Music, music ...and more Music on Main SHEFFIELD — If you’re looking for a fun family activity that will cause everyone to leave with a smile on their face, you’ll want to head to Sheffield on Saturday, July 18, for the fifth annual Music on Main event. The festival is sponsored by Sheffield Pride. While music on Sheffield’s Main Street is the crux of this festival, the afternoon and evening holds much more than a beer tent and music. A host of new and renewed activities will encourage event-goers of all ages to get involved in the fun. The activities begin at 2 p.m., when children (adults can participate too) will enjoy a Wet and Wacky Race, where everyone will have fun with an obstacle course at Veterans-School Park filled with watery fun and pools of Jell-O. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m.; the event is sponsored by the Cornerstone Community Wellness Center. At 3 p.m., there will be water battles for the children at the Sheffield Fire Station. Later, there will also be a pie eating contest for adults and children. The winning adult will win $100, and there will be prizes for children in their respective age categories. A children’s pedal pull will also be part of the fun. The gates for the downtown Music on Main open at 5 p.m. The entrance fee is $6, and children 12 and under are free. A host of area food vendors will provide some great eats, and beer, wine and cocktails will be available. The actual music begins at 6 p.m. when the Lizzi Neal Band takes the stage with its rhythm and blues/bluesy rock and roll music. That band will be followed by Forgotten Highway, a country band that will play until midnight. The public is invited. IV Scene file photo

Z-Tour rides into ... and out of Princeton The fifth annual Z-Tour Bike Ride will pedal off Saturday, July 18. The event attracts bikers from all around the state and beyond for a chance to ride some of the best bike roads Northwest Illinois has to offer. Registered participates have the option to either bike a 10-mile, 30-mile, 50-mile, 65-mile or 100-mile route. The money raised for the event all benefit the Zearing Children Enrichment Center. To date, the event has raised $53,000 for the children’s center.

Taking a step or two back in time The 38th annual Ol’ Fashun Threshun Days event is set for Saturday and Sunday, July 18-19, at Albrecht’s Grove of Ohio, Ill. The location for the event is 10 miles north of Princeton and then one-half mile west off of Route 26, right at the S curve. There will be signs to guide you on where to turn off of Route 26. The Bureau Valley Antique Club sponsors the event, which includes the opportunity to take a step back in time to watch a wheat threshing demonstration, entertainment, food, children’s activities and more. The gate fee is $4 and is open to the public
Caravans celebrate the 30th anniversary of the I&M Canal National Heritage Area The Canal Corridor Association (CCA) will culminate its year-long celebration of the 30th anniversary of the nation’s first Heritage Area with three caravans along the I&M Canal. These three opportunities to explore the I&M Canal Area between Chicago and LaSalle will take place in August and highlight 20 locations unique to Illinois history, each including its own guided tour. “We are proud to offer these caravans as an opportunity to ‘taste’ the experiences available in the I&M Canal National Heritage Area,” said Ana Koval, AICP, president of the CCA. “It’s important for Illinois residents
to discover history and explore nature in their own backyard. We’re urging folks to fill their cars with friends and family, and join the CCA in a day of good, old-fashioned road trip fun.” Last fall, the CCA kicked off the 30th anniversary celebration with a twoday caravan that visited 15 different sites. This event was a tremendous success, and attracted more than 170 participants. This year’s one-day caravans will take place on three consecutive Saturdays, Aug. 8, 15 and 22. Registration is required, and can be completed by visiting www.canalcor. org, or by calling 815-2231851.
Scheduled stops will include the following locations and options: On Saturday, Aug. 8, the caravan starts with a tour of the canal’s eastern terminus at Origins Park, and will include a walking tour of Bronzeville, followed by a soul-food lunch at Pearl’s Place and a walking tour of the Pullman National Monument. At that point, everyone will hop back in their cars and head to the Chicago Portage National Historic Site in Lyons for a guided tour of Chicago’s Birthplace. The first caravan finishes with a cookout at the Santa Fe Prairie, an oasis of nature in an urban atmosphere and the birthplace of the Prairie Restoration move-
ment. The second caravan will take place the following Saturday, Aug. 15. The first stop, Isle a la Cache in Romeoville, will transport our “caravaners” back to the 1600’s when French fur traders first explored the area. From there it’s on to view the collection of photos and documents about the canal’s early history at the I&M Canal Adelmann Archives at Lewis University near Lockport. In nearby downtown Joliet, the caravans will take the walking tour that winds through the ruins of the old Joliet steel mill. After lunch there will be an exclusive, behind the scenes tour at Brandon Lock and Dam
in Joliet, followed by a visit to I&M canal locks 6 and 7, as well as the dam and locktenders house at Channahon State Park. The day finishes off with a tour of the historic Evergreen Cemetery in Morris. The third and final caravan will take place on Saturday, Aug. 22, beginning with a visit to the Carbon Hill School Museum, then on to a tour and hike through the breathtaking Goose Lake Prairie. At Gebhard Woods the group will learn about the management of the I&M Canal by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. After lunch, a “behind the scenes” tour of the Marseilles Hydroelectric plant, followed by
panoramic views of the Illinois River at Buffalo Rock State Park, will be featured. The final site of the third caravan will be a stop at the Illinois Waterway Center to witness the mighty waterway that was built to replace the I&M Canal. Afterwards, join the CCA for a cocktail party at the Lock 16 Center in downtown LaSalle celebrating the closing of the 30th anniversary year. I found some good Amish recipes, that sounded delicious and easy to do. Why not give a few a try to make a different meal for you and your family?
Poor Man’s Steak 2 pounds ground beef 1 cup cracker crumbs 1 cup milk 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 onion, chopped Mix all ingredients together. Pat mixture out to 1/2-inch thickness on paper-lined cookie sheets. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Cut meat into serving size pieces. Coat with flour. Brown pieces in small amount of hot fat. Place in roasting pan and cover with mushroom sauce mixed with 1 1/4 cups water. Bake, covered, at 300° for 1 1/2 hours. Serves 4.
Mushroom Sauce 3 tablespoons margarine 1/4 cup mushrooms, chopped 1 tablespoon minced onion 3 tablespoons flour 1/4 teaspoon salt Dash of pepper 1 cup milk Melt margarine. Add mushrooms and onion and sauté until tender. Add flour, salt and pepper and stir until bubbly. Gradually add milk, stirring constantly. Cook and stir until thickened.
Meat Loaf 1 egg 3/4 cup quick oats or bread crumbs 1 cup tomato juice 1/2 onion, minced 1 tablespoon say sauce 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 1/2 pounds ground beef Beat egg; add remaining ingredients and mix well. Form into a loaf and bake at 350° for 1 hour.
Green Beans and Potato Casserole 1 1/2 cups cooked green beans 1 cup potatoes, cooked and diced 1/2 cup celery, diced 4 slices bacon 1 small onion chopped 1 1/2 tablespoons flour 1 cup evaporated milk 1 cup cheese, shredded 1/3 cup cracker crumbs Combine beans, potatoes and celery. Place in greased 1-quart casserole. Fry bacon until crisp. Drain, saving 1
tablespoon drippings. Crumble bacon and set aside. Sauté onion in drippings. Add flour and stir to a smooth paste. Slowly add milk. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened. Add cheese. Stir until melted. Pour vegetables in casserole and stir well. Sprinkle with cracker crumbs. Add crumbled bacon on top. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Serves 6.
1/2 hour. For sauce: combine 3/4 cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon mustard, 1/2 teaspoon paprika and 1/4 cup vinegar; mix well. Can add 4 ounces crushed pineapple to sauce. Can also add 1 pound grated Swiss cheese to meat mixture. Serves 4 to 6.

