ELMHURST – Inspired by artists like Led Zeppelin, Joan Jett and Metallica, local rock band Bloody Mary’s music could probably be compared to the spicy, adult beverage often served before noon. But the members say it refers only to the famed ghost. “The drink sounds gross,” said Ana Juvan, the band’s lead guitarist. After all, she wouldn’t know for sure. Not one of them is old enough to drink alcohol. Ana “Apollo” Juvan and drummer Kat “Cannons” Gannon are the oldest of the group at 17. Lead singer and guitarist Rickee “Divine” Bell is 16 and the newest addition to the band, bassist Hollie “Wood” Albin, is just 14. Not only are they all young, but they’re young women in an industry they see dominated by men. “I feel like the majority of people listen to boy bands with boy singers instead of girls,” Bell said. mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Several dozen community members gathered at Elmhurst City Hall on Tuesday, colorful markers in hand, to illustrate their visions for the North York Plan. “[Tuesday’s] meeting is a little bit different,” said Dan Gardner of Houseal Lavigne and Associates. Instead of a presentation or traditional public comment opportunities, Gardner divided Elmhurst community members into six groups. Each group was supplied a poster map of the North York Corridor from North Avenue to Grand Avenue, colored markers and a workshop packet with space for taking notes on five suggested topics. Suggestions included land use and development, transportation and mobility, infrastructure and utilities, environmental features and open spaces, and corridor character and urban design. Each group spent the next hour discussing and illustrating their own vision for the area.

Many residents shared a desire for streetscaping and pedestrian-friendly sidewalks that extend from downtown Elmhurst through the north side. “Public transportation is limited up here,” resident Jim Tansor said. Another group suggested a trolley that runs from the Metra station in downtown Elmhurst up York Street to Grand Avenue. “You’ve got to have a parking garage,” said Susan Rose, an Elmhurst resident and Zoning and Planing commissioner. Rose’s group was the only to suggest adding parking, but Prochaska added that a garage could be just one or two stories to make the area more accessible as it’s redeveloped. Prochaska said his group envisioned a “Rosemont Junior” with restaurants and a performing arts center in place of the Waverton Hotel. “Even though a lot of people had the same ideas, that’s part of this process,” Gardner said. Houseal Lavigne plans to summarize all of the comments and post them on the project website. The company will then get to work developing a draft plan, but Gardner did not have a timeline for when it will be ready.

plan goals applied to students as a whole. One goal is for instructional teams to assess curriculum and instructional strategies using student learning data. Churchville also set broad goals for professionals, learners and the school community. Fischer, on the other hand, set goals aimed at meeting the needs of certain subgroups such as narrowing achievement gaps on the ISAT for Hispanic and low-income students and those with limited English proficiency by 10 percent compared to their peers at each grade level. Board member Karen Stufen asked how the Rising Star plans, school improvement plans and key district performance indicators are related. They are separate plans, but all relate to goal-setting. Johns suggested reviewing the plans and indicating which DPIs are also addressed through the Rising Star program this spring.

ELMHURST – District 205 as a whole and three individual schools are using an Illinois State Board of Education program to set and achieve goals after failing to make adequate yearly progress. York High School, Churchville Middle School, Conrad Fischer Elementary and the district are following Rising Star procedures. “The state, at this point, would like to have all of [the schools] regardless of whether or not they’re required,” Charles Johns, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, said at a recent Board of Education meeting. Johns explained that, as a result of No Child Left Behind standings and recently revised Illinois State Board of Education procedures, three schools and the district have not made AYP. He anticipates within two years all District 205 schools

will participate as the AYP standards set by NCLB will increase. “It is an extremely high amount of work and labor that goes into completing these Rising Star plans,” Johns said. One positive Johns mentioned about the program, which he described as “rigorous,” is that it takes a project management approach which isn’t often seen in education. Teams meet to evaluate what progress has been made on goals set the year before. All schools in the district also create individual school improvement plans. Leadership teams at each school set goals based on their population’s unique needs. “In some cases the principals and their teams dialed in on a very small target for an area of improvement at maybe a very high-performing school,” Johns said. “Other schools took broader or widely encompassing targets or goals.” York’s school improvement

