Gabrielle Walsh’s cellphone wasn’t getting any reception in the Hollywood studio where she was auditioning for a TV show, hoping to land her first big role. So, even though her agents had gotten together for a conference call to tell her the good news, they couldn’t deliver it. Later in the day, Walsh exited the bathroom at the studio when she got a call from an unknown number. “I get a call from the hairdresser asking me what’s a good day for me to come in and get my hair done,” Walsh said. “It was a little frustrating because I knew I couldn’t scream in the studio.” She screamed with joy as soon as she got in her car, though. Walsh, a 24-year-old actress from Indian Head Park, landed the lead female role in the new film “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.” The film is the fifth in a series of horror movies that use securi-

Riverside and school districts 96 and 208 agree on crossing guard costs By LAUREN HILL msleditorial@shawmedia.com RIVERSIDE – At the Riverside Village Board’s meeting Dec. 19, trustees approved a resolution between the village, Riverside School District 96 and Riverside-Brookfield Township High School District 208 to collectively fund crossing guards for the districts’ schools, in addition to considering changes to a proposed ordinance regulating a number of village commissions. The village approved a resolution for the school districts and the village to equally fund six regular school crossing guards and two replacement school crossing guards for the area. District 96 will still need to approve the resolution at their January meeting. “This was very gratifying,” said Village Manager Peter Scalera. “It’s a new day in terms with our relationship with both [ school districts] 96 and 208. There was an extreme sense of neighborliness and camaraderie and cooperation, so I’m really excited about this.” Village trustees agreed with the village manager’s comments. “I think this is a great way for all of the taxing bodies to come together and do what’s best for the community as a whole” Trustee Joseph Ballerine said. “I think we’ve come a long way with this.”

In addition to the crossing guard funding agreement, trustees also considered a proposed ordinance that would regulate several village commissions that oversee the overall look of Riverside. Proposed amendments for the Landscape Advisory Commission, Preservation Commission, Historical Commission and Economic Development Commission suggested that the Landscape Advisory Commission should be in charge of the landscape of the village and the Preservation Commission should be in charge of the village’s historic structures. Preservation Commission member Richard Ray brought forward his commission’s concerns that parkways and public lands in Riverside were not defined in the ordinance proposed. He also recommended that the village require a permit process to allow and control what citizens plant that is near public property. Landscape Advisory Commission (LAC) Chairperson Dianna LaMantia said her commission requested that the board remove public easement. LaMantia said regulating where the public space ends and the private space begins was too erratic in the village and would be too hard to control. The proposed ordi-

nance would remove the business district entirely from the control of the LAC. The LAC recommended that the village define the business district and include that as part of its responsibility to keep continuity in the district’s landscape design. Trustee Jean Sussman agreed with Ray and LaMantia in that public property needs to be defined and enforced in Riverside. “If someone plants daffodils from the sidewalk up to their house, nobody does anything about it. It’s a hard thing to enforce because you have to go and measure the easement from the sidewalk to the house,” Sussman said. She said the board should not remove oversight to the plantings in the parkways and parkways. She was concerned about going from too much oversight to no oversight. “I know that it was a painful process for certain people in the village to look at benches and drinking fountains and bicycle racks, however, there should be consistency on that and it should resemble the rest of the village and it should resemble what goes on around the water tower and those kinds of areas,” she said. Trustee Douglas Pollock said there should be design guidelines set up and enforced for these purposes.

