Due to the required aging process, much of what’s available at Quincy Street is still in its adolescent phase. The distillery’s Bourbon Spring whiskey is a “baby whiskey” aged for four months in small, charredoak barrels, for example. The flavors are still easy to identify (they blend with time), and the result is a sweet, smokey whiskey with a bit of a kick. For those who prefer gin or vodka, the distillery has also branched out to include a “railroad gin” and a range of spirits distilled from mead – basically water, honey and botanicals. The Prairie Sunshine, one of Mancini’s mead spirits, has a flavor profile similar to a white tequila, and thus, it makes one mean mojito. Which, of course, brings us back to the grand opening of Quincy Street’s tasting bar last

Friday. Because of the bars liquor license, the only alcoholic products that can be sold are made in-house. At the opening, the cocktail selections included gin sours, hot toddies, whiskey sours and old-fashioneds. But then, some prefer their whiskey neat and with piano music, which was provided by Riverside’s Bob Opel and friends livening up the night with some prohibition-era tunes. Frank Gangware of Riverside was sipping on some of Quincy Street’s Bourbon Spring whiskey Friday. His son recently went on a trip to the Three Floyds Brewery in Indiana, and Gangware said he could see people doing the same with Quincy Street. “It’s a very interesting bourbon,” he said with a sip. “I think it will become one of the better known brands, and,

yes, I think it will bring new people to Riverside.” The opening brought out locals and travelers from Chicago alike. Karen Boylan of Brookfield came out to the event with her husband on the snowy night looking to try something new. “I have a whiskey with seltzer – it’s very good,” Boylan said. “I’ve tried [some of the area’s microbrewed beers], but the distillery is something else. It’s cool to have a local distillery.” Unike a real speakeasy, you wont need a password to get in at the door. But, the phrase, “this one’s on me” certainly wouldn’t hurt. grown large in the small confines of the tasting bar at Friday night’s grand opening of “the speakeasy.” “Well, this not only lets people sample [the distillery’s products] but shows them how to mix them.” Like its whiskeys, Quincy Street Distillery still is relatively young. Full time, Mancini is a physicist at Argonne National Laboratory, but he’s always been a crafter at heart. In college, Mancini made his own beer. He’s also previously toyed with the idea of making wine – even going so far as to plan to purchase a vineyard in Michigan for a time before starting Quincy Street. “It’s something that’s always been of interest to me,” he said. “The desire was planted in me as a young man.” Quincy Street Distillery was born in Riverside about two years ago. The distillery has been in production for about a year and a half. According to Mancini, Bourbon whiskey, as most know it, takes two years to mature and mellow in wood barrels as it gradually gets its golden-brown

RIVERSIDE – On a recent, brutally cold night in Riverside, I sat down with Quincy Street Distillery owner Derrick Mancini and sipped a little moonshine. And yes, while the whiskey was good for taking a bit of the bite out of the air, I was surprised, too, that the “young” whiskey lacked much bite itself. “Yeah, it’s pretty smooth, right?” Mancini said. In recent years, the boom of microbreweries across the Chicago area has done much to familiarize many of us with a wide and varied assortment of locally-made ales and lagers. Derrick Mancini, of Riverside, is hoping to help do the same thing with whiskey. Local whiskey distillers are not as common as breweries, yet, but their numbers are steadily growing, he said. “We’re not the smallest distillery in Illinois,” Mancini said. “But we’re pretty darn close.” But, just how do you drink moonshine, one might wonder? Or, for that matter, how do you drink Quincy Street’s Prairie Sunshine – and what is it? To help with those questions, Mancini has branched out from the distilling business to open his own “speakeasy” in Riverside. And so, on a not-quite-so-brutally-cold night in Riverside, that’s how I wound up drinking Mancini’s whiskey again, but this time in a cocktail. “You know, we get the question, ‘what do I do with it,’ ” Mancini said between making cocktails for a crowd that had

Both installations, which are funded by the village of Riverside’s 2014 Capital Improvement budget, were approved by board members at their regular meeting Thursday night. New floors and lockers, which have to be deconstructed, will be installed in both the male and female locker rooms. The floors cost a total of $3,000 and lockers cost a total of $24,000. “The floors we have now are carpet, which isn’t good,” said Police Chief Tom Weitzel. “We’re going to replace that

Brookfield awarded for financial reporting SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BROOKFIELD – The village of Brookfield has been honored for an eighth year for excellence in financial reporting, according to a news release from the village. The village announced Jan. 14 that it was again awarded the Certificate for Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for its comprehensive annual financial report.

