Impress Bridal offers variety, latest trends By Kayla Langmaid
Any bride’s dream and vision for her big day can be fulfilled in a small town bridal store with a big city selection. Step inside Impress Bridal in Newton and find the latest trending dress styles for brides, bridesmaids and the mother of the bride. The full service salon in the heart of the town’s square has gone above and beyond to filter in popular designers and has continued to provide brides with a welcoming experience. Shop owner Lara Bunkers brought her eight years of experience from her bridal store in Ankeny to Newton in March 2016, and she has integrated a fresh atmosphere to fit Newton’s clientele. Some designers include Casablanca, Allure and a recent addition, Adrianna Papell. “There is only one other bridal store in central Iowa that offers Adrianna Papell,” Bunkers said. Bunkers said the current bridal dress trends include lace,
open backs and bohemian. The bohemian style is very light-weight, romantic and flowy, which has been very popular at Impress Bridal, Bunkers said. On the other hand, brides who are searching for a dress to fit their rustic, chic wedding will not be disappointed. Impress Bridal has many lace dresses with different body styles, including A-line, mermaid and ball gown. Elegant styles also include lace sleeves or straps. Long sleeves are also not unheard of for the current trend. The bride who is looking for a beach style dress for a destination wedding should look no further than Impress Bridal. Bunkers said there is also a variety of dress materials, including lace, satin and taffeta. “We’re in a small town, but that doesn’t mean we lack inventory or beauty,” Bunkers said. “Whatever you desire, we have.” Don’t forget the accessories — Impress Bridal offers a variety of beaded belts for dresses, hair accessories, jewelry and shoes. Local photographer sees videography natural addition to services By Mike Mendenhall For a still photographer, adding motion to a portfolio is not as easy as it might seem. Lighting, framing and angles take on a different form when a moment goes from snapshot to alive. When local wedding photographer Ben Sanders examines his sample clips, the feeling behind initial reaction is key to his product. “Close-ups and trying to capture expressions,” Sanders said. “That seems to be the focus when I look back on the video I take — people’s reactions and expres-
sions, the feeling of the day. I think that’s the most important thing to remember.” Sanders is young, 21 years old to be precise, but don’t mistake his age with a lack of experience. The Des Moinesbased shooter and life-long Newton resident started his photography business at age 15. With six years shooting families, weddings and senior portrait stills, Sanders said adding motion to his services seemed like a natural progression and necessary to stay competitive in a increasingly crowded photography market. “You have the ability to reproduce exactly what was said on the day and produce emotions through the choice of music and how things flow,” Sanders said about wedding videography. “It’s something I find really fascinating.” Sanders began offering video to clients in August 2016, separate from his photography services. It began as an experiment, shooting a few clips during a still shoot and editing them together with music and filters. The response was positive. Sanders purchased equipment, allowing him to shoot from different angles, control lighting and manipulate sound. A five to six minute clip, he said, can contain hundreds of two to three second shots. His packages start at $1,500 for a highlight reel, and higher packages including full-day documentary coverage. He presents the final package in full HD and is working to transition to 4K resolution in the near future.