Spend an evening in South America at Rio’s ADDISON – One of the joys of living in this melting pot of a nation is that everyone comes here, and they bring their delicacies with them. I love American, Italian, Mexican, Thai and Japanese cuisine, along with several other varieties I’ve enjoyed over the years. But every once in a while, it’s fun to branch out by tasting something new. And something new is exactly what I found at Rio’s Fine South American Cuisine in Addison. Billed as a Peruvian restaurant on various websites, Rio’s also has delicacies from Argentina and Brazil that are sure to tempt your taste buds. When you first walk in, you’re greeted by a bar area that’s tasteful and hip, but not particularly ethnic. You could meet business clients for drinks here and they wouldn’t necessarily even recall that it was a South American establishment – unless they look closely at the wine list, which is filled with selections from all over the continent. Enter the dining area, though, and you’ll find yourself in a scene that’s both elegant and evocative of the dishes you’re about to sample. A massive mural across the back wall combines the famous Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro in Brazil with the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. Other small decor touches give hints of South America without overwhelming the room and making it kitschy. I stopped by Rio’s on a recent evening with a dining companion, and I started right off with an authentic drink from south of the equator – a Dona Paula Sauvignon Blanc from Argentina, which the wine list describes as “bright, crisp, tart green apple skin, lime zest, guava, and grapefruit with a touch of minerality.” It proved to be a terrific accompaniment to the dishes that followed. We started with the Peruvian Sampler, wanting to

It included a generous helping of perfectly seasoned steak alongside fettucine mixed with Peruvian pesto (spinach, basil, white cheese, walnuts and olive oil). The steak and the pasta both tasted great on their own, but together the flavors were perfectly paired. We both really wanted dessert – interesting items included churros filled with caramel and hot chocolate dipping sauce, and ice cream made with Andean Lucuma fruit – but we were both too stuffed to properly enjoy it. That just means that next time I’ll have to – regretfully – forgo the Peruvian Sampler to save some room to try some exotic ice cream.

Bears’ final loss elicits special kind of hurt By TOM MUSICK tmusick@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – Losing hurts. But losing to the Green Bay Packers? In the final minute? To end your season? That’s a whole ’nother level of sports heartbreak. And it happened to the Bears. At the hands of the Packers. Again. No wonder the Soldier Field speakers blared a sad song in the waning moments of the Bears’ 33-28 loss to their oldest rivals. The outcome lifted the Packers into the playoffs as NFC North champions, while the Bears turned to face a painful offseason that could include many difficult personnel changes. The lyrics filled the ears of stunned fans after the Packers’ game-winning score. “You had a bad day,”

echoed the song by Daniel Powter. “The camera don’t lie. You’re coming back down, and you don’t really mind. You had a bad day. You had a bad day.” For the Bears, it’s going to get worse before it gets better. Any football fan will tell you that the line between winning and losing is razor thin. One ill-timed mistake can separate contenders from pretenders in the NFL. That’s why it was tough to see Bears general manager Phil Emery make the rounds in a quiet locker room after the game. One by one, Emery visited with his players, placing an arm on their shoulder and offering some brief words of encouragement. Some Bears players were so upset that they had not yet removed their pads more than 20 minutes after the

final whistle. Others were so distraught that they leaned forward and braced themselves against their lockers, heads down, eyes shut. Bears linebacker Lance Briggs wanted to escape. With his stare fixed on the carpet, he pulled a rolling suitcase and refused to stop and speak with reporters. Other players spoke softly about narrowly losing a winner-take-all game. “This is going to hurt,” cornerback Tim Jennings said. “It’s hard, man” defensive tackle Stephen Paea said. “We do this for each other.” On the opposite side of the stadium, Packers players celebrated like happy children. Some players snapped pictures with their cellphones to capture the moment. What was it like when the

Packers first entered the locker room after the game? “Oh, my God,” defensive lineman Ryan Pickett said. “[We were] just excited, man. Jumping around. Everybody was happy, man. “It’s our journey. We made it. Now we get to erase our slate, start a new one, and play ball some more in January.” So close were the Bears to enjoying this moment. So close were the Packers to a long, quiet offseason. “You can describe it a lot better with your writing,” Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk said. “You guys are professionals. I’m not smart enough to really put it into words. I wish I was. “But it was nuts. It’s been crazy, this whole run.” As Hawk spoke, the image of Emery visiting with his

players proved hard to shake. Those players will part ways this week and disperse to their hometowns across the country, and dozens soon might learn that they will not be coming back. It’s nothing personal. “This is the NFL,” Paea said. “If you don’t do your job, they make changes.” Surely, the Packers could empathize as NFL brethren. Surely, some part of them could feel badly for the Bears. Right? “No,” Pickett said with a grin. “There’s not one part of me that feels for the Bears.” Then he laughed. It was the deep, belly laugh of a 6-foot-2, 340-pound man. It was a winners’ laugh.

