Mike Taylor, city administrator, reported in October the restored Creston Depot is currently in need of structural and cosmetic upgrades. That month, the city council voted to allow an architectural firm to begin investigating what structural
and cosmetic upgrades are needed. Thus, Matt Coen and Martha Green of Walker Coen Lorentzen — an architectural firm based in Des Moines — will be inspecting a portion of the Creston Depot over the next two months to better identify costs for the depot’s restoration. “This building, listed on
CEDAR RAPIDS (MCT) — Another day, another poll. On the face of it, a Hickman Analytics Inc., poll released Wednesday appears to be good news for Republicans. The Maryland-based firm found the open-seat race for the U.S. Senate is close — just a 2 to 4 percentage point spread between Democratic U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley and GOP hopefuls Mark Jacobs and State Sen. Joni Ernst, respectively. It also found Republican Gov. Terry Branstad leading Democratic challenger Sen. Jack Hatch by 10 percentage points. That’s “bad news for liberal Des Moines politician Jack Hatch,” according to Branstad campaign spokesman Tommy Schultz. Not only does the poll show the
challenger continuing to trail, Schultz said, but “his plan for Iowa includes raising taxes, growing the size of government and taking us back in time to Chet Culver’s failed administration.” Digging deeper into the poll of 500 Iowans self-identified as “likely 2014 voters,” Hatch spokesman John Hedgecoth said the numbers show “the governor is in trouble. That’s trouble with a capital T for Terry.” The poll showed a 10 percentage point margin between those who said they would “likely” vote for Branstad and those who would “likely” vote for Hatch. That narrowed to 47 to 43 percent when voters were asked if they were “definite.” That reinforces the Hatch campaign narrative that the
the National Register of Historic Places, is an incredible, important and mostly intact example of the 19th century architecture,” Green said. “And, care should be taken with the methods and material of rehabilitation so as not to degrade the integrity of the historic fabric of the building.” Creston’s depot was designed by architects Daniel Burnham and John Wellborn Root — among the nation’s most distinguished architects in the 19th century. It was adorned “a magnificent passenger station” by the public, according to Union County historical records.
Coen said 1977 was the last time the depot received any major renovations. City officials fully expect this restoration project to be expensive, and that’s why they are asking for a cost summary now, so renovations can be phased in over the next four to five years. Bids for restoration of the depot are scheduled for midJune into September. Taylor said masonry and tuck pointing work will be done first. The city has allocated up to $100,000 for renovations in FY2014. Initial renovations could begin as early as this September.
Next week, May 11-17, is National Nursing Home Week, and many of the area residents, caregivers, families, staff and volunteers have activities planned to commemorate the week. The theme this year is “Living the Aloha Spirit.” Creston Nursing and Rehab has a variety of events planned including Bible trivia Monday, manicures and massages on Thursday and VFW presentation on Friday. See a full schedule of their events on page 2A of today’s paper. “This is a week where we celebrate both the elderly community and their caregivers,” said Lori Harvey, administrator at Creston Nursing and Rehab. “We have extra activities and good food all week. There really is a strong bond that forms between the elderly and a caregiver in nursing homes. We truly think of them and take care of them as if they are our own parents or grandparents.” Meanwhile, Crest Haven Care Centre, 1000 E. Howard St. in Creston, is having a 50th anniversary appreciation carnival 5-7 p.m. May 15 to coincide with National Nursing Home Week. See an advertisement in today’s paper on page 5A.
GOP probe of Hatch campaign finds good news Benghazi in poll showing Branstad leading holds political peril Hatch

race that Branstad was leading 55 to 27 percent nearly a year ago is now within the margin of error. That’s because as Iowans get to know Hatch, they see him as a “solid, alternative leader,” Hedgecoth said. Hatch’s numbers are “gradually coming up from only 31, 32 only a few weeks ago to 40 now.” While some of the change in poll numbers “starts to get into the idiosyncrasies of the specific poll,” Hedgecoth said,
“What is clear is that this is a close race and there is some range of numbers in the low single digits that represent where this race stands.” Or not, according to Chris Larimer, associate professor of political science at University of Northern Iowa, who has been looking at the gubernatorial polls over time. It may be getting too far down in the weeds for anyone but campaign staff and students of polling, but Larimer said the differences in results may be rooted in the algorithms polling firms use to define potential respondents. Even in random samples, Larimer said, “how the universe of potential participants is defined is absolutely critical
WASHINGTON (MCT) — The creation of a special committee to investigate the 2012 Benghazi attacks carries the potential for political gains — and risks — for Republicans. The House of Representatives voted Thursday create a special panel to investigate the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks, a vote pushed through by the Republican majority on a largely party-line vote. The panel is to investigate “all policies, decisions, and activities” dealing with the attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi that left four Americans dead. Its timetable is open-ended — virtually