Sanders has even started composing his own music by ear to add the an original mood and emotion to the fill. Eventually, Sanders plans to integrate the photography and videography businesses into one cohesive product. But as a solo act, Sanders knows he needs to concentrate on one service or the other, at present, to maintain a high quality. But costumer service is still key. Just like in his photography, Sanders lives by one philosophy for every wedding shoot. “You have to be a people person, that’s what I say. Growing up, there was always a stereotype where the wedding photographer would gather everybody up into a group and snap a picture with a big flash and you’re done. But these days it’s a lot more documentary style,” he said. Sanders had interest in photography early. At age 12, he practiced portrait and documentary-style work with his little sisters in the backyard using a little point and shoot digital camera. But being in a big family allowed Sanders to develop those people skills necessary to deal with the inevitable crying toddler in a tuxedo on wedding day. “I grew up with a large family. Celebrations Karaoke and DJ Services offers complete wedding entertainment By Justin Jagler Ray Johansen knows a thing or two about wedding entertainment. His business, Celebrations Karaoke and DJ Services, started in 1992 and plays 3040 weddings per year across Iowa. Johansen said a great wedding DJ does much more than just play music. Celebrations takes care of lighting, introductions, announcements, special dances, video projectors and more. “The thing about a DJ is they can make or break the whole reception,” Johansen said. “People are going to talk about for years to come if they had a good time or if they had a bad time. They’re not going to remember what they had to eat, but they’re going to remember if they had a good time.” Celebrations is a three-person operation that does karaoke on Friday nights in Jasper County and plays weddings on Saturday nights. At weddings, the company offers a diverse collection of music that dates back to the 1950s and includes today’s hits. Celebrations also has a smaller sound system that can be used to play music at ceremonies. Johansen said the company prides itself on interacting with the crowd, which includes both young and old. “If there’s kids there, we get kids involved. We bring blow-up microphones and blow-up guitars and necklaces and stuff like that for the kids,” he said. “We try to get the adults and kids involved. As it progresses through the evening, we try to play the crowd and see what kind of music they’re reacting to.” The idea is to keep people dancing and make sure everybody has a great time. For those who aren’t digging the tunes, Johansen said Celebrations keeps the loudness centered at the dance floor. If people want to talk, they can stay
near the back or the sides and the music won’t drown out the conversation. Johansen said a lot of DJs just starting out are relying on cheap equipment and an internet connection to provide wedding entertainment. Celebrations goes above and beyond. “We keep updated equipment. We bring backup equipment,” he said. “We buy our music. We have it all downloaded, ready to go before the ceremony. We work with the bride and groom to get a list of music they want. That way, we’re not depending on some internet access to be able to play those special songs for them because it’s a once in a lifetime event.” Celebrations gets 90 percent of its business from word of mouth, Johansen said. Friends and families that experienced a wedding done by Johansen will call up Celebrations when they need services. He said brides and grooms should always ask prospective DJs for referrals when shopping around. Johansen said brides and grooms who are shopping for entertainment should be asking DJs about lighting, equipment and crowd interaction before asking about cost. “We offer DJ bingo. We offer music
trivia. We offer some extra things we can do to make it more fun,” he said. “There’s a difference between emceeing a wedding and just playing music.” Johansen finds the job most rewarding when people come up after the reception and thank him for playing great music or playing a request. He enjoys the feeling that he made their day special. “It’s not just about going out and making extra money on the weekends,” he said. “It’s about helping people have the best day of their life, which is usually a one-time event. That’s what they’re paying us to do — to make that day the best day that it can be.”

DeVyne Solutions offers relaxing atmosphere for brides to be Stylists have 34 years of combined experience Brides looking to be pampered from head to toe can find a relaxing atmosphere at DeVyne Solutions in Newton. The hair salon and spa offers 34 years of combined experience between four talented and unique stylists. The whole bridal party can find what they are looking for, including, up-dos, makeup, manicures and pedicures and waxing. Stylists Wendy Cannon, Misty Henderson, Lori Osborn and Brooke Breckenridge have been building their clientele in Newton long before they moved into their current location at 601 W. 12th St. S. last August. The stylists have worked at several salons in Newton, such as EClips, Modern Edge and The Mane Event, before forming DeVyne Solutions. Henderson said the three other stylists are not only her co-workers but they are also her friends. “We have known each other for years,” Henderson said of Breckendridge. “And I met Wendy in beauty school,” Henderson said. Henderson said all of the stylists are also longtime Newton residents. The owner of DeVyne Solutions, Connie Ertl, told Cannon about the available space is located inside of the former Newton Country Club and she couldn’t pass it up. “Connie owns Spinal Solutions next door, and she let us know about the space available,” Henderson said. Henderson said they liked the space because it was spacious and relaxing and offered a lot of parking. Each stylist is responsible for taking their own appointments, as there isn’t an on-site receptionist who takes phone calls. “Walk-ins are welcome but appointments are preferred,” Henderson said. “We work with our own schedules.” The stylists are also willing to go within a 50 mile radius for weddings to provide services for brides and the bridal party.
