Creston FFA Chapter celebrates 2014 National FFA Week, Feb. 15-22 INDIANAPOLIS — The Creston FFA Chapter in Creston, Iowa will celebrate National FFA Week, Feb. 15-22. This year’s theme is Ignite and it embraces more than 80 years of FFA traditions while looking forward to the organization’s future. More than half a million members will participate in National FFA Week activities at local, state and national levels. These members have a passion for agriculture. Designated as National FFA Week in 1947, the week of George Washington’s birthday is FFA Week, and runs from Saturday to Saturday. FFA Week gives FFA members an opportunity to educate the public about agriculture. During the week, chapters conduct a variety of activities to help others in their school and community learn about FFA and agricultural education. Creston FFA will celebrate National FFA Week by participating in the following activities: drive your tractor to school day, agriculture and FFA facts on the announcements, FFA pride day wearing FFA jackets and/or t-shirts. Today’s FFA members are the innovators and leaders of tomorrow. Through agricultural and hands-on learning, they are preparing for more than 300 career opportunities in the food, fiber and natural resources industry. Creston FFA promotes Hunting Safety to Creston Middle School 6th Grade Students Creston FFA partnered with Mrs. Bevins’s 6th grade Language Arts class to write essays regarding hunting safety. Mrs. Bevins worked with the students on the principles of Language Arts and the FFA’s Environmental Issues com-

mittee read the essays. Two student essays were selected as the most creative and thorough in covering the topic of hunting safety. The two award recipients of the essay contest were Brittany Linch and Hunter Fry; each student received a

blaze orange hunting vest as the winning prize. Awards were presented at a special hunting safety program coordinated by the Creston FFA Chapter. Mr. Corey Carlton, an Iowa DNR Officer for our area was the guest speaker, he covered

gun safety and hunting safety rules. Creston FFA is pleased to partner with Mrs. Bevins and Mr. Carlton to help educate our young people of the rules and safety precautions needed for a safe and successful hunting experience.

“IGNITE” marks the 86th National FFA Convention Lane Miller, Jeremy Stoll, Tyler Waddingham, John Gravlin, Darin Hatfield, Chad Lamb, Wyatt Thompson, Zach Hoffman, Taylor Rice, Madison Skarda, Brooke Thelen, and Savannah Hartman know firsthand why “IGNITE” was the theme for the 86th National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. The convention’s theme symbolized the agricultural education organization’s mission to spark the passion and purpose to prepare students for success throughout their lives. More than 60,000 FFA members, advisors, supporters, and guests were in attendance at the annual convention held October 29th thru November 2nd. The Creston FFA Chapter continues to earn national recognition for its outstanding efforts in promoting and working toward the development of its members, chapter, and community by developing individual and cooperative activities that enhanced its members’ life skills; promoting its ability to develop a positive image, and interaction with support groups through cooperative and organized activities; and its developed community partnership in improving economic, environmental and human resources. The chapter stressed the

development of its members, chapter, and community through a wide variety of projects. During the past school year the chapter conducted over 150 activities locally, attended 15 leadership workshops and conventions, participated in over a dozen judging events, and had members compete in contests above the local level. Chapter activities Helping Hands, Make Creston Green, and Christmas holiday activities have been identified as programs assisting in Creston FFA’s success in being recognized as one of Iowa’s top 25 chapters. The chapter’s Helping Hands program provided the opportunity for FFA members to team up with special needs students and assist in their motor and communicative skill development. It’s Christmas holiday activities, including the CHS student body, involved purchasing presents for children, the collection of toys, and canned goods. The canned goods and toys were given to the community pantry for distribution during the holiday season. During the past school year, the chapter conducted a number of safety activities involving hundreds of area youth. Safety programs included its annual Bicycle Safety Program and

rodeo where helmets were provided to participating youth. Hunter, Farm, and Halloween Safety program presentations were also presented. The chapter also assisted with elementary counselors in conducting a “Red Ribbon Week” Drug Safety Awareness program for the school’s elementary students. Members attending were also involved in several national leadership workshops, which provided opportuni-

ties for personal growth and leadership development. Convention participants also had the opportunity to listen to Rick Pintino, head coach for the Louisville and recent National Champions. Mr. Hamilton brought the message of holding yourself to a “One Day Contract”. Members learned from coach Pitino that there is a lot of negativity in the world, we need not pay attention to the negativity but focus on the positive and hold our-

selves accountable for making that positive change in life. Members also had the opportunity to hear Josh Sundquist, a motivational speaker and Paralympic skiing champion. Josh brought the inspiring message that life will knock you down, but we are not judged on how we get knocked down but how fast we get back up. Future education and career exploration also was a key component of the convention. Students attending

Youth involved in three-day bicycle safety program Everyone can fondly remember riding bicycles as a child. However, most people don’t know that every year about 176,000 kids go to the emergency room of a hospital because of bike accidents. Some of these injuries are so serious that children die, usually from head injuries. This is a problem the Creston FFA membership has been addressing for more than a decade. In this time well over 2,000 young people have been taught the importance of bicycle safety and provided with a helmet they can wear when riding their bikes. Creston FFA, working with the Creston Law Enforcement Center and the

