10,000 Crestonians ‘Salute to freedom’ By SARAH BROWN

The 10,000 Crestonians 64th annual Fourth of July holiday events offers a full weekend of free, familyfriendly activities to commemorate Independence Day. The theme this year is “Salute to Freedom” and honors the men and woman who have served and currently serve the United States through military service.
Salute to Freedom The weekend begins with a veterans breakfast 7 to 8:30 a.m. July 3 at the congregate mealsite at Creston’s Restored Depot. This event welcomes veterans and their spouse as a way to thank area veterans for their service and sacrifice. As a way to honor the country and take part in a patriotic tradition, a new feature of this year’s festivities is a flag retirement ceremony 5:30 p.m. July 4 at McKinley Park band shell. Troop leader Joe Anson said the scouts have performed the ceremony at their cabin, but felt it was something they should share with the community. The ceremony will be read by Boy Scout Troop

New event Another new event added is the Creston Half Marathon and 5K run/walk 6 p.m. July 3. Organizer Mindy Stalker said the half marathon route goes past areas hit by Creston’s 2012 tornado and it’s encouraging to see how the area has recovered. Sign up at www.crestonhalfmarathon.com
Uptown events Aside from fireworks in the park, one of Creston’s most popular events is the Fourth of July Parade at 10 a.m. July 4. For people who have arrived early to stake out a seat, Creston’s Restored Depot will open at 9 a.m. July 4. Inside the depot, Friends of the Library will host a Scholastic book fair for toddlers through young adults. Additionally, Creston Model Rail Roaders will be operating their miniature version of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway and Creston:Arts gallery will be

A bit of history “The caboose is back,” said Ellen Gerharz, executive director of Creston Chamber of Commerce. Arlan Biere, boardmember of Union County Historical Society, said the Gerharz caboose is the oldest of its kind in existence and has under gone more than a year of restoration and repairs. Biere said the caboose will be open 8 a.m. until noon July 4 on Adams Street. At noon, the Union County Historical Complex in McKinley Park will feature reenactments of Creston life from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Demonstrations include letter press print making at Petznick’s and baking bread and churning handmade butter with Jane Briley.
Biere said live pump organ music, baby chicks, corn shelling and a buggy wheel jacking can also be found in the park in the afternoon. Hungry? Old Tyme Power will be churning out ice cream in McKinley Park with the help of a vintage tractor motor from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 4. Barbecue will also be served in the park from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. by Crest Baptist Church groups Celebrate Recovery and Believe Guatemala.

Back by popular demand, a skate board competition will be held 4 p.m. July 4 at Creston’s skate park in McKinley Park. This free event features categories for beginner, intermediate and advanced skateboarders. Gerharz confirmed the carnival at McKinley Park will not be returning this Fourth of July. “They went out of business,” Gerharz said. Other activities in McKinley Park include a classic an-
tique tractor pull from noon to dusk, Lion’s Club Bingo from noon to 9 p.m., Cub Scout mobile pedal carts from 2 to 4 p.m., talent show at 6:30 p.m. and fireworks at 9:30 p.m. over McKinley Lake. “It’s going to be a great opportunity to show off the community,” Gerharz said. “Hopefully the weather holds and everyone has a great time.” For more information and a schedule of events, see page 3 in this special section or visit www.crestoniowachamber. com

Jon Carroll first started entertaining parade-goers in 1977 when he debuted with Creston Elks Clowns pedaling a 6-foot high Schwinn unicycle in parades all across southwest Iowa. He was 18 years old and his striped Carroll clown suit and unicycle mastery astonished young children who would swarm the streets to catch a glimpse of Carroll and the Clown’s signature doublecab truck. “He was a hit from the very beginning,” said Bill Fastenow, an original Clowns member. “Jon would ride that thing and kids would follow him clear down the street. We’ve had a lot of Clowns over the years, but Jon might be the only one with any real talent.” The late 1970s and 1980s
were the peak of Creston Elks Clowns with about 20 active members. The contingent traveled to eight or 10 events each year and the parade routes averaged about 1 mile each. “We had more fun than you could shake a stick at,” said Chuck Lang of Creston, another original Elks Clowns member. “The kids went crazy for Jon, especially when we went out of town because they’d never seen him before.”
The $5 incentive But, the burning question is how did Carroll learn to ride this one-wheel vehicle? “Dad came home with a unicycle one day that he bought from Montgomery Ward and told us the first one to ride this gets $5,” Carroll recalls. “He had 10 children. He had to keep us busy somehow.” So, the Carroll children started practicing. They started in the upstairs hallway of their house on South Pine Street in Creston. “The hallway was about 20 foot long,” Carroll said, “and narrow enough you could extend your hands
and use the wall to help you when you crashed.” They then “graduated” outside riding the unicycle in the street using parked vehicles for balance and to brace their falls. Jon — at 12 years old — was the first child to successfully ride the unicycle. “I don’t ever remember getting $5, though,” Carroll said, laughing. His brother Mike and sisters Tina and Lisa also learned to ride “a block or two” on the unicycle, which had a 24-inch wheel and sat about 3-foot high off the ground. riding it to school occasionally through the ninth grade. “I rode it to school a couple times in the winter. That was interesting. Unicycles don’t do so well on ice,” Carroll joked.