The certificate of achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, according to the release. The village was judged by an impartial panel to have met the standards of the association, including demonstrating constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate the village’s financial story, according to the release. “Financial stability has become the norm over the last eight years in Brookfield,” Village Manager

Riccardo Ginex said. “It is, however, important to take a moment to realize how focused staff is on ensuring the long range financial health, and disclosure of that financial health, to the residents and taxpayers of our community.” The village added that work on the village’s 2013 audit has begun. The Village Board also recently approved a five-year Capital Plan, as well as a rolling twoyear budget document. The village’s 2014 Appropriation Ordinance is expected to be approved Jan. 27.

Resident’s ambitious plan approved By NICK SAMUEL msleditorial@shawmedia.com RIVERSIDE – At the Board of Trustee’s regular meeting on Thursday, a Riverside resident proposed an ambitious plan to trustees to add the village of Riverside to the list of World Heritage Sites. This plan, approved by board members, was introduced by Paul Stack, former village president. “The idea came to my wife and I this summer while we were vacationing in Bermuda,” said Stack. “As we were walking, I became curious to know what process was involved in listing property on the World Heritage Site.” A World Heritage Site must be an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble, or landscape, which illustrates

RIVERSIDE – Pensions. Debt. Term limits. These were the buzz words at a Candidates Night event hosted by the Riverside Township Regular Republican Organization at Riverside Township Hall on Thursday night. Moderated by Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka – who also was celebrating her birthday and endured two rounds of singing – the event gave Republican candidates five minutes to present their platform and connect with voters, before allowing two questions each from the public. Speakers at the event included candidates for governor state Sen. Bill Brady, Bruce Rauner, and Treasurer Dan Rutherford; candidates for lieutenant governor; Evelyn Sanguinetti and state Rep. Jil Tracy; candidate for attorney general, Paul Schimpf; candidate for secretary of state, Michael Webster; candidate for treasurer Tom Cross; and Cook County Commissioner Liz Gorman. Sen. Brady was the first to speak at the event and thanked attendees for their support in his previous attempts to win the governor’s seat. Brady focused on Illinois’ “leadership problems” in his five minutes on the floor and called for the elimination of state income taxes and the Illinois Board of Edu-

cation as he told attendees he was their best chance in the Republican race. Brady was followed by Bruce Rauner who thanked attendees for their patriotism and support of Republicans. His goal, he said, was to get Gov. Pat Quinn out of office. “This is out year,” Rauner told the crowd of about 30 residents from Riverside and the surrounding area. Rauner said his experience in business and his work overseeing retirement investments made him the best candidate for Republicans. Though he’s not a politician, Rauner said he has worked in politics for a long time, including working with Chicago mayors on education reform. Rutherford was the final candidate for governor to address the crowd Thursday evening. “This isn’t my first rodeo,” Rutherford said and added he was the only candidate to have won a statewide race. “You have to be a unique, reasonable Republican to win [in Illinois].” Rutherford largely focused on his ability to win in a race against Quinn, citing a speculative poll that showed him winning by two points. “We have to be very serious about who we select as our nominee,” he warned. Rutherford largely focused on bringing spending in line in Illinois and balancing the state’s budget as the keys to

Cheff, a young, male tan and white pit bull mix, was found on a freezing cold night in Riverside, abandoned in his cage in the MacNeal Professional Building parking lot with some food and a note telling anyone who found him his name. On Jan. 12, Cheff was deemed in good health from a local veterinarian and was released to the Midwest Rescue Center for possible adoption and/or home placement. Brookfield-based Licitra Roofing is sponsoring the national “No Roof Left Behind” initiative locally. Homeowners who want a free roof can go to the company’s website and nominate themselves, or

another homeowner in need of a roof, at www.licitraroofing.com. Nominees should look for the No Roof Left Behind link on the website. In order to qualify, the nominees must own the home they are living in and be a resident of Cook County. The homeowner must also be current on their mortgage payments. Nominations will be accepted through July 10 and will be reviewed by a team of local volunteers. Four fi-