Union County Sheriff’s Department, presented their annual two-day bicycle safety program to over 200 first and second grade students in the Creston public and St. Malachy schools on May 13th, 14th, and 17th of 2013. With the help of the Creston police, FFA members explained the importance of wearing safety gear and knowing the correct hand signals when riding a bicycle. Students received a coloring book on bicycle safety and were provided the opportunity to demonstrate how to properly ride a bicycle on a city street, how to use hand signals when turning away or into traffic, and how to approach vari-

Funding for the helmets came from Iowa State Savings Bank, First Federal Savings Bank, First National Bank, Tyler Insurance, Pokorny BP, True Value Hardware, Cornerstone Financial, and DeBruce Grain. The Chapter was assisted in its presentations by local police officer Pat Henry. According to newly elected Chapter President Lane Miller, officer Pat Henry was very important to the overall program’s success. “The law enforcement al-

ways works well with the young people and are very knowledgeable about the bicycle safety laws, adding credibility to our presentation and program,” added newly elected Chapter Vice President Zack Peppmeier another FFA member involved in the safety program. “Safety can save lives if we take it seriously,” stated FFA member Zach Powers. “If we can get one youngster to look before crossing an intersection, our efforts will be worthwhile,” added Jeremy Stoll who was a member of the team which presented the programs to the Creston area youth.

Creston Freshmen get Fired Up for FFA Being a freshman is an exciting time for young people and so too is becoming a new FFA member! New members are termed greenhands in the FFA organization, this level of membership is an exploratory time for our newest members. To start the greenhand members off on the right start, freshman attend the annual district Greenhand Fire Up conference hosted by the Indianola FFA Chapter. The Fire Up conference provides opportunity for members to learn the meaning and purpose of the FFA. They learn that FFA although deeply rooted in production agriculture, has ventured to include a vast array of subjects and career opportunities. As they like to say “We are just about cows, plows, and sows any-

more.” In turn, new FFA members learn to value the work of our forefathers in building a rich culture of land stewardship and also a mentality for progressiveness, always looking for better ways through better days. Learning is key for our new freshman members but having FUN is important. At greenhand conference new members enjoyed time with new friends from other chapters in the district as well as fun with fellow chapter members. From games to challenging activities, the evening was entertaining and enjoyable. The new friends and connections made at the Fire Up conference will serve them well through their time in FFA as well as into their future.

Agriculture in the classroom Many of FFA members’ supervised agricultural experience (SAE) consist of livestock, crops, or working in an agriculturally related field, however one member of the Creston FFA has broadened the scope of the project and has introduced agriculture education as a SAE. Taylor Gibson creates and coordinates agriculture learning opportunities and takes them to the elementary students. “It is important to get young people exposed to agriculture because many of them are not from the farm,” Taylor explains. “I feel it is my responsibility as a FFA member to share what we know about agriculture and teach it to the children, it might just get them excited about studying agriculture and who knows, even have a career in ag.” This past spring in Creston FFA took on a new challenge of a community garden. Part of operating the garden was to start plants from seeds. Very small seeds such as radishes, carrots, turnips, and beets are difficult to sow and hard to get in a straight row. Creston FFA members designed a project to take to the elementary to teach them about seeds and how to make seed tape. Members mixed flour and water and used that as glue to keep the seed secure to the tape. The material used for the tape

was toilet papers. Toilet paper is biodegradable and can be made into long strips. The children placed dots of flour mixture onto the toilet paper and then placed a few seeds on each dot. Member used the seed tape in the garden to plant the small seeds.

Outstanding Scholars

Agriculture in the classroom is important for the tradition of agriculture in the state of Iowa. Creston FFA will continue to develop and conduct activities to help teach our community about the importance of our great agricultural industry.

Scholarship is promoted in the Creston FFA Chapter through academic awards and scholarships. Many of the chapter’s members are very conscience about their grades and work diligently to be the top of their class. The chapter has a history of having its members honored as valedictorian and salutatorians of their graduating class. recognition beyond FFA for their academic achievement. Four of Creston FFA’s members were honored as being selected for the 2013 National Honor Society inductions. Zack Peppemeir, Zaidy Frank, Taylor Rice and Jeremy Stoll earn the NHS honors in 2013. One hundred percent of the Chapter’s 2013 graduates attended a 2 or 4-year college or university following graduation. Securing funds to attend college is a focus

for many of our members. Our chapter awards 3 memorial scholarships at our local banquet and the National FFA provides access to over $1 million dollars worth of scholarships to its members. Zack Powers was awarded with a $2,500 Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) scholarship from the National FFA Organization. Zach was also awarded the local Farm Bureau and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation Scholarships.