On Christmas in 1977, Carroll received a brand new 6-foot Schwinn giraffe unicycle he still rides in parades today. It was a gift from his girlfriend Roxanne Chubick. “It cost me about $150,” said Roxanne, who will be married to Jon for 34 years in August. “I remember my parents were not very happy with me spending that kind of money on a boyfriend. I was only a 10th grader then. But, he’s put a lot of miles on that thing over the years. I think we got our money out of it.” Jon has had several other unicycles over the years including a 10-foot custom unicycle constructed by Lang. Carroll used the 10-foot unicycle for a couple years in the mid-1980s. “He could change streetlights with that thing,” Fastenow said. Luckily, Carroll said he

never had any major falls or crashes on the 10-footer or any other unicycle over the years — only small crashes that knocked the wind out of him after landing stomachfirst. “I do watch for raised concrete and irregularities in the roadway,” Carroll said. “The brick streets in the Creston routes can give me problems sometimes.” Carroll said the scariest moment, though, was in 2009 when a group of children surrounded him near Creston Automotive on Adams Street. “I dangled a piece of candy above one kid’s head,” Carroll said. “He was jumping for it and when I turned around kids had surrounded the unicycle and I had nowhere to go. RAGBRAI In April, Carroll purchased a new unicycle. Its seat is 4-foot off the ground and supports a 28-inch wheel. Carroll said he will attempt to ride the fourth day of RAGBRAI this year on this new unicycle. That route is about 40 miles long from Forest City
to Mason City. Carroll, 54, will also ride in this year’s Fourth of July parade in Creston slated 10 a.m. July 4. Freedom is the theme of the Creston Shooter’s Fourth of July firework display this year. The show will last about 15 to 20 minutes with aerial and ground displays. The Creston Shooters are a certified group of pyrotechnicians from the Creston area. There are about 12 active members in the club, two of which are junior pyros. “A lot of people think that the fire department does (the fireworks show), but they only do the stand-

Someone has to remain on site all day to monitor the fireworks. “We meet, we get it organized and we are the ones who go out and set it all up,” said Roger Millslagle, vice president of the orga-

nization. The method of operating fireworks has changed over the years. In the past, fireworks were shot by digging and hand-firing. Today, the Shooters have a trailer set up with an electric match. “We have gotten away from doing hand firing just because of the danger involved,” Millslagle said. The show will consist of a variety of almost 700 aerial firework shells, a secret ground display by the junior pyros and, of course, the American flag. “There are so many shells to choose from,” Millslagle said. “We tend to get an assortment box, and if there

“We try to keep shots in the air at all times during the show and try not to have any blank sky,” said Shooter’s secretary Lisa Shawler. The estimated cost for this year’s Fourth of July fireworks show in Creston is $7,000. A junior pyro is a certified shooter under the age of 21. A junior pyro younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and is not allowed on site when the fireworks are shot. An 18 or older junior pyro is allowed to be on site and can set up and load the fireworks but cannot shoot them. “What we try to do with the junior pyros is introduce them to the major things that go into a show, and the idea is to create an element of safety in their backgrounds,” Nurnberg said. Brandon Robertson, 18, of Creston has been a junior pyro for two years. “I have been a firework
enthusiast for the longest time,” Robertson said. “After one Fourth I decided to email the Creston Robertson Shooters and get involved.” Nurnberg is one of the few people who know what the junior pyros have in store for their display. He said that he challenged the junior pyros to remember the Freedom theme, and he thinks it will be impressive. The Shooters do multiple shows during the year besides July 4. They arrange fireworks for the Adams County Speedway, the biker rally in Waukee, weddings and other events. “You never know what we’re gonna do when,” Millslagle said. “We have been approached by different people at different times asking for fireworks.” One of Robertson’s favor-