nalists in the contest will be selected for public voting. RIVERSIDE – A Chicago man faces felony possession charges and may lose his Jeep because of a Riverside police officer’s keen sense of smell Jan. 11. According to Litroy Bolton police reports, the officer was driving at 11:30 p.m. north on Harlem Avenue when a vehicle traveling southbound with its window open passed, emitting a strong smell of marijuana. The officer made a U-turn and stopped the vehicle, driven by Litroy Bolton, 27, of the 1800 block of South Avers Avenue, Chicago. Bolton admitted

to smoking a blunt earlier in the evening. Police said Bolton voluntarily handed over a small amount of marijuana that he had in his jacket. A subsequent search of Bolton’s 1998 Jeep revealed another bag filled with smaller bags of marijuana, apparently prepared for delivery, police said. Open alcohol also was found in the vehicle, according to police. Riverside police charged Bolton with felony possession of marijuana, felony possession with intent to delver, illegal transportation of alcohol and several traffic citations. Police said they confiscated Bolton’s Jeep and will seek civil asset forfeiture on the vehicle.

BROOKFIELD – Two men have been charged with burglary from an incident at 3:44 a.m. Jan. 14 at Past-Time Hobbies in Brookfield, according to a Brookfield Police Department report. Witnesses said they saw two men wearing hoodies kick in the door of the business and then run across the street to a room at the Colony Motel. A responding officer at the business noticed a cash register missing. According to the report, the motel owner was able to identify one of the men in the room

as Milo Henry Simmons, 43, of Cicero. Police surrounded the room and arrested Simmons and Adam Avizius, 28, of Brookfield. While searching the room, police discovered a cash register in a crawl space, the report said. Witnesses were able to identify Avizius as the man who kicked in the door at the business, while Simmons was the look out According to the report. A woman in the room with Simmons and Avizius also was taken into custody for questioning and later released, according to the report.

What you should know about e-book reading at the library Most people know that e-books can be read on an e-reader such as a Nook or a Kindle, and those who own such devices can purchase e-books they want to read for them. But most people are not aware that they can obtain e-books for their Nooks, Kindles or other e-readers from the Brookfield, North Riverside or Riverside public libraries for free. COMMUNITY According to the Pew VOICE Research Center, most people Robert don’t know U.S. public libraries provide e-books and other Likfa digital resources, but, in fact, today’s libraries offer their patrons more than ever before. Libraries continue to offer new services and programs to meet the ever-changing needs and desires of our communities. According to a 2012 American Library Association study, the number of public libraries offering e-books has doubled in the last five years, with 75 percent now offering the service. Best-selling and classic e-books are available 24/7 from each library’s website for free with your library card. Audiobooks, music and video also are available. Titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period, but, there are no late fees. While the Brookfield, North Riverside, Riverside libraries and other public libraries are working to ensure public access to information for all, libraries in general are facing challenges. According to the American Library Association, some e-book bestsellers are greatly restricted or unavailable to most libraries for purchase and, of the e-books we can buy, the library price often is three or five times more than the consumer price, resulting in fewer copies for library readers to discover. On the other hand, other publishers – including hundreds of smaller, independent presses and a rising tide of self-published authors – do understand the value of placing books in libraries. A recent report from Library Journal found that more than half of all library users report purchasing books by an author they discovered through the library. The ALA has undertaken efforts to bridge the gap between libraries and publishers regarding the availability and pricing of e-books. We support their efforts to help us provide e-books to our patrons.

A thumbs down to the person or people who recently abandoned their dog, Cheff, in the parking lot of the MacNeal Professional Building in Riverside on a freezing cold day. The owners left a note with the dog’s name and some food but also locked the dog in its cage in the open in 14 degree weather. There are so many great shelters, services and people in the area that leaving the dog abandoned in the cold should not have been the only option. A thumbs up to Lillian Dudczyk, a 97-year-old Brookfield resident who is still working at Creative Dental in Brookfield – her place of business for the last 46 years. According to Lillian, she wouldn’t have it any other way. She loves interacting with the dental practice patients and gives her something to look forward to. We can only hope at 97 we are still as sharp, energetic and optimistic as Lillian.

