ELMHURST – Elmhurst College nursing students routinely practice simulations with robotic patients, but this week the Elmhurst Fire Department joined the students for an emergency rescue situation. “A lot of times, you’re educating in a vacuum. … Here, they’re really seeing the system, which is a wonderful learning opportunity,” said Julie Hoff, director of Elmhurst College’s Deicke Center for Nursing. Tuesday’s simulation involved the fire department as well as cooperation with Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, where construction is nearly finished on the college’s Simulation Center. Once completed, the 4,600-square-foot laboratory and classroom space, located in the hospital’s lower level, will enable the college’s nursing students to practice and build clinical skills without risk to patients. “We’re going to use it for our new nurses,” said Kathy DeLaPaz, program director of Emergency Services at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. She explained that even though they no longer are students, nurses can benefit from simulations of less common situations. Elmhurst paramedics plan to also use the new center for ongoing educa-

mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Funny ladies Lizzy Rudakas and Kirsten Mose don’t take long to name Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as they list some of their favorite comedians. “I think it’s much harder to be a comedian and be a female than it is to be a guy comedian,” said Mose, 17. Even as she acknowledges the challenge, she and Rudakas aren’t letting the odds stop them from performing a sketch comedy show in Chicago beginning next week. “Survival: A Sketch Comedy Show” is inspired by the hilarious moments that often accompany the high school experience. Mose, who will be a senior at York High School in the fall, and Rudakas, who graduated from York in the spring, said many of their ideas came from their own experience navigating the weird kids and crazy teachers, and they expect their audience will be able to relate. “I think one of the things

The pair met during a production of Bugsy Malone at Elmhurst Children’s Theatre, in which they played members of a flapper girl posse. Since then, they’ve started their own sketch comedy group, Just Bust a Move, performed at festivals and taken the stage at The Second City. This is the first show written, produced and performed

by the pair that’s not for a festival. “The reason why I like sketch so much is because you write everything yourself,” Rudakas said. Unlike other shows they’ve written, the teens needed to learn alternate ways to end their sketches without introducing a third person since there’s only two of them. Soszko, the girls refined their sketches into a 30-to-45-minute variety show, complete with singing, dancing and acting. The same tap dance they learned during their first production together even made a comeback. “It can’t just be, ‘Oh, here’s this funny thing that I said. There has to be structure to it, which is probably the hardest part ... learning how to actually write,” Mose said. Rudakas said she finds everything funny so she’s thankful to have Mose to bounce ideas off of. “Funny faces, I would say, would be my forté,” said Mose, describing her own sense of humor. Both girls would love to continue doing sketch comedy throughout their lives, but they also have day jobs in mind. Rudakas, who has volun-

teered at Brookfield Zoo the past few summers, plans to study psychology at DePaul University beginning in the fall and eventually have a career studying animal behavior. Mose will finish her high school career at York as president of the Drama Club, but plans to major in neuroscience in college and minor in performing arts. “I think for me, it’s just always the fact that as much as I love theatre, performing and sketch comedy, I know that it’s not necessarily the most stable of jobs to get into,” Mose said. They also recognize as women, they may have a harder time making it as comedians. Rudakas explained the challenge facing funny ladies by recounting a bit she’d seen Will Farrell do where he did a song and dance, but the funniest part of it all was he was wearing tight-fitted pants. “That would not be funny if that was a woman. It was like only something a man could do,” Rudakas said. When asked if they would like to inspire other young girls to pursue comedy like they’ve been inspired by other women comedians, the pair replied, “I hope so.”

