Santa Claus ... came to town The inaugural “Run for a Claus” event, a 5K run/walk fundraiser hosted by the Bureau County United Way on Saturday, took Santa away from the North Pole long enough to cheer on runners and direct a little traffic on South Main Street throughout the event. While the Princeton Police were on hand to make sure motorists kept an eye on runners/walkers, Santa took charge of the situation — even with the Princeton Police, pictured at right. Throughout November and December, there have been several Santa sightings in and around Bureau County. From special events held by a variety of organizations, to other activities where Santa came to listen to the wishes of Bureau County children. In the Wednesday, Dec. 21, edition of the Bureau County Republican, we will publish a host of “Santa Sightings” which we have collected throughout the season. Did your child/grandchild tell Santa his/her Christmas wishes? If so, we may be publishing a photo of him or her along with the Jolly Old Elf Himself. Live nativity set for Dec. 16, 17 and 18 WALNUT — The Walnut Community Bible Church will again host its annual live nativity. The three-evening event is set for 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 16, 17 and 18. The church is located at 125 Jackson St., Walnut. Pastor Eldon Cook said about 80 people/volunteers are involved in the event each night, which includes four different
scenes. Event-goers can choose to drive through the display, or they are also welcome to walk through it as well to get an up close and personal view. The event is free, and the public is welcome. Complete with a camel, donkeys, cows and sheep, this Christmas story event is a tradition at the church. Guests can also enjoy hot chocolate and cookies.

Ravioli dinner planned DALZELL — St. Thomas More Church in Dalzell will host a ravioli dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, in the church hall. More holiday hoopla Princeton Community Band and Bureau County Chorus will present ‘Sounds of the Season’ PRINCETON — The Princeton Community Band and the Bureau County Chorus will present “Sounds of the Season,” a concert of holiday-themed music, at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, in Princeton High School’s Sally Skinner Council Auditorium. This is the second year that these organizations have collaborated on a holiday concert. The Bureau County Chorus performance will include “Noel Fantasy,” “Grinch!,” “Christmastime Is Here” (from “A Charlie Brown Christmas”) and Eric Whitacre’s newest composition, “Glow.” The chorus is directed by Emily Stover, music teacher and junior high choir director for Princeton
Elementary Schools. Among the Princeton Community Band’s numbers will be “Still, Still, Still,” “Brazilian Sleigh Bells” and “The Sounds of Christmas.” The band is conducted by Brandon Stover, director of bands for Princeton Elementary Schools. New for this year, the band and choir will combine to perform of a medley of festive tunes to conclude the concert. Both the Princeton Community Band and the Bureau County Chorus are all-volunteer organizations. Admission to the concert is free, but donations will be gratefully accepted.

Petitions available PRINCETON — Candidates looking to run for a position in the April 4, consolidated election can file petitions between Dec. 12-19. Village/city candidates file with village/city clerks, and township candidates file with township clerks. Library, park and fire district candidates will file with the local secretary of the district. All school board candidates will need to file with Bureau County Clerk Kami Hieronymus. Candidates who still need to pick-up petition forms can do so from the local election official in each district. The county clerk’s office will accept school board candidate petitions from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The slightly rolling course is a one-mile loop to the east followed by three out and back runs of 10 miles. Showers are available. Pizza will be served following the run.