No applause for parking garages I shop downtown Elmhurst only when I can find on-street parking. I do not like nor do I feel safe in parking garages. I don’t care how many parking garages Elmhurst builds, I will only shop downtown Elmhurst when I can secure ground-level, open parking. Perhaps Elmhurst should consider tearing down a vacated building such as Plass Appliance to provide more onstreet parking. I am sure the city is worried about loss of revenue from the torn-down building. However, wouldn’t increased foot traffic to existing stores help prevent more stores from closing in downtown Elmhurst and also entice new stores?

Keep tradition with Party at Kiwanis Park What is Brookfield thinking about switching the Party in the Park to JC/Ehlert Park? They should just cancel the Party in the Park this year for the Fourth of July because Kiwanis Park is under construction, and who would want to go all the way to JC/Ehlert Park for the Party in the Park? It has always been a tradition to have Party in the Park at Kiwanis Park. To have it at JC/Ehlert Park is not the tradition. I think the tradition should be canceled this year and save the money and have it for next Fourth of July.

Kudos to snowplowing crews I’ve been a Bloomingdale Township resident for more than 30 years, and the Township Highway Department has done an excellent job with my road in the unincorporated area I live in. Every time I look out the window, I see a snowplow going by. I had a doctor appointment the next day after the big storm. She read the Alton Telegraph broadcast for the visually impaired, served as ombudsman for the elderly, and was moderator for an animal internet forum. Her memberships include the American School Health Association, Associates of Clinical Pharmacology, ANAD, HERS, Frederick Law Olmsted Society, Missouri Historical Society, Alton Museum of History and Art, Alton Landmarks Society, Purdue University Alumni Organization, SUAA, Eta Sigma Gamma (National Health Science Honorary), and Phi Kappa Phi (National Scholastic Honor Society). We remember her as an avid lifelong student, a stubborn, tenacious fighter for “the innocents”: she never met an animal she didn't like and most of her pets were rescues. She loved books, music, and art Rembrandt, Bosch, and Kahlo. She traveled widely throughout North and Central America, Europe, Taiwan, and Japan. From 1994 until her death, she coordinated and supervised virtually every detail of the comprehensive restoration of her home, the Drummond Mansion in Alton, Illinois. National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2014 is January 26 to February 1. Catholic schools have a long-standing commitment to academic excellence that is rooted in the faith- based mission of Catholic education. The Common Core State Standards in no way compromise the Catholic identity or educational program of a Catholic school. The Common Core State Standards initiative, begun in 2007, is a state-led, bipartisan effort that is not a requirement for participation in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) or any other federally- funded program, and there are no mandates for any Catholic school to follow any federal rules if they adopt the Common Core. Adoption of the Common Core is voluntary; individual states, Catholic dioceses and other private schools make their own decisions about whether to adopt the standards. The Common Core State Standards are a set of high-quality academic expectations that all students should master by the end of each grade level. The standards establish consistent learning goals for all students that focus on preparing them to succeed in college and careers in a globally competitive workplace. The standards define and clearly communicate grade-specific goals and inform parents about learning outcomes, making it easier for parents to collaborate with teachers in helping their children achieve success. The Common Core State Standards are not a curriculum. A curriculum includes what is taught, when it is taught, how it is taught and what materials to use. None of these items are included in the Common Core State Standards. For Catholic schools, all of these elements will continue to be determined by diocesan superintendents, principals and teachers working to meet the needs of their students. The Common Core represents a fundamental shift in the teaching and learning process. The Common Core establishes clear, measurable goals for students that assist teachers in making instructional decisions. The standards place emphasis on creativity, critical and analytical thinking and application to curriculum content. The Common Core is not a national curriculum. It guides the way that instruction takes place in each classroom, allowing the Catholic school to develop its own curriculum content. An excellent Catholic school provides a rigorous academic curriculum that integrates faith and knowledge. As trained professionals, Catholic school administrators and teachers continually seek the best instructional methods for educating students. In the past, dioceses and schools have developed their own standards or adapted state standards for use with their own curriculum. Some will continue to do this. To assist those incorporating the new standards, the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) and partners in Catholic education established the Common Core Catholic Identity Initiative (CCCII). CCCII provides resources to design and direct the implementation of Common Core within the culture and context of a Catholic school curriculum. Thus Catholic schools can infuse the standards with the faith, principles, values and social justice themes inherent in the mission of a Catholic school. NCEA, the largest private professional education organization in the world, provides leadership, direction and service to its members through a variety of professional development activities that support whatever teaching and learning activities the individual school chooses implement.