FFA members compete in 2013 District Soil Contest Learning to evaluate soils is just one of the many opportunities available to FFA members. Eight Creston FFA members gained valuable experience in developing knowledge in soil evaluation by competing in the South Central District Soils Judging Contest held at Knoxville, where they received a silver emblem award and placed 12th out of 27 teams. Creston FFA soils team received second place at the sub district soils judging event held at Leon in September. Two teams from the Creston FFA competed in this event. The contest involved FFA members taking a general knowledge test and evaluating four soil pits. The evaluations involved soil conservation practices, determining soil texture and surface features, land capability classifications, the evaluation of current and future management practices, and the suitability of the various soils present for non agricultural

Most people think of trees as having values that can’t be expressed in dollars. They think of cool shade on a hot day, beautiful flowers in the spring, great fall color, or other, less tangible benefits. Some of the benefits of trees can be expressed in dollars, however. According to the American Forestry Association, trees have significant monetary benefits. They have found that a single tree that lives for fifty years can provide $57,151.00 in environmental benefits such as reduced costs in air conditioning, heating, erosion control, and air pollution. This is the lesson the Creston FFA members try to instill in every kindergarten student in the Creston school system when each student is provided a free tree seedling of their own to plant. According to Creston FFA Advisor Kelsey Bailey, “It is neat to get pictures showing large evergreen trees from students who received or planted seedlings from our chapter when they were little and now, as high schoolers, are reaping their environmental benefits.” This past year over 100 White Spruce, Red and White Pines were individually packaged in peat moss and distributed to all kindergarten students in the Creston school system.

According to John Gravlin, the FFA judging contests (CDE’s) provide members the opportunity to experience some aspect of agriculture outside of the classroom in a more realistic setting. “Evaluating real live classes of livestock and preparing oral reasons on their placements were really challenging activities,” said Adam Baker, a member of the Creston FFA Livestock Judging team. “It provided me the opportunity to see some of the things someone on a farm deals with in the production of livestock,” added Tyler Waddingham, judging team member. Nineteen Creston FFA Chapter members along with 111 other FFA teams from Iowa and Missouri participated in the 2013 Northwest Missouri State University Career Development Event held in Maryville, Missouri in October. The Career Development Events were designed to provide students an opportunity to display their agricultural knowledge and skills in the area of Livestock, Horse, and Dairy Foods evaluation. The Livestock judging event involved the placing of

Earning to Live……Living to Serve Service, it is a focus of the Creston FFA Chapter. Often times when people think of FFA they envision the FFA members with their individual supervised agriculture experience (SAE), feeding livestock, showing livestock, harvesting, planting, working at an agriculturally related business – any yes, this is the picture of the individual FFA member. However, as a chapter we strive to serve our community and the people of our community. The FFA motto is: “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, and Living to Serve. Learning takes place in the classroom (Learning) through instruction and discovery. Doing, doing is what the members go back home and apply from the classroom their own SAE projects. Earning, members earn money or invest their time in activities that are agriculturally related. This earning requires members to take records of their investments and earnings, teaching financial responsibilities and personal management. Finally, Serving. Serving is the opportunity for members to work together or individually to make the world around us a better place to live. The FFA believes if service is a focus at a young age, then that need and desire to help one another will follow the member throughout adult-

hood. Creston FFA is a model of excellence for serving the community. There have been many service projects conducted throughout the year by the Creston FFA Chapter. We start the beginning of the year off by cleaning a stretch of Highway 25 between Creston and Orient. What seems like a very long stretch of highway is actually a quick task as our members many hands make for light work. This year, following our clean up, members gathered at Cedar Park for some backyard football, chili feed, and bone fire. In the fall, Creston FFA also helps the CARE organization with Bright Eyes in the Park. A group of members is formed to gather straw bales from the Creston Livestock Auction as well as tables from the Eagles and then delivered to McKinley Park to set up for the event. Following the conclusion of the event, members load all the bales and tables and return them to the respective locations. Although this is only a small part of the Bright Eyes celebration, the chapter feels good about their contribution and is happy to help such a worth cause. The Christmas holiday season brings forth a host of service traditions for the Creston FFA Chapter. We start the season by helping deco-

rate the downtown Depot for the annual lighted Christmas parade. In the school, the chapter challenges their peers to take part in helping the community by collecting food donations, gently used toy donations, and adopting families. Our ‘Santa Can’ project partnered with CHS Student Government this season, both groups were thrilled with the turn out. Over 560 pounds of food was collected for the Creston food pantry! Our ‘Santa’s Toybox’ with the help of CHS I-Jag provided well over 200 toys that were delivered to the neighborhood center for holiday giving. And what is most heart warming, they chapter and many of CHS’s student body and organizations adopted 23 families this Christmas. Christmas is also a time for giving and what better gift is there than food. Creston FFA helps the Creston Christmas Basket Club in the delivery and distribution of food baskets to the needy families in Creston and surrounding areas. The Christmas basket food activity is one of our members favorite activities. As Madison Skarda says “There is just this warm feeling that you get from this project that you don’t get other places.” Spring is a very busy time for our chapter yet we do not let that stand in the way

of continuing our service efforts. Each spring Creston FFA partners with the Creston Chamber of Commerce to plant the barrels that are in front of the caboose on Adams Street and more recently planting the planter in front of the Law Enforcement Center. This service project is an enjoyable one as for what Ag student doesn’t want to be out on a warm sunny day with their hands in the soil! Living to serve, it is not only said in the Creston FFA Chapter it is practiced. Our members are community minded young people that want Creston to be the best it can be for all of us to live, work, and raise families. Our members are the leaders of tomorrow, the service they do today will continue on into tomorrow.