Place 6 pork chops in bottom of shallow baking dish. Sprinkle with salt. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes. Cover each chop with bread filling and place 2 to 3 tablespoons applesauce on top of filling. Return to oven and bake 1 hour longer. Serves 6.

1 7-ounce can tuna fish 1 small onion, minced 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup diced or grated cheese 1 cup chopped celery 6 hamburger rolls Combine all ingredients for filing. Salt and pepper to taste. Butter inside of rolls. Fill roll and wrap in foil. Bake at 350° for 20 minutes.

Add onion, flour and seasoning and stir until smooth. Gradually add milk. Stir over medium heat until thickened. Arrange half of carrots in bottom of 2 1/2-quart casserole. Add cheese slices. The Z Tour
MCNABB — The Putnam County All Skills Softball Camp will be July 20-22 at Putnam County Junior High School in McNabb. The camp will be under the direction Lady Pumas and Panthers head coach Chris Walker and assistant coaches Lynette Olson, Angie Augspols and Venessa Voss. Session 1 is for girls entering Grades 4-6 from 9:30 to 11 a.m., with an extra pitching session for those interested from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Session 2 is for girls entering Grades 7-9 from noon to 1:30 p.m., with a pitching session at 1:30 to 2 p.m. The camp will include individual instruction on hitting, position defense, pitching, catching and base running. A separate 30-minute session for pitching will be provided, if interested, on each day of the camp. There will be hitting, bunting, throwing and speed contests in each division. Ribbons and other awards will be given for excellence in each event and a cookout on the last day will be offered to the campers. The cost of the camp is $40, and it is open to players from all surrounding communities and schools. Each participant will receive a camp T-shirt if the registration form and fee are received by July 1. If registration forms and fees are received after that date, no T-shirt will be provided for the athlete but walk-ins or late arrivals are welcome. Checks should be made payable to Chris Walker. PRINCETON — On Saturday, July 18, the Zearing Child Enrichment Center will again be sponsoring the Z Tour Bike Ride, a bicycle road ride originating in Princeton and including many surrounding communities. The event will begin at Zearing Park and will include the registrant’s choice of a 10-mile (group ride at 10 a.m.), 30-mile, 50-mile, 62-mile (metric century) and 100-mile (century) ride on specified routes throughout Bureau County. The Z Tour Bike Ride will feature themed refreshment stops, mobile emergency first aid, water, air and bike transportation. At the conclusion of the ride, each rider will be provided lunch at Zearing Park. A limited quantity of dri-fit T-shirts, cycling socks, and newly designed Z Tour Bike Ride jersey can be ordered in advance or purchased the day of the event. PRINCETON — The Princeton High School tennis program will host the Tiger Tennis Classic held Saturday, July 25 for doubles and Saturday, Aug. 1 for singles. There will be junior and adult divisions.