His dad landed a job patrolling the lakefront for the Chicago Park District in the 1930s after he applied at a friend’s suggestion. “When he was with the park district, he was head of publicity for the stock car races at Soldier Field,” Tom said. He said his dad escorted celebrities who attended the races. Gregory Peck and Janet Leigh Curtis are a few of the names Tom remembers hearing that his dad drove around town. Bill also experienced the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Bill worked his way up to captain with the Chicago police after the department took over the Park District patrol. He also took a second job as a model for advertisements. “He did it for additional money to put my brother and I through Catholic schools,” Tom said of he and his late brother, also named Bill. “Of course it lent to his ham side,” Tom said. Tom joked that billboards could have been named after his dad. While Bill never made it to California to be in movies like he said he wanted to do when he was younger, his grandson, David, works in the film industry. What Tom remembers most, though, is his dad’s family values. He recalls feeling at bit embarrassed when his father came to watch him play intramural sports in high school, but now realizes the special effort his dad made to support him. “The kind of family man [he was] and the kind of example that he set for the rest of his family is the important stuff,” Tom said.

ELMHURST – When Bill Payne died at 103 years old last month, many remembered him as a former Elmhurst police chief, but Payne accomplished much more during his century-long life. “I never found a person that didn’t say he was such a nice guy,” his son Tom Payne said. Tom, 73, was William already grown Payne when his father moved to Elmhurst from Chicago in 1968 to take the chief position, but he knows his dad loved the job. “I believe he must have done a good job there,” Tom said. Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth remembered when he took the job in 2012, Bill called him up. “He welcomed me when I came here,” Ruth said. Bill lived at Lexington Square in Elmhurst for about the past decade, but Ruth said the chiefs used to visited him there for lunch. Tom remembers at the memorial service for his mother, Ardele, who died in August 2013, his dad spotted Ruth and a few other police officers from across the room. Bill insisted someone push his wheelchair over to the group of cops. Tom said his dad immediately seemed younger as he chatted with the officers. “He dropped 10 years,” Tom recalled. Tom worried when his father broke one hip at 91 and then the other at 95, but Bill, who would have been 104 on Oct. 9, stayed in Elmhurst with his wife after his son moved west. “I think he was waiting around for the Cubs to win the World Series,” Tom said. As much joy as Bill gained from his career as a police officer, it wasn’t a job he’d dreamed of as a child. He more or less fell into it. “This was during the depression and during the depression you took whatever

Home sales set back by harsh winter By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – A comparison of real estate data from May showed an increase in the number of homes sold in Elmhurst from May 2013, but a small drop in the average sale price of those homes. According to data provided by Mainstreet Organization of Realtors, 62 Elmhurst homes sold in May 2014, a 12.7 percent increase over the 55 sold in May 2013. The average price of those homes was $451,784, which is down 6.8 percent from $484,720 in May 2013, according to the same data. Larry Reedy, president of L.W. Reedy Real Estate in Elmhurst, said looking at the month-to-month comparison from year to year is like looking at a snapshot instead of watching an entire movie. Reedy said the slight drop in average home prices reflects a

late spring market. “This year everything got moved back two months or so,” Reedy said. Reedy said fewer homes sold for more than $600,000 this May compared to last, which he credits for the slight drop in average price. Reedy said the May 2014 numbers reflect contracts written in February and March. The harsh winter lowered the number of contracts written for homes more than $600,000, but he’s seen an increase in contracts written for higher-priced homes during April and May this year. “I think we’re finally realizing what that winter did to our market,” Reedy said. He said he expects Elmhurst housing prices to grow in June, reflecting the growing number of higher-priced contracts written in recent months. “We don’t see any indication of prices coming down in Elmhurst,” Reedy said.

Recent Elmhurst College graduate Colleen Dhamer knows firsthand how important simulations are to succeeding as a nurse. As a student, Dhamer remembers working in a simulation where a baby seized. The next time she went to the hospital, she has an infant patient who seized. “I knew what to do because I had that practice in the lab,” Dhamer said. Excited for the new Simulation Center, Westbury saw Tuesday’s simulation as just the beginning for an event she hopes to host several times each year. “This is just like a stepping stone to what’s really going to happen,” Westbury said.