Leaders Today are Leaders Tomorrow “To practice brotherhood, honor agricultural opportunities and responsibilities, and to develop those qualities of leadership which an FFA member should poses!” This is what our chapter members quote and believe is their duty, becoming a leader today so they are the leaders of tomorrow. Leadership is promoted within our chapter in many of ways. Getting members involved in our leadership development contests is an awesome opportunity for members to grow personal and team leadership. In 2013 Creston FFA saw 35 members participate in leadership contests. Con-

tests included the following: Conduct of Meetings, Parliamentary Procedures, Job Interview, Ag Sales, Radio Broadcasting, Public Speaking, Chapter Website, Agriculture Issues and Perceptions, Experience the Action, Chapter Quiz, and Greenhand Quiz. Creston saw Brooke Thelen advance to state with her prepared public speech. The chapter officer team is the driving force of leadership for the members. Our officer team attend the annual Chapter Officer Leadership Training (COLT) in Knoxville at the end of each school year. Chapter officers learn to set goals, have a

vision and most importantly work together to move the chapter forward. Officers enjoy COLT training as it always lends to new ideas and new friendships. Outside of contest, members build leadership through workshops and convention. In 2013 Creston FFA had outstanding participation with 24 members attend the state wide 212 and 360 Leadership Conference. Freshman and sophomores attending the 212 conference work with the state officer team in developing leadership skills, while junior and senior member attend the 360 conference working with Creston FFA Chapter officers Jeremy Stoll, Ashley Harris, Taylor Rice, Savannah the National FFA staff. Teamwork is an important part of leadership. Creston FFA Officer plan and implement an annual officer retreat to plan for the year and work together. In 2013 the chapter officer retreat was a campout at 3-Mile Lake.

District Convention was the second weekend in March 2013. FFA/Faculty Breakfast served On May 21, 14 Creston FFA Chapter officers catered a morning breakfast to approximately 30 Creston high school staff. The breakfast was served in the home economics room. Members provided breakfast casseroles

and pizza, muffins and breads, fruit, milk, coffee, and juice. Creston FFA celebrates the end of the year with the faculty breakfast to thank the faculty and staff for all they have done throughout the year.

Creston FFA takes 10th Place at Iowa Beef Expo Bright and early Sunday morning, 17 Creston FFA members braved the cold the test their abilities in evaluating breeding and market beef at the 2013 Iowa Beef Expo Judging contest, February 10th in Des Moines, Iowa. Members participating in the contest evaluated some of Iowa’s top breeding cattle, to say the least members were looking for the small “stuff” to select the top animals. Classes were made of either purebred or commercial beef, which included breeding heifers, bulls, and market steers. In addition to visually evaluating the

animals, team members were provided with performance data, scenarios and EPDs (Expected Progeny Difference) to evaluate and place cattle to meet specific situations. Livestock is an important factor in raising and breeding livestock. Producers use the skill of evaluation on a daily basis for the improvement of his or her herd through selective breeding practices and culling management. FFA members are learning at an early age through career development events such as livestock judging, in the classroom, and

through their supervise agricultural experience (SAE) projects how to use selection as a management tool for proper and successful animal husbandry. The Creston FFA livestock judging team will continue work and practice their skills as they prepare to participate in the Iowa FFA judging circuit this summer and the Iowa FFA state livestock judging career development event in June. The Creston FFA livestock judging team had much to celebrate, as they took home 10th place overall team at the 2013 Iowa Beef

Expo Judging Contest. Over 200 youth and 51 teams competed in the contest’s youth division. Members of the 10th place team included: Lane Miller, Cooper Bailey, Tyler Waddingham, and Tyson Tucker. This team also placed 8th in livestock placings and 25th in oral reasons. Union County Fair The county fair is a time to display and celebrate all of the hard work members have been doing all year long to raise their livestock projects. It is a favorite time of the year for most and certainly and exciting time. For some of our members, showing at the fair is second nature as they have been exhibiting from a young age

but for others it was the first time for them to step into the ring. Showing is not the only thing Creston FFA does at the Union County Fair, we are very busy during the week in Afton. The chapter started our Saturday by working the food stand, which can be a lot of fun! That evening the chapter

also participated in the donkey races that were sponsored by the Union County Fair board. Tuesday is kids day, and what a day that is. The chapter sponsors a livestock judging contest/clinic where youth and adults are encouraged to try their hand at evaluating market and breeding livestock. For the kids day activities the chap-

ter created a booth to showcase the community garden project. At the booth we gave away farm safety booklets that included an interactive safety DVD. Members made agriculturally related games and safety demonstrations for kids to play including the gravity flow wagon demonstration and a mock up of how lungs would

Hartman, will be attending Iowa State University this fall seeking a degree in Meteorology. Hartman earned his Iowa FFA degree in 2012, served the Creston FFA Chapter as an officer his junior and senior years, and was involved in a wide variety of state FFA leadership contests.

