Message from the Mayor

Bloomingdale continues to move forward with strategic redevelopment, thoughtful infrastructure investment, and a strong commitment to supporting local businesses and fostering long-term economic vitality. Our progress reflects careful planning, financial discipline, and the pride and partnership as well as community spirit that define our Village.

One of the most transformative initiatives underway is The Grove, the redevelopment of the former Stratford Square Mall site. With demolition now complete, this long-anticipated mixed-use development represents a bold reimagining of the heart of Bloomingdale. Planned features include lakeside dining, entertainment venues, yearround community events, and the future home of Bloomingdale Yard. The Grove is envisioned as a vibrant, community-centered destination that will create new opportunities for retailers, restaurateurs, and residents while strengthening our local economy, supporting existing businesses, and creating a welcoming gathering place.

The Village has also taken important steps to guide the future of the former Indian Lakes hotel property. After acquiring the site in early 2025 to ensure local control, the Village Board explored every viable opportunity to attract new hospitality investment. Following those efforts, we amended our zoning regulations to allow consideration of a thoughtfully designed, low-density residential neighborhood. We are now evaluating proposals that will transform this

long-neglected property into an asset that enhances surrounding neighborhoods and supports long-term economic stability.

This spring, the Village will open its newly completed Open Space redevelopment project, delivering critical stormwater improvements that address long-standing flooding concerns. In addition to strengthening infrastructure, the project provides new recreational features, including a scenic multiuse path and naturalized pond areas. Investments like these enhance quality of life while reinforcing Bloomingdale’s attractiveness as a place to live and do business.

Our retail corridors continue to grow and thrive, with upcoming additions including Andy’s Frozen Custard, Dave’s Hot Chicken, Qdoba Grill, Pazzi di Pizza, and two 7Brew locations. Supporting local commerce remains essential to maintaining a prosperous community, and I encourage residents and visitors alike to shop and dine locally.

Together with the Bloomingdale Village Board of Trustees, Vince Ackerman, Bill Belmonte, Frank Bucaro, Patrick Shannon, Dan Vitacco, and Judi Von Huben, I look forward to continuing our partnership with the Bloomingdale Chamber of Commerce and advancing our shared commitment to economic vitality and the Village’s motto of “Growth with Pride.”

The Bloomingdale Park District is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for residents through exceptional parks, programs, and recreation experiences. Serving families, seniors, youth, and local businesses, the Park District provides safe, welcoming spaces where recreation, wellness, and connection thrive.

With more than a dozen neighborhood parks, playgrounds, walking paths, athletic fields, and open green spaces, the Park District is committed to maintaining and improving community infrastructure that promotes healthy lifestyles and multigenerational engagement. Recent enhancements—including new playgrounds, expanded walking paths, and pickleball courts—reflect continued investment in accessible recreation and neighborhood connectivity.

cultural arts, fitness, special events, and seasonal community celebrations. Approximately 75% of program registrations are generated through the Park District’s mobile app, demonstrating its commitment to convenient, technology-driven service for residents.

There are a wide number of Bloomingdale Chamber and community events to enjoy throughout the year from summer concerts and ice cream socials to Halloween happenings and holiday tree light ceremonies.

But among all of the special things to do in town, why not add delicious culinary cuisine to the list, too? Mark your calendars to attend the celebration of this year’s Bloomingdale Restaurant Week on July 12-18, 2026. Our local restaurants take great pride in their menus and are wonderful community partners who support local organizations, not for profits, and school fundraisers.

Take time to taste, try, and enjoy specially-themed menus, unique dishes, and culinary creativity from proud, talented chefs at local restaurants. It’s a great way to support and “give back” to them, too.

The Bloomingdale area is undoubtedly rich in a wide variety of savory delights that bring the best flavors of familiar American, Italian, Mexican, Asian, and Indian dishes along with other delicious global offerings right here close to home.

According to Chris Karountzos, co-

owner of ANYWAY’S American Grill & Pub, who also serves as the 2026 Chair of the Bloomingdale Chamber, plans are underway to make this year’s Restaurant Week as tasty and popular as ever.

Local restaurants will create exclusive special offers to entice the community to come out and visit them during this exciting event week. Previous restaurant specials included special menus; unique 3-course meal deals; percentage off specials; or enticing giveaways.

“During Bloomingdale Restaurant Week, patrons can grab a “Restaurant Passport” at participating locations,” says Karountzos. “All you have to do is show your passport to your server at the time of ordering. We’re all

Open-Air Retail District Taking Shape at Former Stratford Square Mall

The excitement and transformation of the former Stratford Square Mall is now underway with the redevelopment of the property into The Grove at Bloomingdale.

