In 2015 there will be increased race weekends at Iowa Speedway; the number of sculptures and public art throughout the community continues to grow; our downtown was recently listed onto the National List of Historic Places, along with Maytag Park, the Jasper County Courthouse and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church; and of course, who can forget about Newton being the home of Maytag Dairy Farms and their famous Maytag Blue Cheese. Newton is certainly a destination location. Check out the many attractions Newton has to offer; and as you review this visitor guide, you’ll also learn about some of the other wonderful amenities and organizations here as well. Located on I-80, just thirty minutes from Des Moines and I-35 in Central Iowa, Newton has an abundance of local treasures. As a guest to the area, you will find a wide variety of places and things to experience. Newton truly offers something for every interest during any of the Iowa seasons. We want to help you build your dream home. The Newton City Council recently renewed the Newton New Home Buyer incentive for 2015, which provides $10,000 cash to purchasers of a new home in Newton valued at $160,000 or greater, in addition to the land value. The cash incentive is available immediately upon the transfer of title to the buyer, and may be used for down payment, closing costs, or any other item even unrelated to the home. For Builders of new speculative homes in Newton, the City is offering an incentive package that includes “no-fee” Building Permits and Inspections, and reimbursement of all interest on construction loans from issuance of the building permit through the sale of the new home or 12 months, whichever first occurs. The Newton CVB keeps up with the marketing trends of the tourism industry to increase the visibility of the Newton community throughout the State of Iowa and nationally. Newton Main Street and The Main Street Approach® was developed by the National Main Street Center, Inc. with the goal of economic development within the context of historic preservation. The four points of economic restructuring, design, organization and promotion; along with their eight guiding principles of incremental process, comprehensive four-point approach, quality, public and private partnerships, changing attitudes, its focus on existing assets, self-help program and being implementation oriented, are all integrated to create a positive, identifiable image for downtown districts. The mission of the Newton Main Street organization is to preserve the history, invest in the future and to develop pride in our downtown district through community involvement, volunteerism and private-public partnerships within the Main Street district - the heart of Newton. Their goal is to establish a strong and well-known Main Street program that utilizes a growing number of participants in the implementation and funding of the program in order to establish downtown Newton’s image as a place for residents and visitors to come for business and events. They also encourage the improvement of downtown Newton’s physical appearance and to strengthen and broaden the economic base of downtown Newton. NDC is proud to have established the Newton Business Park with lots still available for development. Another sample of NDC’s commitment to businesses is the availability of funds through the Revolving Loan Fund Program (IRP) to help start-ups, expansions and/or retentions of jobs in the Newton area by providing “gap” financing. Since 1997 NDC has loaned out over 1 million dollars. Just southwest of Newton is the largest prairie reconstruction project in the United States. Set among rolling hills of prairie grasses and flowers are more than 5,000 acres of protected prairie and oak savanna habitats. Look for buffalo and elk along the auto-tour route. Experience several miles of trails and the Prairie Learning Center with its state-of-the-art audiovisual programs, underground prairie rootscape and interpretive displays.
Maytag Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It contains the locally-favorite Fred Maytag Bowl which houses entertainment throughout the summer months. There are several shelters, the hike/bike trails, a disc golf course, playground, tennis court, sculptures and much more to see and do. Fred Maytag Pool can be found nestled in the center of historic Maytag Park. Since the pool was built in 1935, it has served as one of the main summertime family attractions in Newton. Today the pool features zero entry access, a chair lift, water fountains, two water slides, a diving well, and six 25 meter swimming lanes.

Shaw Media has the 3rd longest family-owned newspaper company in the country. The building houses the Newton Daily News and Jasper County Advertiser. The building is Classic-Style design and contains the original vault, and you can see the Goss Press from the 1960’s that’s still in use today. You can’t miss the News Printing Company with the Carl Homstad mural painted on the east side of the building as an extra attraction.