2013 Washington D.C. Leadership Conference Lane Miller was one of 115 Iowa FFA members who attended the National FFA Leadership Conference held June 2013in our nation’s capital. Positive attitudes, communication skills, and char-

acter building were some of the activities that participants were involved in. Teamwork, self-image, goal setting, and public relations were a few of the concepts involved in this week of personal growth and leadership

development. To increase the student’s understanding of FFA, they toured the National FFA Center in nearby Alexandria, Virginia. Through educational tours, patriotic programs, and visits with

governmental leaders, including members of the United States Congress, WLC helps increase a members awareness of our nation’s heritage. The week long sessions are conducted by five Na-

son of Roger and Melissa Baker My name is Adam Baker and I have been a part of the Creston FFA Chapter all 4 years of high school and 2 out of the 4 years I have been part of the Officer Team. Throughout my journey I have competed in subdistricts, districts, and state. Last year I worked really hard hard and was able to get my Iowa Degree. My favorite memory has been our summer camp outs with the officer team where we go swimming, hang out, and play games at three mile lake. Next year I plan on going up to Iowa State University and majoring in Ag Business.

son of Dennis Leith and Devon Leith I am Gavin Leith and have been a member of the Creston FFA Chapter for 4 years. My family has a long history of FFA membership at Creston. My SAE project has been working on Leith Ranch for my dad. On the ranch I am involved with all aspects of the beef industry and have recently gained skill in building home and barn structures. While in FFA I have earned my Iowa FFA Degree, participated in the district trap shoot and have attended many of the social events. My plans after graduation is to attend Iowa State University and major in Agriculture Business.

I’ve been involved in a lot of different activities through the years, including state convention every year, and have been the chapter’s treasurer for one year, and the vice president for one year. My favorite memory from FFA is our state convention last year, we all had a blast. Our chapter is like a big family, and I have loved every minute of it. My plans after high school are to go to a four year school and study Agronomy and agribusiness.

daughter of Michelle Rice I’ve been a member of the Creston FFA Chapter for four years. Throughout those years I have been chapter reporter and chapter secretary for two years. Also, I have been the chairperson of the leadership committee for two years. I’ve been active in many community service activities such as Make Creston Green, our community garden, Santa’s toy box, and many more. My biggest achievements through this chapter have been receiving my Iowa Degree and agriculture education programs. Being able to teach all ages of students about how to stay safe on the farm has become my favorite activity. My four years as a member of the Creston FFA chapter has made a huge impact on my life. I will never forget my first walk on FFA Way at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis my freshmen year. Being surrounded by the sea of blue jackets truly made me feel like I was apart of something bigger than myself. This organization has not only helped me grow has a person, but also as a leader. This chapter has become a family to me, supporting me in reaching all of my goals and giving me a helping hand when things don’t go as planned. Having a teacher and advisor like Mrs. Bailey has been a blessing; she has given me confidence in myself and pushed me to my full potential. The Creston FFA Chapter has not only helped me in high school, but it continues to help me as I prepare for my future. I am proud to say my future plans are to attend Iowa State University and major in Agriculture Business. I am hoping to work on the sales or financial side of the agriculture field after college.

I have been a member of the Creston FFA Chapter for four years and an assistant officer for three of those years. I have participated in many activities throughout my time as a member, including Bicycle Safety and the Make Creston Green Project. My favorite FFA memory was this year’s national convention. I had a great time bonding with everyone and got to see many unforgettable places. Even the trip down and back had some unforgettable moments. Next year, I plan on attending Iowa State University to major in Chemical Engineering.

Local Chapter History Vocational Agriculture, now called ASTM (Agriculture Science, Technology & Marketing) began in 1917 when Congress passed the Smith Hughes Act and in 1928 the FFA organization was established. It was not until 1951 that the FFA became a part of the Creston Community School system. From its inception the Creston FFA Chapter has grown. Initially the program was located in a small room at the old high school, but by 1969 the enrollment of 58 students had outgrown its small facility. That year the ground was broken for a new facility on the corner of Swan and Pine streets. Evert C. Hunsicker was the instructor at that time. After Hunsicker’s retirement in 1977, Galen R. Zumbach became the sixth FFA advisor to work in the Creston Community School System until his retirement in 2010. Kelsey Bailey became the seventh FFA Advisor to head the Creston FFA program when she began her duties in the 201011 school year. Today the Creston FFA membership has become one of the top programs in the state of Iowa and the nation with a membership of 73 students. The Creston FFA Chapter was recognized nationally for thirteen years in Building Our American Communities

