Experiencing history History comes alive this weekend with the 16th annual Shadows of the Blue and Gray Civil War re-enactment at the City-County Park, north of Princeton. The twoday event begins at 10 a.m. Saturday with special events scheduled throughout the day until the park closes at 9 p.m. Shadows of the Blue and Gray will continue on Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m. and closing at 4 p.m. Spokesperson Randy Woodbury said this year’s event will be filled with the traditional favorite happenings like a visit from President and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln, period artisans and crafts, and Civil War battles. This weekend’s event will also include several new opportunities to enjoy, including a “Civil War: Did You Know” program for children and a special presentation on Illinois women during the Civil War, Woodbury said. BBB reports a sharp increase in debt collection scams CHICAGO — According to the BBB records, fake debt collection scams are on the rise. From September 2011-12, there were 782 complaints. From September 2012-13, there were 926, an 84 percent increase from the previous year. These types of scams can vary. In some instances, consumers are receiving calls stating they need to pay money for a loan they may have never had or to pay a higher amount for a loan that they do have. It can be difficult to distinguish a legitimate debt collector versus a scammer. However, there are a few red flags consumers should look for. • Calls seeking payment on a debt for a loan you don’t recognize. • Refusal by the caller to give you their own contact information. • Persistent request for personal financial or sensitive information. • High pressure tactics designed to scare you, by saying that you could get into legal trouble by not paying immediately. “If people call pretending to be debt collectors, consumers can be at high risk of identity theft,” said Steve J. Bernas, president/CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. “Consumers have to be cautious with these callers and must never give out personal information with people they do not know.” The BBB offers the following tips when dealing with a fake debt collector: • Ask the caller for contact information. Ask for

their name, name of company, street address and telephone number. • Tell the caller you refuse to discuss debt until you receive a written “validation notice,” which is a written notice of the amount of debt and your rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. • Stop speaking with the caller. • If you have the caller’s address, send a letter demanding him or her to stop contacting you. According to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, if debt collectors receive this letter in writing, they must stop calling you. • Don’t give personal information. If you don’t know exactly who you’re dealing with, never confirm sensitive information such as your bank account, credit card or Social Security numbers. Scammers use this information to commit identity theft. • Contact your creditor. If you actually are in debt but you think the debt collector calling isn’t legitimate, contact your creditor, using contact information from your personal online account. Your creditor is able to find out who the suspicious caller is and if they are authorized to collect a debt from you. • Report the call. Don’t hesitate to call the Better Business Bureau or your state Attorney General’s office. Illinois has its own debt collection laws, and these offices are able to help you determine your rights under your state’s laws. For more tips and information about scams, visit www.bbb.org.

Four no-fail tips for successful 21st Century parenting Raising well-adjusted children is not a game of chance For many parents, having children is the most significant reckoning in one’s lifetime. The birth of Anthony Sposato’s first child made him realize he had not taken full advantage of the opportunities presented to him in life. He had not been raised with all of the tools for turning opportunity into success, and he and his wife, Carol, determined to give their children a better chance to succeed. “I have heard it said that how your children turn out is a crap shoot. It’s a sad thing to believe that you have nothing to do with how successful your children will be as adults,” said Sposato. “Like just about all new parents, we had no formal training on how to raise children when our first was born. As a manager and later owner of my own business, I recognized a tragic lack of work ethic in the 20-somethings I worked with. I put much of the culpability on the parents, and I used my management skills to help raise my kids.” Sposato is the author of “Successful Parenting,” and offers four tips for raising well-adjusted children: • Start making necessary changes

ASAP. It all starts in the womb; as soon as you know you’re pregnant, it’s time for both Mom and Dad to start adjusting their lifestyle for the baby. That means implementing a consistent routine and forming better habits. If you know you eat poorly, or if you smoke, change those bad habits. They can not only hurt the child while it’s in the womb, he or she will grow up modeling them. • Create a healthy routine for your child. Children crave structure and therefore, routine. A consistent routine also takes the guesswork out of parents with busy schedules. This includes bathing, brushing teeth and talking or reading to your son or daughter. Don’t put a television in their room, and do not let them watch excitable programs before bed elsewhere in the house. Consistently eat dinner together at the table with no distractions. • Get control of yourself or you’ll never be able to control your children. The old joke, “Do as I say, not as I do,” simply doesn’t fly when trying to raise well-adjusted children. Children often pick up on what they see and not what we tell them. They are very sensitive to hypocrisy; if

you use profanity in front of them, how will they feel when you scold them for repeating what you’ve said? When telling them what is right and wrong, explain to them why that is so. • Teach your children to question and reason for themselves. Smart adults don’t simply accept the claims of others; they need reason and evidence to agree with any statement. Parents should emphasize to their children the importance of questioning claims and to reason for themselves. This will protect them from manipulation by others and help them better manage other aspects of their lives, including money. “If you have kids, then parenting is your most important job,” Sposato says. “It’s worth going the extra mile to be a better parent, for your child’s sake.” About Anthony Sposato: When Anthony Sposato had children, he was determined to provide them with opportunities that he did not have as a child. His three grown sons are among his proudest achievements. Sposato has worked in management for more than 30 years and currently owns a Jan-Pro franchise. Food court How about some fresh cinnamon rolls and coffee cakes on a weekend morning when you have a little extra time to make a great breakfast for the family? Nice and warm with a good cup of coffee ... I can almost smell them now!