2 county Dems removed from November ballot

Elmhurst Rotary awards $20K in scholarships

The DuPage County Election Commission has removed two Democratic nominees from the November ballot because they each failed to secure enough valid signatures to run, according to the commission. Brian Wolter, who was slated to run for president of the forest preserve district and Max J. Havlick, who was going to run for the DuPage County Board District 2 seat, both have been removed. As a result, the Republicans nominated for those positions will run unopposed. Joe Cantore of Oak Brook is running for forest preserve president and Pete DiCianni of Elmhurst is running for the District 2 board seat. District 2 covers all or portions of Addison, Clarendon Hills, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Naperville, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Villa Park, Westmont and Woodridge.

ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Rotary Club has awarded $20,500 in college scholarships to 13 Elmhurst students, according to a news release. Five graduating seniors from York High Schools received initial scholarships, while eight college students were given scholarship renewals. York scholarship winners include Megan Bogolia, Samantha Heiberger, Hannah Latimer, James Pukala and Molly Schlecht College scholarship renewal students are Leah Gortowski, Nicole Heiberger, Amber Hogberg, Ainsley McGrath, Alexandra Orel, Charles Pozen, Emilio Salvia and Adam Vocalino-Szymanski. Cooper’s Corner stakes claim on big flavor WINFIELD – When friends recommended Cooper’s Corner, we decided to pay a visit to the restaurant that opened earlier this year in the spot that once housed the venerable Viking. We walked in on a Friday night to the sound of live music and were offered a choice of seating in the expansive lounge near the band or one of the dining rooms. We opted for the dining room closest to the bar for a happy medium. The space is updated, yet preserves classic old-school steakhouse charm with large booths, banquettes, tables with comfy chairs and lots of elbow room. And while the chef puts plenty of emphasis on roast beef, steak and other red meat dishes, there’s a healthy accent on seafood, pastas, freshly prepared crab cakes, sandwiches and other options that make the decision of what to order pleasurably conflicted. We opted to try the stuffed sesame portabella appetizer, which complemented the meaty mushroom with goat cheese, caramelized onion, and roasted red pepper that popped. “It’s an interesting blend of flavors and textures,” raved my date. We each chose soup over salad: a creamy clam chowder and a baked onion. The latter was good, but a tad salty. My selection of an entree became easy when I spotted the slow-roasted prime rib featured at the top of the menu, and chose the smallest of the three portion choices. It arrived rare per my request, and was sublimely tender and juicy. Its side dish was a superb mix of sauteed zucchini, broccoli, carrot, squash and onion cooked al dente. My companion chose one of the evening’s specials: the baked berry Florentine stuffed pork loin. The fruit topping made it a memorable dish. A massive portion, we enjoyed it for lunch the next day.

Cooper’s Corner, with its large parking lot, is easy to find on Roosevelt Road on the border between Winfield and

Wheaton, and well worth a trip for a relaxing experience, deliciously fresh ingredients, friendly service and the added option of hitting the dance floor Fridays and Saturdays. Some area teams, like Montini and Addison Trail, are taking part in competitive 7-on-7 tournaments while others are just happy to learn about their teams and develop chemistry via summer camps and practices. Area summer camps start march toward high school football season 26. The Broncos later lost in the second round of the double-elimination day two, but rebounded with five straight wins before Maine South eliminated them. Glenbard East is getting a later start to its summer preparation for a couple reasons. First, the various Rams teams are spreading out summer camps so multi-sport athletes aren’t getting overworked doing multiple workouts in one day. Second, coach John Walters thinks the team will benefit from consecutive weeks of summer practices instead of multiple breaks in between, one which would be for the week of the Fourth of July.