winning state and national competition in 1993 and state competition in 1994. After twenty-three years the BOAC program was discontinued in 1995. During the past sixteen years the Creston FFA Chapter has been recognized as one of the nation’s top programs in the FFA’s National Chapter Award Program competition. Since 1986 the Creston FFA membership won state competition in the National Chapter Safety Award Program six times (1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1996). The Safety program was discontinued in 1996. Both BOAC and Safety are now part of the new National Chapter Award program. The Creston FFA Chapter was the only Iowa chapter to be recognized in all three national chapter award programs areas (BOAC, Safety, National Chapter) from 1985 to 1995. These accomplishments led to the Creston FFA Chapter being named Iowa’s top FFA Chapter in 1989, 1991, 1993, 1994, and 1995, in what was then called Triple Crown competition, and as Iowa’s Supreme FFA Chapter in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2006 in the new National Chapter Award Program competition. In 1996 the Creston FFA Chapter was only one of three chapters in the nation to be a top ten finalist in all three national chapter award areas (chapter

development, student development and community development) being selected as the nation’s best in community development. In 1997 and 1998 the chapter was named a finalist in two of the national chapter award competition areas (Community Development and Chapter Development) winning in the area of Community Development for a second and third time. The local Chapter is the only chapter in the nation to win three national chapter award competitions. In 1999 and 2003 the chapter was named a national merit finalist in Community Development, and Chapter Development, winning the community development award on the state level in 1999. Nine times in the past fifteen years the local chapter has been named a state winner in one of the five chapter areas (Economic, Environment, Human Resources, Agricultural Awareness) found in the National Chapter Award Program. The Community Development Recognition Program was created in 2004 to recognize those programs in the state that most impact their communities in the following area: (1) Economic, (2) Environment, (3) Human Resources, and (4) Agricultural Awareness. The Creston FFA Program has won the overall state CDRP competitions in 2007 and 2010. In

2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 the local chapter was named a winner in the areas of either environmental or economic development on the state level. Since 1977, 221 chapter members have received State FFA degrees. Prior to 1977 four chapter members received this coveted honor. Terry Taylor was the first member to receive this honor in 1961 followed by James Jones in 1962, Raymond Wilson in 1965, and John Wolfe in 1971. Raymond Wilson and his son Chris and daughter Erin were the first and only father, son, daughter combinations to receive their state FFA degrees. Chris received his degree in 1988 while Erin received her degree in 1992. Brian Priest won both state and national proficiency competition in 1986 in the area of Soil and Water Conservation. Brian Bolton was named the national winner in outdoor recreation in 1998, and Andy Jennet won the nation in the proficiency area of Turfgrass Management in 2008. The FFA today Developing leadership, cooperation and citizenship for tomorrow’s agriculturists - this is the main goal of the national FFA organization. For 86 years, the FFA has complemented agricultural instruction by making classroom lessons come to life through realistic applications. The FFA is structured on three levels - local, state and national. A board of Directors and six student national officers leads the National FFA Organization. Together they act on recommendations from the national convention delegates and set operational policy for the FFA. The program division, FFA New Horizons magazine, and the National FFA Supply Service, located in Alexandria Virginia (headquarters) carry through the policies, and provide programs and services for the organization. The national officers represent their members. A President, secretary, and four regional vice presidents are elected each year at the national convention. State associations function within the constitution of the national organization, but also may create individual leadership, award and contest programs. Chapters are chartered through the state associations. As on the national level, state officers lead their membership of the associations, and are elected

by convention delegates. The number and types of officers at the state level may vary. In Iowa the Iowa FFA student officers include president, six vice presidents, representing the six districts (North East, North Central, North West, South West, South Central, and South East Districts), a secretary and reporter. Each district is further broken down into 4 sub districts (North East, North West, South West, and South East, representing approximately 10-11 schools per sub district). The heart of the organization is at the local level. FFA Chapters may be chartered in any public school with an agriculture education program. Officers include a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, reporter, and sentinel. Additional officers may be utilized as the local chapter sees a need. A Program of Activities is utilized, serving as a road map for planning activities and accomplishing desired goals. Each member is assigned specific responsibilities within the program of activities to ensure total member involvement. Wideranging types of activities are utilized to meet individual member needs and the needs of their community. The FFA is structures into a degree program that rewards active FFA members for progress in all phases of

leadership, skill and occupational development. The Greenhand degree and the Chapter FFA degree are awarded at the chapter level. State Associations award top members with the State FFA degree. The highest degree, the American FFA degree, is conferred on an elite group of members at the national level. In addition to active membership (retain active membership until November 30, following the fourth National FFA Convention after graduation from high school), individuals can become members in three other categories - honorary, alumni and collegiate. Honorary membership is conferred on those individuals who have rendered outstanding service to the FFA and agriculture education. This degree is found on three levels: Honorary Chapter, and American FFA Degrees. Alumni membership is available to former members and other supporters of the FFA. Collegiate members belong to FFA chapters at two or four year post secondary schools and are enrolled in agriculture courses. FFA is a vital component of the agriculture education programs involving millions of students since its inception, in 1928, located in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia.