Storm sewer connection proposal heads to Elmhurst City Council By MARI GRIGALIUNAS

mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – The Public Works and Buildings Committee decided on a new residential rear-yard drain program that the Elmhurst City Council could vote on Monday. The new program – if approved – applies to all connections to the city storm sewer, not just connections participating in the cost-sharing program. In order to obtain a city permit to connect sump pumps, downspouts or yard drains to the city storm system, homeowners will have to meet criteria created by city staff and the committee. “By us putting this framework in place, we’re going to have the ability to look at every one of these projects ... and we may be able to help a resident see something that they’ve never even considered,” said committee Chairman and 6th Ward Alderman

When a homeowner applies for a permit to connect to the city’s storm sewer, staff would evaluate each case based on a series of conditions. Sump pumps could connect, for instance, if the pump’s discharge creates slippery ice or algae on a public right of way and the pump cannot be redirected. “As much as I want to say I don’t ever want anybody to connect into the system directly again, I’m coming around to the point ... that’s not feasi-

ble,” 1st Ward Alderman Diane Gutenkauf said. Committee members decided to differentiate between the reasons residents want to connect to the city’s storm sewer. Those with problems affecting public safety or flooding that threatens an entrance to their home or a neighbor’s home would qualify for the cost-sharing program. “Quality of life, yeah, I want to help you with it, but not to the same degree I want to help a safety or a flooding issue,” 5th Ward Alderman Chris Healy said. Assuming homeowners meet all criteria, the city would reimburse them 50 percent of the cost to make connections up to $1,000. Those with quality of life issues such as wet spots in the yard can also participate in the cost-sharing program, but would qualify for a 50 percent reimbursement up to $500. In

He explained this could be just one of the reasons Plus Closets is seeing increased business. He also believes people like being organized. The company designs and manufactures custom storage systems for closets, pantries and garages. “Making this investment in machines does a bunch of things,” Alfano said. Alfano thinks Happ considered both the benefits to customers as well as his employees before investing in new computerized wood-working machines manufactured in Austria by Felder Group USA. “It makes things a little quicker,” Alfano said. “It makes the shop worker’s job much safer, much easier.” While Alfano said the shop always used safe equipment, the new machines have made improvements to increase safety for operators. Special suction machines that reduce

sawdust are just an example of the cleaner environment at Plus Closets. “Efficiency is very important because it affects the bottom line,” Alfano said. The new machinery, he explained, allows Plus Closets to fill orders quickly. The company can complete and ship a project in 10 business days. The machines don’t just improve efficiency, but Alfano explained updated technology also makes these new machines more accurate than previous ones. “It makes a quality product,” Alfano said. The $1 million investment also keeps overhead costs low and allows Plus Closets to keep costs down for homeowners. “It just improves everything all the way around,” Alfano said. Learning tough lessons from Sandy Hook It’s been more than a year since the horrific events in Newtown, Conn. In addition to the brutality and loss of life, which still weigh heavily, the confounding truth is that Sandy Hook Elementary School was doing many things right when it came to protecting its students and staff. What have we learned since then and what changes have we made to better protect ourselves? These are questions the Elmhurst District 205 Safety Committee has been studying for the past 12 months. Understanding that there is no such thing as total security, the committee set about making improvements it felt COMMUNITY would have maximum impact VOICE as quickly as possible. First Melea and foremost, it established Smith districtwide procedures for building entry, which were more consistent and aggressive than previous practices. Upgrades were made to the video surveillance camera systems at the front doors at some schools in District 205 (more are planned). And, over the summer of 2013, new entrances were built in as many schools as building design would permit, creating safety vestibules that provide a “double locking” door system. Also added over the winter break were “panic buttons” in the schools’ main offices, so that – should it not be possible for a 911 phone call to be made during an emergency – staff can summon police at the push of a button. In addition, the committee created emergency flip charts for classrooms that are specific to each school and level (elementary, middle and high school) and spell out for staff the steps to follow in a variety of critical situations. Working with the Elmhurst police and fire departments, key administrators participated in a “table top” exercise last February to practice emergency protocols. And a threat assessment scenario was developed at York High School, which is a structured set of strategies or pathways to determine the credibility and seriousness of a threat. As part of the District 205 Technology Plan, security cameras at York will be upgraded to high definition, and additional cameras added to cover a wider portion of the campus. New active shooter drills are now required annually by Illinois law. And District 205 continues to partner with the Elmhurst Police Department to provide two full-time School Resource Officers working in the schools. The District is also currently applying for a School Security Grant through the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and looking to establish an anonymous tip line for middle and high school students in the near future.