Sample Trip Itinerary
Friday
The following is a trip itinerary for all ages, walks of life and tastes. This itinerary can be for a ‘staycation’ for those living in the region, or for the individual traveler or motorcoach group. For full affect, this particular trip would be best if done during the spring/summer months.
Newton and the surrounding area has a treasure trove of attractions and activities right here and several at no cost or a small admission fee. Here is a weekend’s worth of fun ideas for one of the first few weekends of the season.
Let’s begin your trip in the middle of the afternoon. First stop is Maytag Dairy Farms, home of the famous Maytag Blue Cheese, where you can take a tour; watch them hand wrap every wedge of blue cheese and be sure to ask to see the video of how they make their Maytag Blue Cheese. Remember to sample all the different cheeses at their retail counter. Next head to the Jasper County Courthouse. Now most of you only go to a courthouse for personal business, but our courthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places. It has also celebrated its 100th –Year Anniversary and has been newly renovated. The courthouse is a favorite of our motorcoach groups that visit Newton and there is no charge for touring.

Next, enjoy dinner at one of our many family-friendly restaurants, before heading to the Valle Drive-In Threatre; only one of four left in the State of Iowa. Once the show is over, there is still time in the evening to go out for ice cream, frozen custard or frozen yogurt. If your timing is right, maybe you could attend one of the Thunder Nites in Newton motorcycle rallies in downtown Newton; all are family-friendly events. It’s time to head to one of our local area hotels (remember to make your reservations ahead of time!) for family swimming and a fun overnight; or if you’re a camper, how about the Newton KOA campground on the south side of town; or one of the nearby state parks.
Enjoy your complimentary breakfast at the hotel or your campground breakfast and then head on out to the Jasper County Historical Museum for a lesson on Newton history. The cost is only $5/person, and will only take a couple of hours to tour; and once you’re finished, maybe take in a walk, bike or drive through town on the sculpture tour. Explore this eclectic collection of more than 90 (yes, 90!) installations of artwork that includes sculpture, bas relief and painted murals and will also educate you and your family or group on the spectacular art that appeals to every style and sensibility (maps are available at the Newton Convention & Visitors Bureau in our new Visitor Center). Well now you’ve probably worked up an appetite after all that walking, so a quick refueling at one of the fast-food restaurants in town will get you jumpstarted again. After a quick lunch, take a short drive over to Colfax and visit Trainland USA. It’s the original operating toy train museum in Iowa. Next stop is Prairie City to visit the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge and Prairie Learning Center with fascinating exhibits for all ages and a place to begin your visit. I bet you’re hungry after Trainland and the Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge. Explore one of the restaurants in Prairie City or Colfax, or drive back to Newton for a quick dinner. After your busy afternoon, go back to your hotel or campground for more swimming and family activities, or rest up before going out for a movie at the Capitol II Theatre or before roasting those marshmallows by the fire.

First, another complimentary breakfast at the hotel or a campground breakfast. If you’re a racing fan, you might pick one of the weekends to attend a race at the NASCAR-owned Iowa Speedway. Don’t forget to purchase your tickets ahead of time! If racing isn’t something you’re interested in, fill your cultural appetite by visiting the Iowa Sculpture Festival this year; or head over to Lynnville to visit the Wagaman Mill and Museum. Even better, check out all of them! By the time Sunday evening rolls around, you will have had a very fun-packed weekend in Newton.

Skiff Medical Center is a standalone, not-for-profit organization. It is owned by the City of Newton. The medical center is governed by a five-member Board of Trustees elected to fouryear overlapping terms by Newton voters. Skiff is bucking the trend of diminished health care in rural America by enhancing the quantity and quality of its services during the last two decades. Jasper County was organized in 1846 and named after Sergeant William Jasper, a Revolutionary War hero. Located 35 miles east of Des Moines, it is the 18th most populous county of Iowa’s 99 total counties, based on information from the 2010 census. The county seat is Newton. As such, Newton is the home of the Jasper County Courthouse, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In celebration of its 100 Year Anniversary in 2011, the Jasper County Courthouse underwent an extensive renovation, restoring it as a focal point of the downtown Newton area. The Neo-classic building with stained glass dome, hand-painted murals, fresco design and ceramic tiles laid in Mosaic patterns has been restored to the “near-period”