Trap shooting has become a popular and favorite event of the Creston FFA Chapter. The trap shoot is sponsored by the Indianola FFA Chapter and held at the Warren County Izaak Walton League. Trap shooting provides and opportunity for members to practice their marksmanship as well as develop a knowledge and respect for handling and operating firearms. Creston FFA Partners with Land O’Lakes for a Community Garden Land O’Lakes Foundation recognizes rural communities are a corner stone of American life and has established ongoing giving programs to insure their vitality and growth. Foundation resources are awarded through several programs that donate cash and encourage employee volunteerism in communities across the United States – where over 300,000 farmers, ranchers and employees work in agriculture, food and fiber production, dairy processing and food marketing. Land O’Lakes Foundation Community Grants Program provides support through cash grants to nonprofit organizations that are working to improve communities where the Land O’Lakes has a significant concentration of members or employees. Creston FFA Chapter was award a Community Grant through Land O’Lakes to create a community garden for Creston. This garden was a one acre plot locate east of Creston. The garden was 100% managed by the members of the chapter. Members had a true-hands on learning experience from the garden. The experience not only advanced members skill in vegetable production but also built an awareness and concern for the food insecure citizens in our community. The technical skills

gained from the project ranged from designing a garden blue print, selection of plants, seeding rates, planting depths and row spacing. Members also had the challenge of weed management, where the weeds one. Member hand harvested and distributed the produce to the Creston food pantry. The garden served as a not for profit business from the chapter and an opportunity for the participating members to be the owners and operators. Creston FFA Chapter named one of Iowa’s Best at Leadership Conference Creston FFA members along with advisor Kelsey Bailey, and chaperones, Wayne Hanson and Donna Watson were among the over 5,000 members and guests who attended the 85th Annual State FFA Leadership Conference in Ames, Iowa, April 20th through 23rd. After being named one of Iowa’s top FFA programs during the National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis Indiana in 2012 the Creston FFA Chapter’s tradition of excellence continued when the local FFA Chapter again was recognized as one of the elite programs in the state of Iowa during the 2013 State FFA Leadership Conference proceedings held at Hilton Coliseum on the campus of Iowa State University. The Creston FFA Chapter placed in the state’s National Chapter Award competition earning a gold emblem award and recognized with the Supreme National Chapter award. The local chapter was also named the state winner in the area of Environment in the Community Development competition and received the WHO Journalism Award and was named the Outstanding Chapter for SAE/Agriculture Education Publicity for 2012-2013. The chapter’s Agriculture Sales team earned a bronze emblem award, the team members included: Savan-

62nd Creston FFA Banquet held Creston FFA senior members were each awarded $1500 scholarships to assist with their college expenses at the Creston FFA’s 62nd Annual Parent/Member Banquet held Saturday May 11, 2013. Zach Powers received scholarships to pursue a degree in agriculture at an Iowa college or university from the Terry V. Taylor and Kevin Eblen Memorial Scholarship funds. Zach Powers and Jordyn Walsh each received $250 from the Paul and Verna Bailey Memorial Scholarship. Mr. Bailey and Mr. Taylor were involved in farming throughout his life in Union County and were avid supporters of the local FFA Chapter and its many activities. Kevin Eblen was an alumni of the Creston FFA Chapter, Iowa State FFA President and National FFA President. He supported FFA in some many capacities and touched the lives of millions of FFA members across the country. Special Awards: The Chapter’s fourth FFA Pride Award was given to Susan and Pat Miller. They were cited for their lifetime support of Creston’s youth and their involvement in agriculture. Creston FFA takes 12th Place at the 2014 Iowa Beef Expo Bright and early Sunday morning, 7 Creston FFA members braved the cold the test their abilities in evaluating breeding and market beef at the 2014 Iowa Beef Expo Judging contest, February 9th in Des Moines, Iowa. Members participating in the contest evaluated some of Iowa’s top breeding cattle, to say the least members were looking for the small “stuff” to select the top animals. Classes were made of either purebred or commercial beef, which included breeding heifers, and bulls. In addition to visually evaluating the animals, team members were provided with performance data, scenarios and EPDs (Expected Progeny Difference) to evaluate and place cattle

to meet specific situations. Livestock is an important factor in raising and breeding livestock. Producers use the skill of evaluation on a daily basis for the improvement of his or her herd through selective breeding practices and culling management. FFA members are learning at an early age through career development events such as livestock judging, in the classroom, and through their supervise agricultural experience (SAE) projects how to use selection as a management tool for proper and successful animal husbandry. The Creston FFA livestock judging team will continue work and practice their skills as they prepare to participate in the Iowa