He is who he is. In the first half, his offense showed the bad as it stalled on four three-and-outs, although it also showed the good. On his second drive, an eight-play, 80-yard series, Cutler stormed downfield, completing three passes. He topped it off with a 4-yard throw to running back Matt Forte through the cold, misty air, giving his team a 7-0 lead and its only points of the first half. Cutler couldn’t control much of what happened after that, though. He couldn’t control Alshon Jeffery fumbling a precise pass in the second quarter, setting up a Green Bay field goal. He couldn’t control that

CHICAGO – The tangled web of the Jay Cutler narrative was supposed to be straightened out Sunday. His last game on contract, a 33-28 thriller won by the Packers, was going to make it clear. Play well, Good Jay, forget your 1-7 record against Green Bay, and all is OK. Riverside Brookfield junior class hopes to keep winning trend going on varsity

dsantaromita@shawmedia.com RIVERSIDE – Take a look at the Riverside Brookfield varsity boys basketball roster and something might stand out about the ages of the players. Of the 15 players on the roster, just two are seniors. Two sophomores also are on the team and both play major minutes. Most of the team is juniors, however. That junior class has seen a lot of success coming up through the lower levels and is hoping to turn that into winning ways with the varsity team. In two years on the sophomore level, juniors Sam Johnson and Paul Sitkiewicz went 43-5. “It just shows you how bad losing is when you only lose twice a year,” Johnson said. “It just makes you want to win more.” Those sophomore teams also helped form chemistry for the current varsity team. When Johnson and Sitkiewicz were freshmen, they played up on the sophomore level with the Bulldogs’ two current seniors, Jack VandeMerkt and Will Kincanon. Sophomore Mark Smith played up a year to join the sophomore team a year ago. Throw in some extra time together during AAU season and the Bulldogs had no trouble working with each other on the court. “We all had played together,” Sitkiewicz said. “We already had a lot of chemistry coming in.” The only player that didn’t play with the 11 juniors on the roster is sophomore Daniko Jackson, who slid into the starting point guard role. Jackson comes in with an impressive pedigree of his own. He was on a freshman A team that went 24-0 last season and

won 20 of its games by double figures. “The years before, we had a lot of success so we had something to live up to,” Sitkiewicz said. “We accepted it and we were ready. “We had to put in a lot of work over the summer and even the fall getting [ready] with the team and making sure everyone is on the same page before coming to the first game. Everything is going well so far.” Overall, the Bulldogs are off to a winning start. They are 3-0 in the Metro Suburban Conference, on pace for the program’s 13th straight conference title. Individually, Johnson hit the ground running by scoring 27 points in his varsity debut. As the calendar flips to 2014, what better time than to reflect on some of the best performances put forth by local high school athletes in 2013. Several state champions were crowned, and even more teams and athletes made their marks with top finishes in state competitions.

School: Lyons Township Sport: Girls gymnastics Place: State champs State run: The Lions won the first state title in the program’s history and in a dramatic fashion. LT trailed Prairie Ridge by a quarter of a point after the first day of competition and could only make up the ground in event finals. The Lions pulled off the rare Saturday comeback by adding 0.575 to the team total in the event finals and won the title. Sophomore Kelsy Kurfirst won floor exercise, was second in the all-around and on vault and tied for third with junior teammate Katie Carling on balance beam. Junior Michelle Cozza was second on bars and tied for third on vault. Quote: “When I improved on the bar score it got me motivated and I knew that our team had a potential of winning state so we all carried that to beam,” junior Michelle Cozza said. “It was surreal.”

Name: Stephanie Lin, Lyons Township Sport: Badminton Place: State champ State run: Lin was a surprise winner at the state tournament last spring. She was seeded in the 5-8 range, but dropped just one set all tournament. She upset top seed Ailynna Chen of Hinsdale Central in the quarterfinal round and later defeated Hinsdale South’s Emma Adcock in the final. Quote: “I don’t think I was expecting that at all.