With the mall’s demolition complete, the 75-acre site is now paving its way to become an openair retail and entertainment district with 280 residential units providing a bright future, new life and vibrancy for the community.

The Village of Bloomingdale purchased the once busy 1.3 million-square-foot Stratford Square Mall and acquired nearly all the parcels in 2024. In December 2025 details were unveiled showcasing its vision and plan for the dynamic new $78 million mixed-used development.

The Village is working with Segovia Partners, Gravity Architecture & Design, Peak Construction and Christopher B. Burke Engineering to redevelop the site.

Sean Gascoigne, Director of Community and Economic Development, Village of Bloomingdale, says he’s been busy overseeing the first steps of public utilities on the site.

“There’s a lot preparation going on right now on the site and under the road including utilities and water lines. With all of the changes underway, Kohl’s Department Store remains in business on the property.”

These improvements will set the pace for the site that will eventually include the retail space around open gathering spaces to include a lawn for outdoor concerts and events, a man-made lake, a walkup bar, and the 280 residential units.

“The Bloomingdale Yard, a 100,000-square-foot indoor sports and family recreation venue, will be The Grove’s first tenant,” said Gascoigne, “with a start this spring and a planned opening in 2027.” The facility will offer a variety of amenities, including a full-service

childcare center, after-school sports, birthday party packages and an interactive playroom for young children. The Yard is a familyoriented facility with 3 successful operations at the Westmont Yard and Naperville Yard in Illinois and the Milwaukee Yard in Wisconsin. The Illinois locations attract approximately 200,000 visitors annually.

“Of course, there are 100% growing pains with construction and building the site,” notes Gascoigne, “but even with that magnitude our Mayor Franco Coladipietro has maintained and insisted on complete transparency so our residents are in the know.”

The years and dreams of transformation for the site have begun and in the next five to seven years, The Grove at Bloomingdale will be a premier location for dining, shopping, entertainment, and residential living in the heart of Bloomingdale.

Lake Park Business Advisory Council Kicks Off

Connecting With the Next Generation of

Leaders

Today’s students are tomorrow’s business and community leaders. The Bloomingdale Chamber of Commerce and its members strongly believe in their potential and have a successful ongoing partnership with Lake Park High School that is beneficial to all concerned.

The Chamber has had a longtime relationship with the school for student career internships. As a result of the pandemic in 2020, the program hit the brakes and was paused until several years ago when a steering committee composed of chamber members re-launched the internship program with Kevin Jones, curriculum leader for career, technical and fine arts education at Lake Park High School. He has been with Lake Park since the 2002-03 school year and has seen the program evolve over the years.

Zach Greenberger of Aegis Construction Group, who serves as the 2026 chair of the Bloomingdale Chamber Board of Directors and part of the Business Advisory Council, was eager to get involved to help advise Lake Park on curriculum and programs and promote student internships.

“Our goal is to do all we can to connect students to be involved in learning about a career path that is of interest to them,” says Greenberger.

In turn, Jones is more than happy to assist his students to get early exposure to a career. “An internship is a test drive to see if something they really want to pursue,” he said. “This way students have a better understanding of what they want to do next - college, work, military - saving families money in tuition and headaches/ heartaches. From my experience and many professionals I have spoken to, the best learning experiences are on the job learning experiences in the workplace. The career internship program adds value either way, students love it and know what to expect moving forward, or students don’t really like it which gives them further direction on their next step. Now, with purpose.”

Greenberger notes that Aegis has hosted internships and the “Chamber works hard to keep the piggy bank refilled with companies who are willing to have students work at their business for anywhere from 4-8 hours per week.”

“We have internship classes that run in the fall and the spring and are looking to run something over the summer to provide more opportunities,” adds Jones. “Shadow experiences with shorter timelines are also something we are exploring.”

Both Greenberger and Jones agree that meeting local business owners has a positive effect on students. Lake Park hosts a “Business Spotlight” event that hosts a panel of 3 business professionals who speak to an audience of students about their own experiences.

“Last year’s event was extremely well received and we had dynamite speakers,” notes Jones. Students were able to speak to the panelists composed of Nancy O’Leary, Custom Direct, Inc; Michael Hovde Jr., Hovde and Tufo Law and Bloomingdale Township Supervisor; and Joe Falco, President of Fruitful Yield Health Foods.

Jones said that the Chamber’s Business Advisory Council helped find speakers and shaped what the panel would look like. “They were invaluable in supporting this event for our students,” he said.

“Throughout all this work, Cindy Allston, Bloomingdale Chamber President/CEO, has been an invaluable resource to support this work.”