FFA judging circuit this summer and the Iowa FFA state livestock judging career development event in August. The Creston FFA livestock judging team had much to celebrate, as they took home 12th place overall team at the 2014 Iowa Beef Expo Judging Contest. Over 200 youth and 48 teams competed in the contest’s youth division. Members of the 12th place team included: Tyler Waddingham, Lane Miller, Macy Evans and Dillon Bailey. This team also placed 11th in livestock placings and 12th in oral reasons. Chapter Ewe Flock makes excellent SAE for members The FFA Ewe Chain originated from a herd purchased in 1984 with money donated from First National Bank, Federal Land Bank Association and Production Credit Association (now known as Farm Credit Services). The original herd consisted of six ewes and provided John Taylor, a 1988 CHS graduate, with the opportunity to develop his own small flock of sheep. The ewe chain is awarded to a member based on an application process. Members desiring to receive the ewe chain for a two-year period fill out an application explaining how they will house and care for the animals after they receive them. After two lambing Creston FFA members work quickly to package over 260,000 meals as part of Iowa FFA’s seasons, the flock is returned to state wide philanthropy project through the Meals From the Heartland initiative. the chapter along with two replace-

ment females that can be used to increase the herd size or to replace some of the more aged ewes. After the members’ commitment is completed, they can do as they wish with the offspring produced during the time they cared for the herd. Most members have continued to expand their herd size after the flock is returned to the chapter. According to Creston FFA Advisor Kelsey Bailey, the local chapter has worked hard over the past several years upgrading their ewe chain. The chain is provided to members to assist them in developing a livestock enterprise. The newest recipient of the chapter’s ewe chain is freshman Trevor Marlin. “With the assistance and sup-

port of the chapter, I now have the opportunity to start my own flock” says Marlin. It is hoped the flock will make just as big an impact on Trevor’s SAE program as it did for the members prior to him. According to Trevor, “The ewe chain offers me an opportunity to develop my knowledge and skills in the sheep industry.” Since the ewe chain’s inception, twelve members have been selected as ewe chain recipients. After the coming lambing seasons, Trevors’s ewe chain commitment will expire and another member will get the opportunity to develop his/her sheep enterprise when the flock is moved to a new home.

Proficiency Awards Aid Goal Setting Creston FFA Chapter members gained firsthand experience in setting goals through the FFA Proficiency Award applications provided by the National FFA Foundation. Proficiency application were completed on member projects or supervised agricultural experience (SAE). Members who have completed the 11-page application and competed at the district level was Brooke Thelen in Equine Placement, Lane Miller in Equine Science, Tyler Waddingham

in Beef Entrepreneur, Zack Peppmeier in Diversified Livestock, and Darin Hatfield in Agricultural Sales. Thelen, Miller, Peppmeier, and Haftield’s proficiencies all qualified for state review while Waddingham’s received an alternate for state review. These students earned recognition in the agriculture proficiency award program by submitting applications, along with supporting photographs, based on their Supervised Agricultural Experience Program and their

FFA involvement. An agricultural education program is made up of three integrated parts: Classroom instruction, FFA and Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE). Students with an SAE learn by doing. Agriculture sales is a vital part of ag industry. One of Darin Hatfield’s SAE projects is working at Fareway Food Store. Darin has many duties at Fareway but is mostly responsible to the produce department. The technical and social skills Darin has learned at Fareway will help him in the future as he will be and educated consumer and his will have transferable employability skills. Darin’s SAE recently received a silver rating at district contest and is awaiting his rating from the state.

Senior, Zack Peppmeier has a SAE program that consists of a diversified livestock operation of beef cattle and swine. Zack has spent many year’s raising and exhibiting both cattle and hogs at county and state fairs. His freshman year, Zack was the recipient of the Creston FFA Chapter’s gilt chain where he purchased 2 purebred gilts. Zack raised piglets out of those gilts and exhibited the offspring at the Union County Fair and Iowa State Fair. During his FFA membership, Zack purchased a purebred Limousin female which he exhibited at the county and state fair as a heifer. Following calving Zack exhibited her as a cow-calf pair at the county fair. Zack recently received a gold rating at district contest and is awaiting his results from state.

Tyler Waddingham’s SAE focuses on beef production. Tyler raises and exhibits breeding and market cattle at local and state events. His SAE requires a lot of hours dedicated to working with his animals as well as researching into genetic records and animal history. Tyler also works for Rieck and Lents Show Cattle, through this experience he gains first hand training in how to raise beef cattle. Tyler’s SAE recently received a gold rating at district contest and has been issued and alternate for state consideration.

Senior, Lane Miller has spent his FFA career increasing his knowledge and perfecting his horsemanship skill through his equine science SAE. Lane’s SAE began by exhibiting his registered Quarter Horse gelding at local, state and regional shows. Since then, Lane has expanded his equine project to include a brood mare which he has raised two registered Quarter Horse foals. With the foaling he has gained skill in care and management of a brood mare as well as foal care. Lane has ground trained the foals that he has raised and has prepared them for showmanship and halter competition. Lane recently earned a gold rating for his SAE at the district contest and is awaiting his placing at the state level.

Creston FFA began a new tradition 3 years ago and that was to showcase FFA through school activities. Creston FFA member work diligently to design and build a homecoming float the fits the theme of the event.
