Smiddy way ahead in fundraising Demmer, Bivins have safe seats BY DAVID GIULIANI
DIXON – State Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, is far outpacing his Republican rivals in fundraising. As of Sept. 30, Smiddy, who represents Whiteside County, had $86,944 in his coffers. He raised $95,000 in the latest quarter, July through September. He spent $47,410 during that time. Republicans Jim Wozniak and Jeff McKinley, both of whom are assistant state’s attorneys in Rock Island County, have announced they are running in the March GOP primary for the 71st House District. The 71st District is considered a battleground. Last Novem-
ber, Smiddy beat Republican incumbent Rich Morthland, who defeated Democrat Dennis Ahern in 2010. Before that, Mike Democrat Mike Smiddy Boland held the seat. As of Sept. 30, McKinley had $826 in his account and Wozniak, $955, according to their campaign finance reports filed with the state Board of Elections. Although the Republicans’ totals are low now, the race will likely become more expensive. Smiddy’s totals indicate he expects a battle. Most legislative seats in Illinois go unopposed, with incumbents virtually assured of victory. Wozniak said he and McKinley will find more success in raising funds when they become official candidates in

December. “I’ve been told by multiple sources that the 71st District will be very targeted by the Republicans and Republican organizations,� Wozniak said. “There will be money coming to the race.� “Since it is the primary, a lot of Republican donors are seeing how it shakes out,� said Michael Coyne, McKinley’s campaign manager. “I combed through [Smiddy’s] report. He didn’t have a single donation under $150 from any individuals. We have the grassroots. He wants to buy the seat back. Good luck.�

Smiddy’s campaign manager, Ben Head, said that because of politics these days, Smiddy believes he must raise money to be competitive. The last election, Head said, indicated the district was “rather Democratic,� but that could have been because Barack Obama was at the top of the ballot. Other districts won’t see much competition, if at all. Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, who represents a solidly GOP district, received just $2,250 during the past quarter, though he has $25,400 in his coffers. No one has announced an intention to run against him. Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, who also is expected to run unopposed, had no contributions in the last quarter. He had $17,360 in his account Sept. 30. For Smiddy during the past quarter, nearly two-thirds of his donations – $59,500 – came from unions, most
of which represent public employees. On Aug. 29, he received $49,000 from the political action committee of the Illinois Education Association, a teachers union. The 36th Senate District will also likely see a heated battle. Sen. Mike Jacobs, D-East Moline, is running for reelection in the district, which includes Whiteside County. Earlier this month, after the campaign finance reporting deadline, Moline firefighter Neil Anderson announced that he would run for the Republican nomination. Jacobs said he feared the race could become another $3 million contest. “That’s a part of the business that I really don’t like – raising money. It’s ridiculous,� he said. “I wished we could sign an agreement to talk to voters and not to spend a dime. Face it, the national Republicans and the tea party will pour money into this race.�

Former resident meets queen 1982 Amboy grad teaches in Scotland BY DAVID GIULIANI
Former Sublette resident Kent Walter has mingled with royalty. About a year ago, Walter, a 1982 Amboy High School graduate who is teaching at the International School of Aberdeen, Scotland, was approached by the school’s director with the idea of writing to Buckingham Place to see whether the school could dedicate its theater in Queen Elizabeth’s name. “I laughed and told him to ‘Go for it!’ I forgot about it since,� Walter writes in an email to Sauk Valley Media. But on Aug. 14, Walter found out that the palace had approved the request and that it was sending a royal to dedicate it. “I can only imagine my face when he said the queen herself was making the dedication,� Walter wrote. The director then told Walter: “By the way, I will introduce you to her majesty, then you will introduce the rest of your staff. Also, you will need to
have a maximum 10-minute performance for Her Majesty that day. The palace is requesting it.� Walter’s department put together a presentation including drama, art, and instrumental and vocal music. On Oct. 1, at the end of the performance for the monarch, Walter was introduced to the queen and shook her hand. “I remember nothing of the conversation, but recall her being very gracious about her visit,� Walter wrote. “Her majesty was nothing but smiles at meeting our students and about her visit at the International School of Aberdeen.� Walter studied music education at Illinois State University. He has also taught at international schools in Ethiopia, Kenya and Venezuela. His parents, Byron and Marilyn Walter, now live in Lost Nation, near Dixon.