A lot of steps still need to take place before a proposal for a six-story parking deck on Addison Avenue becomes a reality, and nothing is certain yet. What we can be thankful for is that so many residents and business owners came out to speak on the subject that it required three public meetings on the topic. It may not be possible to please everyone, but at least proponents and opponents of the plan have been heard. When you drive past the former Dominick’s on Route 83 in Elmhurst, you can see a sign with a Whole Foods logo and the words “Coming Soon.” Soon is a relative term here, since the company intends to spend the next year remodeling the store, but it’s nice, regardless, to have that physical confirmation that there’ll be a grocery store there again.

ELMHURST – Facebook Co-Founder Chris Hughes will present “Brave New Media World” at Elmhurst College in March. After developing Facebook with his Harvard roommates, Hughes was director of online organizing for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. He helped Obama raise more than $500 million from more than 2 million donations, according to a Elmhurst College news release. In 2012, Hughes bought The New Republic magazine with the intent to transition the publication into the digital age, the release said. They need a program that makes the most of their time. Courses that are directly applicable to the career, and partnerships with students who take their college experience seriously, and have similar goals. With that in mind, Northwood University’s DuPage campus in Glen Ellyn location offers an Adult Degree Program, which gives students the opportunity to pursue their education while maintaining the flexibility they need to balance family, work and school. “Northwood offers evening, weekend or online formats, as well as innovative options like our ‘3+1’ degree program, which allows students the opportunity to complete three years of coursework at partnership institutions

like College of DuPage and Harper College, before completing their final year at Northwood University,” said Ann Marie Rosen, regional development manager. The Northwood University student generally arrives with prior college credits from another university or community college. Many have been out of college for a while or took a break to focus on their career and family. They also have some students who are just beginning their university education. The Glen Ellyn Adult Degree Program Center offers a variety of degrees in both hybrid (a blend of face-to-face and online) and completely online formats. Classes are designed in partnership with industry specialists and advisory boards and are taught by experts who are active in the business world. Along with its Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Management and Marketing, the Glen Ellyn campus also offers

seven fully online degree programs including aftermarket management, automotive marketing management, health care management, marketing, entrepreneurship, management and finance as well as an online Masters of Science in Organizational Leadership. Health Department trains police on heroin reversal drug By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Fine mists of water sprayed the air Friday at the DuPage County Health Department during a training session for area police officers, in an effort to ensure 2013’s record number of heroin overdose deaths isn’t repeated. The lesson was part of the department’s DuPage Narcan Program, which puts the non-addictive drug Naloxone, or Narcan, in the hands of local police, allowing them to reverse the effects of an opiate overdose. With a rising number of DuPage County heroin-related deaths in recent years, including 46 in 2013, the drug could be a valuable tool, said Health Department Executive Director Karen Ayala. “These numbers are not nameless, nor are they faceless,” she said. “Each one represents a life lost.” Police are often the first responders to the scene of a drug overdose, sometimes be-

Ayala said there haven’t yet been any cases where Narcan has been used by trainees. She said the department’s $40,000 investment has sufficiently funded the program, including the $16 individual doses of Narcan, through its most recent training session. The department was looking for partners in the medical community to continue it. This represents one of many county government actions to address what officials call a growing epidemic, including the $100,000 education initiative Be a Hero in DuPage. It is also the first county-wide application of a 2010 state law allowing nonmedical personnel to be trained to use the drug, Ayala said. Jorgensen said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin is working on language for a bill clarifying that trained responders using Narcan can’t be held liable in a civil case. Villa Park Police Chief and member of the DuPage Chiefs of Police Association Robert Pavelchik said the association already had a subcommittee devoted to the topic, but thought more needed to be done.

By keeping people alive, he said, it keeps the chance for recovery alive. “One of the people that we work with says that ‘Dying of an overdose is not the first step for recovery or treatment,’ ” Jorgensen said. “You have to understand that this is a medical disease, this is an addiction, this is a serious medical problem and we all know people who have either died of drug or alcohol problems and also recovered from drug or alcohol problems. These people are not lost to society.”

