who can’t make a decision on her own to save her life. We also have a trustee who owns a business in town and has voted against our budget. These three trustees are wasting our tax dollars. They should put the citizens of Stickney ahead of their own personal gain. What a shame.

I’m a senior in Lombard. Can someone please explain to me why the Lombard Post Office does not have an automatic door for handicapped people? Villa Park, Elmhurst, Wheaton and Glen Ellyn all have automatic doors. I tried to get in the other day, I dropped my packages – it’s very disconcerting. DMK Burger Bar delivers pure temptation LOMBARD – I’m the kind of person who receives a whole wheel of cheese for Christmas, and it’s gone before the new year. The kind of person you can’t leave unsupervised in a gourmet cheese section for longer than five minutes without having to go back for the full-sized cart. So while the gourmet burgers at DMK Burger Bar are the main attraction, I couldn’t help but note the excellence of the cheese and everything else sitting on top of the beef or bison patties. I met a friend at the Lombard location of the Chicago favorite after work last week, settled onto a bar stool, and immediately wanted pretty much every burger offered. DMK’s menu is deceptively simple at first glance: 14 numbered burgers on the left – no names, just ingredients – and a list of sides and appetizers on the right. Among the 14 are five that don’t use red meat, and are based on fish, turkey or vegetables. The simple concept belies the fact that once you start reading the fine print, the experience turns into abundant choices. Any of the patties, all made from grass-fed beef, can be substituted with bison for $2 extra. Ravenous customers can add a second patty for $3, or an egg to any burger for $1. It was my first visit to DMK, so I didn’t go crazy with the add-ons. The bartender was quick to bring us our beverages – the third word in DMK Burger Bar is taken seriously. The entire back of the menu is full of craft beer drafts and bottles, and a wall chalkboard lists craft cocktails. Programs on the move Local schools part of new conference alignments By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com Conference realignment has been a buzz topic in college athletics over the past few years, and the Chicago-area high school scene is going through similar changes. The shift is taking place for both public and private schools. Some are moving from long-standing conferences to new territory, both competitively and geographically. Changing to a new conference entails more than just making new schedules and resetting GPS bus routes. Craig Etheridge, boys basketball head coach at Westmont, led the Sentinels from the old Southwest Suburban Conference to the Suburban Prairie Conference to their current place in the Interstate Eight Conference. “It certainly is an adjustment,” Etheridge said. “For me, one of the hardest things was leaving behind all the coaches from the first conference and the working relationships and friendships that go along with competing against each other. The next season, working with a new group of guys, it was different and there definitely was an adjustment period.” With several schools making changes, the conference landscape is going to look much different in the near future.

DVC upheaval One of the leagues that has seen a major alteration is the DuPage Valley Conference, which has been around since 1975. Lake Park came in from the Upstate Eight Conference while West Chicago moved from the DVC to the UEC beginning with the 2013-14 school year. This fall Glenbard East and West Aurora also move from the DVC to the UEC, leaving the league with just six teams. Glenbard East football coach John Walters downplayed any major adjustment in entering a new league. “There’s really no secrets going into Friday night,” Walters said. “We have an idea of what they’re going to do and we have an idea of what we’re going to do.” Because of a lack of available

Metro Suburban mixes it up Another league undergoing an overhaul is the Metro Suburban Conference. Seven schools – IC Catholic, Wheaton Academy, Aurora Central Catholic, St. Edward, Chicago Christian, Walther Christian and Guerin – joined the MSC from the now disbanded Suburban Christian Conference. The MSC, which will have two divisions, becomes the only football conference with both public

This is the first time during that period that RB won’t be in the same conference as Elmwood Park. n If Glenbard East had stayed in the DVC, which now consists of Glenbard North, Lake Park, Naperville Central, Naperville North, Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South, the Rams would have had to fight history on the football field. The Rams haven’t won a football game against any of those schools since 2003. n This is the second straight year West Chicago will have a new look to its schedule in most sports. The Wildcats joined the Upstate Eight Valley last school year and shift over to the Upstate Eight River starting this fall, where they will face seven new conference foes.

Mixed conferences exist around the state with Boylan Catholic (Rockford), Althoff Catholic (Belleville) and Sacred-Heart Griffin (Springfield) competing against public schools. “I don’t think it changes much,” IC Catholic athletic director Tom Schergen said of switching. “It just changes our schedule and teams we’re playing. From a geography standpoint it changes our schedule. We’re in the West division where everyone is right around us.” In the MSC West, IC will play against former SCC foes ACC and Wheaton Academy along with public schools Riverside Brookfield, Glenbard South and Fenton. This is the first time IC will be in a confer-

