No one to be charged in death But 9 charged in incident; 2 with hate crime BY CHRISTI WARREN
OREGON – No one will be directly charged in the August death of Oregon teen Jon Williams, Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock said Wednesday. “We’re not going to be able to file a charge against anybody in Jon’s death,� Rock said. “We don’t have anything that would allow us to successfully prosecute that.� But nine people were charged Wednesday with crimes related to the party, during which Williams was hit and later died. Two of those nine were charged with a hate crime. Facing hate crime charges are Justin Coltrain, 33, of Mount Morris, one count, and Matthew Steder, 22, three counts. Prosecutors charged Coltrain and Steder with hate crimes because they made racial slurs during the incident, Rock said. Such charges are rare in Ogle County, he said. Bond was set at $100,000 for Coltrain, who also was charged with battery. He was in the Ogle County Jail on Wednesday afternoon, but was transferred to the Whiteside County Jail later in the day. On multiple occasions Wednesday and Thursday, people who answered the phones at the Ogle County

Jail told Sauk Valley Media reporters that no information would be given about the people arrested Wednesday. Reporters were told to call the state’s attorney’s office on Monday. Steder also was charged with aggravated battery and two counts of battery. Panel members hear information about the victim’s death, and they decide the manner of death. The cause of Williams’ death already had been ruled to be “blunt trauma of the head due to a fall as a result of a physical altercation.� The official manner of Williams’ death, the jury decided, was “homicide (involuntary manslaughter).�

“In this particular case, they felt that even though there was a confrontation with a lot of people, where there were a lot of people fighting, someone punched [Williams] in the face, which caused him to fall to the ground, which caused a head injury, which caused his death,� Jon Fiduccia said. STERLING – A Mount Morris man arrested and charged with a hate crime Wednesday has been transferred from the Ogle County Jail to the Whiteside County Jail, but authorities aren’t saying why. Justin Coltrain, 33, was charged with a hate crime and battery and was being held on $100,000 bond. Coltrain told Sauk Valley Media on Thursday that not long after he was placed in a cell with four other men in the Ogle County Jail, he was assaulted, taken to a hospital for a CT scan, then transferred to the Whiteside County Jail in Morrison. Ogle County Sheriff Michael Harn did not return multiple calls from SVM seeking comment Thursday. A call
to Whiteside County Sheriff Kelly Wilhelmi also was not returned. But a person at the Whiteside County Jail confirmed that Coltrain was brought there Wednesday evening. Coltrain’s charges resulted from an Aug. 10 fight at a party in Oregon, during which Jon Williams, 18, of Oregon, was hit and died a day later. Eight others were charged Wednesday, one of them also with three counts of a hate crime. None of Wednesday’s charges were for Williams’ death. On Wednesday, Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock said Coltrain and Matthew Steder, 22, were charged with hate crimes because they made racial slurs during the incident. Coltrain, who denies
that he made racial slurs, was placed in a cell in Ogle County with four black inmates, he said, after requesting he not be because of the hate crime charge. According to Coltrain, about 5 p.m. a local TV station previewed its news broadcast and included Coltrain’s arrest and charges, which initiated a confrontation and fight with the other inmates. Coltrain sustained a black eye, several bumps on his forehead and the back of his head, bruised ribs, and had a ringing in his ears, he said. Jail personnel responded to his calls for help, he said, about a minute after the fight started. Coltrain is due in court Monday, he said.
MORRISON – Three potential state’s witnesses in Nicholas Sheley’s upcoming murder trial have objected to cameras being allowed in the courtroom during their testimonies. A hearing on the objections will begin at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 16 in Whiteside County Court. On June 13, the court first heard a motion for extended media coverage, to which Whiteside County State’s Attorney Trish Joyce had no objection. It was decided then that any objections filed by witnesses would be handled later. “My concern about coverage of proceedings is generally in regard to pretrial matters, and only if that