Get a homestyle meal at Bulldog Ale House CAROL STREAM – Sometimes you just want a homestyle meal, a plethora of beer options, and a classy atmosphere to possibly take in a game. Bulldog Ale House takes the concept of a neighborhood sports pub and combines it with a full-service dining room. The bar area is partitioned off from the diners, meaning you can feel free to bring your family for dinner and not have to fret about any sports fans’ exuberance spoiling your meal. On a recent visit, I opted for one of the few seats not in direct view of a TV, primarily because it was a slow night in the sporting world. That was a good thing, because it allowed me to focus on the food. My companion, not much of a sports fan, was indifferent to the televised display, but had a great time regardless. Located in the Fountains at Town Center subdivision just off Lies Road in Carol Stream, Bulldog Ale House could, at first glance, be mistaken for a local version of an Applebee’s, but that’s not true at all. There’s nothing kitschy about Bulldog, just a clean, nicely decorated and well-maintained eatery with a focus on food and beer. Wanting to get a sense of what’s offered, we started out with the “super grande platter” of mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, chicken tenders and warm pretzels. As mozzarella sticks were apparently in short supply that night, my dining companion was delighted at the chance to substitute mini corn dogs instead. Served with a variety of dipping sauces, it could easily serve as a meal for two all on its own. We ordered entrees nonetheless, knowing we’d end up taking most of the meal home for leftovers – you can’t very well review a restaurant off a single appetizer. I selected the beef Stroganoff, a childhood favorite of mine that can be excellent when made well and terrible when not. In this case,

The pot roast is cooked in a red ale gravy with carrots, red onions and celery, and served with garlic mashed potatoes. Not usually a fan of cooked carrots, my companion enjoyed every morsel, proclaiming the various flavors complemented each other perfectly. Bulldog Ale House offers 32 beers on draft and 22 in bottles at the Carol Stream

the standard varieties you’d expect at any bar, and some more esoteric brands, such as Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse, Half Acre Daisy Cutter and Shock Top Belgian White. If you enjoy a draft brew, there’s probably something here for you. As you might’ve guessed, we didn’t have room for dessert, but would’ve been interested in the giant chocolate chip cookie (topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate syrup) or

CICERO – After being one of the most consistent teams in the state for much of the season, York’s boys basketball team has hit its first slump of the season. The Dukes enter the postseason on a three-game losing streak after beginning the year 23-2. To be fair, the opponents in those three games represent three of the toughest games on the schedule. York lost in road games against Hinsdale Central, Oak Park-River Forest and Morton. All three of those teams are favorites to win regionals, but the first two of those losses cost the Dukes the West Suburban Silver title. “You go through this stuff in a season,” York coach Vince Doran said. “It’s unfortunate to have it now. I love our kids. I think our kids are going to bounce back. I believe in them. We’re going to go to Addison [to start the playoffs] and be ready to play whoever we face.” York lost to OPRF 54-50 last Friday when a win would have given the Dukes a share of the West Suburban Silver title with Hinsdale Central. Despite beginning the conference season 10-0, York was unable to win the league. Looking to rebound, the Dukes headed to Morton for the final regular season game in a West Suburban Conference crossover Wednesday. The Mustangs made 14 3-pointers and blew away the Dukes 81-57. “They’re one of the hottest teams around right now,” Doran said. “They proved that [Wednesday]. They just shot the heck out of the ball early and we couldn’t string any stops together. We couldn’t guard them. Hopefully this is one of the best things that could possibly happen to us. It certainly not only humbles you, but you realize that you need to hunker down and get stops. We were able to do that in the early in the year.”

‘It’s a dream come true’

IC Catholic girls basketball books first trip to state finals By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com RIVER FOREST – It’s been a good year for girls sports at IC Catholic. On the heels of the girls volleyball team’s Class 2A state title in the fall, the girls basketball team earned its first trip to state by defeating Seton Academy 40-38 in a 2A supersectional at Concordia University Monday night. The Knights (25-6) led the entire game and held off the Sting (19-9) down the stretch. IC led 26-15 at halftime, but the Sting gradually got back into the game. Following Seton’s potential tying 3-pointer in the final minute, Grace Vitek made two clutch free throws to extend the lead. After Alfatinee Boyd drained a three with 7.3 seconds left the Knights were able to play keep away and kill the clock without being fouled. “This has been our goal all season,” Vitek said. “Me, Abby [Radoha] and Rory [Manion] have played together since freshman year and we’ve been dreaming of getting to state so