Majestic Cinnamon Rolls 1 tablespoon active dry yeast 1/3 cup sugar 3/4 cup warm water 3/4 cup warm 2% milk 2 eggs 3 tablespoons butter, melted 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 4 1/2 to 5 cups all-purpose flour Filling 1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar 1/2 cup butter, melted 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon Topping 1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar 3/4 cup butter, melted 3 tablespoon half and half cream In a large bowl dissolve yeast and 1 tablespoon sugar in warm water. Add the milk, eggs, butter, salt, remaining sugar and 2 cups flour; beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough (dough will be sticky). Turn onto a floured surface, knead until smooth and elastic, about 6 to 8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Punch dough down. On a lightly floured surface, roll into an 18-by-12-inch rectangle. For filling: Combine brown sugar, butter and cinnamon; spread over rectangle to within 1/2 inch of edges. Roll up jelly roll style starting with a long side; pinch seam to seal. Cut into 1 1/2-inch slices. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, butter and cream; pour into a greased 13-by-9-inch baking dish. Place the rolls, cut-side down, in the brown sugar mixture. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes. Bake at 350° for 35 to 40 minutes or until golden brown. Cool in dish for 5 minutes. Invert onto a serving platter. Serve warm. Makes 1 dozen.

Cinnamon Swirl Coffee Cake Unflavored dried bread crumbs 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar 2 eggs, beaten, at room temperature 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup sour cream at room temperature 1 cup (4 ounces) chopped pecans or walnuts 2 tablespoons light brown sugar 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon Preheat oven to 350°. Butter 10-cup fluted tube pan. Coat pan with bread crumbs. Sift flour, baking powder, soda and salt into medium bowl. Beat butter in large bowl on high until smooth, 1 minute. Gradually beat in granulated sugar until fluffy, 3 minutes. Gradually beat in eggs, then vanilla. In thirds, alternating with sour cream, add flour, beat until smooth. Combine pecans, brown sugar and cinnamon. Spread about 1/3 batter in pan. Sprinkle in half of pecan mixture, leaving a 1/2-inch border of batter around outside

Coffee Cake Muffins 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 cup sliced almonds 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 3/4 cup butter, softened 1 1/4 cups sugar 3 large eggs 1 cup sour cream 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Preheat oven to 325°. Spray 2 12-cup muffin pans with non-stick cooking spray. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, almonds and cinnamon. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder and baking soda. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar at medium-high speed with an electric mixer until fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually add flour mixture, alternately with sour cream, beginning and ending with flour mixture, beating just until combined after each addition. Stir in vanilla. Spoon half of batter evenly into prepared muffin cups. Sprinkle half of brown sugar mixture evenly over batter. Spoon remaining batter evenly over brown sugar mixture. Pecan Streusel Coffee Cake

large bowl, whisk together, flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. In a second large bowl, beat butter and Splenda on medium speed until fluffy. Add eggs and egg whites, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. Reduce speed to low and alternately beat in flour mixture and yogurt beginning and ending with flour mixture. Spread half of the batter into prepared pan and sprinkle evenly with half of pecan mixture. Carefully spread remaining batter over top and sprinkle with remaining pecan mixture. Bake at 350° for 50 to 55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in cake comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack for 20 minutes. Gently remove side from pan. Run a small sharp knife around bottom and center and cool completely before removing from pan.

Cinnamon Roll Coffee Cake 1 17 1/2-ounce tube large refrigerated cinnamon rolls with cream cheese icing 2 8-ounce packages cream cheese softened 3 eggs 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup chopped pecans 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup quick cooking oats 1/4 cup packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 3 tablespoons butter, melted Whipped cream and additional ground cinnamon Unroll the tube of cinnamon rolls into one long rectangle. Press onto the bottom of a greased 13-by-9-inch baking dish. Seal perforations. Set aside icing packet from cinnamon rolls. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese, eggs, sugar and vanilla until smooth. Pour over crust. In a small bowl, combine the pecans, flour, oats, brown sugar and cinnamon, stir in butter. Sprinkle over cream cheese layer. Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Drizzle with contents of icing packet, let stand for 15 minutes before serving. If desired, serve with a dollop of whipped cream sprinkled with additional cinnamon.

Fletcher will perform selections from his new CD, an all-Grieg album in which he wrote the guitar transcriptions. Fletcher’s three recordings, “The Art of Classical Guitar,” “A Peter Fletcher Recital” and “Federico Mompou: Guitar Works,” have received critical acclaim. In demand as a performer in cultural venues throughout the country, Fletcher has been invited to give recitals for many years. He made his New York debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in Feb. 2007, returned in 2008 and 2009, 2010 and 2013 to a completely soldout audiences. Interests outside of music include reading and cross-country running. He lives in New York City. This program is made possible with funding from the Alwin C. Carus Trust.