The Rams start summer practice July 7. Otherwise, things remain the same. “It’s the same drill,” Walters said. “We’re going to do our thing, install our offense and defense. We have 7-on7s and linemen challenges ahead.” The Rams are preparing for a debut season in the Upstate Eight Conference in the fall. East is in the Valley division and will face Neuqua Valley, Metea Valley, Waubonsie Valley, Bartlett, South Elgin, East Aurora and old DuPage Valley Conference foe West Aurora. Facing an almost entirely new schedule presents challenges, but Walters doesn’t think it

will have a big impact come game night. “There’s really no secrets going into Friday night,” Walters said. “We have an idea of what they’re going to do and they will have an idea of what we’re going to do.” For Willowbrook, camp started June 16. The Warriors already hosted a 7-on-7 event on June 26 and host another July 12. Another West Suburban Conference team, York, is looking to rebound from two straight losing seasons under new head coach Matt Monken. The Dukes haven’t missed the playoffs for three straight seasons since 1985.

Retirement life ‘is perfect’ for former Bull By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen endure as all-time great players for the Chicago Bulls. However, Toni Kukoc earned his own spot in Bulls’ lore in 1994 when he hit a buzzer-beater to defeat the New York Knicks in a playoff game. That was near the end of the his rookie season, after which he went on to play in Chicago until the 1999-2000 season. Kukoc officially retired from professional basketball in 2006, but he was back on the court this past week hosting and coaching a camp at the Bulls/Sox Academy in Lisle. He took time from working with camp participants to speak with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about the camp, his retirement, his native Croatia’s involvement in the World Cup, and his famous last-second shot. Rossi: What has kept you busy in retirement? Kukoc: Not much. Play a

little golf and watching basketball. That’s pretty much it. Life is perfect. I became like a golf addict, so as long as the weather is nice I can go and golf. Rossi: What are your thoughts on the camp? Kukoc: It’s a fun time for the kids. We’re trying to work on fundamentals of the game and teaching them to play the right way and have fun while doing it. Rossi: What’s the biggest fundamental you try and get across to the kids? Kukoc: There’s a theme [to

the camp] and it’s listening. Just listening to the coaches and trying to put all that we say back onto the court. It’s easy to forget after five minutes what the coach said and just do it the easy way or do it your own way, but we’re trying to get them to listen to the little details we put in their ears and get them to put it back on the court. Rossi: What was it like playing for the Bulls when they were at their peak? Kukoc: I don’t want to say it was easy; it was hard, but at the same time it was a lot of fun just for the fact that the expectations were high and the ultimate goal of winning a championship was the only goal. Everything else was a failure. It was a high standard, but it wasn’t something where the goal was put so high that it wasn’t reachable. So we came to the first day of camp with the idea that if we played together and put our minds in the same place that our goal was achievable,

and it was, three times. Rossi: What do you miss most about playing? Kukoc: The competitive nature of it that we all had. In golf, the U.S. Open or the World Cup in soccer, you see how much the guys want it, how much they grind for it, how much the fans are into it and that’s when that competitive spirit of mine shows up and boils inside of me again. Then reality hits you, and when I try to overdo it, the body says ‘No, I don’t really think so.’ It brings you back to Earth, but that’s the part you miss the most. The games you won by 20 or 30 you don’t remember, but those last-second shots or the last-second defensive stops, those are the ones you remember and the ones people remind you about. Rossi: Is that last-second shot against the Knicks your career highlight? Or is there something else you think back on? Kukoc: I hit more than a couple [shots like that], but

I’d say championships are more the measurement of your success as a basketball player. So all the championships, with all the stuff I did in Europe at first and then in the United States, are kind of the highlights. The individual stuff is always there, but it doesn’t mean as much if nothing happens team-wise. The shots you hit are great, but championships are what measures somebody’s success. Rossi: Have you been watching much of the World Cup? Kukoc: I’ve watched a lot of it. I watched Croatia, that’s my team. I watched the United States because that’s my team, too. Obviously I’m happy the States advanced and a little disappointed Croatia didn’t. Rossi: Do you ever get together with your former teammates and play some basketball? Kukoc: No, but every once in a while we play golf and we enjoy the competitive nature that way.