ence with public schools, but Schergen noted that IC previously played most of the teams in the MSC in non-conference games so a working relationship already existed. “Maybe it’s possibly the first time we play RB in things, but we’ve played Ridgewood and Elmwood Park before,” Schergen said. “Even the private schools, Illiana and Timothy, we’ve played in things, so it’s not all new to us.” The Knights also get a more extended pairing with Timothy Christian. The two Elmhurst schools already scheduled each other in non-conference games in numerous sports along with being paired together for just about every IHSA postseason regional. RB boys basketball coach Tom McCloskey, who tries to schedule the Bulldogs against top competition regularly, welcomed the new competition. “I think the new conference will be tougher,” McCloskey said. “Some tougher schools with great basketball traditions. It’s just a new situation.” He doesn’t believe playing with more private schools will change the dynamic of the league. “I didn’t think that was a much of a factor at all,” McCloskey said. “Some of the schools, Wheaton Academy and the others, have strong basketball traditions and it’s a priority at their school.”

New-look Catholic league The remaining SCC schools, including Montini and St. Francis, were left looking for a new home. Marian Central Catholic joined the East Suburban Catholic Conference and the rest joined the Chicago Catholic League for just football and boys soccer this year. In 2015, all of the boys sports will be members of the CCL while the girls sports will be joining the GCAC. “To me personally, it is absolute excitement,” St. Francis athletic director Dan Hardwick said about the conference changes over the next two years. “Both of these leagues have been bending over backwards for us, that is the best way to put it. They’ve been so accommodating and they’ve been so excited to get us in their leagues. “It’s going to be a challenge but we are relishing the challenge. That is all part of the excitement.”

Benet AD Gary Goforth believes the latest proposal stems from the success factor issue. Already competing in the larger classes in the playoffs (7A for football, 4A for softball, basketball and volleyball), the Redwings wouldn’t be greatly affected by the success factor. Goforth didn’t want to talk

specifics until reading the proposal, but he believes a complete separation isn’t necessarily the best solution. “If it would force the private and nonboundary schools out of the IHSA, I think that would be a detriment to high school athletics,” he said. “We enjoy playing the public schools around us.”

Coaches’ perspective Tom McCloskey also has been on both sides of the debate, having been a boys basketball coach at Montini (head coach) and Nazareth (assistant) before his current head coaching gig at Riverside Brookfield. “I kind of like to think I was the same coach at Montini and Riverside Brookfield,” he said.

“I believe in all the things that we’re doing. My approach has almost been the exact same. It’s basketball. It’s getting kids to love playing and getting a program together. It’s not really much different. “But I do see both sides of it, obviously private schools have an advantage as far as getting kids outside of certain boundaries.” If the split were to occur, it would drastically change the playoff landscape for local small schools like Lisle and Westmont. Those two schools typically mix with private schools like IC Catholic, Timothy Christian, Aurora Christian, Walther Christian and St. Edward in the postseason. “I’m torn because I get along with all those guys and they have good teams and good programs,” Westmont boys basketball coach Craig Etheridge said of his private school brethren. “Part of me is loyal to the concept of playing the same teams, but I’ve also lost kids to Timothy Christian, Nazareth and Montini. I’m curious to see how it plays out on both sides.” Bolingbrook’s boys basketball team was knocked out of the playoffs by Benet in 2012. The Raiders and Redwings are typically placed in the same sectional in the playoffs, and this past season Benet won the sectional and went on to play for a state title in Class 4A. “I think when schools that take whoever walks through the door play against schools that are able to recruit a little bit, it’s like comparing apples and oranges,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. “That being said, we’ll play anybody anywhere. All that stuff is out of my control. I’m just trying to get our kids ready to play.”

First-year Glenbard South athletic director Tim Carlson has a unique perspective on the issue, having spent 12 years working at private schools, including 10 as an AD at St. Viator and Guerin. “We are certainly right at the beginning stages and we don’t have any of the details,” he said. “But in all honestly, do I think this is the answer to the problem? No. There is something to be said about playing everybody and challenging yourself and playing programs that are strong. It forces you to raise your level of play a little bit.” His biggest concern is what might happen to the Metro Suburban Conference, of which the Raiders are a member, if such a proposal passes. The league is expanding to 14 schools this year and includes both public and private institutions. “From the Metro Suburban Conference perspective, we have a private and public mix,” Carlson said. “Talking with John Treiber (former Glenbard South AD) and talking to some other ADs, what makes the MSC work is we’ve been able to work through issues and do it collaboratively. “If something like this happens, what would it mean for the Metro Suburban? Does it do damage to the conference? It’s a tough sell. We are in a unique position and so much work has been put in by these ADs, certainly not by me, I’m new, but especially John Treiber. I’d hate to see that crumble.” A few other conferences in the state – such as the Central State Eight (with Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin), the Northern Illinois Conference (with Rockford Boylan), the Western Big Six (with Rock Island Alleman) and the South Seven Conference (with Belleville Althoff) – also mix public and nonboundary schools but not to the extent of the MSC. Benet and Nazareth are two area schools that compete in East Suburban Catholic Conference, which is comprised en-