Vitek and Manion scored 10 points each. Radoha finished with eight points. Manion was a key player for the girls volleyball team and now gets to go back to state for the second time this school year. She will return to the site of the volleyball championship, Redbird Arena. “Getting to state is amazing,” Manion said. “It’s something that my sisters haven’t done in their high school careers for either sport so getting it for both sports in my senior year is just absolutely indescribable and awesome.” Vitek is a 5-foot-11 guard that presents match up problems for opponents thanks to her all-around game and length. Manion is a physical

6-foot forward that leads the team with 9.4 rebounds per game. “Grace and I are partners, basically,” Manion said. “We’re always running the pick and roll. We’re always working as a team.” In the state semifinal, the Knights will take on Prophetstown, which is about 40 miles northeast of Moline. Prophetstown has won more than 20 games in 14 of the past 16 season, but this is their first state appearance The Lady Prophets enter with a 30-2 record and have a 23-game winning streak dating back to a Dec. 11 loss. Meanwhile, IC has rattled off 16 wins in a row since falling to York on Jan. 3. Montini owns state wrestling medal stand CHAMPAIGN – It’s safe to say Montini’s wrestling team had an impressive showing at the individual state tournament last weekend. Five Broncos won state titles and six more earned medals as Montini was well represented on the medal stand. Dylan Duncan (120 pounds), Kegan Calkins (126), Vince Turk (138), Chris Garcia (145) and Xavier Montalvo (170) added their names to a growing list of Montini state champions. Garcia and Montalvo won their second consecutive state titles and Garcia finished his career as a four-time medalist. “This is the best feeling I’ve ever had in my life,” said Calkins, a transfer from Wheaton North. “I worked so hard for this one moment and to be the best.”

son (285). Jimmy Pawelski was fourth at 106 and Derrick Curry picked up a fifth place medal at 182. Johnson transferred to Montini from Wyoming Seminary in Pennsylvania. The Downers Grove resident missed out on a chance to win his first Illinois state title, but has one more shot next year as a senior. “The consolation is I’m a junior,” Johnson said. “One match doesn’t define my season. I’ve had some great experiences throughout the year: Ironman, The Clash, Cheesehead, and so you have to look at the season as a whole. It’s kind of a crummy ending to it, but I’ve got another season ahead of me and college after that, so I have to learn what I can from that sort of match and just

move on.” Johnson felt like he could have wrestled better at state, but was still positive on the entire experience. “You can’t be down on it. I got to the finals,” Johnson said. “It was a great tournament and a great experience. The Grand March, there’s nothing like it. There’s nothing like this atmosphere. It’s just a great experience.” The Broncos’ season still lives on in the team dual tournament. Montini defeated Westinghouse 60-12 in a sectional final Tuesday and will face Washington in a state quarterfinal at 9 a.m. Saturday in Bloomington’s U.S. Cellular Coliseum. The state championship dual will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Glenbard East senior wrestler Carlos Fuentez earned his first state medal by taking third at 106 pounds at the state tournament over the weekend. He was one of two Rams to earn all-state honors, along with teammate Dayton Olson, and recovered from a quarterfinal defeat to win four matches in the wrestlebacks to claim his medal. Fuentez, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, talked with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi in Champaign after he picked up his medal.

I just focused on winning one match at a time, just focusing on that next match ahead of me.

What did you do well at state?

What was key to the third place match against Glenbard North’s Kirk Johansen? I wrestled him at sectionals in the quarterfinals. I don’t think [having wrestled him before] made a big difference. I wrestled him in IKWF [Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation] when we were in eighth grade, so I knew what he was going to do and he knew what I was going to do, so it was good.

Do you have any plans for college yet? I’m not sure yet [where I’m going], but I’m definitely going to wrestle in college.

That slump doesn’t mean they should be overlooked. AT has quality wins over Morton, Hinsdale South and Stagg. All three of those wins came at home. Guard play has been key for the Blazers. Senior point guard James Pupillo is a very good ballhandler that is capable of big scoring nights. Fellow senior guards Ronald Duling and Joe Kurucar are also key to the team. First opponent North Lawndale Charter went 4-6 in the Public League Red West, the same division as powerhouses Whitney Young and Orr. Senior guard Jaron Hall gives the Rams a quality scoring guard, but the rest of the team is very young and inexperienced. Young players like freshman Mike Finley and sophomore Patrick Peterkin have shown flashes of their potential, but will have to put it together if the Rams are to make a playoff run.