‘I’m so happy to be here’ Homebound woman gets out for a Thanksgiving feast with family, friends BY DAVID GIULIANI
STERLING – Bobbie Mae Harts doesn’t get out much these days. In the past year, she has left the house for two doctor’s appointments. And that’s it.
On Thanksgiving, though, the longtime Sterling resident took part in a feast with family and friends at the Sterling Township’s Center for Youth. She and her husband, Frank Harts, showed up about 3:30 p.m. Last year, Bobbie Mae, 75, suffered a stroke and heart attack,
while working at a theater. The man grabbed him. It came to blows. “That was enough for people to kill you in those days,� Ted said. Frank heard that a bunch of white men were looking for him. He left the state, went to Sterling and later married Bobbie Mae. Since last year’s stroke and heart attack, Ted said, Bobbie Mae has hurt every day. Still, he said, “she’s always happy, with a smile on her face.� Sure enough, a smile stayed on her face when she arrived at the Center for Youth. The temperature was about 30 degrees, but that didn’t seem to matter to Bobbie Mae. “It doesn’t feel cold because I’m so happy to be here.�

When she arrived at the Center for Youth, family and friends went outside to greet her. Her grandson, Jeremiah Harts, 12, opened her car door and told her, “Happy Thanksgiving!� “We decided a couple of days ago that we should go to this,� Frank, 77, told a reporter. The Hartses’ son, Ted, 51, has written a book about his parents’ younger years in Shelby, Miss., where they grew up in the Jim Crow era. They are black, so they encountered much prejudice back then. In the mid-1950s, Frank got into an argument with a white man

If you’re tempted to skip the egg glaze, don’t. It lends the pastry a luscious golden crackle, but also is oddly affirming. Taking the time to paint the whole surface of the pastry with care, instead of a slapdash splash across the top, is what cooking with love is all about. Since you’ve come this far, cut a few leaf shapes from the dough scraps to make your pies even more appetizing. Painting the leaves with a bit of paprika-tinted egg yolk takes about as long as reading this story, and guarantees an “ooh-ahh� reaction at the table that makes every minute worthwhile. And this is before your diners have even taken a bite!

ow is when the menu changes. It’s when pasta with fresh tomatoes and basil retires to also-ran status, when the prospect of gravy makes our mouth water. Foods of fall and winter are all about comfort, about settling in, about spending a bit more time in the kitchen because the tennis nets at the park have been packed up for the season. It’s time for pot pie. Time, that is, for really good pot pie – which some people have never experienced, if their experience is limited to most grocery freezer cases. Sure, college lore of the 19-cent pot pie upended into a pot of rice retains a certain nostalgia, and surely helped shift funds to the beer budget. Convenience is a contemporary argument, but there’s a tipping point between saving time and sitting down to a decent meal. We’ve tipped in favor of making homemade pot pie, with a crust that’s both flaky and flexible, and a filling that you can customize to your heart’s content as long as you honor the final proportions. Turkey is our protein of choice, because such leftovers are on the horizon. But with half-breasts more available, you can roast just enough turkey within an hour to make six pies. Swap in chicken, or go vegetarian with more of the pot-pie trinity: potatoes, carrots and peas. Experiment with other vegetables, such as turnips, rutabaga, pearl onions, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, corn or peppers. We favor the classic trio, but add a twist and some texture with some crumbled bacon. We won’t lie – pot pies from start to finish take a little time. The pastry comes together quickly, but must rest in the refrigerator for an hour. The vegetables need to be par-cooked for a few minutes to make sure they’ll cook through in the oven. The gravy is

You’ll need only half for 6 individual pot pies, so freeze the remaining dough for a single-crust pie, or future pot pies. (The recipe also makes a 9- to 10-inch doublecrust pie of any kind.) Pot pies may be assembled 4 hours in advance. Cover and refrigerate until it’s time to bake. 2 1/2 cup flour 1 tsp. salt 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold, cut in 16 pieces 1 egg yolk Generous 1/2 cup milk, or more if needed In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. With a pastry blender, cut the butter into the flour until the larger remaining chunks are the size of small peas. Drop the egg yolk into a liquid measuring cup and add milk until you reach exactly 2/3 cup (you’ll use about 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon). Mix the egg yolk and milk with a fork until combined, then add it to the flour mixture all at once. Mix the dough with a fork until you can gather most of it into a ball. This is most easily done in the bowl, like packing a large