Dixon gets new sporting goods store Hibbett slated to open in November BY MATT MENCARINI
DIXON – Hibbett Sporting Goods is coming to Dixon. The Alabama-based company will open a store at 1620 Miller St., in late November, the company announced in a news release. The Dixon location expects to hire eight full- and part-time employees. There are more than 850 Hibbett Sporting Goods stores across the country, with a focus on the Midwest, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.
The stores are typically 5,000 square feet and located in strip malls and enclosed malls in small to midsized markets, according to the news release. There are nearly two dozen Hibbett locations in Illinois, including Sterling, Freeport and Moline, according to the company’s website. The new Hibbett store will join other Sauk Valley sporting goods stores like Downtown Sports in Dixon, Finish Line in Sterling, Rigler’s Shooting and Sports Supply in Rock Falls and Woods Sporting Goods in Oregon.

Additional arrest made in pipe bomb incident Varga: Another bomb might have been set off on the same night BY CHRISTI WARREN
DIXON – The Lee County Sheriff’s Department made an additional arrest Wednesday in connection with the pipe bomb found on two men near Dixon Correctional Center early Sunday. Stephen E. Long, 27, of Dixon, was arrested and charged with unlawful use of a weapon after authorities received a tip that he was with Zachary W. Chaffer, 31, of Dixon,
and Scott R. Williams, 32, of Sterling, when they bought the bomb. Lee County Sheriff John Varga said it appeared that another pipe bomb had been set off in a dumpster at the time. Chaffer and Williams were arrested early Sunday morning after Lee County sheriff’s deputies received a call from the prison about two suspicious individuals. Upon investigating, Varga said they found Chaffer and
Williams to be in possession of a pipe bomb which the men said was purchased near the Beanblossom parking lot late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. The two men said they were walking by the prison en route to a party, Varga said. The device was later detonated safely by the Winnebago County Bomb Unit. According to Varga, the motive is still unclear.
“We’re still working on it to see what the plan was to do with [the bomb], if anything,� he said. “I’m not really sure what they were doing with it, or going to do with it.� Chaffer and Williams remain in Lee County Jail on $50,000 bond. Long’s bond was set at $5,000; he bonded out Thursday afternoon. All three men will appear in court on Oct. 30.

Opponents invoke God at rally SPRINGFIELD (AP) – Busloads of gay marriage opponents held their own rally outside the Capitol Wednesday, pledging to reverse any headway in the push for state legislation that would allow same-sex weddings. Pastors, Christian activists and others addressed a crowd clustered on the first floor of the Capitol rotunda, some peering down from the second and third floor rails, a day after gay marriage proponents held their own event to urge lawmakers to approve it. “Are we going to stay silent and let this happen?� Christian activist Jim Finnegan asked the crowd. “Defend Marriage Lobby Day� – sponsored by the Illinois Family Institute began Wednesday with a morning prayer service outside the state Capitol. The secretary of state’s police put number of attendees at 2,500 – slightly smaller than the estimate from Tuesday’s event. Attendees began the day outside with a prayer service in front of the Lincoln statute, in front of which a large
wooden cross printed with “God Abhors Civil Unions� had been placed. Some attendees carried pictures of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, and posters emphasizing their belief that marriage should be between a man and a woman. “Kids do better with a mom and a dad,� one sign read. Pastors from several of the area’s black mega-churches are trying to help blunt gay marriage advocates’ work to clinch a handful more “yes� votes to secure passage of the measure in the House. Same-sex marriage legislation passed the state Senate in February but has not been called in the House. Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan said just weeks ago that about a dozen votes were still needed for the legislation’s passage. However, gay rights activist Rick Garcia said Tuesday that the current count of “yes� votes was around 55 – progress that Wednesday’s rally attendees pledged to work to erode.
Sterling man jailed for child abuse Police say he injured 5-week-old daughter BY CHRISTI WARREN
STERLING – A Sterling man was arrested Thursday after prosecutors say he physically abused his 5-week-old daughter in September, sending her to the hospital with “significant injuries,� including rib fractures and brain hemorrhaging. Police say that on Sept. 16, authorities responded to a call about an infant who was found unresponsive and not breathing at a home in the 1800 block of Locust Street. She was flown to a Rockford hospital, where she was stabilized. On Thursday, Terrance L. Jordan, 21, of Sterling, was charged with aggravated battery to a child. Brownell said that Jordan’s account of what happened
was inconsistent with the injuries the infant sustained. He also said that doctors were able to determine that the injuries weren’t accidental. In court documents filed Thursday, prosecutors say that Jordan “squeezed [his daughter] with such force that her ribs were fractured� and that by “causing her head to hit the floor with such force, she suffered an intracranial hemorrhage.� According to police, it was determined during the monthlong investigation that the abuse happened more than once. In August 2012, Jordan pleaded guilty to aggravated battery in a public place and domestic battery; in 2010, he pleaded guilty to burglary. He is in Whiteside County Jail on $500,000 bond.