“We are up for new ideas, and we don’t just go by the book,” Osborn said
Get to know the stylists Misty Henderson Henderson works six days as week at DeVyne Solutions, but she doesn’t let that get in the way of her family time. “I am very family oriented,” Henderson said. “I have three kids and four step-kids, and my family time comes first.” Henderson has also done hair at a local nursing home for more than 10 years. Brooke Breckenridge Breckenridge said her favorite part of her job at DeVyne Solutions is color correcting. Breckenridge is from Newton and has two boys. Breckenridge has also done hair at a local nursing home for five years. Wendy Cannon Cannon is a full-time mom and a part-time stylist. “I have a 9-year-old that keeps me pretty busy,” Cannon said. Cannon said her favorite thing to do at the salon is updos for special events. Lori Osborn Osborn is beginning her cosmetology career at DeVyne Solutions. After she finished beauty school, she was eager to start building her clientele. Osborn said she enjoys doing up-dos and color correcting. DeVyne Solutions also sells hair accessories, purses and Tyra makeup and skin care. The salon is open 8:30

Couple brews dream wedding at
Baxter Bar
By Anthony Victor Reyes Everyone has heard countless stories about someone finding their soulmate at a bar. But one Marshall County couple transformed this casual meeting place into the wedding venue of their dreams. On Oct. 5, 2013, Les and Shirley Tempel got married at the Baxter drinkery, Cadillac Jack’s. The reason why the couple chose to be wedded in a catina and not a chapel was simple — it was the place they fell in love. “It was a dark, dark Wednesday,” Les joked. “I was lucky, let’s put it that way. Maybe, we were lucky.” It was a typically Wednesday “Bike Night” at the Baxter pub, 106 N. Main St. A local band was playing music. Beer was flowing. The bar was flooded with people.
Due to the lack of seating, Les removed the seat and backrest of his hog and attached it to a tree. Shortly after, Shirley walked up to him. The two knew each other for 30 years but were previously in relationships with other people. That “dark, dark” evening, they were both single and ready to mingle. “Well, (Les) was talking to a couple of other young ladies. I thought he had a girlfriend. I went up to him and said, ‘You’re going to get in trouble.’ He said, ‘No I’m not.’ I said, ‘Your girlfriend isn’t going to be very happy.’ He said, ‘I don’t have a girlfriend,’” Shirley said. “I said, ‘Oh, so you’re available.’ That’s how it all started.” From then on, Cadillac Jack’s has been a special place for the couple. They became regulars at the bar, made a lot friends and fell in love. It was only natural that after Shirley popped the
question, they decided to get hitched at the place where their relationship began. “We talked about it one night,” Shirley said. “I thought it would be cool to be married (at Cadillac Jack’s) since this where we hooked up, and this is where we hung out.” The couple said Joan and Regan Wade, the owners of the Baxter bar, were obliged to fulfill their request. “We approached Joan to ask if it was possible. The bar was more than accommodating,” Les said. “We had it dolled up.” With a few personal modifications, Les and Shirley transformed the bar into their dream wedding venue. Shirley placed hanging mason jar candles on the trees around the patio.

Temple | 13 She also created centerpieces with mason jars filled with lemons and flowers. Les made an arbor from branches, and his childhood church allowed him to borrow a trailer full of chairs. “It was a big deal,” Les said. “It took a long time to get everything ready.” Shirley’s co-worker made the couple a cupcake tree, and the owners of Cadillac Jack’s covered the rest. “Joan and Reagan provided the meat ... we had all kinds of good food,” Shirley said. “(Joan) hooked us up with Pastor Scott Greene of The Least of Saints Ministry in Newton. We chatted with him. It was the perfect spot.” On day of their wedding, Les, sporting a black, button-down shirt, and a black and yellow striped tie, pulled up
at the bar on his Harley. Around 70 of their friends and family gathered on the patio. Shirley, wearing a yellow dress and a black shrug, walked down the aisle, accompanied by her daughters, Andrea Towne and Stacey Bockes. The couple said their vows and kissed in front of the tree where they originally reconnected. The rest is history. “I’ve never been happier in my life. She is above and beyond any of my expectations. She has been ever since day one. Looking back, I wouldn’t have changed a thing,” Les said. “My favorite moment was when we had our first married kiss. I just melted.” Three years later, the couple and the bar cherish that eventful day. According to Joan Wade, a plaque with the couple’s initials still hangs on the tree

where they started their relationship and said their vows. “I love these two,” Wade said. “I would host a wedding anytime.” The couple said they encourage anyone planning a wedding to be creative when deciding their wedding venue. They said the most important aspect of the wedding is not necessarily where you get married, it is who you choose to spend the rest of your life with. “Les is awesome. We are best friends. There hasn’t been one of my friends that didn’t say they haven’t seen me so happy,” Shirley said. “You got to think outside the box. I didn’t want a wedding that everybody does.