Play with noir-hued ingredients for a grown-up seasonal dinner

alloween menus, if there are such things beyond raiding the kids’ plastic jack-o’lanterns, tend to get all punny and cutesy with the likes of boo-berry cupcakes, wormy pasta dishes, and, always, some sort of hard-cooked egg that is supposed to be a bloodshot eye. Har-har, indeed. This year, do Halloween in a more elegant way. Make a meal starring foods that are as black as they can possibly be to create a noir-hued menu designed to raise eyebrows – deliciously. What’s interesting about these inky dark ingredients is that any accent color in a dish – the orangey pink of a baby octopus in a tangle of squid ink pasta, say, or the green tip of an asparagus spear amid the grains of a bowl of forbidden rice – will stand out dramatically against the black. There’s much to discover in black foods, once you get past the innate fear of mortality that color has long symbolized – or maybe embrace that; it is Halloween, after all. Savor the black olive: decadently deep and winey. Be surprised at the sturdy nuttiness of black rice. Savor the slipperiness of squid ink linguine or the plushness of long-simmered black beans. Then there’s the electric tartness of fresh blackberries and the visual shock of ice cream made from black sesame seeds. And don’t forget black licorice or nori seaweed. Here are some ideas (and a couple of recipes) to bring the darkness of the night indoors.
Squid ink pasta: Garnish with chopped tomatoes and sauteed squid or octopus (see recipe); sauce the pasta in a mustard cream, garnished with a spoonful or two of black caviar; pair black farfalle with poached lobster (a recipe idea from “The Scarpetta Cookbook� by Scott Conant). Black rice: Make a pilaf, cooking the rice with dried cherries, currants, and chopped mango; stir-fry with bits of fried egg, green onions, and tiny shrimp; wrap black rice tortillas around chicken in a mole sauce; toss cooked black rice in a sesame oil vinaigrette, topped with slivers of toasted nori and black radish rounds. Black olives: Stuff hard-cooked eggs with tapenade; make flatbread pizza topped with slivered Nicoise olives, sprigs of fresh rosemary, and a grating or two of Parmesan cheese; or serve olives seasoned with orange, garlic, and fennel (see recipe). Blackberries: Mortar the layers of a devil’s food chocolate cake with a blackberry jam, either your own or store bought; top an espresso-stained custard or chocolate pudding tart with rows of fresh blackberries; create a blackberry-lavender compote (recipe idea from “The Artisan Jewish Deli at Home� by Nick Zukin and Michael C. Zusman). Black lentils: Serve straight up to showcase these glistening beauties, or as a bed for a roast meat entree or vegetable saute. In a large bowl, toss together 1 pound brine-cured unpitted olives, the julienned zest and juice of 1 large orange, 3 crushed garlic cloves, ½ teaspoon ground fennel seed, a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes, and 2 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil. Pack the olives into a glass jar; marinate in the refrigerator, 3-4 days. Remove the garlic; serve. Olives will keep for several weeks in the refrigerator. Makes: 6 to 8 servings

Steam 1 bunch asparagus over simmering water in a covered saucepan until just tender, 5-7 minutes. Remove asparagus from the steamer so that it doesn’t overcook; set aside. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a small skillet over high heat. When the oil is hot, add 2 beaten eggs; scramble until cooked through, 4-5 minutes. Chop the eggs up with a spatula; set the pan aside. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. When the oil is hot, add 1 bunch green onions, thinly sliced; cook, 1 minute. Add 2 cups cold, cooked black rice and ½ cup cooked peas; cook, stirring, 1 minute.
